Models, Methods, Concepts & Applications of the Analytic Hierarchy Process (International Series in Operations Research and Management Science, Volume ... in Operations Research & Management Science)
Thomas L. Saaty , and Luis G. Vargas Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: Accessories:
ASIN: 0792372670 |
Book Description
Models, Methods, Concepts and Applications of the Analytic Hierarchy Process is a volume dedicated to selected applications of the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) focused on three themes: economics, the social sciences, and the linking of measurement with human values. (1) The AHP offers economists a substantially different approach to dealing with economic problems through ratio scales. The main mathematical models on which economics has based its quantitative thinking up to now are utility theory, which uses interval scales, and linear programming. We hope that the variety of examples included here can perhaps stimulate researchers in economics to try applying this new approach. (2) The second theme is concerned with the social sciences. The AHP offers psychologists and political scientists the methodology to quantify and derive measurements for intangibles. We hope that the examples included in this book will encourage them to examine the methods of AHP in terms of the problems they seek to solve. (3) The third theme is concerned with providing people in the physical and engineering sciences with a quantitative method to link hard measurement to human values. In such a process one needs to interpret what the measurements mean. A number is useless until someone understands what it means. It can have different meanings in different problems. Ten dollars are plenty to satisfy one's hunger but are useless by themselves in buying a new car. Such measurements are only indicators of the state of a system, but do not relate to the values of the human observers of that system. AHP methods can help resolve the conflicts between hard measurement data and human values.

Advice, tips and inspiration........2003-11-27
Though the book was not perfect, see my `problem' paragraph below, it did provide me with some good ideas to make the meals more ambrosian. I found Dorcas S. Miller's advice, especially her 17 "Hot Topics" (40 pages), to be informative and practical (choosing the right stove, carrying your kitchen in a pack, etc.)
She has great tips and many charts (charts-cooking time, salads, more) as well as great appendices. Most of her recipes are easy, appealing and clearly explained.
However some sections are better than others, and her breakfast selections, well, was as appealing as `tofu pancakes'.
My greatest problem with the book is that is designed for those in the US and I am backpacking in Peru, a developing (third world) country. Millers' recipes use `mucho' instant and dried ingredients. Here in the USA it is not such a problem to purchase them, but where I am going the markets do not carry instant or dried ingredients. That means I had to buy everything here and lug it to Peru. My bags were already full, and at their weight limit. Thus, many of the recipes were not practical. I point this out for those of you that will be heading to remote and faraway worlds.
That said, the book was still informative, helpful and I recommend it for any backpacker or camper who wants good food under the stars.

Trading the Plan: Build Wealth, Manage Money, and Control Risk (Wiley Finance)
Robert Deel Manufacturer: Wiley ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 047116979X |
Book Description
This is the first book of its kind to address the topic of money management for individual traders and to present a comprehensive, detailed plan for implementation. It explains how to create a management program that addresses the emotional aspects of trading, presents an offensive and defensive portfolio allocation strategy, defines risk and shows the reader how to identify risk tolerance. It offers hands-on advice on selecting screen trades using fundamental and technical analysis and shows how to work with an "anatomy of trade."Customer Reviews:
You Not Only Trade the Plan, you Learn to Plan.......2004-03-04
He teaches technical analysis and he doesn't stay clear of fundamental analysis although he stresses the technical side of things.
It is his view that all the information is in the price. It is.
But he goes on to teach that in spite of the price being the ONLY thing that matters in knowing where to place your investment money, he also explains that every stock does exactly what it's supposed to do... just not exactly WHEN it's supposed to do it. Therefore, your plan has GOT to make room for contingencies. I appreciate how he stresses stop losses. I know of many (poor) investors who heard the lie, "Don't place stops or the specialists will take you out!"
If you're brand new to the market, I'd get a VERY intro book on investing first, and then I'd read/devour this text. It's not an advanced book but if you've never bought or sold a stock, it will confuse you. You don't need much experience though to make this work for you.
Disappointed.......2002-11-12
While the book definitely imparts important information every trader or investor should know, the advice is very simplistic. For example, chapter one explains that we should "buy low and sell high" or that we must be emotionally prepared for losses and gains. One rule he gives could be dangerous if incorrectly applied, and this involves selling too early. The author says that selling too early does not cause you a loss, after all. However, this could be hazardous to a trend following system which depends on a few large gainers. If those few large gainers are sold early, they will never develop into large gainers and offset the many losses. In short, and as other trading experts have noted, one CAN broke taking profits early because this may avoid the big gainers - unless your system is one which is more dependent on the frequency of winners than the size of those winners (e.g. a day trading system).
The text is very introductory and should be for the introductory trader.
Basic, but effective.......2001-12-08
Well, i've read books on money management that go too far on systems and techniques that aren't that easy to grasp or implement. This book by Mr. Deel goes a long way on showing you ways to complement your trading system with just a few rules that will keep you alive for many losing trades in a row, if such a tragic situation ever occur. So, don't waste too much time on making a buying decision. This book is for you. If you're into mathematics, this one will leave you wanting. If you just want a simple and effective way to complement a trading system so that you'll be right there for that next trade with enough tradind capital, than this is it.
If you trade futures only, look elsewhere...
Fantastic, Well Written, In-depth Information.......2000-03-30
I have been trading for 15 years and very few books are as on the mark as this one. The author takes very complex information and explains it in a concise and crystal clear explanation.
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to trade or invest. WOW!
OK as an introduction, not useful for the experienced trader.......1999-12-27

Not Honest or Objective.......2002-06-07
Second weakness: the author gives far too little analysis on the issue of taxes. This subject should have a dedicated chapter. Suppose your retirement income is from mostly untaxed foreign sources and comes to $70K a year. Now if additional taxes in the country come to 30% you will pay $21,000 before you buy one single thing. If a comparable country had a 10% tax rate you could still pay $14,000 more for rent, travel, transport etc. before breaking even.
Third weakness: lack of honesty. Crime has increased in Costa Rica. The author's attempt to gloss over this was so transparent he would have been more credible if he had purposely omitted the topic. The dead give away is the authors comment "like many other countries Costa Rica has crime." He then works to minimize the issue. No statistics are given - and particularly year to year so you can see trends.
You are much better off looking up articles on the country. Just a preview: a lot of things rot or have mechanical difficulties in the humidity. Some people's idea of paradise (particularly the Germans') is spending 365 days a year smoking and drinking, and waking up with a hangover half naked on the beach in the morning.
Pura Vida!.......2002-03-16
This guide paints a far too rosey picture of the country.......1999-10-31
A good book but not the best on the subject.......1999-02-26
In general the book is very well written organized but lacks a lot of details about living in the country i.e. insider information.
Good book but the best on the subject........1999-02-09

Speech, Media and Ethics: The Limits of Free Expression: Critical Studies on Freedom of Expression, Freedom of the Press and the Public's Right to Know
Raphael Cohen-Almagor Manufacturer: Palgrave Macmillan ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0312236077 |
Book Description
Speech, Media, and Ethics: The Limits of Free Expression is an interdisciplinary work that employs ethics, liberal philosophy, and legal and media studies to outline boundaries to freedom of expression and freedom of the press conducive to protecting basic human and civic rights. Moral principles are applied to analyze practical questions that deal with free expression and its limits.Customer Reviews:
A laymans perspective.......2001-07-20
Cohen-Almagor's analysis of the paradoxes and dilemmas surrounding freedom of speech in a democratic system first came to my attention in his The Boundaries of Tolerance: The Struggle Against Kahanism in Israel. To this layman, interested in gaining a better grasp of democracy, it was an eye-opener in its portrayal of the subtle constraints on the rights held to be sacrosanct. The present volume takes the theme further - focusing on the intrinsic tensions between the allowing the media as much freedom as possible, and the need for self-defence mechanisms to protect democracy. Its discussion of the Harm Principle (constraints which apply to threats of immediate violence) and the Offence Principle (which places psychological offence on a par, morally, with physical harm) leads to a provocative examination of the limits that may be imposed on free expression. A case in point: the Skokie affair, in which the Illinois Supreme Court decision is argued to be flawed.
Another central issue is the potential conflict between (what is perceived as) good journalism, on the one hand, and objective reporting, on the other - a particularly thought-provoking theme; thus, for example, the author advances the view that morally neutral coverage of hate rhetoric, racism, genocide and terrorism may be both false and untenable. The moral implications extend to other contexts as well; e.g. in arguing for extreme caution in media coverage of suicide, in general, and in the coverage of teen suicides and celebrity suicides (most likely to be imitated), in particular.
All in all, ethical constraints on the right to know are a recurrent theme in this volume, and one that cannot fail to engage the reader interested in ongoing ethical controversies related to the media. (Suffice it to mention the debate - pursued ad nauseam - surrounding coverage of Princess Diana, both in life and in death). While the code of ethics which obtains for the media may be fairly clear in theory, enforcement is no simple matter, nor are the press councils as powerful as one may think, especially when they are in fact run by the media themselves. Cohen-Almagor's recommendations - some of them very concrete ones - for better and more ethical media are as vital as they are (hopefully) practicable.
The Appendix - describing a telephone poll (in Israel) designed to evaluate public perceptions of media coverage - is revealing: one very troubling statistic was the relatively high proportion of those who supported imposing restrictions on freedom of speech and press. The potential threat of such a mindset to the workings of democracy should not be overlooked.
Clearly, ethical considerations must be an ever-present concern of the media - the publishers, concessionaires, editors and reporters - though, as the author reiterates, regulation and constraints should, wherever possible, be self-imposed, rather than the products of legislation. Speech, Media and Ethics is an immensely readable analysis of these consideration. It should be on the Recommended Reading lists of students (law, journalism, philosophy etc.), journalists - and of anyone interested in the subtle workings of the democratic system.
simply a must for media scholars and professionals.......2001-03-20
In 1994, in The Boundaries of Liberty and Tolerance, Raphael Cohen-Almagor published a pioneering study of the challenge to liberal principles of toleration posed by extremist political parties in Israel. In Speech, Media, and Ethics: The Limits of Free Expression, the examination of the limits of tolerance is+AH4-+AH4- extended to embrace the problem of maintaining a free press in the face of challenges from forces that if left unrestrained would destroy the institutions of a free society. This is the classic dilemma of liberal toleration. To the extent that liberal theory can distinguish between what John Stuart Mill - the Founding Father of free speech theory - called discussion and expressive activities that go beyond discussion the classic question whether we should tolerate the intolerant has a simple+AH4-+AH4- answer. The toleration of discussion or advocacy extends to the advocacy of violent or extremist policies since ex hypothesi it extends to the advocacy or discussion (if that is what it is) of anything. But the application of that principle and the analysis of what it is that carries communicative activities beyond advocacy are complex. It is also best explored, as here, in relation to concrete instances and experiences.
Of all the dilemmas in the operation of free governments, the dilemma+AH4-+AH4- of free discussion and the delimitation of press freedom are the most intractable. In these essays Raphael Cohen-Almagor tackles the dilemma at the points where its complexities are most apparent. Political theorists, politicians, and philosophical journalists (if such there be) will have good reason to ponder what he has to say.+AH4-
