            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful primer on starting a business with contact information for locating startup funds if necessary........2006-09-06

This is a valuable book (resource) for budding entrepreneurs. It seems to try to cover all the bases for starting a small business, but it can't do them all well in the space available between its covers. The book is only 288 pages long. If you are in the planning stages of starting a small business, then I highly recommend you get a copy of this book. Read it, study it, and outline it. There are helpful checklists to help you grasp the subjects. You will come up with a plethora of keywords and terms that you will want to google to find Web pages giving more detailed (and maybe more current) information.

I am a SCORE counselor (Senior Corps of Retired Executives) who typically does face-to-face counseling sessions three nights a month. It would really be neat if my clients would read this book BEFORE they came to their session with me because they would pretty much be "educated customers" ready to ask educated questions. Our sessions would be so much more beneficial.

            My favorite chapters were:

            1. Initial business concerns
            2. Your business' structure
            3. Business start-up details
            5. Sources of business assistance (SCORE is mentioned here)
            7. Your smart business plan (and a good sample plan is included)
            8. Obtaining the financing you need

The book is weak when it comes to how the Internet can be used in corresponding, hiring, and marketing. But this is just one example of how googling keywords and concepts found in the book will make the book more complete. Don't treat the book as authoritative on the law. It isn't. Nor was it ever intended to be. It is light on tax information as it relates to small business.

I was particularly impressed with the material presented in Chapter 2: Choice of Legal Entity. That subject is sorely ignored in most small business books, and it is critically important. It is a subject I regularly must spend a great deal of time discussing at my SCORE sessions. This book does a pretty good job on the topic.

Chapters 4 and 9 through 12 are easy to find fault with. The topic of each could fill a book. But having these topics covered definitely will help a budding entrepreneur know some of the issues they raise.

I would have liked the book more if Chapter 6 (marketing) had been less superficial. When I read it I got the impression that the author was more a public relations expert than a marketing expert. I generally categorize public relations as a subset of marketing. Marketing includes advertising, public relations, and a whole host of other promotion techniques. I did not get this message when I read the book. I also would have liked the book better if the Internet, email, and Web sites had been discussed more. But there are many books on those subjects. Therefore, I can't complain too much about the limited discussion of computers.

When you read this book it may feel a little like it was produced on an assembly line. Maybe it was? There are 50 versions of this book sold; the only state I haven't found a copy for is Montana. Content is king, and this book has it. 5 stars!

WE have used recipes from every chapter both on the grill and in the oven and they are all wonderful! 5 out of 5 stars An introduction to a Pacific Northwest Tradition.......2006-02-28

I grew up in the Pacific Northwest, and have always enjoyed the flavor of salmon cooked over alder. After some friends treated us to alder "planked" salmon on a camping trip, we searched Amazon and discovered this book. We've tried a number of the basic recipes with great success. Perhaps more significantly, those recipes have encouraged me to experiment with a variety of woods for some of my more "traditional" recipes, every time with great success. (For example, spareribs, a Texas-style dry rub, and either an alder or hickory plank make a fantastic taste combination.) The recipes include a wide range of spice and flavor combinations, from simple to what I would call "nouveau cuisine," which should meet most people's taste preferences. And the range of possible combinations, based on wood types, additional spices, or flavors in the soaking process, leaves room for almost limitless experimentation.

We have enjoyed the book so much that we've given it as gifts to several friends. Their responses have also been enthusiastic.

In response to Cook Kazoo, we were surprised with the harsh review. Several thousand of our books have been sold and this response was the first negative one we or our publisher have received. The recipes in Plank Cooking were all kitchen tested multiple times. We had at least 5 taste-testers per recipe and many of the recipes were cooked by other people prior to being published. There are however, things that can go wrong in plank cooking if instructions are not followed. To insure plank cooking success only use non-treated, non-resinous woods such as alder, cedar, oak, maple, hickory, apple or cherry. There are many great cooking planks on the market today. Planks need to be soaked prior to cooking to not only prolong their life but to impart moisture into the food. Planks on the grill need to be closely monitored to prevent excessive flare ups and to control the amount of smoke desired. Finally, good quality ingredients must be used to produce a high quality meal. If you haven't tried cooking on a plank, give it a try, the possibilities are endless!

2 out of 5 stars Plank Cooking disappointing.......2006-02-12

I purchased this book as a Christmas gift for my husband since plank cooking is a cooking style that we enjoy. We have been disappointed with this book. Each of the recipes that we tried was inedible and some have inconsistencies and inacuuracies in the recipes. I originally decided to purchase the book because I liked the photography and the layout and I can only hope that similar attention to detail will be added to the recipes themselves. We have now relegated this book to a new role as a fire starter.

4 out of 5 stars Diffrent Angle On Commodities.......2007-01-21

this book is not for the beginner trader,
it requires a lot of reading and the language is sometimes hard.
nerveless, there is another perspective on commodities that
can contribute a lot to the reader.
the book teaches who are the main players in the commodities market
and how to select the right side.
The focus is on 3 diminsions: price, volume and open-interest.
there are no formulas in book [it gives rules] and you need experience and much
reading to build a system from it.
i would recommend this if you want to expand your knowledge
                    about the commodities market.

This is one of the best books I have read integrating price with volume and OI and trade mix .
It drives home most eloquently the necessity to consider all of the above in analysis and highlights the value of COT reports .
To sum up , one cannot be the same again after having read this book .

                        Book Description

Pure Speculation explains, compares and contrasts the risk-taking mindset of the gambler with that of the speculator. In the digital age, as the tables, tracks and arenas that form the bedrock of the world of gambling increasingly collide with the floors and computer screens of the financial traders around the globe, Pure Speculation asks whether investors in the markets really are any different from those that wager on the horses in the Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe? 300 years ago the desire to succeed in gambling spawned the techniques of modern investment. Today the two businesses are inter-linked in numerous ways. Pure Speculation asks how far, and with what repercussions, has this morphing been mirrored in the psychology of the participants?

"The ethical dilemmas they describe in the very realistic, sometimes grim, and probably true case studies show that such experiences can range from basic interpersonal conflicts to such major problems as sexual harassment or discovering faked research results on the part of a colleague. . . . This slim, readable, but useful volume describes the contentious, often disastrous environments that result from such situations and gives the reader much to think about." --Journal of Academic Librarianship Some academics do unethical things: lie on their vitae, fudge research grants, sexually harass students. Others have to grapple with unanswerable ethical questions: Who gets authorship credit for a paper? How much outside consulting is too much? What constitutes a conflict of interest in reviewing papers? This concise, practical guide provides concrete strategies for dealing with wrongdoing without damaging your own career or relationships. It also helps guide you through the fuzzy areas of academic ethics to avoid being accused of wrongdoing yourself. The useful strategies outlined in this volume will enable you to do the right thing, without negative consequences.

Abraham Lincoln's forefathers were pioneers - men who left their homes to open up the wilderness and make the way plain for others to follow them. For one hundred and seventy years, ever since the first American Lincoln came from England to Massachusetts in 1638, they had been moving slowly westward as new settlements were made in the forest. They faced solitude, privation, and all the dangers and hardships that beset men who take up their homes where only beasts and wild men have had homes before; but they continued to press steadily forward, though they lost fortune and sometimes even life itself, in their westward progress. Back in Pennsylvania and New Jersey some of the Lincolns had been men of wealth and influence. In Kentucky, where the future President was born on February 12, 1809, his parents lived in deep poverty.

In this groundbreaking study based on almost 600 documents in Lincoln's own hand, the authors tell each story, each life-or-death decision, and the factors that tipped the balance one way or the other. In the midst of America's deadliest war, hundreds of men's lives hung on the decisions of President Lincoln. Lincoln balanced sternness and compassion while deciding the fate of men sentenced to be hanged or shot for crimes including desertion, spying, sabotage, murder, and rape.

Thomas Lowry, M.D. has written several books, including The Stories the Soldiers Wouldn't Tell: Sex in the Civil War, Tarnished Eagles, and Attack on Taranto, Blueprint for Pearl Harbor.

2 out of 5 stars The best side of Lincoln.......2004-01-12

If you're looking for the best of Lincoln, and avoiding unbiased books, this one is for you. This book paints Lincoln as the most caring person imaginable.

Of course the title is "Don't shoot that boy"; which only focus on 'good' things Lincoln did.

If you're doing research on Lincoln's good qualities, this book is a good source. But it you want unbaised book, look elsewhere.

It's a fast reading book, that lives up to the 'myth' of Lincoln.

4 out of 5 stars A Look at the Lincoln Legend.......2000-05-21

The research into this book is incredible. The stories of the court martials is enjoyable reading, though at times the stories become repetitive (thus the 4 stars and not 5). Lincoln the compassionate president is examined carefully through these court martial cases and in the final chapter. The final chapter, is a great look at Lincoln and his place in history.

She is 10 and the author mentioned in this book how she wrote easy reading for children who needed that type of reading. She targeted the audience perfectly in our situation. I found the book as refreshing as our daughter did. I have purchased the book on Amanzon.Com because it was the first available of a book that is not in circulation. The book and author has touched our lives in ways you will only know if you are in the world of dyslexia.

Abraham Lincoln's forefathers were pioneers—men who left their homes to open up the wilderness and make the way plain for others to follow them. For one hundred and seventy years ever since the first American Lincoln came from England to Massachusetts in 1638 they had been moving slowly westward as new settlements were made in the forest.
