Excellent guide for salesmen and consultants.......2001-12-31
I have read many books by Stephan Schiffman. This book should be required reading for anyone in sales, or for those who are considering a consulting practice. In typical Schiffman style, unlike many business books, everything is covered in a quick, clear, and concise method. From prospecting, to billing, to marketing, and closing sales, this book is extremely useful. Schiffman's no nonsense "stop telling and start asking" philosphy is present in this selection. This book has helped my activity and sales production soar. I recommend this book as well as other selections by Stephen Schiffman; you will not be disappointed.

Book Description
"A major contribution to the field..." ." Gordon B. Davis, Honeywell Professor of Management Information Systems, Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota, USA
" "This book is required reading for anyone who wants to understand how and why computers influence organization structure. It established a conceptual foundation for the field, and examines the particular characteristics of the tools computer systems provide and what organizational impacts they can be expected to have. The conclusions are sometimes counter-intuitive, but always convincingly argued." Lee L. Gremillion, Partner, PricewaterhouseCoopers, USA
"This is a superb source for people seeking to learn about organizational structure. Groth gives remarkable reasoning and interesting examples throughout the book. An exciting contribution" Kamar Singh, Project Manager, GE Aircraft Engines, Ohio, USA
Lars Groth addresses a subject of key importance and takes a fresh and innovative look at the ways to build and develop organizations with the assistance of information technology. Five major examples are used to point out the road ahead for those aiming to improve existing organizations with the help of new technology, as well as explaining some significant properties inherent in organizations and information technology. For the first time, the interplay between organization structure and information technology is thoroughly analysed in the context of established organization theory.
Through examination of existing models and taking into account the new possibilities offered by IT, this book will enable practising managers and consultants to look at their organizations and decide where the greatest, and least, opportunities lie. The book will also be highly relevant to MBA, MIS and Executive courses concerned with the relationship between organizations and IT.
Customer Reviews:
A must-read for anyone interested in IT and organizations.......2001-01-12
What do computers and information technology do for organizations? How have they changed, and, more importantly, how might they change the way we structure, manage, and operate organizations? If these questions interest you, then this is the book for you.
First, the author guides you through a thorough examination of how human characteristics (limited memory, processing constraints, emotions) condition organizational structure. Next, he explores how technologies of all sorts (e.g., writing, printing, telecommunications) affect organizations by relieving these limitations. Finally, only after establishing this very important context, does he turn to what exactly information technology means to organizations. Computers, he concludes, affect organizations primarily through two characteristics -- their enormous and enormously accessible memories, and their unparalleled communicating and coordinating potential.
Having established these foundations, his conclusions -- what sort of organizational structures IT facilitates -- follow logically and smoothly. Whether or not you agree with these conclusions, taking the journey with the author to arrive at them is both entertaining and educational. This book is authoritative, well-written, and hugely educational.
Beyond the Internet hype.......2000-04-03
After a thorough analysis of man's organization and technology, Groths sets out to investigate the new forms of organization that IT faciliates. His innovations includes 'The Joystick Organization', the Meta-Organization' and ' The Organized Cloud'.
Groth is no IT nerd, nor a Luddite. He is surprisingly sober on the digital economy, and often funny. There are not too many people on this planet who integrates Sokrates' dialogues, Mintzberg's organization theory and the technical intricacies of computer systems into one single framework. There may be good reasons not to, but when Groth does this, you feel it is natural and coherent.

Customer Reviews:
Good book for extract brewers.......2006-02-13
This is a good resource for beginning/intermediate extract brewers but it has no information on all-grain brewing.
This was my first brewing book..........2006-02-02
And it continues to be useful. Korzonas writes in a very appoachable manner with excellent layout of techniques and ingredients. I hoped for volume II, but appearently it isn't to be. If you're just starting out this would be an excellent book to add to that "basic brewing equipment" kit you're purchasing! It will take you through from "What is this for?" to "Hey, let's brew this!". Excellent book. Full marks.
Excellent........2003-11-15
I love to teach myself. I started out with Charlie Papazian's book. That book was very helpful and pointed out a few things I might not have instantly associated. After my first 5-gallon batch I had more questions about the process as I was looking for finer details on the different stages. The Papazian book is definitely an excellent resource.
When I got the Korzonas book I thought "Here I go just doubling up and not expanding." How wrong I was. It expands on the basics to an intermediate level. There is definitely a wealth of information in this book.
I can't wait to see what Volume II will be like.
I will say these last things and let you on your way.
Armed with only 4 things you will always brew excellent beer.
1) The Complete Joy of Homebrewing (Charlie Papazian)
2) Homebrewing Volume I (Al Korzonas)
3) Informative local Homebrew shop or Homebrew Club.
4) Love of good beer!!
Remember C. Papazian's beautiful mantra "Relax don't worry, have a homebrew."
homebrewing vol 1.......2000-05-02
I have read a lot of books and other things relating to brewing but this is one if not the best I have read.To call this a bible is not an understatement!.Well worth the read.If your a beginner please read this very good book!
A virtual encyclopedia, all in one book!.......2000-04-23
If I could only buy one book for homebrewing, this would be it. I have most of the "basic" books, and have studied for & passed (with an 80) the BJCP exam, so I've read a bunch of homebrewing books. Al's book is the most complete I've seen. The details on hops & yeast types are exhaustive. Although this one is titled Volume 1, I don't see why any more volumes are needed for the typical brewer. Al has an enormous amount of information in these pages, but his style includes jokes and thus it is quite easy to read. You will not regret having bought this book.

Book Description
In the spring of 1871, Ulysses S. Grant wrote to an old friend that as president he was "the most persecuted individual on the Western Continent." Grant had not sought the office, and halfway through his first term he chafed under its many burdens.
Grant’s cherished project to annex Santo Domingo, begun early in his administration, entered a crucial period. Grant agreed to a tactical compromise: Rather than vote the controversial treaty down, Congress sent a commission to investigate the island. Grant’s message submitting the report, hammered out over labored drafts, bore a defensive tone and asked Congress to postpone any decision.
Closer to home, Grant sought legislation to facilitate federal intervention in the persecution of blacks by white extremists across the South. After much acrimony and stinging accusations of executive tyranny, Congress passed an Enforcement Act, hailed by Grant as "a law of extraordinary public importance."
The greatest accomplishment of Grant’s first term came in foreign relations. After secret negotiations, the United States and Great Britain met in a Joint High Commission to settle long-standing grievances, from boundary and fishing questions to British complicity in the depredations of the Alabama and other Confederate raiders. The resulting Treaty of Washington established an international tribunal in Geneva, Switzerland.
At home, economic prosperity and consequent debt reduction meant that Grant could see "no reason why in a few short years the national taxgatherer may not disappear from the door of the citizen almost entirely." His Indian policy, influenced by Eastern Quakers and often ridiculed for its benevolence, augured well. Despite continued clashes between Indians and settlers, Grant maintained that compassion rather than force would answer the Indian problem.
Customer Reviews:
The Real U.S. Grant.......2005-05-25
The twenty-six (and counting!) volumes comprising all the known extant writings of Ulysses Grant are indeed a remarkable example of published primary source material. While every volume contains much material that is admittedly of trivial importance to even the most rabid Grant scholar, each book in this series also contains fascinating nuggets of information not found anywhere else. Anyone with even a casual interest in USG is sure to discover something worth reading in every volume. In gathering together not only all of Grant's known correspondence, but relevant peripheral documents, the editors of this series are doing a truly Herculean job and deserve great commendation.
I have only a few quibbles with the series. The first involves something over which the editors had no control. I refer to the fact that, in the first few volumes (particularly Volume One,) Grant's descendants insisted that certain passages in Grant's letters to his fiancee-turned-wife Julia Dent that had been crossed out (either by Julia or other family members) not be published. This idiotic decision is not only extremely frustrating for the reader, but, ironically, damaging to Grant himself. By all accounts, the deleted passages contain nothing that could be considered detrimental to Grant's good name, but by leaving them out, these descendants unwittingly gave the impression that there was something to hide. Hopefully, in an "Appendix" volume at the end of the series, the editors will be sporting enough to include whatever deleted passages can be transcribed, and the series will at last be considered complete.
My other complaints about this series are more minor. While each volume contains copious, and frequently illuminating, footnotes, the editors occasionally fail to provide enough context. That is to say, a brief, undetailed letter of Grant's will frequently be followed by several pages of footnotes providing other letters and documents on the same subject, without giving much information explaining what, exactly, it all meant. The reader who is not already fully informed on the subject being addressed is sometimes left feeling confused about what exactly is being discussed, and what its relevance may have been.
Another drawback is, simply, the price. While these books are certainly handsomely--and obviously expensively--printed and bound, those of us who study history as a hobby rather than as a profession could wish for editions that were more cheaply done, and thus more affordable. Unless you are fortunate enough to have access to a good academic library, these extremely expensive (even when you buy second-hand) volumes are simply out-of-reach for many people. That's a great pity, because in these books is an "insider's view" of Grant that does not fully come across in any regular biography.
Need to go to CD-ROM.......2000-09-22
Big, fat, slow volumes--very costly. Scholars would prefer CD-ROMs. Thanks for listening.
A masterful achievement.......2000-07-03
"The Papers of Ulysses S. Grant" is a project begun in 1962 for the purpose of publishing all the known letters written by Ulysses S. Grant. Volume one was published in 1967 and there are now twenty-four volumes in the series. People who follow Grant's career are aware of the inestimable value of this project. The Papers contain all known correspondence written by Grant and letters received by him. The editing of the series is unparalleled and the volumes represent primary source material at its apex.
Those who believe Grant was a "drunkard" or a "butcher" should read his own words, which show Grant's humor, pathos and unique personality. Masterfully edited by John Y. Simon, these volumes are a "must have" for anyone with an interest in U.S. Grant as a general, a politician and as a man

Book Description
This important book, with the intent of helping others, is an anecdotal overview portraying the life of a person afflicted with Asperger's Syndrome, a high functioning and mild form of autism. The author, who had autistic traits as a child, has successfully overcome numerous obstacles to lead a reasonably normal life. He holds a degree in Electrical Engineering, and he has occupied himself with construction projects, carpentry and painting. He is now an author and has written several books, among them three science fiction novels, and a novel about an American in Mexico. He travels extensively and enjoys bicycling and hiking.
Various experiences of his life are presented from childhood to the present, and most of them bear certain qualities and characteristics of Asperger's Syndrome. Other important topics and difficulties related to autism are discussed, such as: childhood idiosyncrasies, obsessions and worries, dwelling on subjects, strong convictions, expecting friendships to continue, collecting things, plus other subjects and ideas. There are several anecdotes that point out some bizarre incidents in his life, along with stories that reveal some of the unique and important projects he has accomplished.
Also discussed are possible causes of autism, whether they be from genetic inheritance, out of balance brain chemistries, or even from heavy metals. Some unique and original solutions including insights are also covered. Overcoming Asperger's is all a process as we explore new ideas and concepts.
Customer Reviews:
Maybe the most honest book you are ever likely to read!.......2007-04-08
Every now and then you may be lucky enough to come across a work such as this. It's a very honest, sometimes painfully honest account of one man's struggle to live in a world that is almost too alien to bear. The insights in the journey of overcoming Asperger's Syndrome, sometimes sublime into the spirtual - to the very ordinary, are an inspiration. This is a must read! Whether your interest is professional or just understanding the human condition. You really do feel that you are walking with him, every step of the way.
Climb Every Mountain.......2005-04-23
This book is a rare gem and a recently discovered treasure. In addition to being well written, one can identify with much of what the author has chosen to share. It provides a much needed window with parted curtains into autism/Asperger's (a/A) perceptions and interpretations.
It has been said and evidence appears to support the finding that people on the a/A spectrum learn empathy cognitively as opposed to intuitively. Seeing the view from another person's perspective is challenging for most people, but for those on the a/A spectrum it is all the more so.
This book is one that commands respect; being able to disclose the level of information that is found in this book is nothing short of courageous. It is the voice of hope for those with any form of autism; for professionals and for those personally involved with people on the a/A spectrum. This is a book for everybody! Being able to share these insights and observations made me think of the song "Climb Every Mountain" from "The Sound of Music."
Hats off to this book!
This book has remarkable insight !.......2003-03-26
From a literary point of view, this is by far your best book yet. But from a subject matter point of view, it is just outstanding. It is written well enough that, as I read each of the episodes you relate, I agonized with you as you strove to deal with each. The book is a remarkable insight into the thoughts and personality, even the mind, of someone who looks at the world through a different set of lenses than most of us do.
Cumulatively, the episodes and their outcomes gradually made me realize that something was missing in how you regarded the personnel in each event and how you assessed "blame" for the contretemps that often resulted. It eventually dawned on me that there was very little, if any, empathy for the views and feelings of others in the way you approached these situations. It seemed difficult for you to understand how the other guy or gal might feel about a particular situation. When I mentioned this to other professionals, they told me that the lack of empathy is a major symptom of Asperger's.
However, the overriding feeling I experienced while reading your book was admiration. Time after time, I said to myself, "Man, that took a lot of guts to write that!" Although perhaps therapeutic, writing the book also must have been quite painful. But beyond whatever therapeutic value writing it had for you, think of how invaluable the insight you provide into what it is like to live with Asperger's and ultimately overcome it will be to others with the condition, to family and care-givers, and to medical and psychological professionals working to treat those with Asperger's. You have done a great service, undoubtedly at no small cost to yourself, to all who are involved in any way with this condition and they should be grateful.
Congratulations on a job very well done!
