    Book Description

This dissertation argues that Amazonian indigenous peoples organized via transnational networks due to the domestic blockages presented to them in their respective countires. Due to these blockages and the growing number of transnational political opportunity structures, such as national and international non-govermental organizations, multi-lateral development banks, and multinational corporation, indigenous peoples mobilized through transnational advocacy networks and eventually formed transnational social movement organizations. Through a comparative-historical analysis of five Ecuadorian Amazonian indigenous organizations, this work illustrates the processes of transnational collective action and its outcomes.

I was pleasantly surprised by the comprehensiveness of coverage that this book provides. Although I'm not easily impressed, particularly by "all-in-one" professional reference books, I will refer to this volume time and time again in order to refresh my memory about a concept, or learn some about an area of the law to which I have not previously had much exposure. Very usuful book.

John Wooden was named ESPN's Coach of the Century for the way he led his UCLA basketball team to the top of the sporting world in the 1960s and '70s. Andrew Hill was a rebellious and sparingly used reserve on the squad before becoming a successful television executive. While it's doubtful that either would have predicted it at the time, the lessons imparted on the court by Wooden eventually helped Hill reach the top of his profession. And in Be Quick--but Don't Hurry, named for one of the legendary coach's ubiquitous aphorisms, the now-grateful protégé translates that sage advice into 21 "secrets" that may help others realize similar accomplishments. Like the title, the counsel can usually be boiled down into short expressions that are deceptively simple. Examples include "Focus on effort, not winning," "Balance is EVERYTHING," "Failing to prepare is preparing to fail," and "The team with the best players almost always wins." To show their relevance and power, Hill fleshes them out with solid examples from the hardwood as well as the business world. And with the track record Wooden has compiled, who are we not to take them seriously? --Howard Rothman

                      Book Description

Perhaps the least controversial sports honor in living memory was the selection of John Wooden as "Coach of the Century" by ESPN, honoring his ten NCAA basketball championships in a twelve-year stretch. His UCLA teams won with great centers and with small lineups, with superstars and with team effort, always with quickness, always with class. Wooden was a teacher first and foremost, and his lessons -- taught on the basketball court, but applicable throughout one's life -- are summarized in his famed Pyramid of Success.

Andrew Hill was one of the lucky young men who got to learn from Wooden in his favored classroom -- though that is hardly how Hill would have described it at the time. An all-city high school player in Los Angeles, Hill played -- a little -- on three national champions, from 1970 to 1972. Hill was left embittered by his experience at UCLA; he was upset at how unequally Wooden treated his starting players and his substitutes.

Hill went on to a successful career in television, rising to the presidency of CBS Productions, where he was responsible for the success of such popular series as Touched by an Angel and Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman. Hill's job required him to manage many creative people, with the egos and insecurities that usually go along with such talents. And one day, some twenty-five years after he graduated, he was hit with the realization that everything he knew about getting the best out of people he had learned directly from Coach John Wooden.

With no small trepidation, Hill picked up the phone to call and thank his old coach and unexpected mentor. To his surprise, Wooden greeted him warmly and enthusiastically. A strong friendship, sealed in frequent visits and conversations, ensued, and endures.

Be Quick -- But Don't Hurry! tells the story of that friendship. But it also shares the lessons and secrets that Hill learned from Coach Wooden, which hold the key to managing creatively in the idea-driven economy of the twenty-first century. Among those lessons are:

Full of sound advice and warm reminiscence, Be Quick -- But Don't Hurry! is the management book of a lifetime.

Andy Hill does an excellent job of applying Coach Wooden's winning philosophies to business and personal life. Makes an excellent gift to first-time managers.

The book arrived in good condition. I was anticipating it to arrive sooner than it did as my daughter needed it for a class but aside from that, the purchase was a great value and served its purpose well for a college class.

5 out of 5 stars What a great little book!.......2005-02-21

I really enjoyed this book by Andy Hill. Not until he realized his own successes and failures did he fully see all that he learned from coach Wooden. The foundational principles taught by coach Wooden are one's that we can all admire. "Make each day your masterpiece." Buy this book, then give it to a friend.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent advice for anyone in a leadership position.......2004-03-31

The book begins with a brief summary of Hill's introduction to Wooden and Hill realization that the only reason he's made it this far is because Wooden's teachings so ingrained in his mind from his time at UCLA and that they are applicable to all aspects of life. He relates Wooden's 21 "secrets" to his business life, and demonstrates how they guided him to the top. It's amazing how perfectly these teachings fit into regular life. John Wooden is truly an enlightened soul.

In fact, I have implemented a few of his lessons into my life already, and it has made quite a difference. In a band I have gotten together, I have gone for talent, in keeping with rule #1 "The team with the best players always wins". I have gotten the best singer, the best metal guitarist and the most unique drummer. It's incredible that Wooden's teachings even apply to a heavy metal band, something at the opposite end of his spectrum. Whenever I am selected to be in a leadership position I skim this book to better prepare myself to succeed. The way these "secrets" apply to every aspect of life where success is an issue is awe inspiring.

From the authors of Becoming a Chef, which won a 1996 James Beard Book Award, comes this clever guide to neighborhood restaurants. Andrew Dornenburg and Karen Page interviewed over 100 top chefs in 28 cities across the country, from Miami and Boston to Seattle and Honolulu, with plenty of stops in between, and asked them where they eat when they aren't cooking for themselves.

Chef's Night Out is the fourth book from Dornenburg and Page, and, like their previous work, it was conceived primarily for people in and interested in the restaurant business, aspiring chefs, and food lovers. The basic premise, explain top chefs like Bob Kinkead (from Washington, D.C.), Rick Bayless (Frontera Grill in Chicago), and Suzanne Goin (Lucques in Los Angeles), is that dining out is one of the best ways to learn about food. But whether you're looking to learn or just looking to eat well, this book is great fun to read, and particularly useful for travelers.

Divided into chapters by city, we are introduced to some local top chefs with their own award-winning restaurants who explain their food philosophies and then offer a short list of their favorite local haunts--everything from fine dining to bakeries, coffee shops, and fast food. Sean Kelly (Aubergine in Denver) loves the Vietnamese curried shrimp and potatoes over rice noodles at New Saigon Restaurant and the "great raw bar" and "happening" bar scene at Jax Fish House. Sanford D'Amato (Sanford in Milwaukee) loves the thin, crispy pizzas from Zaffiro's Pizza and Bar. And Tom Colicchio (Gramercy Tavern in New York City) raves about the constantly changing menu at Etats-Unis, the razor clams in a light white bean broth at the Red Cat, and everything at Daniel and Jean-Georges.

Looking for recommendations in your hometown? Planning a trip and want to know where to go? Here's your chance to find out where the chefs go and why they go there. With help from greats such as Loretta Keller (Bizou in San Francisco), Thierry Rautureau (Rover's in Seattle), and Jimmy Schmidt (The Rattlesnake Club in Detroit), you can't possibly go wrong! --Leora Y. Bloom

With opinions about four-star restaurants as well as favorite neighborhood haunts, 100 of America's top chefs-including Rick Bayless (Frontera Grill, Chicago), Daniel Boulud (Restaurant Daniel, New York), Susan Feniger and Mary Sue Milliken (Border Grill and Ciudad, Los Angeles), and Lydia Shire (Biba and Pignoli, Boston)-share their insights about where to dine and how to maximize the dining experience in more than twenty-five of the top restaurant cities across the country. Renowned photographer Michael Donnelly captures the adventures of these leading chefs.
The book includes a special section entitled "10 Steps to Educating a Palate", which will make anyone a better diner-and even a better cook-and also features sidebars which provide readers with special insights into local and ethnic cuisines, matching foods with the best wines, ordering more creatively and knowledgeably in any type of restaurant, and much more.

5 out of 5 stars Where the best chefs eat and why!.......2003-05-25

Chef's Night Out by Andrew Dornenburg and Karen Page tells you where the best chefs across America like to eat and why. This simple idea packs a lot of information into it. It's not just a list of four-star restaurants. You also find out where they go for burgers and oysters and pizza and steak and in the process you find out what they think makes for a great burger and oyster and pizza and steak. It's an education just to read about why they like these places and the food they serve, even if I never make it to half these places (which are in cities from New York to Los Angeles, but also cities I never go to like Atlanta and Baltimore). There are also a lot of interesting articles on things like what kinds of wine to drink with different ethnic foods, which is worth the price of the book in itself. This book is a must for any professional chef who wants to know how the top 100 chefs think about food (and who they are).

CHEF'S NIGHT OUT authors Andrew Dornenburg and Karen Page are hosts of a new show of the same name that is aired on TaxiVu in the backseats of New York City taxicabs. They interview top chefs about their favorite places to eat in the city, and provide insider tips on what to order when you're there and what else not to miss. This book tells where 100 top chefs across the U.S. like to eat on their nights off -- where Daniel Boulud eats in New York City, where Charlie Trotter eats in Chicago, where Nancy Silverton and Mark Peel eat in Los Angeles. I can't imagine a better book to guide me to great restaurants in San Francisco, Washington, DC, Detroit or New Orleans -- or any of the other dozens of cities covered. Even if I don't make it to all of these places, I still enjoy reading about them and learning more about how top chefs think about food and restaurants. Still, after reading CHEF'S NIGHT OUT, I'm planning a trip to New Orleans so I can check out Uglesich's (a favorite of everyone from Todd English to Anne Rosenzweig to Charlie Trotter)!!

You won't regret it!

And the purpose of this book is....Well, to be honest, I was not quite sure. Then two hours passed, and I was still reading it.

That was my first impression of Chef's Night Out, the latest publication from Andrew Dornenburg and Karen Page, the same team that brought us Becoming a Chef, Culinary Artistry and Dining Out.

Chef's Night Out serves as a mouthpiece for over one hundred chefs, highlighting their favorite restaurants, what they eat, and why they eat there. The index of contributing chefs reads like a Who's Who of American cooking: Charlie Trotter, Daniel Boulud, Todd English, Rick Bayless and Francois Payard, to name but a few. The restaurant recommendations, however, range from upscale destinations like Nobu, Bobby Flay's choice for inventive Japanese cuisine, to downtown recommendations like Pho Bang, Jean-Georges Vongerichten's house of pleasure of simple Vietnamese food.

What makes the book really interesting is reading why the chefs like to eat at a certain restaurant -- understanding what a great chef thinks makes a great restaurant serves up an unusual learning experience. Additionally, there is a multitude of short educational essays throughout the book -- not all of which come from chefs. Stephen Beckta, sommelier of Cafe Boulud, writes an outstanding piece, unveiling his wine philosophies: Serving Wine to Industry Insiders, Wine and Food Pairing Guidelines, Matching Wines and World Cuisines, and Palate of the People, describing how a client's palate is often based on their geographic origins. His three-page article alone makes the book worth picking up.

So, if you are the kind of food lover who has the money to spare and loves to read easily-digestible short stories -- like Norman Van Aken's snippet on Cooking in Miami, Charlie Trotter's tips on creating a memorable dining experience, or just that Mario Batali likes well-done hot dogs from Gray's Papaya, then this is one for you.

The books is a collection of a few articles written by a few famous investors. Of course, there is some wisdom in their words, but overall the selection looks pretty random. The articles are not really logically connected, written about different markets, different times and often are given out of the context. Just like mixing the best ingridients is not nessesary makes a good meal, this books is not adding much value by combining the pieces together.

It's also hard to recommend this book to any category of investors. It's clearly not a getting started guide for the beginners because there is no introduction to the market. And the serious investors would probably rather read the original works of those star investors.

Danna Beal explores issues close to anyone's heart who is of working age and is working! Ms. Beal, who spends much of her time traveling the country talking to professional groups as well as doing work with companies, asserts that each of us have an essence of who we are, hidden underneath the protective layer of our ego. This essence is fundamentally protected by the ego, but that which protects it actually suppresses it. We are then, ego driven, forced to play our role at work. This role requires that we are the star of the show and feel powerful by doing things like gossiping or not taking responsibility for our actions.
What's the answer? Find your role, as ego, mine is Rocky! (Always almost producing the result, looking good in the process, with a big heart, getting screwed by the man! Should have won, really!) Once you recognize your role and the part your ego plays in the production of work you can move beyond it and allow you natural talent and joy take over.
Tired of that feeling on Sunday of dread about going back to work? READ THIS BOOK.

and you can clearly get her message that runs through- out the book. What I found most helpful was she defines the ambiguous game playing and ego roles that go on in a work enviroment. You can by reading this book get a birds eye view of this -process- and build your confidence knowing these people are trapped in roles they may not even be aware of but with this book you have insight and awareness to rise above it and see your own ego at work-this book is freedom.Rather than feel slighted next time by a co-worker keep in mind this person is trying to live up to some primetime expectation-and its your job to help them live it because corporate culture is full of these hopeless gyrating pychopaths-my opinion-but on a kinder note once -u-instill this authors advise into yourself your human essence of compassion will transfer nonvebally-real confidence-to your co-worker and they will begin to relate to you from the same level.Although big ego's can be intertaining they often follow unconcious and unreal ambitions blindly-only to end up as lonely lost souls on death beds chasing desperate gods and expiring in teriffied last gasps. My advise is find a talent and to discover that you need to know who you are and that takes looking at yourself from a dynamic perspective because what you are looking for you will never see but only glimpse.Once your remove your status expectations about your primetimed self your talent will surface and lead you to prosperity. Good luck my friend.

To write her ground breaking book, Tragedy In The Workplace: The Longest Running Show In The Country, Danna Beal draws upon her more than twenty years as a professional business consultant and trainer working in all kinds of industries to create a new model for understanding how the modern workforce is besieged with envy, fear, battling egos, power competitions, office politics, cliques and power struggles, personal agendas, dishonesty, managers disempowering employees, co-workers sabotaging one another, as well as the general and pervasive atmosphere of insecurity in today's workplace. Using theatrical metaphors, Beal shows readers how they can cast others in roles to play out their own workplace dramas and by doing so, come to grips with workplace problems, issues, and personalities in order to minimize anxiety, resolve disputes, increase job satisfaction levels, and enhance productivity and the corporate bottom line. Tragedy In The Workplace is very highly and invaluable reading especially recommended to business owners, managers, personnel directors, and anyone caught up in the age old games of office politics.

Her corporate background helped to flesh out the "actors", so identifiable on our own stages of life. As a Licensed Massage Therapist for over 12 years, I see and touch the "fallout" from the workplace daily and, am delighted to point my clients in the direction of this compelling book.

I had the opportunity of reading The Tragedy In The Workplace, by Danna Beal during the Thanksgiving Holiday period. Reading it gave me another reason to be grateful. I found it to be full of truths which can be discovered in various venues by thoughtful people who are willing and able to listen to their inner voice. Although "Tragedy" is billed as a business book, I found it to be of a profoundly spiritual nature, which would help anyone with relationships of all kinds, e.i., business, family, and personal. In particular, I enjoyed the uplifting nature of the book, wherein the author took the high ground when it came to discussing sensitive issues, and no vulgarity or unseemly discussions were utilized, but at the same time anyone should have been able to relate the principles taught to their own situations, of whatever nature. In other words, Danna communicated well without resorting to the lowest common denominator, as is prevalent in much of today's writings. I was specifically impressed with the teachings of principles regarding: Synergism to achieve worthwhile goals, Focus on our spiritual cores which have unlimited potential, Accepting personal responsibility for results, How to break out of self-imposed prisons, Recognizing the spiritual nature of our fellow beings, An excellent treatment of the power of forgiveness - both for yourself and others, and The problems associated with judging. Reading Danna's book, reminded me of a phrase I have been using for years: "There are no rewards and no punishments, only consequences." Like this thoughtful book, it is apparent that its author, Danna Beal is a winner.

                            Sincerely, Laurence H. Keim

When Callie learns that the man she loves is somehow connected to the man who killed her late husband, she confronts Tom. But he informs her that his hands are tied by the National Security Agency and he can tell her nothing.

Despite the secrecy surrounding Tom and the NSA, Callie decides to find out for herself exactly what is going on and how Tom may have been involved in her husband’s death. Using her investigative skills, Callie throws herself into the most important mystery she has ever attempted to solve.

Will their affection be able to stand the strain? And what was God’s plan in bringing Tom and Callie together—marriage or merely answers for her questions about Bryan’s death?

                                                Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Interesting ending but better environmental report.......2007-05-20

This is an interesting ending to the Million Dollar series but more interesting is the commentary made on New Orlean's precarious environmental condition in relation to it's urbanization. Before Katrina hit, Clark was already writing about how dangerous it was to hold back the Mississippi and even more importantly (which we still don't hear about), the effect this is having on the bayous.

5 out of 5 stars Callie's Most Personal Case Yet.......2005-12-04

Four years ago, Callie Webber's world was shattered when her husband was killed in a boating accident. A man named James Sparks was out boating drunk and didn't even see Brian in the water. Since that horrible day, Callie has managed to recover from her grief, partially thanks to her job investigating charities for the J.O.S.H.U.A Foundation on behalf of her boss, Tom Bennett. Tom and Callie have also fallen in love, and Callie hopes to marry him soon.

Ten days ago, Callie overheard a conversation where Tom took responsibility for Brian's death. Shocked, Callie asks for an explanation, only to be told that Tom can't tell her anything because of his work for the NSA. Brian's accident is a matter of national security? How can this be?

While Tom can't tell Callie anything, he does encourage her to poke around on her own, which she immediately starts to do. Almost immediately, she begins to discover that the things she thought she knew about that fateful day aren't true. Following the faint trail she can find, she begins to piece together an entirely different picture of events. But what exactly is Tom's roll in all of this? Will God help her forgive him or will Callie turn her back on Tom and God?

I must confess, this is the book in the series I've been most anxious to read since I started the series. It didn't disappoint. After the first couple chapters, which are a good introduction for those who haven't read the previous four books in the series, the action takes off. I had trouble putting the book down several nights in a row because the suspense was killing me.

About half way through, the plot moves to New Orleans and things slow down a little. After the break neck pace of the first half, it feels slow, but in actuality, things are still moving forward.

I also found this part interesting in light of the recent hurricanes. The problems that were an issue in the disaster there were discussed briefly in this book, which came out a year before hand. Just a few throw away lines, really, but they caught my attention.

Each book in the series has been personal for Callie in some way, with each one hitting closer to home. As a result, we've been able to see her grow to the point where she is strong enough to deal with the truth she learns from the investigation. Not that she doesn't go through some incredible moments of weakness and pain. Callie is a very human character, which is one of the things I have always loved about her.

Forgiveness is a very obvious theme in the book, both God's forgiveness of us as well as forgiveness of each other. It's not preachy, however, but a good reminder for every day life.

The writing style still isn't as polished as some series I read, but this time around was actually the smoothest of the series. I had no trouble reconnecting to these characters from the very first page.

While not a requirement by any means, this book will be most enjoyed after reading others in the series. All of them are highly entertaining and I recommend them to Christian mystery lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational mystery in New Orleans investigating a charity.......2005-05-29

Callie Webber knows that she loves Tom Bennett, but is bothered with Tom's past and his secrecy regarding his work with the National Security Agency. She also knows that somehow, Tom blames himself for the accidental death of Callie's first husband.

Callie works for Tom as an investigator for the J.O.S.H.U.A. foundation which donates grants to charitable organizations. Callie's position is to recommend which of numerous charity possibilities are to benefit from Tom's generosity. For this particular assignment, Callie is sent to New Orleans to uncover some of Tom's past and to meet his family while working with a charity for children with rare diseases called Family HEARTS. This organization was formed to assist Tom's niece who is also a victim of a rare disease.

While reading THE BUCK STOPS HERE, you really need to first meet the characters from reading the previous book, A QUARTER FOR A KISS. Even though this is the fifth book in the series, the previous book is needed to understand the characters and their relationships to each other. Yes, you probably could read this as a stand alone, but you really wouldn't understand the situation of Callie's job, her life, Eli, or Tom. The past history is important to THE BUCK STOPS HERE.

Some people frown on reading Christian mysteries; however, I find each of Mindy Clark's books enthralling and delightful while knowing each character better. These are fast paced, action adventure novels with the characters' integrity being the center point. Her books are not really Christian, but probably more inspirational. The characters, especially Callie, view their religion as a part of their daily life. Some real people also have that viewpoint. Callie considers her religion to be private and while you read about her, you discover that this private relationship regarding her religion is what gives her character strength.

THE BUCK STOPS HERE is fast-paced and a well-organized novel. The characterization is superb. Each character develops depth with each page. The sequence of Callie's investigation perfectly matches the reading pace. I thoroughly enjoy these novels and I am wondering about the next one. What will the title be? Will the two-dollar bill be next or what title could you use with a five-dollar bill?

Mindy Starns Clark has written now five books in THE MILLION DOLLAR MYSTERIES SERIES involving Callie Webber. She lives in Louisiana and is also a wife and mother.

Other reviewers have outlined the plot line adequately. I just wanted to add that "The Buck Stops Here" exemplifies what Christian fiction should be. Faith adds dimension and depth to Callie's character without preaching. Clark also does a fine job of leaving the action flow naturally without interruption. Good book--my introduction to the series. It won't be my last book read by this author.

This five book series has been the most captiving mystery/suspense series I have read. Callie Webber is a lawyer and a private investigator, now widowed when her husband was killed in a boating accident. Her boss, Tom Bennett, has a secret but is bound by oath to the National Security Agency to not discuss the what he knows. Through the series Callie, who works for Tom's Charitable Foundation (J.O.S.H.U.A.), must solve a murder mystery; aid in the capture of an illegal smuggling ring of Chinese immigrants; cracks open an art counterfeiting ring; and discovers who is the traitor in the Cipher Five Encription Team.
Tom has felt guilty about the failures of the Cipher Five and the NS involvement that lead to Callie's husband's death. But Callie, heart a full of love & understanding as she relies on her faith, is able to forgive Tom for his elusive behavior.
Each book is a thrilling suspense with a touch of romance, that I could not wait to read the next book in the series.

This updated version of The Buck Stops Here is filled with fascinating details that enliven the histories of the presidents of the United States, from George Washington to Bill Clinton. The lighthearted rhymed text will help readers remember the names of the presidents in sequence, and the pictures connect each president to his contributions--distinguished or dubious--to American history.

I loved this book as a child and it really influence me in my adult hood. I'm a political science master's candidate with an interest in constitutional law and I think having this book played a roll.

                                                I highly recommend it.

I have a first edition copy of this book, and even though I am now WAY out of the targeted age range, I still love it.

Instead of assuming that her (primarily) young readers would not be interested in historical facts, Provensen's excellent lyrics and drawings remind us that the presidents had faced difficult issues during their administrations. How those presidents dealt with them (or not) is what ultimately gives us history.

This updated version includes both a new entry for George H.W. Bush and an all-new entry for the administration of William Jefferson Clinton. I really like the 'Berlin wall graffiti' theme used for Bush's completed term, but was not crazy about the 'quilt' illustration used for Clinton.

The Buck Stops Here is an essential purchase whether you have young children, teach young children, or just want to see another perspective on this country's great history.

My grandmother gave me this book when I was 6 or 7. I can now recite all the presidents in order and it is honestly from associating their names with the pictures and jingles accompanying each executive. It's funny...I actually visualize in my head this book page-by-page when I'm trying to remember. It was one of my favorite, if not my absolute favorite, childhood book. "The Buck Stops Here" is a compact collection of sayings of Harry Truman. It is organized topically. I read it in search of quotes for a class on Harry Truman for which I was preparing. For this purpose I would rate it as successful. I ended up noting 16 entries. This book does provide the reader with an insight into Truman's thoughts and words. This book provides few memorable quotations to elevate your speech. I do not fault the book. Truman was common, not very quotable. It is often said that Republicans like to quote Democrats. After reading this book one will understand why Truman is rarely quoted. He was truly a common man in word and action. This is not one of the better quotation books which I have found.

                                                            Book Description

The Buck Stops Here is a collection of warm, intimate stories about Harry Truman and his administration and beyond, by David M. Noyes, an intimate friend and advisor to the President. Mr. Noyes never pulled any punches with Mr. Truman, who preferred it that way and the two did that for 30 years.

The Noyes memoirs, while warm and intimate, are truly an insider's account, and for that reason was kept inaccessible to scholars for many years. They are written from the view of a worldly writer, privileged to be as close to the President as he was. They reflect this closeness.

The Buck Stops Here is an inside look at how President Truman dealt with JFK, the Baptists, the Catholics, Joseph Stalin, George Marshall, Dean Acheson, and others, in a richly readable historical context.

David Noyes agonized with Mr. Truman over the many decisions he had to make and tells of discussions and arguments on the atom bomb, Marshall Plan, Dean Acheson, NATO, start of the CIA, and much more, never published before.
