Book Description

The Guide was created to provide employers and others involved in background investigations with a tool to help access information contained in public records. First published in 1987 with the title National Employment Screening Directory, the content has been expanded with each new edition. In addition, the information is updated extensively every two years. The book's format has been updated for the 9th Edition to make the directories easier and more convenient to use. Following an introduction offering tips on the value and use of public records for investigative purposes, The Guide contains five major sections: State Records Directory, Canadian Records Directory, Locator Directory, Federal Records Directory, and Educational Records Directory. The State Records Directory is arranged alphabetically by state. For each state, a brief introduction provides an overview of access to the state's records and includes the state's hot-line number for additional assistance. The State Record Directory includes contacts for obtaining corporation commission information, criminal records, driving and vehicle records, license verification through state boards, vital statistics (birth, death, marriage and divorce), UCC records (asset liens) and workers' compensation records. Listings detail procedures, fees and additional notes on accessing state records. Within the State Record Directory, courthouses are listed state-by-state for access to criminal, misdemeanor and civil records that are stored at the county level. Each state section ends with a city-county cross-reference, an atlas quality state map and a map index. When only an individual's address is known, the cross-reference, map and index can be used to determine the county of residence as well as surrounding counties. The Locator Directory provides a zip code, state and county cross-reference which can be used to verify the county where an addresses is located in areas where a city's boundaries may overlap more than one county. The Canadian Records Directory includes sources for Canadian Driving Records, Canadian Criminal Records and a listing of over 200 Canadian Schools. The Federal Records Directory begins with a brief description of the federal court system and how it can be used to access civil, criminal and bankruptcy cases. Listed by state, entries include the address, telephone number, and procedures for each district and bankruptcy court. Also included in the Federal Records Section are Federal Appellate Courts and sources for Military Records. The Educational Records Directory lists over 4,000 colleges, universities, and trade and technical schools. Listed alphabetically, each entry supplies the address and telephone number for the registrar's office, along with the policy and procedures for accessing information. Schools are also cross-referenced by state and city. The Guide to Background Investigations is indispensable as the most accurate and comprehensive nationwide directory to public record sources. The broad scope of the book combined with the depth and detail of its listings make it an excellent choice for researchers and investigators looking for a valuable yet affordable resource for background information.

Book Description

Written by a private investigator, this guide provides easy-to-understand instructions on how a woman can use the Internet and telephone to perform a confidential background check on her "significant other," whether it's a boyfriend, fiancé, or husband.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars More info wanted.......2002-12-02

It's well written in straight foreward style with good examples of WHY you should check someone out and how to start.
It has good summaries of where to go in the internet but needs more details.

5 out of 5 stars Inside Info!.......2002-01-04

I've read all the "background
checks" books, this is the
only one that was really
helpful. It's up to date
(unlike most of the others)
and very Internet-oriented.
It's the best by far.

5 out of 5 stars Very informative.......1999-09-23

Gives a good overview of how to use the Internet to run background checks from your home computer, and via phone calls. Easy to read and follow.

The Guide to Background Investigations is a great tool to have on your agency shelf. Besides the listings for all the addresses and phones for the county governments across the USA, another great feature is the maps; if you are wondering what counties border a targeted county, the maps are very useful. Also, the lists of which cities are in which counties is a great help. You'll find yourself consulting this Guide again and again. Get it!

                      5 out of 5 stars I can't wait to start cooking.......2000-01-13

I was lucky enough to work half a block from the restaurant "Now and Zen" in San Francisco. It became my regular lunch destination. I loved all of the dishes including the deserts that I tried. In fact, the strawberry shortcake was the best I'd ever had. I have not yet received the cookbook but am so excited to know I will be able to make these delicious dishes in my own home and I know what they should taste like. Once the restaurant closed I knew I had to get the cookbook.

5 out of 5 stars Not Your Mother's Lentil Loaf!.......2000-01-08

I'm a longtime vegan who loves good food. In my efforts to spare animals from suffering, I don't want to make myself a victim at the dinner table. This book helps enormously. The savory dishes can't be beaten, particularly for special holiday fare. I make the dairy-free "cheese" ball for New Year's parties every year. I highly recommend "Now and Zen" for elegant, taste-satisfying appetizers, main dishes, soups, etc. I consider the dessert section to be weak relative to the rest of the book. I may be vegan, but when I want a sugar fix, only the best will do. Whole wheat flour and rice syrup just don't cut it. Don't let these comments discourage you because the rest of the book is truly gourmet.

5 out of 5 stars Vegan with Flavor.......2000-01-04

Miyoko Nishimoto studied french cuisine before turning vegan and has managed to maintain the satisfying flavors of "dirty" cooking with her creative and sometimes mysterious recipes. Some of the unorthodox flavor combinations seem downright whacky but the result is always a pleasant surprise. Many of the dishes in this magnificent cookbook are as pleasing to the eye as they are to the palate and make quite an impression at dinner parties. I have served her Savory Tempeh and Vegetable Stew to die-hard meat eaters who ended up practically licking the bowl. A must for vegans and vegetarians but this book could also be inspiring to anyone who appreciates innovative cuisine.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite cookbooks!.......1998-11-14

This is a great cookbook for anyone who is interested in exploring vegan cuisine. The recipes and techniques are truly inventive and can be adapted to recipes from other sources. I think this cookbook should be on the shelf of every person who takes the art of cooking seriously!

1 out of 5 stars Don't spend your money on this book .......2005-06-02

There are better books out there to spend your money on. The copy I have was printed in 1993 and a lot of things have changed since this first edition.

It is useless for individual traders.

You would be better off to buy John Murphy's books; Mark Douglas' books and John L. Person's book.

                            4 out of 5 stars A Good Reference For QQQ's Investors!.......2002-12-31

Here's a book for the tech investor who wants to know what the different companies in the NASDAQ 100 do. There's a simple company profile, earning projection, revenue growth chart, and key financial ratios.

Since all of these things can be gotten over the Internet these days, the main benefit of this book is that it is in book form and you can pick it up for stock ideas in the tech area (except for IBM and HPQ).

The only thing that I found interesting was the author's Top 25 Picks for 2002-2003. This list includes all the big cap tech stocks except QCOM and has some comments about each choice. There's also an interesting discussion about the QQQ's and the Rydex funds and how it might be better for most investors to simply buy these instead of riding the ups and downs of these highly-volatile individual issues.

I would like to have seen a more lively format, but I guess this book wasn't meant for my entertainment. If you want to buy individual stocks within the NASDAQ 100, you will need more current information in addition to what is presented here.

The Bottom Line: It's a handy reference.

Now is the time to start those mutual-funds investments you've been planning to look into someday, much better than tomorrow, or next week, or similar future dates that never materialize. Kirk Kazanjian's book is the place to start. A funds expert who's written six investment books, who appears regularly on TV and radio, and who bought his first stock at age 5, Kazanjian details the history of mutual funds, explains why they're hot, why you should invest in them, what their drawbacks are, and how to get started, demystifying more than 8,000 mutual-fund choices (through 130 pages of performance data), and explaining how to create an investment plan targeted to your individual goals and risk tolerance. He then writes about index funds, stocks, and bonds, plus how to go about putting together your portfolio.

There are guidelines on when to buy and when to sell, the advantages of retirement plans, and the secrets of high-yield, low-risk money-market funds. Kazanjian describes a day in the life of a fund manager, indicates the 25 best Internet sites for investors, and reveals his personal picks of the 100 most promising funds for 1999. With a glossary of fund-investment terms, and a strong index, the Finance Guide provides a baseline of understanding. After that, it's up to you to avail yourself of Kazanjian's expertise. As he says, the average investor, through bad timing and a lack of discipline, performs poorly. What you need is to gain 20 years' worth of experience magically, or take advantage of the research from someone who already has it. Kazanjian says that "without question, mutual funds are the investment of choice among today's smart consumers." Then he shows you how to become a successful, savvy member of that club. --Stephanie Gold

                                    2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.........2000-12-08

Like many mutual fund investing books, this one was a bit of a disappointment. With the huge selection of funds from which to choose, the authors select just a few of their favorites and don't give ample justification for many of the funds' inclusion. The advice on building a fund portfolio was ho-hum--you can find the same information in any issue of a monthly investment magazine. Also, as with many investment books, the data and commentary quickly feel outdated.

5 out of 5 stars Fine mutual fund compilation.......2000-01-06

I have recently read several compilations of mutual fund data and, in my view, this is the best. Morningstar reviews 500 funds extensively, and Business Week reviews 885 equity funds (and an unknown number of bond funds, but who cares?). This book covers 9000 funds. The trade-off for the extensive coverage is less detail about each fund. If you want more material, and will only look at the major players, then Morningstar is the better bet. If you want to go mining for overlooked gems, as I did, then Kazanjian's book gives you a better chance of finding them.

Much of Morningstar's information is available on-line. Mutual Fund Magazine is also a good on-line source for information.

I read the previous review and would be very interested in hearing how Kazanjian's 1999 picks have fared. His reviews of what he considers to be top funds are interesting and thought provoking, even if they don't prove to be the very top funds for the coming year. Everybody's got to do the work and decide which funds match their own personality and what's best for themselves.

If you want to go fishing in the whole ocean of equity funds, stop first at this bait shop.

3 out of 5 stars Good, But Lacks Accountability For His Top Picks From 1999.......1999-12-22

Provides good overview of the mutual fund industry (basically the same material from his 1999 book). He also provides his list of "100 Powerhouse Performers for 2000" (Chpt. 5) and several recommended portfolios (Chpt. 6).

In "Guide to Mutual Funds 1999" he lists his 100 powerhouse performers for 1999. My problem with his new book is that he doesn't account for his 1999 picks.

When I first saw his "2000" book, I first looked to see how well his 1999 picks performed compared to the usual suspects (e.g., S&P 500, Russell 2000). Unfortunately, he does not list this information. If his picks performed well, then WHY NOT include this critical information, especially since this would help to establish credibility and sell more books. Since he does NOT provide this basic information, the logical inference would be that his picks did not perform that well (compared to other funds and indices).

Besides the overview of mutual funds, the main reason for buying this book (especially if you bought his 1999 book) is his fund recommendations. That presumes that his recommendations carry some weight. Although "past performance is no indication of future performance," I would like to see some track record of his prior recommendations. He seems to have done a great deal of research and his suggestions maybe very good, but with no track record, it's hard to put much faith in his picks.

Fund managers are held accountable for their picks and those that make fund recommendations should be as well.

                                    To the author (Kirk Kazanjian):

                                    1. How did your 1999 recommendations perform (overall and individually) compared to other funds and the main indices?

                                    2. Is there a single place (URL?) where readers can view the performance of all 100 picks from 1999?

                                    3. Why did you not include this information in your latest book?

                                      Book Description

This text explores the field of media ethics from a South African perspective. Grounded in ethical theory, it provides guidelines for individual ethical decision-making to media practitioners and media groups. The South African normative context under the previous and present political dispensations is analyzed as are current contentious issues, such as racism in the media, the plans for media development in South Africa, the reporting of violence and crime, the right to privacy, and the media and advertising. Included are rules of procedure and the code of conduct of the Press Ombudsman of South Africa; the constitution, code, and procedures of the Broadcasting Complaints Commission of South Africa, and the code of conduct of the Public Relations Institute of Southern Africa.
