5 Stars but poorly structured for a book on structure.......2007-02-14
Excellent content but poorly structured for a book on structure. Ms. Minto must like to sell consulting services with her book.
Superb content, poor presentation.......2006-05-11
I read the Pyramid Principle in 1995 and dutifully trained myself to use it, with a little help from a class with Ms. Minto.
The hardest part was realizing that the Pyramid Principle isn't about forcing your current writing into Minto's structure; it's having the courage to tear your argument apart and recraft it if you can't support it in a properly constructed pyramid.
It took effort and practice to master, but it was well worth it. My writing has been widely published, and my articles are often praised for their clarity. The clarity comes from Minto, plain and simple.
They should pipe this into a hospital room to save on anesthesia.......2006-02-07
It is VERY slow going, but you *do* get the impression that this is an important skill to have. The tips are good, and the examples are easy to comprehend. I dont think they should wait until you're in business to learn this. They should teach the Principle in highschool!... if you could stay awake long enough to learn it.
You Must Practice What You Read.......2006-01-09
I purchased this book primarily because it was referenced by several authors of other Mckinsey books that I've read. I was taken aback by the price of the book but I'm of the school of thought that great ideas need not come in large packages. As like many of the other reviewers, I found this book a tough read and had to break it down into smaller bite size readings. What I did that help me tremedously was build a Pyramid chart capturing the SCQ ---Answer using sticky notes. Once built, I was able to easily see the ideas she was presenting and was able to clarify my thinking and writing substantially.
For years I struggled with getting my ideas out of my head and onto paper coherently. Now, I have a great tool that speeds this process up and get my point across succintly.
Hard to find, hard to read, expensive, puts you to sleep, but brilliant and unique! A must read!.......2005-09-26
After an exhaustive search, I ordered this book directly from the author. Make sure to get the more recent 1996 edition, not the 1987 edition.
The book is awesome in that it applies concepts in a way that I haven't seen anywhere else!
I haven't finished the book yet, it is painful to read, partly because Minto doesn't always apply her own principles! However, there are many great diagrams, and the examples cited are entertaining. For example, she provides examples of "intellectually blank assertions".
I force myself to read a chapter in the book each month. It is painfully intellectual, and sometimes puts me to sleep. But many great books are that way.
I bought the book to help me with my business proposal writing. This book is well worth it, especially for all consultants and business people.

Woefully out of date.......2006-10-06
I ordered this book after having used the same series to form an LLC in Pennsylvania. Having moved to Colorado I thought I'd try again. This book is incredibly out of date. First of all, the phone number you call to get a copy of the forms on disk doesn't work. The website has changed too. And the info in the book is out of date. They don't even give you the website of the secretary of state to file your forms for $25. He tells you to mail them in with a $50 check. In fact, the paper filing fee is now $125. Makes me wonder what else in the book is not accurate.
Don't waste your money.

A MUST HAVE!!.......2007-07-16
This is one of those MUST HAVE cookbooks! Even if you don't use cookbooks, you will find this one fascinating just to read; and then I can almost promise you will want to make something from it! I was floored by the things in it that I never ever imagined you could make yourself. I got my copy from my mother in law after pulling it out of her basement and sitting down to copy a couple recipes; she gave it to me. It is the one cookbook I would miss the most out of my vast collection.
Better than your favorite delicatessen!.......2007-05-29
I am under the impression that there are two versions of this cookbook - the first written by the authors before the days of microwave ovens, slow cookers and other more modern, affordable kitchen appliances and then the other a new version, rewritten years later to take advantage of the new appliances - but the basic recipes are basically the same. Only the methods are different, where they can be improved or speeded up.
You can find everything you ever loved to buy at German or Italian delicatessens - the sauerkraut, the pickles, the bagels, the Italian sweet sausage, the Italian spicy sausage, the stuffed peppers, EVERYTHING I love. The first time I found the old version in the Army Post library, I photocopied half the book and enjoyed all the great stuff I wasn't able to buy in a foreign country. The authors say they love to make all these things from scratch (even homemade ketchup!) because they don't want their families to have all the food additives in commercially prepared foods. Frankly, I'm not so squeamish -- but I LOVE the food - think corned beef and real, smoked pastrami and cracked olives. The newer version uses blenders, heavy-duty mixers, home smokers, microwave ovens, no matter what you use, recipes are easy to follow, ingredients are not usually hard to find. Enjoy!

When my house burned down and I lost all my cookbooks, the one favorite I coouldn't replace is this one. I know two people who own it and I've been borrowing it a lot, esp. during summer/harvest. I need it for jams, pickles, sauerkraut. At this moment I have sauerkraut bubbling away and a rye sourdough starter that's just ready to use.
I don't know of another book that covers all these things and...graham crackers, deviled ham, chutney. Make it all! Just about my favorite cookbook and now I've found it!!
Worth the search.......2002-11-05
My copy of this book is spine-snapped in several places, dog-eared, and spotted and soiled throughout, in spite of all my care. I searched for years to find a copy to give to a fellow "basics" cook and she was as thrilled with it as I have been. The anise cookies are fabulous, as are the pretzels and, in fact, every other recipe I've made. A Must Have for a serious cook's bookshelf.
Truly Unique.......2002-10-14
I found a reference to this after having searched the internet for marshmallow recipes. The recipe was posted online, but I bought the book figuring it was the right thing to do. I had NO idea how delightful this would be. Most of the recipes I've never seen anyplace else (gingerbread cookie MIX!?!) The marshmallow recipe alone has won me a couple marriage proposals. If you have any impulse to cook or bake, please buy this book. You will be amazed.

Obsolete information.......2003-10-03
This book should not be sold any longer. Since it was published back in 1999 - and is now close to 5 years old - it contains a lot of mis-information. The U S Treasury Department has changed many of the rules and regulations concerning savings bonds - most notably over the past 18 months. A person purchasing this book to learn more about U S Savings Bonds will get good information, and bad information. The problem is that he/she will not know what information is good, and what information is bad. Thus, by not buying the book, the savings bond owner is probably better off. I do not challenge the idea that it is important for savings bond owners to learn all about their own collection of savings bonds. They need to know the rules and regulations, so that they can make informed, intelligent decisions about keeping or cashing in bonds - and the proper time to do it. But any printed book is not the place to find it: the information becomes obsolete too quickly. The internet is the place to find accurate, up-to-date information about savings bonds. Because any web site can be updated quickly and easily, the information presented there is more likely to be current. Because it takes the author so long to prepare the book, and then the time it takes to get it printed (published) and then put into the distribution piepline, I suggest that any book about savings bonds is already obsolete the day it becomes available for sale to the public. Furthermore, according to reliable sources who work for the Savings Bond Division of the U S Treasury Department, numerous additional changes will be forthcoming during the next 2 years. For my money, the internet is the ONLY place to find all the information that you could possibly need to know about U S Savings Bonds. Just type in "savings bonds" in any search engine.
Savings Bonds: When to Hold, When to Fold.......2001-03-10
Surprisingly,this book is enjoyable and easy to read. It contains information, I have not found anywhere else, that is vital to know before investing in savings bonds. If you already own savings bonds, you will benefit from reading this book before you sell them. Savings bonds are not the simple investment most people believe they are. I checked this book out from the library, but found it so valuable I am purchasing a copy for myself.
Excellent tool for understanding & using US Savings Bonds.......2000-12-18
This book contains more in-depth information than theinformation available from government publications or the website. Use that information and thatwebsite, but also get this book. I use the free downloadable SavingsBond Wizard from the government website, and also set up an Excelspreadsheet to keep up bond statements as outlined in this book--whichis a more effective statement to aid decision-making. Some of theissues covered in this book: don't trust your bank to know whatthey're doing / understanding interest rates / timing issues re:redemption and maturity / organizing your bonds and keeping records /recovering lost bonds / tracking your investment (using the wizardand/or a statement you develop yourself or purchase from a service) /deciding to hold or fold -- evaluating performance of your bonds /comparing savings bonds to other investment options / taxation issuesinluding estate/gift/inheritance tax issues / using savings bonds forretirement / exchanging for HH current-income bonds / purchasing /reissuing / redeeming / tax-free for higher education feature / bondsas gifts / the new I bond / forms of ownership / bonds for minors /resources. Savings Bonds When to Hold When to Fold them.......2000-06-17
This is a completly thorough book on every type of US Savings Bonds with good advice on how to purchase them, when to purchase them, and when to redeem them as well as how to redeem them. It has good structural content, with easy to follow guidelines. It also contains addresses to send to for more information. Like any book in this field, by the time an author has it published, it has some obsolete material, but I must say I still found it very useful. The reason for my most current purchase is that I have purchesed two other copies and have given them each away as gifts.

Helpful pointers.......2006-05-08
As of this review, I think half of the sites in this book are gone. However, this book gave me many pointers to what to look for in the internet and how to interpret it. For sites that's still available, like msn.com, bloomberg, big charts... she really did a good job on explaining how to utilize the free resources on these sites for investing. 4 stars for the good read and nice examples.

Book Description
During recessions state government fiscal crises are widespread, as states find their revenues inadequate to meet their expenditure demands. This volume shows that state fiscal crises have only one significant cause: revenue downturns associated with recessions. Other analysts have argued that fiscal crises are the result of an interaction of many complex causes, including inadequate tax bases, increasing expenditure demands, and limits placed on state governments by voters. This analysis examines these other factors and shows that while they present significant challenges to state policymakers, they are not the cause of fiscal crises. The book presents an improved methodology for measuring cyclical variability of revenues and uses this methodology to show that there is no way to restructure state tax systems in order to appreciably reduce the fiscal stress associated with recessions. Fiscal stress can be lessened by setting aside revenues during prosperous years in a rainy day fund, but current rainy day funds are not large enough to eliminate the fiscal stress caused by recessions.

heart jerking.......2002-04-21
I have read a lot of real life stories in my time, but to have someone tell about becoming deaf over night and telling it in a posative way really beats other writers hands down. I read it cover to cover and although I was tired and want to say the tears were from that, I know differently. The tears were of laughter and pain. All of which Elizabeth felt many times. Her contrast to the story was a woman named Kiley, boy if Kiley only knew that she was in such good hands all along.

This story is of a woman named Elizabeth with a career and family, that is changed drastically. I enjoyed reading "I Can't Hear You Laughing...Anymore". It put knots in my stomach as I read it chapter for chapter. I think it is a book that everyone should read if you like books based on true stories. I can't wait to see what she comes out with next!
I havn't read this good a book in a while.......2002-04-12
I have not read a book that made me really feel emotions like this one has. Elizabeth AnderHowrad is my new favorite author. She not only told a great story of overcoming her deafness when it was literally overnight. I love the poems she uses in her wroks. The CPR scene started a dramatic beginning and the book never once lets you down.
Truly amazing, I hope to meet her one dya
