5 out of 5 stars Great Book to Learn to Debate.......2000-08-02

I bought this book for my son who debates at High School (in Australia) - where he receives very little good coaching from his teacher. This book explained the basics of debating to him (and me). The tips to improve speaking styles were great - simple things like a great tip on how to deal with nervousness.

My son loved the book because it is written in such a funny, non-stuffy style. He read sections aloud to me - the parts that made him laugh - and I found them intriguing enough to want to read it myself. I read it myself and now have a much better idea of what is going on during his school debates.

This book is great.

5 out of 5 stars A Quantum Leap in Hands On Debating Instruction!.......2000-08-02

As a former Australian Primary Schools Debating champion I have never had the pleasure to read a more cogent and succinct anaylysis of debating. Not only have I prospered as a debater from reading this book but after lending it to my team we became a more effective and enthusiastic operating unit.

I have searched far and wide for a better debating book but I am yet to find one. Bravo Hooke and Philips - World Debating Champions and now Champion Debating Instructors. This book remains a debaters bible and best friend.

As a debating coach, I found this book extremely useful. My team enjoyed reading it, and found lots of helpful advice, hints and examples.

1 out of 5 stars Too little content and too much ego.......2000-04-20

As a debating coach and adjudicator I found little in this book to recommend it. Australian debaters would be better off with the excellent Australian Debating Federation Manual. The analysis is superficial and the comments are not very helpful. More offputting is the negative commentary from the authors regarding their opponents in debates. This provides a bad example for other debaters. Save your money.

    Book Description

Antitrust in Germany and Japan presents an innovative, comparative analysis of the development and enforcement of two antitrust regimes, illustrating how each was shaped by American occupation strategies and policies following World War II. First imposed in 1947, the antitrust controls in Germany and Japan were the world's first outside the United States. Those enacted in Japan continue in force, whereas in Germany, following a decade of debate, the occupation legislation was superseded in 1975 by the Law Against Restraints of Competition.

This study explores the ironies and errors that led to the enactment of the German and Japanese statutes and emphasizes the unexpected degree of convergence that has occurred during the past fifty years through amendment and practice. It compares in detail the institutional structure and processes for the enforcement of antitrust controls as well as the system of remedies and sanctions available under each statute. It notes the debates in Germany and Japan over the effectiveness of statutes, particularly the still timely debate in 1970s Germany over a proposal for criminal sanctions. Antitrust in Germany and Japan reveals many unexpected and controversial similarities between the two antitrust regimes and demonstrates the extent to which American policy toward Germany determined American policy in Japan not only during presurrender planning but also throughout the occupation. It also challenges the prevailing view of the relative strength of antitrust controls in Germany relative to the weakness of antitrust in Japan.

This book will be of interest to corporate lawyers as well as to legal historians and scholars of political economy.

All of these recipes I've tried (at least 5 in the last week) in the last week -- plus the ones I've drooled over making up new holidays in the near future -- to make them are delicious renditions of things you may have previously been scared to eat. The oatmeal filled date cookies are phenomenal, and the selection of cakes and ice cream and fruity desserts, oh my. There's even a whole section on chocolate desserts.. a good, solid dessert cookbook that tells you exactly what you're eating (whole, unprocessed foods and the nutrition breakdown to boot). This is good stuff.

      5 out of 5 stars delicious!.......2002-01-24

you'll have to work a bit to track this book down, but its definitely a classic. the eating well magazine books have been staples of good cooking for many people, and this one is no exception. unlike the others, which focused on a variety of foods, this one focuses exclusively on deserts. cakes, pies, cookies, you name it, all of it is healthier than you may believe. what's more, none of the taste is lost. when reaching for some new ideas, i tend to flip though the pages of my eating well cook books. this one is definitely a hit for deserts that people love. highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Must Read for PMO Directors and Sr. Management.......2005-04-22

Steve's first book (Advanced Project Portfolio Management and the PMO with Gerald Kendall) transformed the perception of a PMO from a project cost management/efficiency cop to a potential profit center, raising the bar for most organizations. He (along with Richard Lanza) has pushed the envelope again making the case for the PMO as the best qualified entity for preventing financial losses to the corporation due to project fraud.

The term project fraud may at first seem a harsh characterization of the poor project success rates that most management accepts as the status quo. However, Rollins and Lanza do an excellent job of mapping the COSO Control Framework to the execution of project objectives and the performance of project personnel. They include diagrams, descriptions and questions to assist in the performance of a Project Fraud Risk Assessment. The underlying conclusions are that poor manmagement of project fraud can seriusly hurt corporate business objectives and that the PMO is best suited to perform this function.

This is must reading for PMO Directors struggling to get the visibility and executive blessing needed to effectively fulfill their mission.

5 out of 5 stars Must Reference for Project Management and SOX Compliance.......2005-03-19

This is a necessary reference for effective project management and Section 404 compliance under Sarbanes-Oxley. The book provideds an abundance of checklists and questions that will make this an ongoing well used reference for ensuring continued corporate governance. The reality of project fraud and its widespread impact is clearly spelled out. Rollins and Lanza accomplished their objective with well stated structures for breaking down the work steps needed to prevent fraud and establish effective internal controls for managing projects. You get your money's worth with this book.

5 out of 5 stars Working Together - Collaborating to Beat Fraud.......2005-02-24

As a project manager, I was very interested to read this book. The consequences of unchecked fraudulent activity in the public and private sectors does more than affect the "bottom line." It erodes public confidence in the ability of managers to protect the assets assigned to their care.

Within organizations, fraud robs employees of the resources they need to fulfill their obligations. This book gives project managers, auditors, and fraud investigators a "blueprint" for taking effective collaborative action to both uncover and prevent fraud during the life of projects. Since so much business activity is project-based, it's a wonder we had to wait so long for it.

The book's organization makes it easy to follow the argument that fraud can be dealt with effectively. The Preface clearly states the purpose of the book. Each chapter is divided by important topics within. This is accurately reflected in the table of contents. Each chapter is also neatly summarized at the end. It has a helpful index at the back of the book as well.

The Appendices are helpful, too. They supplement the text by providing a "List of Sarbanes-Oxley Act Sections," "Decision Tree for Software Development Projects," and "Project Fraud Management Policy Template."

The authors have the necessary professional credentials and the extensive experience needed to synthesize the subject matter. They have the all-important credibility to support their contentions.

I thought the book brought together the best of project management and financial auditing to offer concerned professionals a "roadmap" to more control. It provides checklists and guidelines that enable project managers and internal auditors to work together.

The book should, of course, appeal to the above-mentioned professionals. It should also be read and understood by top-level corporate managers who want to make use of available professional skills to effectively fight fraud.

5 out of 5 stars Determining Fraud bs. Mismanagement.......2005-02-12

Sub-Title: Preventing Project Fraud And Ensuring Sarbanes-Oxley Compliance

Sarbanes-Oxley is one of those things that you really wish Congress had to apply to themselves rather than just imposing it on the rest of us. It has certainly made life interesting. In terms of project management, it's intent is to ensure that a project proceeds to work on its stated mission, correctly utilizing the projects resources, and eliminate improper dealings with project vendors for personal enrichment.

A key problem is to distinguish between fraud and mismanagement, conspiracy and incompetence. An interesting project discussed in the book is the California State Welfare Automation Project where the project was so confused that they still can't say if fraud ocurred. From this example the reporting procedures that may prevent the reocurrance of such situations is developed by looking as many areas where fraud can at least be expected to occur.

This situation wouldn't be so critical if the law weren't written so that people can be put in jail for not instituting proper controls where proper controls are a matter of opinion. This book gives the best analysis of current thinking, subject to change of course as the courts deal with the problem.

Management advisor Don Schmincke believes leaders can thrive in the third millennium by utilizing principles developed during the first. They originate in a moral code known as Bushido that was followed by samurai warriors in ninth-century Japan and formalized by Daidoji Yuzan as the Code of the Samurai some seven centuries later. Now updating them as The Code of the Executive, Schmincke points out parallels between past and present and suggests this connection is a natural. In those days, he writes, the shogun was regulatory government, feudal barons the hard-driving CEOs, real estate their business, and samurai the executives hired to oversee it all. These samurai relied upon their rigid ethical guide to discharge both professional and personal responsibilities favorably, Schmincke notes, and today's corporate leaders can succeed by similarly following its teachings. Dividing fundamentals into categories such as "Personal Principles," "Roles and Responsibilities, and "Education and Development," he shows how ancient wisdom on cooperation, integrity, accountability, sacrifice, power, and so on can apply to contemporary situations. On "Respecting Personnel," for example, he suggests "reasonable argument" be used to "gain agreement" on serious infractions--while "for trivial issues" it is better to be "indulgent and patient and not sweat the insignificant." --Howard Rothman

            Book Description

"The dynamic principles that have endured through the millennia are beautifully embodied in this short yet substantial book."-Stephen Covey, author of The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People

More than a thousand years ago, a group of business executives developed a set of principles for organizational leadership in a competitive market. Those executives were the samurai of ninth-century Japan, and their rigid code of ethics, known as bushido, was one of the most effective frameworks for management in history. The Code of the Executive is business adviser Don Schmincke's modern interpretation of the Code of the Samurai-ancient wisdom written for today's corporate warriors. These principles provide a dynamic system of practical and moral training for effective leadership. In addition to interactive strategies for relating to the business world, this philosophy provides at its core a guide to the inner development necessary for consistent and long-term success. A terrific gift for a friend, relative, new graduate, or business associate, The Code of the Executive is filled with relevant wisdom and offers an enlightened path to business fulfillment.

4 out of 5 stars Bringing Core Values Back to Business.......2003-04-23

Two of my favorite books on leadership are The Art of War, and The Code of the Samurai. I've used both of these in writing my book the Art of Spiritual Warfare. This particular book by Don Schmincke takes ancient principles and applies them to the leader in business. With the recent scandals hitting the headlines a new look at some ancient codes of behavior may be exactly what is needed in today's business world. Schmincke uses the same type of cadence, poetry, and prose used by the ancient writers of the Samurai era. For the most part it works quite well. It's a bit of a stretch when talking about ancient codes but bringing in modern slang and pc style issues such as how to dress nicely or avoiding "sucking up" to the boss under such broad categories as Executive Knowledge and Leadership for warrior generals and such. However, his points are well taken. It's a good little book to keep in your desk, and remind you of the higher principles every leader should strive for. I also suggest going back to the original books by Sun Tzu and Daidoji Yuzan.

5 out of 5 stars Great CEO Tool!.......2001-02-06

Great interpretation of an ancient philosphy for CEOs. Instead of these airy philosophical renderings that we see in many management books today, the author shows his experience with the thousands of CEOs he's coached over the years. I could apply it directly to my executive team. This translation allows specific business practice so it can be applied for bottom line impact without having to waste time intellecualizing it.

            1 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Disappointing.......2000-05-03

Maybe I expected too much. I was hoping for a work as impactful as Sun Tzu. Instead of allowing the reader to interpret and philosophize, the author made a well-intended but misdirected effort to force the code into specific business principles and issues. The translation simply falls flat and reads like a word processed document where "samuri" was globally replaced with "executive." Maybe I'm just a cruel, heartless cynic but I wish the author would have cut back on the handholding allowed the reader more intellectual room for personal interpretation.

5 out of 5 stars A book which enhances one's personal and professional lives........1998-09-15

THE CODE OF THE EXECUTIVE, by Don Schmincke

The Code of the Executive ("The Code") is a long overdue, yet ancient, wake-up call for all executives but most especially for CEOs. The philosophy expounded in these moral, ethical and business precepts, called principles in the book, will enhance the personal as well as professional lives of those executives who follow the philosophy. The way is arduous for the executive who does so but the benefits are great. Inner growth, success and security in one's professional life await the intrepid executive. "The Code" puts forth a philosophy of responsibility, for individual executives and for organizations. A way of thinking and behaving is posited. Ethical and healthiest growth for the organization is at the forefront, yet the CEO is the symbol of the organization and must be supported as strongly. "The Code" asks all executives to give their organizations and their CEOs the utmost in loyalty and duty. Even more so, the CEO of an organization is required to give a greater amount of his or her life to the organization in return for greater benefits than the lower level executives enjoy. By following the precepts in "The Code" an executive can climb in the organization while being an aid to the real success of the organization. Those who wish to one day become an executive will also find their way made much smoother by following these precepts. In one's private life, the lessons of "The Code" are available to repair or build and enhance lasting relationships, to gain control over your ego, mind and life, and to balance your life between the inner and outer person, between an ideal and the ego. These lessons are similar in most cases, and the same in some cases, as the precepts handed down by Jesus, Buddha, Mohammed, the Boy Scouts, and many more whose philosophies betokened a peaceful and balanced humanity. When I first read "The Code," I disagreed with most of what I read, until I read about half of the book. Then, I "got" it and was able to move my ego aside as I read. I had been reading with a modern mindset. I was thinking that people owed only as much loyalty as a paycheck would buy and no more! Then I realized that "The Code," besides being a business book, is a manual for those seeking to belong to something greater than themselves (as we all are) and who want to have their lives stand for something at the same time. When "The Code" speaks of death, in the first chapter, it seemed like it was asking too much of an executive, but the "death" it was speaking of was the death of the ego and the philosophical idea that "freedom's just another word for nothing else to lose." In other words, one can only risk what one is willing to lose. Of course, preparation and self-control make the risk, which is often necessary for success and growth, tolerable. So, "The Code" builds, from the first precept to the last. Each precept relies on the ones which come before for true appreciation of the wisdom is being offered. In conclusion, I wholeheartedly recommend that every executive, including all CEOs, read Don Schmincke's book, THE CODE OF THE EXECUTIVE. It is a road map for ethical and successful organizations, large, mid-sized and small. This is a very useful tool for growth even for the sole-practitioner, who is the CEO of his or her firm, or the head-of-household who wants to do the best possible job in his or her 'organization'. As a New York attorney, and CEO of my own firm, this book has become a golden treasure in my personal and business library. THE CODE OF THE EXECUTIVE has, in a relatively short period of time, proven itself to be a valuable asset in both my personal and professional lives.

5 out of 5 stars A book for life that offers a paradigm shift of focus........1998-09-11

In ancient times, Samurai warriors lived by a rigid code known as Bushido. At the heart of this "code of life" lie forty-seven ancient principles. In his stellar book "The Code of the Executive", Don Schminke has rebirthed these ancient principles and codes, and the practice of Bushido.

"The Code of the Executive" contains ninety-eight pages of ancient text used by the Samurai warriors on a daily basis as they lived and fought. This text has been updated for use by executive managers in the 21st Century. In its entirety, this small book contains the entire code for successful leadership. Mr. Schminke offers these essential tools of life and leadership to managers throughout the world in the conferences that he conducts, now the philosophy is available to everyone in book form.

There is a myriad of books available to the business manager searching for enlightenment, interested in improving his skills, or satisfying a thirst for knowledge. Over the years I have read many of them. Unfortunately, virtually no page did I turn contain the philosophy essential to life. Not one page spoke of the foundation that we must establish before we can be successful in life. In fact, these books that I read spoke of business success as a tangibility to be acquired. Good managers do not become good managers with out a foundation. Executives can not effectively steer their organizations without Honor and Respect, without Integrity or Bravery. The principles necessary for success are not found, they are learned, they must be understood and practiced. The journey toward true leadership is profound and "The Code of the Executive" is the 21st Century Guide.

As a developing manager my journey continues. My own change, development, and growth can be traced. Mr. Schminke's book provided me with a paradigm shift of focus. My understanding of Role and Responsibility drastically changed as the Bushido introduced to me the concept of Death, and how all of the mighty principles are tightly woven around its strength. This book teaches that success is not found, the path to success cannot be memorized, and success cannot be taught. Business success coincides with life success. "The Code of the Executive" offers forty-seven principles of self fulfillment that must be learned, understood, and practiced.

Even though this book speaks in terms of the executive, it is not for a limited audience. The sooner that this book is read and the journey toward fulfillment begins the sooner that change and understanding will be realized. This journey is long and difficult. Once it begins, these principles will build the person who becomes the successful leader in life and business. I highly recommend "The Code of the Executive" as essential text for leadership training and development in all aspects of life. Students in high school or collage may never take a class as powerful as this self-study.

                Book Description

1911. Whether old or new, business methods are but tools by means of which we disclose, exercise and communicate human nature; but that human nature remains the same until changed in those individuals who, stirred by some hidden impulse, strive to improve it in themselves. This improvement as applied to business is obtained through an understanding of what is required to obtain its essentials; and this little book contains a few of the observations which Mr. Stockwell made of the best business characteristics through contact with some highly successful men.

                      Book Description

This volume brings together some of the best writing published in the journal Management Learning since its re-launch under this title in 1994. The selection very much reflects the mission of the journal to act as a showcase for innovative, international and interdisciplinary work which covers a wide gamut of issues connected to management, organizations, learning and knowledge. The field of management learning, widely drawn in this way, brings together some of the key preoccupations within several areas of management, organization studies and social science more generally. Learning and knowledge have become central themes within thee areas for several reasons, both practical and theoretical. These include the way that organizational learning is seen as a key source of competitive advantage, and the wider analysis that individuals and organizations now inhabit a `knowledge economy'. Theoretically, recent years have seen emerging understandings of the social significance of `communities of practice', whilst learning in its many manifestations is increasingly seen as being imbricated in issues of power. This latter points to one of the particular areas which has been a focus for the journal, namely more critically orientated approaches to management learning.

This collection provides readings grouped under six key headings which reflect where some of the most influential and provocative work in the field has been done over recent years, namely:

                      - Organizational Learning and Learning Organizations

                      - Individual Learning

                      - Critical Approaches to Management Education and Learning

                      - Pedagogical Practice

                      - Globalization and Management Learning

                      - Beyond Management Learning

Along with an editorial introduction, this volume will provide a unique and invaluable resource for anyone studying or researching management learning and cognate areas, by bringing together some of the best peer-reviewed work in the field.

                                Book Description

Volume 10 opens with Washington headquartered at the Continental army's encampment at Middlebrook, New Jersey, about seven miles northeast of New Brunswick, the location of the main British force under General William Howe. From this vantage point in the WaHChung Mountains, Washington could survey the country between Perth Amboy and New Brunswick while keeping an eye on the road to Philadelphia. Washington also considered the possibility that Howe might attempt to rendezvous his army with General Burgoyne's, thought to be en route from Quebec to Albany by way of Lake Champlain and the Hudson River.

For his part Howe, whose army outnumbered the Americans more than two to one, hoped to lure Washington away from his defensive positions and force a general engagement. When a series of British maneuvers in late June failed to bring on the desired fight, Howe evacuated his army from New Jersey to Staten Island, leaving Washington completely in the dark as to the enemy's next move and keenly aware of "the great advantage they derive from their navy." Although Howe had abandoned the idea of attacking the main Continental army, from his new disposition the British commander easily could join with Burgoyne via the Hudson, move upon the Philadelphia by way fot he Delaware river or the Chesapeake Bay, sail farther south into Virginia or to Charleston, South Carolina, or sail northward and invade one of the New England states.

Washington repositioned his army back at its old camp at Morristown, where it could better assist the American troops at Peekskill, New York, if Howe moved up the Hudson and yet still interfere with any British designs upon Philadelphia. Although surveillance reports revealed that the British were preparing for "a longer Voyage than up the North River," the British capture of Ticonderoga, New York, convinced Washington that Howe would take the northern route, and he swiftly marched the Continental army into New York State, where it remained until it became clear that the British fleet had gone out to sea. Washington then returned to New Jersey, where he made preparations to defend Philadelphia, but with several critical weeks of the summer campaign already passed, he confessed his puzzlement at his foe's decision to sail south.

"On a July morning ten years ago, Philippe Vigand, a young, vigorous, handsome publishing executive, was walking to work when he heard a "gigantic explosion."Stragely, nobody else seemed to have heard it...for the simple reason that it was in his head. For two months he lay in a coma. When he awoke, he was completely paralyzed, but his mind was intact. He was suffering from locked-in syndrome. After months of hospital care, Philippe was brought home when an infrared camera enabled him to "speak" and "write" by blinking his eyes.Written in two parts, the first by Philippe using the magic camera, the second by his wife, Stephane, this moving work traces the evolution of the illness and their relationship and shows how love and devotion can overcome almost anything."

5 out of 5 stars Courage in the face of a great trial.......2006-06-08

I enjoyed this book very much. Since our family experienced a horrible car accident nearly two years ago that has left our brilliant, now 11-year-old, daughter fully dependent on caregivers, I could relate to much of what Philippe and Stephane shared. It is most helpful to know we are not alone in our feelings of sadness, anger, and determined hope. I would love to learn more about this courageous family.

5 out of 5 stars From the Daughter's Point of View.......2000-05-18

Well, I am Philippe's daughter and I'd just like to say to everyone that this book is amazing and it'd be cool if you bought it because it's a great love story and it is a perfect description of what actually happened in those years of fighting and winning what we deserved. 5 out of 5 stars The Power of Conscious and Unconscious Character.......2000-02-25

"Only His Eyes Say Yes" is a truly wonderful saga about a family's struggle for freedom after a man was suddenly "locked in" by a severe stroke. Though it is down-to-earth and humerous, the book reaches deep into many of the tougher unexplored corners of human emotion.

I was profoundly struck at the very beginning of the book by the occurrence of and Philippe's recollection of dreams during his two-month coma. Somehow his brain kept functioning during that period, and it even had the wherewithal to begin work on the huge unexpected task of starting a new life. That experience provides us all with a tremendous insight into the powerful workings of the unconscious mind. I simply had no idea that such processes occurred. Carl Jung would have had a scientific field day with that data. And present day psychologists should learn important lessons from it.

                                  Thanks, Philippe and Stephane Vigand.

                                  5 out of 5 stars A lesson in love.......2000-02-14

Having read this book, we are all reminded what life is really about. As stated, love truly conquers all. The Vigand family should be a lesson to us all, through good times and bad.

5 out of 5 stars the most moving book i've read in years.......2000-01-21

that book goes deep down into the heart. It is a very courageous book. Both authors give a lot of them to others. Even in situation much easier to live than theirs you can't stop thinking to them and how they cope with everything. Best book i've read in years.
