Full of errors.......2001-05-10

I've been a travel agent and travel agency owner for more than a decade, and so started reading this book with a great deal of interest.

I hadn't even finished the first page before I fell off my chair with astonishment at the errors the author was perpetrating - 'a consolidation ticket is normally valid for a year and fully flexible'. This is completely wrong - consolidated/discounted tickets are always highly restricted.

I read on to page two. And major mistake two. 'A good travel agent can often save you more by exploiting IATA fare construction rules allowing you to fly up to 25% more miles between two points either free or for a small surcharge'. Again, dead wrong.

In more than ten years as a travel agent, I have never ever issued a single mileage based fare (such as the author advocates in the preceding paragraph). These days, with most fares being 'route based' rather than 'mileage based' it is exceeding rare to find such fares at good values.

Other parts of the book (which claims a 2000 publication date) are curiously out of date, probably because they have been culled from the author's newspaper columns over many years - for example, 'wait for the new generation of featherweight PCN digital mobiles, allowing people to call you wherever you are.' Excuse me, but featherweight (whatever that means) digital phones have been out there for quite a few years already....

All in all, an extremely disappointing book, full of errors and light on real value. If you're looking for a book like this, I'd recommend either the currently out of print 'Airline Passenger's Guerrilla Handbook' by George Brown or 'Fly cheap!' by Kelly Monaghan.

A Must Read for Women Travelers.......2000-08-26

If you are a woman traveling alone, do not leave home without the tips Collis offers along with all the other DOS and DONTS. You'll be shocked at all the do's you don't do, and all the don'ts you do. Learn where and what not to eat for happy travel. Look at hotels other women have chosen and get tips for safety, security and peace. Really.

Good Book.......2007-09-22

This is a good book to help those who are moving to North Carolina set up their business. It didn't give me a whole lot of new information because I am very familiar with starting and running a business.

Subtitled Millennium Edition, this 14th annual update is again authored by Kevin Zraly, founder and teacher of the Wine School, begun in 1976 as an offshoot of New York's Windows on the World restaurant. On 200 colorful and clutter-free pages full of maps, wine labels, and sidebars full of facts and anecdotes, Zraly acts as your Sherpa through eight classes. Chapters 1 through 3 circumnavigate the white wines of France, the New World, and Germany; 4 through 8 explore the reds of France, California, Iberia, Australia, and South America, concluding with a section on champagne, port, and sherry.

As wine guru, Kevin Zraly is opinionated, knowledgeable, and patient. His skill at talking novice wine devotees off the ledge is especially evident in the chapters on Burgundy and Germany, with their notoriously confusing wine labels. Study Zraly's careful parsing and annotation of a German label and you'll be able to tell the region from the town from the vineyard the next time someone hands you a Mosel-Saar-Ruwer Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Spätlese.

But any book that calls itself a "Complete Wine Course" sets the Barbera pretty high--sometimes too high. Oregon and Washington States share one page while New York State rates two and a half. Certainly a millennium edition could scare up another paragraph for the red-hot Pacific Northwest. And two chapters following the classes--"Creating an Exemplary Restaurant Wine List" and "Award-Winning Wine Lists"--seem little more than padding.

But these are small quibbles about a handsome and approachable volume that will take you from Amarone to Zind-Humbrecht with confidence. Whether you're a true cork dork or someone who doesn't know their Alsace from their elbow, you could certainly do worse than pressing your nose up against these windows on the world. --Tony Mason

Well-written beginner's primer.......2002-11-20

If you are just starting out in the wine world, let Kevin Zraly tag along via "The Windows on the World Wine Course" and you won't go wrong. His light approach and expert analysis of all aspects of the wine world are a reassuring voice amid the din of conflicting advice out there in the wine racks.

Zraly, well-known for his superior knowledge in matching wine with food, keeps his book informative, but not overwhelming. The book is written in a breezy and easily read format, with plenty of white space on each page to keep the text, sidebars, margin info, and graphics from overwhelming the reader. And for those who like to know interesting facts about wine, each page has tidbits written in the margins that when dropped correctly during your next wine tasting will bring out the "Oohs" and "Aahs" in the guests.

The only negative to the book is that it can't have it all ways. It is clearly a beginner to intermediate book, and while it is derived from the class in wine that Zraly actually teaches around the country, it lacks the ability to serve as a comprehensive reference. For this reason, I would team this book with Karen MacNeil's "The Wine Bible" - a very comprehensive, yet still easy to understand resource.

Great Book for Wine Novice.......2002-06-05

This book is essential for a budding wine connoisseur. It keeps things simple and introduces you to the wine regions of the world, grape varieties etc.

It Is What It Is.......2002-04-29

This is one of the best introductory wine books on the market. I give it to anyone that I know that is interested in learning more about wine. I hope that they can use the information that they find here to graduate to Parker, or Clarke.

Very Eerie.......2001-12-09

It's strange to see this book title, especially with the 2002 date. The entire staff of the restaurant was wiped out on 9/11.

Wealth of Wine Info Compressed into Usable Book.......2001-11-21

What a magnificent wealth of data on wine in this nicely laid out book.

Beginning with the planting, care and harvest of grapes, Zraly takes one through a catechism on wine. This question and answer format is followable, and presents it in a sequence that makes sense and one can take to the dining experience or wine store to utilize what one learns.

Like the section of food and wine matches and wine and cheese. Further, the "Wine Buying Strategies for Your Wine Cellar" is highly commendable and reliable.

This is great motivator to keep exploring this fascinating and always fluid enjoyment. The updated editions permit new tastings to grace the latest in the wine world.

A bit too specialized for general office purposes........2007-06-15

From the title, I was expecting more of a "how to" think in bullets communicate accordingly. I tend to write this way already, and have a few staff members that I really wish would learn how to do so, as well. I was hoping for some guidelines to help them develop this communication style for email and presentations.

That information IS included, but the first half of the book focuses heavily on things like selecting bullet style (round, square filled, square outline, check mark, exclamation point), aligning the height of the bullet with the text and spacing the text from the bullet. There are several pages of side-by-side examples of bulleted lists, "this one is correct; this one is not correct". Several have to be studied pretty closely to understand why one is more aesthetic than the others.

I can respect the high art of use of white space and other arcana of the printer's discipline but: not exactly what my staff needed. This book would probably be very good for a marketing intern or assistant, who could help lay out content for web pages or printed materials.

An amazing book!.......2003-05-19

My grandfather wrote this book and would have to say that it is an extremely original book. Not many people know about the history of Greece during the 20th century or about the people that lived through the wars faced by Greece. Everything is described with amazing detail. It is definatly worth your time!

Folks, THIS is what it's like to be an Aspie.......2007-04-11

When I came to realize last summer that I might just have Asperger Syndrome, I was elated. I finally at least had an idea of why I was so ... peculiar. I also wanted Answers, so I embarked upon a quest to learn more about this mysterious syndrome. I've read some good books on the subject over the past several months but the only one to really capture the escence of what it actually _feels_ like to be an Aspie is Hadcroft's. If you have a loved one with Aspergers, or if you are an Aspie yourself, read this book. Hadcroft's experiences as an adolescent were painfully familiar, as were his woe's in the adult world. Then there are the fantasy worlds he retreated into. Man, I know all about those. True, we differ in many specifics, especially religion. (He's a Jehovah's Witness, I'm a staunch athiest). Big picture wise, though, we are much the same. Thanks to his Aspergers, Hadcroft has a unique outlook on life, as do I. He's had his struggles but now he seems to be finding his way in life. That gives me confort as I try to do the same for myself. This book is a window - a window into the minds of folks like Will Hadcroft, myself, and millions of Aspies the world over.
