Invaluable Reference Guide for Human Resources Personnel.......2005-07-30
Human Resource managers and specialists have a lot of legal material to learn. They have to keep up with the latest changes in the laws that affect the way they handle employees and the way they administer benefits. This guide, updated each year since its initial release, is designed to help human resource personnel find the answers to legal questions.
The most striking feature of this guide is its length. It is more than 1,100 pages long and contains 43 chapters. It needs to be this way, of course, to encompass all of the different laws pertaining to human resource management. It covers most everything about HR one can imagine, from rules and regulations regarding hiring and terminating to laws covering sexual harassment and pension administration.
Even though this book is a very good resource, there are still a few things you will not be able to find. The primary function of this reference guide is to provide an overview of the federal laws. Thus, many of the laws unique to the individual states are not discussed here. There are a few exceptions, but there are many state- specific questions this guide will not be able to answer. This is what happened to me one day when I consulted this book for an answer regarding workmen's compensation. It didn't have what I needed to know about my state, so I had to look elsewhere. Still, it pointed me in the right direction so it did have its use.
The organization of this book is ok, but some things about it are a little cumbersome. The table of contents, for example, doesn't include page numbers. Instead, it references the various pages based on the chapter number and the subsection (for example, "23.02" means turn to chapter 23, and then look for the second section). I think it would be better if it showed the page number.
There are plenty of references in this guide to specific court cases, pointing out new decisions and how they were decided. Human Resource laws change all the time, which is why a book like this becomes outdated quickly. Fortunately, the author of this handy guide updates it every year with a new release. It's a large, bulky book that may not be organized in the most efficient way, but is still invaluable as reference guide for HR personnel.
Rabbi Trust.......2003-07-10
Your a teacher and don't know what a Rabbi Trust is? Shame on you. Look it up and learn it and stop thinking everyone is Anti-Semitic. As a Jewish man I take offense to your comment.
Shilling's Text is Jam Packed.......1998-09-16
I am using this book for a master's level personnel law course. It covers all the topics quite thoroughly. It might be useful as a quick selective reference tool for HR administrators unfamiliar with one or more of the specialty areas. Some chapters (such as the one on benefits and the one on pensions) might benefit from another look at organization of the material. However, most of the information is accurate, if necessarily streamlined in many areas. Since personnel law now covers several deeply specialized areas, this is not surprising.
Stylistically, the book's sentences are jam-packed with information. This might prove difficult reading for some. In a few cases, a series of issues will be "hidden" by a single sentence that is oversimplified, but this is apparent only to a reader who is familiar with the field. The advantage is that the author has made a very creditable attempt to address all the issues. The author generally avoids drawing temporal or one-sided conclusions, which may mislead in a field that is fraught with disputes. I appreciate the even-handedness of this approach.
One small but annoying detail. On page 220 is a reference to a "rabbi trust". I took offense at the use of this term in the book, without quotation marks. I think later editions should avoid or explain the use of language which is apparently bigoted. In fact, I will recommend that my students not use this term because I can offer no good explanation for its continuance.

A must own book for vegetarians and gourmands alike.......2005-11-26
I have had to buy this book three times - it gets worn out quickly because out of all the cookbooks I own (and I do have a lot), this one gets the MOST use. There is a marvelous variety of recipes - everything from pastas, soups and salads to ethnic fare such as Mexican and Japanese.
I especially like the soup recipes - often you'll find a pot boiling in my house. And usually, the recipe will come from Tao of Cooking. The Cuban Black Bean Soup is divine! You'll also enjoy the Split Pea, Lentil, Czechoslovakian Mushroom and the Barley Mushroom Soups as well.
I feel that the Tao of Cooking exposes even an experienced cook to a variety of interesting food. This book taught me how to make gnocchi, chocolate babka and ratatouille as well as other yummy things. I often feel that this book never got the attention that it deserved - it seems as if other vegetarian books got a lot more praise. Which is a tragedy, since this is the only vegetarian book that I feel is not only without gimmicks but is truly full of life. Not redundant at all like some of the others out there.
Absolutely the best.......2003-09-15
Other than Crescent Dragonwagon's work, this is undoubtedly among the best vegetarian cookbooks ever produced, and a must-have.
As a kid, I was fortunate enough to be able to eat at the Tao and occasionally get my hands on a piece of cake from Rudi's... Fortunately, they live on in any kitchen with this cookbook and an even moderately competent cook. :-)
Wonderful, overlooked classic.......2002-10-04
This fabulous vegetarian cookbook has, unfortunately, been overshadowed by better known ones coming out of Moosewood, Greens, etc., but anyone who loves food, vegetarian or not, will probably adore this book. It's absolutely terrific. Unlike a lot a vegetarian recipes, these are very finely tuned, even subtle. They aren't the easiest meals to put together, but the work is well worth it. The recipes are constructed with a wonderful eye to fresh ingredients complexly combined, and it covers everything from breakfast to desserts. The cornmeal pancakes remain the best I've ever had; salads are excellent; and the soups just as good. I really love this book and would never be without it.
I love this cookbook.......1999-03-23
This is a wonderful vegetarian cookbook. The recipes are pretty simple and easy to follow, but absolutely delicious and mostly call for fairly ordinary ingredients. The recipes are also reasonable -- you don't need to devote a whole day to cooking a tasty meal without meat. I have had and loved this book for about 10 years now, and it's so splattered and worn that I've decided I need a new copy. This is one of my favorite cookbooks ever.
Book Description
Bond covenants-designed to control conflicts of interest between shareholders and bondholders-are important because lack of adequate protection can erode bondholder value. This monograph investigates whether existing covenants are adequate or whether they have lost value as a result of factors that assumed prominence during the leveraged-buyout era.

For the novice only.......2001-03-25
I obtained this book free as part of a tax software promotion, and it is certainly worth every penny I paid. Kidding aside, it would make a fine supplemental text for a high school economics class - the tone is light and conversational, the advice is sound (if elementary), and all essential ideas are clearly explained. However, adults with a real interest in their financial futures probably already know this stuff and would be better served by a more detailed book.

Book Description
In this book Nobel Laureate Joseph Stiglitz and co-author Raaj Sah address one of development's major issues. During the early phases of economic development, there are often serious conflicts between the interests of town and country. The Corn Law Debate in England, the economic conflicts between the North and the South prior to the US Civil War, and the Soviet Industrialization Debate are among the historical examples. Most of today's countries face town versus country tensions of increasing severity, including such issues as who should pay how much in taxes, who should get how much in subsidies, and what forms the taxes and subsidies should take. This volume analyses these tensions and issues, taking into account the great diversity of institutions and economic environments observed in different developing countries. While dealing primarily with today's developing countries, the book also sheds some new light on some of the historical controversies. Each chapter contains a non-technical statement of the problems at hand and a summary of the analysis. The book will be of interest to public finance economists, and practitioners and researchers of economic development, as well as to economic historians.
Customer Reviews:
original.......2004-04-29
The poorest of the poor in South Asia are the peasants. They are landless and powerless. There are over 400 millions of them. The machinery of the state is mostly designed to squeeze them for the benefit of the powerful who are, of course, in the cities.
Sah and Stiglitz have written on these matters with remarkable originality. They analyze the long history of such conflicts: the Poor-Law debate in Briton, the pre-Civil War era in the United States, the pre-collectivization Soviet Union, and so on. They capture the main motifs of the conflicts in today's Third World. Their book makes it possible to comprehend various kinds of institutional and policy biases that distort the town and country relationships.
This book is written in the language of professional economists. I hope that these or some other authors will write a book on these topics for broader audiences.

Book Description
Puts to rest the unfounded allegations surrounding Jefferson and Sally Hemings.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent historical rebuttal.......2006-07-28
I was a history major in college and believe that Virginus Dabney makes excellent use of both primary and secondary sources, unlike Brodie who merely speculates about Jefferson's love life without providing any facts. Dabney's book is written like a history thesis with a little bit of humor between the lines. Brodie's book reads like a novel and should be in the fiction section, not with the biographies.
I take offense to one of the comments below assuming that white readers who accept the occurance of the Maria Cosway affair, while "denying" the Hemmings affair are racist... this is simply ridiculous. History is not about what we think should have happened. It's about what did happen based on the available evidence. If the evidence says that Thomas Jefferson had an affair with a slave, fine, but my hunch is that Jefferson did not father Sally Hemmings' children and that his nephew was the father. However, my opinion is based on the evidence that is currently available and does not make me a racist.
As Dabney points out, the fact that prominent historians such as Gary Wills in addition to the three leading Jeffersonian experts in the world also doubt the historical integrity of Brodie's book adds credibility to Dabney's thesis statement. Brodie was not qualified to write such a "comprehensive" analysis of Jefferson's life. Her background was not in history, so what is she doing pretending to be an historian?
Interesting........2003-10-12
Note to the last reviewer concerning her note to the previous reviewer. This book was revised to include the DNA evidence, and if looked at closely, the DNA evidence reveals a common male ancestor, which might have been Thomas Jefferson, but might also have been his nephew as Dabney and others have argued all along.
I believe it was Thomas Jefferson myself, and we may yet prove it, but to say that the DNA tests proved this is fallacy.
"The Jefferson Scandals" Revisited.......2001-10-19
Note to a previous reviewer: Virginius Dabney was a man. He was a longtime Virginia newspaper editor and died shortly after "The Jefferson Scandals" was published. He was unquestionably a sincere gentleman and passionate in his defense of Jefferson's honor and purity. He didn't live to see the definitive DNA evidence that confirms the Sally Hemings relationship. The consistent denials of the affair by Jefferson apologists, in my opinion, involve more than a tinge of racism. These same scholars have no problem affirming Jefferson's liaison with Maria Cosway, who was probably much less virtuous than Sally Hemings. It is entertaining, however, to read Dabney's book with Fawn Brodie's back-to-back. We eagerly await an up-to-date Jefferson biography that fully explores the new evidence.
An Interesting Rebutal to Brodie.......2000-02-14
The Jefferson/Sally Hemmings story has recently been accepted as fact. Before you accept Fawn Brodie's account (which re-fueld this 200 year old speculation) or the TV movie which recently told a highly inaccurate version, please read Dabney's smart little book. Dabney takes on Brodie point by point. I don't claim to know the truth of what, if anything, went on between Jefferson and Sally... But frankly, nobody else knows either. All these accounts are speculative at best. I am not a fan of Thomas Jefferson. Still, it seems wrong to trash him with a scandal two hundred years old that can't be proven one way or the other, inspite of DNA testing.
all in all a good read.......1999-11-18
This book was mostly an okay one except that she was a bit repetitous and extremely harsh on Fawn Brodie's book Thomas Jefferson:an Intimate History. I have not read Brodie's book but from how Dabney puts it, it is rubbish, lacking in evidence, untruthful, and just plain nonsense. You almost got the sense that she didn't really like Brodie for more than just her book. Some of Dabney's sarcastic comments are quite funny, if not a bit harsh at times. But it is an intersting book if you like history and Thomas Jefferson.
Book Description
This beautiful four-color book opens the eyes of women to see themselves the way God sees them. Many don't even know that they are daughters of the King - chosen to be His Princess. Somewhere between childhood and adulthood, they trade in their fairy-tale dreams of being cherished for a tarnished identity fashioned by their own insecurities and the mixed-up messages of the media. Now, these tenderly adoring letters written from God's persepective demonstrate that every woman is beautiful just the way she is. Walking in confidence toward her God-given purpose, every woman can bless others - even future generations.

Something everyone needs!.......2007-01-25
I enjoyed the passages from this book in my bible study class and I am so pleased now to own my own copy for enjoyment everyday. Very Beautifully written.
His Princess.......2007-01-12
This book is so touching. A friend gave me a copy and I loved it so much I ordered 7 more to give as Christmas gifts. I've read one or two letters every night before going to sleep. These letters are written as if God is writing to each woman personally, father to daughter. Each letter is based on a Bible verse that is included. The letters are so loving and personal. I will read this book over and over.
Pass it on!!.......2006-10-21
Within these pages you will truly find words of love and encouragement from your God and King. God sees us with such loving and forgiving eyes and He desires for us to see ourselves through His eyes. May each Princess find herself through this wonderful little book.
My good friend and mentor gave this book to me and it has been a great encouragement. I have since given this book as a gift to friends. It is a book you will not want to keep to yourself - Pass it on!
Awesome...definitely a blessing.......2006-07-17
This book has been a huge encouragement to me in times of trials. I would definitely recommend it. It would also be a great gift.
I Shared This Book before reading it.......2006-05-22
I read a few of the letters and then shared it with my aunt, who loved it. I so recommend this to every woman - I have hundreds and hundreds of books, and I think this is one I will buy for all my friends. There is only one "drawback" - it is so beautiful, so lovely that I don't want to underline or highlight the book. This makes a gorgeous gift!

Customer Reviews:
A WONDERFUL, "must-have" book for young girls!.......2007-07-23
Rarely do I ever just go on and on about a book as I read tons and our family/kids love to read as well, but this is the most precious book for young girls and their relationship to God you will EVER find. It is a WONDERFUL, WONDERFULLY touching book that is full of truth and may have you in tears as the love of God for your daughter just pours out of each page.
Each page is set up with God's letter from Him to her on the left side along with a verse, and her prayer in response on the right. There are quite a few pages and it is bound well and beautifully printed.
Perfect for reading at night to your child rather than just giving to them to read on their own, it's one-page 'chapters' are perfect for bedtime, or before prayers, or as a mother or dad devotional time with your child. My daughter actually asked me to read it with her at bedtime - Me reading the God portions and her the prayers in response.
You might worry that this is just another "Prncess-marketing gimmick book" to make money ala Disney, but that couldn't be farther from the truth! This is the meat of God's word and His desire to know your little girl...It will cause her to read the Bible and want to know God better. I too, worried a bit that it would follow that same, self-centered, "You are my princess" theme that we are always fighting against, but soon realised that this book offers many of it's own correctives to this kind of thinking. Good of the author to realise this and address it early on!
We are so looking forward to the boys version, "God's Mighty Warrior" that should be coming out soon by the same author. If you have boys it will probably be as good as this one! Buy it, read it, give tons of them away. It is easily the best $$ I have spent on a book in a long time.
His Mighty Warrior: A Treasure Map from Your King
Thank you Sheri for a wonderful book!!!
A Treasure!.......2007-05-09
An invaluable tool to teach a girl to love the Word of God. Each section is a letter from God (the King) to his daughter (the princess). Each is based on a scripture that teaches about Godly character and ends with a prayer. I've found it a wonderful way to teach my daughter to understand God's Word and treasure it as well. A must-read for every true princess!
EXCELLENT!!!!.......2007-03-08
What a great book! Tell your little girl that she is God's little princess. NOT A PRETEND PRINCESS! We are all God's princesses! My twin girls love it, they are 6 years old. It's almost like a bible study for little girls. A++++
His Little Princess.......2007-01-21
I would highly recommend this book for young girls. Very encouraging and uplifting.

Not essential.......2003-08-22
Black Sparrow is digging deep into the heap of leftovers to come up with some "new" Bukowski. This is the worst after-he-died book to be released. Almost all of the letters are by Bukowski. That's a relief because Sheri Martinelli's letters are unreadable. The spelling, punctuation, and stream of consciousness writing style make her letters impenetrable.
Bukowski's letters are readable, but he's too young here to have much to say. Frankly, Bukowski's early work is pretty weak. It wasn't until the late 1970s that he became the great writer we know and love. Here, he picks up on Martinelli's racism, runs with it halfheartedly, and praises her for no reason. The letters are very drunk and usually pointless. Some of the angry wisdom shines through, but not much. This is a book for diehard Bukowski fans only. It's a bad representation of his work.
Slow going, but worth it for Bukowski fans.......2001-06-19
You can't critique a collection of someone's letters on the same basis you would their published public works. But in this volume, the first thing you might wonder is why two articulate people chose to affect such an inarticulate, though sometimes inventive, style. All collections of Bukowski letters contain many cryptic and rambling missives of this sort, and I suppose they may be excused as the unedited utterings of a drunk and/or hung-over mind. But I'm led to believe that Bukowski produced a lot of work in that condition, including his better-crafted stories; so why must the letters be so sloppy? Even as first drafts, they're a bit much. And why Ms. Martinelli chose to emulate this style is another question, unless of course she was similarly indisposed. Maybe it was an accepted literary style in the '60s. At any rate, it makes the book a slow slog, although some new insights into Bukowski's nature and ideas may be winnowed with diligent application. Like many of the Bukowski-related volumes, this one seems to be more for the fan and collector than for the casual reader. There are a few photos of the two authors in the center of the book. Black Sparrow Press did its usual commendable job of design and production.
Interesting, but Hard to Read........2001-04-27
BEERSPIT NIGHT is an interesting entry into the volumes of Bukowski letters published by Black Sparrow. This is a venture between two people who were involved with Bukowski and Martinelli professionally and personally: John Martin, publisher of BSP, and Steven Moore, the editor of this book, respectively. The correspondence is lively, Bukowski seems to have met his match, and enlightening. Bukowski, as Moore states, reveals more of his artistic and literary leanings with Martinelli than he did with anyone else he exchanged missives with (Martin and Bukowski's widow may be the only other people to have seen this side of him). The book appears to have been a labor-of-love for Moore, who knew Martinelli, and Martin shows his usual loving care with this book as he has with every other Buk book. The only problem I have encountered so far (at only 1/4 of the way through) is Moore's decision to leave much of the original purposeful misspellings and colloquialisms of both Bukowski and Martinelli. It becomes quite tiresome, like spending hours trying to solve word problems. And, for some reason the footnotes are not numbered, so many a reader may actually pass them over not realizing they're there. Those who think they know everything about Bukowski might discover some revelations in these letters.

Book Description
"Your baby has infantile myoclonic seizures," the doctor said. "She will never walk or talk. Her life expectancy is about five years. She is so severly retarded that she will never be able to give of receive love. My recommendation to you is that you place her in an institution and forget that she ever existed." With these words, time skipped a beat for this young family. When it began beating again, nothing was ever the same. It was as though their precious little baby died, and they were left with only an empty shell of the child she might have been, could have been, should have been. Letters to Sheri is the personal account of one mother's journey through the grieving process associated with the loss of the child she dreamed of having to acceptance and celebration of the person her daughter is. In Letters to Sheri, Billye Giesecke gives an intimate glimpse into the process of healing and recovery over not only this great grief in her life, but healing and recovery over traumas she experienced as a child growing up and their destructive power on her life as an adult.
