If corporate governance works effectively, size and stability of the firm's officer/director group will be sensitive to firm performance. This should be most evident during periods of unusual firm performance and so we focus on a sample of 9817 firms drawn from 52 countries with 2001 performance measures and officer/director effects in the following 12-month period. Cross-sectional analysis indicates a positive relationship between prior period performance and changes in size and stability of the officer/director group. While the change in size relationship appears to be explained by the USA firms in the sample, the stability relationship is more broadly based. We also find that these results are sensitive to legal system with a firm's officer/director group showing greater sensitivity to past performance in common law countries.

I love both cookies and Mary Engelbreit. This cookbook seemed like a perfect combination to me! The beautiful illustrations and the numerous pictures of the cookies, along with the great recipes make this cookbook for any cookie baker.

Some of my family's favorites include: Glazed Oatmeal Raisin Drops, Turtle Brownies, Golden Coconut Lemon Bars, Chocolate Hazelnut Cookies, Brandy Snaps, Black and Whites, Cranberry-Pistachio Biscotti, and Chocolate Crackles.

This fun, lovely book would make a great gift. Enjoy!

THE cookie cookbook for a family!.......2004-01-10

I bought this cookbook for the section on children's cookies. However, there are just as many cookie recipes for adults and everyone inbetween. Great variety in the recipes, and nice pictures to go with each.

This book is full of delicious recipes, and there are some ones I've never heard of. It also contains some classics, and recipes I thought I'd never find from cookies I enjoyed in my childhood. Recipes for holidays, and throughout the year.

I love the children's section, and so do my kids. It has the twisted candy cane cookies, mice shaped cookies, and many more.

Great addition to your cookbook library, especially if you love baking or Mary Engelbreit.

even though it looks small, this book has got more great recipes for cookies than any other you've come across. i make tons of cookies, and this book is by far and away my favorite. of course the drawings are cute (and make it a great gift!), but the recipes are the best part. i've made at least half of them and they're super easy and super yummy. great holiday and kids sections too. our favorites are the ginger krinkles, turtle brownies and cranberry pistachio biscotti - all of which come out looking elegant and are sure to wow your guests and friends - but in reality are very easy to make. enjoy!

A great book..........2001-09-26

I purchased this book as a gift for my wife, who enjoys making decorative cookies for friends and family. She loves it, and bakes cookies from it regularly. What more, there are a variety of cookies in the book, not 12 different versions of sugar cookies, so it will take a while to make and enjoy all of the different kinds of cookies. This book won't disappoint.

Woodenly Conventional.......2000-08-19

When I first read this book, I thought it was a reasonableoverview of the ethical problems facing us in the world of biotechnology. However, on second thought (always a good idea to think twice!), the book represents EXACTLY what we expect to hear with regard to the topic. Little to no original material is presented, and there is no effort made to evaluate or even examine alternative points of view in the realm of ethics. Unsurprisingly, the tired and overused metaphor of the slippery slope - long the faithful friend of ethical doomsayers everywhere - rears its ugly head again here. The authors also take the attitude that they are explaining "common knowledge" just for the sake of getting it on paper, and seem immune to the idea that someone might do something so horribly vile as to - gasp! - support cloning.

The conclusions are painfully predictable: genetically modified foods might be dangerous to wild stocks, there is a moral gulf between somatic and germ-line gene therapy, cloning of humans is utterly immoral. Fewer knee-jerk emotional reactions and more critical thought on these topics - especially cloning - would be deeply appreciated by everyone. Many people are sick of hearing only one side of the issue presented as if the case is already closed. And the "Genethic Principle" paragraphs beginning each section make the book sound like a textbook, reinforcing the reader's conception that he is being instructed in something everyone already knows.

IMHO, the "dangers" of these biotechnologies are significant and should be appreciated, but have been vastly inflated by sensationalist media, public paranoia, and a few ill-advised experiments. Cloning especially is the victim of sensationalization (if indeed that is a word), and the maxim "Never clone humans!" is widely taken as basically gospel. In fact, there is little scientific evidence that cloning would present much of the famed danger, and it certainly isn't the threat to individuality people like to claim it is (what about environmental differences? what about identical twins?) And no, cloning couldn't be used to make a slavishly obedient army of mini-Hitlers bent on world domination, either. Try Gregory Pence's "Who's Afraid of Human Cloning?" or any Richard Dawkins article on the subject....

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was created by the man whose life is recounted in this book. His sons still rule it nearly a century after the day in mid-January 1902, when triumphant in a bloody battle against odds, Abdul Aziz ibn Abdur Rahman ibn Faisal as Saud, just twenty-five years old, stood on the battlements of the capital city, Riyadh, and proclaimed to all, `Your own amir is with you again!'

For the next thirty years, Ibn Saud's superior intelligence, strong body, great courage, deep comprehension of the strengths and weaknesses of his people, and indisputable charisma were all used in full measure to regain most of his ancestors' holdings and to unite them into a kingdom, formally declared so on 27 September 1932.

The ebbs and flows of the struggle to reach that goal are a saga of ingenious ploys that together with acts of force freed him from the threat of three strong adversaries and a large number of weaker ones. At the end, through the shrewd use of religious fervor, Ibn Saud had an army of unprecedented valor and strength of purpose. In 1929-30 a part of that army turned against him and was dispersed only after a period of uncertainty, but stability had been achieved when on 9 May 1933 a contract obtained by the Standard Oil Company of California granted rights to explore for and develop the resources of oil in the eastern half of the nation.

The revenues from oil after the first valid discovery in mid-1938 were, during the king's lifetime, used mainly to satisfy his wants and those of his family, for Ibn Saud made all decisions. More often than not the exchequer was empty but the government functioned.

The final section of the book discusses Ibn Saud himself: his aspect, his qualities of mind, mannerisms, and interests. He was a man of his time with a greater-than-average sex drive. He had 48 legitimate sons, 22 declared wives, and later in life, several concubines. Some marriages were made only to firm up alliances, but all were consummated.

A Timely Biography.......2001-11-08

In 1939, a young American paleontologist, Nestor Sander, met and shook hands with one of the most remarkable, and perhaps least acknowledged, national leaders of the twentieth century, Abdul Aziz ibn Abdur Rahman as Saud, the king of Saudi Arabia. For the next fifty years, as Mr. Sander pursued a distinguished career in petroleum paleontology, he remained so impressed by that encounter that he immersed himself in the history of the Desert King. He studied the nine biographies of Ibn Saud in English as well as the two other accounts in French and was struck by certain inconsistencies among them. This result is this fine book, Ibn Saud: King by Conquest.

Divided into three parts, the author blends the precision of scientific survey and analysis with the delightful humanism of a wise, well-traveled man of letters. The first section is a stirring account of the King's rise to power concluding with the Yemen War in 1934. The second section, The Saudi State, begins with the Standard Oil of California concession in 1933 and goes on to detail the impact that oil wealth made on the nation in Ibn Saud's lifetime. In the third part, The Man, Nestor Sander writes a qualitative and honest appreciation of King Abdul Aziz that is both disciplined and personal.

Lavished with archival portraits of many of the main characters of the period, a generous addendum of biographies that range from Captain Shakespear to Mubarak ibn Subah as Subah, the founder of modern Kuwait, and perhaps the most comprehensive set of maps that any reader could ever desire, including a 15 by 18 inch color map inset into the end paper, this book is essential reading for anyone interested in the King and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia - then or now.

The author is a well known newspaper man in Minnesota. The book describes his problems with alcholism and his search for his spirituality. It is well written and very interesting, especially if you are also searching for meanings in life.
