What makes this book easy and fun to read are the many stories that John Miller uses to illustrate his points.
As a company trainer, I have incorporated the QBQ! message into our Leadership training classes. It was a great addition to our training material and has been instrumental in achieving positive changes with many of our management staff. We also gave copies of the book to each of the 150 managers in our region.
Other positive changes have happened in my personal life from reading this book. I am much more proactive in getting things done and less apt to blame. In addition, my teenage son, after having read the book (with some initial prompting), seems to help out around the house with less complaining! That alone makes it worth the price of the book!
In short- this is a must-have book for any self-help library, professional or personal.

The QBQ is a relevant book for todays professionals.I have been a healthcare professional clinician and manager for over 20 years. I have led many different teams throughout those years mostly in the emergency department. How I wish the QBQ had been written when I first started. John G. Miller has hit the heart of many organizations by capturing his understanding that organizations are made of people and those people hold the organizations success in thier hands. He then encourages the readers by not dismissing the hard issues they face today, but, to instead, learn to embrace new ways of thinking that will propel them to greater success than they knew before. His practical insights have become a tool I use with all my managment teams to challenge our ways of thinking and I also use it as a tool as well as when consulting with other organziations.
One of my employees made the statement "John makes the book fun to read and hard to put down".
I have had experiances where every department seemed to fall back into a "silo" as mentioned in chapter 15 or "protective cocoon" when hard times pressed in upon us. It was one thing to fight the regulatory requirements and competitors but to be fighting each other at the same time was just exhausting. We had become what he describes as the "victim" in chapter 5. The QBQ was the "instrument of choice" to assist us in breaking down those silos by learning to ask the correct questions and confront the negatives we were allowing ourselves to feel and placing us back in charge of our destiny. My management teams love the QBQ and share it with new employees as well. I have given this book a 5 because it truly helps people and organizations move forward.

Great little book.......2005-07-12

I found this book at a flea market, took it home and made really tasty, easy meals and side dishes. I sever number #201 "Spaghetti With Tomatoes, Bacon, and Onions" to guests,(I added Red Pepper flacks, roasted red peppers and portabella mushrooms because I like them) and got rave reviews.
#236 " Tricolor Bell Pepper Sauce with Imported Black Olives and Anchovies" was wonderful.
I have NOT put on a pound. I watch the amount of pasta I eat and feel up on all the goodies.
I have gone to Amazon and bought this book for friends and family.

A true mixed bag of good, great and no way...........2003-08-01

I have had this book for years. Its publication date is 1988. I have had it at least 10 years, long before a low carb life style was thought to be a good thing. When I was going through all my cook books the other day I came accross this book of generally very easy and some surprizingly elegant pasta recipes some that can be made quickly for company.

First the good:

With a fair number of these recipes you can produce a hearty comfort-type entree with with mostly pantry type ingredients. Who would have thought that spaghetti with parsley butter (spaghetti, butter, garlic, parsley) can make a satisfying and elegant entree? Well I didnt. But it does. And it makes and even better first course, lunch or side dish. The same goes for Spaghetti with walnuts and parmesan (spaghetti, olive oil, garlic, walnuts, parmesan, parlsey...and add blue cheese to this one if you like). throughout this book are simple put-toghether dishes like this that you can add to your usual stable of week night dinners for variety. Other examples of these simple recipes are spaghetti with lemon butter and peas, elbows with butter, parmesan and peas, and fetticcini with tuna and peas.

On the more exotic side are a rabbit sauce for your pasta, a cavier and pasta concoction and a section an asian noodles. Quite a few of all of the dishes are on the rich (read calorie laden) side... One chapter with no cook sauces is a bit lighter. The dessert section is very sweet and very rich.
I think a lot of these recipes could be *lightened up* with alternate products... fat free half and half instead of cream, fat free milk instead of milk, egg substitute instead of eggs..low fat cheeses, etc.

On the plus side..there are many many recipes to choose from, many with things you already have at home. On the minus side, without reworking some of these...its a cholestol nightmare (no, not all of them...but a good number) It fairly easy to read. A nice font, easy directions. Suggestions to change the basic recipes... Alternate ingredient choices. very nice. Thankfully no screaming elbow macaroni cartoons running from smiling pots of boiling water.

A minus here I need to note...having had the book for so long...Its not exactly a spiral, more like a loose leaf that holds punched pages...but some of the holes have ripped like they would in your school binder. Or they just dont stay where they should any more. Essentially i have one ring holding in all the pages now. Not a good thing for all the pages. In a few years, I think I will just have pages and that will be just a big mess.

Times have changed and tastes have changed. There is an appreciation for a lighter style of cooking. Its hard to say if I would buy this when the last ring goes and pasta recipes fall all over my kitchen. I can't say that this hasnt been helpful, because any cookbook that helps me make a dinner out of what i already have, is a help. I think I will only know what I will do when the time comes because this truly was a mixed bag.

I can see this being a good book for someone who does alot of pantry cooking. Someone just starting out because the recipes are very simple (well alot of them) and most take a minimum of ingredients and prep. Or someone interested in a good volume of only pasta dishes.

A Recipe for Everyone.......2001-03-11

I picked up my copy in 1990 when I was in college and haven't stopped using it. As a college student my favorite dish was the fresh tomato, basil and ricotta sauce on ziti. Yum! When I was a nanny for a California family with California taste, recipes like the spaghetti with blue cheese and walnuts saved my fanny. And now that I'm married and cook for my extended family, one of my favorite potluck dishes is the "light and easy" Salad of Penne and Chicken with Spinach and Buttermilk Dressing. My family loves it too.

I love the spiral binding and hard cover that lay flat. The different chapters ("Asian Connection," "No-Cook Sauces") etc. make for good browsing. And I like that many additions are offered too.

Lots of times I pull out a variety of things from my fridge and cupboard and then go to this cookbook to figure out what to make. For example, if I had leftover spaghetti, some eggs, and a handful of veggies to chop up, I could bang out a delicious spaghetti frittata that I know my family would love.

This cookbook has been a staple in my kitchen for 11 years and has held up wonderfully!

This is an essential book for the home cook who's interested in more than spaghetti and meatballs. Harvey's recipes are easy to follow, and his introductions are a delight to read.

The book began with the author's recall of the suicide of his bond trader friend who lost about US$60K in one single Friday in 1982. Quite a sad story, but it did tell how serious the author was about trading and his sincerity of writing a good book that attempted to help traders and those aspiring ones. In my opinion, he did a very good job.

With fifty chapters of individual trading rules (one can refer to the sample page on Amazon.com), the author had discussed, with abundant real life samples, and without nonsense, most of the essential trading rules that I had read here and there in other trading books and had personally experienced, though not effectively put into practice. One might had already read a lot of trading books. I did. However, this one was so well written and organised that I would like to recommend it to anybody who wants to buy a book for easy reference to keep himself/herself well guarded against the ups and downs of trading life.

Written by a floor trade on the cbot, this book is simply a list of rules with brief 5 page explanations for each chapter. I found about most of the rules to be elementary to an intermediate trader. However, almost any trader regardless of experience can pick up a few tidbits in this book .. which is more than I can say for most trading books.

I give the book 3 stars for content, another star for being a very quick read, and another star for being cheap ...

Wisdom for Traders, Not "Trading for Dummies".......2002-05-28

This book is about the mindset and mental habits a trader needs to be successful in the markets. Every successful trading career has been a process of learning the "rules" in this book. If you can imagine a good friend with years of experience giving you advice on how to improve your trading; that is exactly how this book reads. This book IS NOT a "how to place a trade book." It IS an excellent book on what not to do once a trade has been placed. No book can replace the school of hard knocks every trader has to go through in order to succeed, but if you embrace the principles contained in this book and make them your own; you will save yourself a ton of money. You may even save yourself enough money to stay in the game.

For intermediate traders.......2000-11-29

The better I get at making money trading, (not investing), the more these good books show up. (When the student is ready, the teacher will appear). I have read dozens of books over the years like all of you,and most of them did nothing for me except help me part with my money. I would get discouraged and quit the game for a few weeks or a couple of months but love of the game kept bringing me back. And when I picked up books like this one, some years ago, it didn't interest me. Know why? I wasn't ready for it. The reason it interests me now is because through many losses and trial and error, I am finding my way through this trading game and I find myself doing most of the right things now and when I read a book like this one, it confirms it! When I was a novice and not doing the right things, this book didn't confirm it, hence, it didn't appeal to me. I guess what I'm saying is, if your not improving at the trading game, then perhaps you're not ready for this book. If you are, you will be pleased to see yourself on many of the pages, but better yet, the confirmation you'll get from the book will increase your confidence and you just have to make more money. Maybe if you're not doing well and read this book, it will help you, too. All I know is when I was losing every day, I kept reading all the hype in the day trading books, losing money and this book didn't appeal to me. Now I have patience and discipline and sleep better and make money. This book has helped me make more as a position/swing trader of stocks only. Just keep in mind the 4 cardinal rules of trading: 1. Trade the trend, 2. Cut your losses quickly, 3. Let your profits run to infinity, and 4. Manage your risk. And when you learn that managing your risk partly involves losing money properly, then losing money won't bother you anymore. Read and reread this book and perhaps you too can trade the market for a living. And you know what? The markets are crashing and I'm still making money. I'm not sure if I would if I hadn't read the book.

I don't believe that the other review for this book is legitimate, which is why I am writing this one. I did not find this book very useful. The material is dated, and the "rules" are really just a collection of thoughts the author has had about the market -- nothing useful for the non-floor trader. I recommend checking this one out of the library before you buy.

More profitable insights and techniques.......1997-07-13

The original Trading Rules gave me a bible of rules to use when looking at markets. This one goes one step further by offering even more insight into market strategies employed by the market insiders. Eng's explanation of stock splits as a form of revisionist history shows how the big boys really use stock splits to rewrite their original costs ... and screw the public ... is an insightful chapter. Eng's use of arbitrage clearly explains how I can use it outside of the markets! Other chapters are just as valuable to making money. In fact, no other book has portrayed the game played against the public as this one book by Eng. Eng's twenty years of market experience certainly shows up here. This is for today what Reminiscences of a Stock Operator was to investors and traders of the 1920s

This is a must read for any scholar of Abraham Lincoln. It goes way beyond the usual historical perspective of his political finesse and acumen and delves into the deep spiritual and mystical inner nature of one of our most revered presidents. In May 1998, Tom Whittaker became the first amputee to summit Mt. Everest. The climb and his inspirational story, as well as his work on behalf of disabled people around the world, have earned him recognition as one of America's most courageous heroes.

Many hurdles confront all of us in our lives. This feat is a great read for those who appreciate outdoor adventure or for those who appreciate great achievement in the face of adversity. It is also a real good "growing up" story. Tom Whittaker was a bit of a rambunctious teenager. He is a weathered, maybe a bit feisty but gentle adult. One part of his achievement, a remarkable one, but not the key, is that he has had to adapt to a Syme's amputation in continuing to live the life he chooses.
