          But so are most books of this type. The book's best feature is a nice combination of detail with theory. There are lots of exercises and a generally cheery "you can do it!" tone. That's good, but the book's recurring emphasis on developing multi-modal approaches to problem-solving is better (i.e., creativity means trying approaches you're not as familiar with). Concluding sections on interacting with people of dominant types that differ from you, and how to sell your ideas to them, is probably worth the cover price alone.
          The author loves examples. These examples are not always correct (salons peaked in the 1700s, not the "seventeenth century" to cite one of more than a dozen examples), nor do they fit as neatly into their creative categories as the author supposes. In part, though, the reader comes to see this as the unique characteristics of a certain creative style--seeing this and making allowance for it is good practice for the rest of the book. After all, true creativity is aware of variant creative modes, especially in colleagues or even competitors.
          The morning after skimming the entire book I began to experiment with some of its suggestions. Within two hours I had come up with a metaphor that will solve one of the most intractable process problems for my company--an idea that literally took my breath away, on something I'd been struggling with for months. I put a lot of work in; this book didn't give me any answers. But in a sense it reminded me of the answer, or gave me ideas about how and where to look for the answer. I was a college football player already, to use a metaphor, and this was a long look at a pro playbook. It won't work unless you're playing college ball; if you're a top pro player, you should look at something more advanced. But if you want to develop a basis of creative talent, this'll help.

          This book starts off a quick précis of the 5 faces : Seer, Observer, Alchemist, Fool, Sage. Then it gives a self-assessment of which Styles you are currently using. I scored highest on Fool & Observer, and lowest on Sage.

          As I read through the book, I was disillusioned as to its worth. But when I got to Fool, I thought "that's me exactly" (there's no shame in being a 'Fool' in this schema).

          So I looked back at the earlier chapters, and thought maybe the questions & examples were not as appropriate as they might have been?

          Anyway, I began to appreciate the book more. Certainly the latter sections on how to apply the 5 different styles at work, and the strengths & weaknesses of teams who find themselves with & without all these players, were of more use than the theorising.

          There are other books offering rival schemas, but I think this one is as good as any of the others, and easier to read.

          In the business world, we are often stuck in a set way of creating solutions. This book teaches you look at that process. Through example, the author shows how visualizing success, pondering what is missing in an equation, adding two things together to make something better, stumbling accross something new and looking back to the past for solutions for the future can all lead to genius. This is a very rough account of how Annette Moser-Wellman spins a complicated web about real life wizards that have changed not only the business landscape but the way we view the world. She looks at the strategies men like Ray Kroc, Walt Disney and Alfred Nobel employed and the tools they used to achieve where no one else had acheived. It is also a guide for how to act and view the business world every day. I read it and started seeing my own creative process differently. Can you ask anything more from a book?

          Few times in my life have I picked up a book that was so insightful, so readable and so true that I have recommended it to almost everyone I have come into contact with. It has changed my whole outlook on understanding how to take my ideas and develop them simply by looking at them from a variety of facets and by asking the right questions.

          This book has also helped me cope with people I once perceived as difficult to get through to. I have since been able to 'read' my coworkers in such a way that every exchange ends positively, not at a cross-roads like before.

          5 out of 5 stars Breath of Fresh Air in a Very Tired Workplace.......2001-04-08

          This book will be helpful to every knowledge worker--the title should not scare off the 99% of the population that does not qualify for "genius" status.

          Certainly there will be those looking for some magical way to lift themselves from obscurity, or lethargy, or oppression, that that think they are unappreciated geniuses and are simply looking for the window-dressing they need to be recognized. This book is not for them.

          What this book does, in a very nice way that reminds one of Drucker's belief that the best work is work as a "calling"--work as a beloved endeavor that brings out the best we have to offer--or of the 7 Habits book that emphasizes the urgency of protecting those activities that are important but not urgent (things like family time, exercise, and freedom from the telephone--or now, email)--is "review the bidding" on five different workstyles, and how to make them better.

          In a nutshell, this book is what results when Myers-Briggs and 7 Habits have children, and the children grow up to be artists. It is a good read, and at a minimum it will help *anybody* bring more reflection and more peace back into their daily work routine.

          This book, The Five Faces of Genius, is destined to make a difference, and become a "profitable experience" for anyone who reads it. It stimulates the imagination, which leads to ideas and concepts, which guide us to policies and programs, which generate strategies and tactics, which result in new products and services. The next thing you know, you have profits.

          Listen to the writer, Robinson Davies (p.23) describing his inspirational moments: "An idea for a novel seizes me and will not let me go. What often appears in my head is a picture which somehow must be considered." Now, that happens to all of us. But, we need to learn how to act on those inspirational moments. This book teaches us how. Goethe's quote (p.193) is timely and has encouraged many of us to take action. It is at the heart of great leadership and magnificent results: "If you can imagine it, begin it. Boldness has genius, magic, and power in it." We should especially heed this advice during the current economic slump. It looks like the company, Agilent, did. The HP spinoff and maker of test and measurement equipment recently declared it would do something different to save money. It will cut the salaries of all 48,000 employees by 10% to avoid layoffs. This is an imaginative way to deal with economic hard times. It's also the "HP Way" - respect the individual. How to achieve this type of creative and positive response is all explained in the book. Finally, a third example that "exploded off the page" as I read the book are the Exercises found in each chapter. When you complete them you should submit them to your employer. They might become "the fuel that lights a fire" under your business.

          This stuff works! Just read about the companies and people who have improved their lot. The author has identified 204 specific examples of individuals and organizations to make her point as to "the Skills needed to Master Ideas at Work." Heck, that's probably more than the number you would learn about at a good, four year college. And, this 208 page book can be read in a few hours.

          In the Bible, Philippians 4:8, St. Paul urges us to think about "Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable - if anything is excellent or praiseworthy - think about such things." This book induces me to do just that. It seduces my senses. The author, Annette Moser-Wellman, knows what she is talking about. Can you define and dominate a market niche with your product or service? Read this book to find out how.

          The author has imagined, noticed detail, connected domains, celebrated weakness, and simplified throughout her life. With this book she has brought the reader into "the company of the creative." Take advantage of her counsel. Discover the "seer, observer, alchemist, and sage" that lies within you. If you don't at least glance through this book, you're "a fool."

          For "one shinning moment" then, be "a deer caught in the headlights of a passing car." Pause, in your life, read this book, and let the creative juices flow. Solve some problems in new, exciting, and imaginative ways. Then write the author, and thank her for encouraging you to be creative, improving the quality of your life, and increasing the productivity and profitability of your enterprise. Who knows, maybe someday you'll create a new "soft-chip technology" that eliminates cancer. This book is a wonderful, stimulating read. Enjoy it.

          Yes, we know we need a great team to compete successfully, but that's easier said than done! We need a way to determine the members' strengths and weaknesses as they apply to analyzing problems and formulating new ideas. The Five Faces of Genius provides a quick assessment of individual thinking types with full explanations of each(good aspects, as well as pitfalls in processing). Each member can learn about himself, the other team players, and what to do with this new information as it applies to the group. What I found most refreshing was the concept that while it is nice to understand one's own way of thinking and creating, it is quite possible, even necessary,to try to personally develop new ways to formulate ideas.Also,knowledge about fellow workers' untapped abilities might just foster encouragement by staff of each other. Managers would do well to use this tool to understand the staff they supervise and allow each member to then do what he does best for the good of the whole! This is a gem.

                I read this book in 1998 and moved out of stocks because of it. Thank You Mr. Sarlos.

                I only wish Mr. Sarlos was still with us to give his insight on the current market.

                As of January 2003, the market is only back to the level it was at the time Mr. Sarlos wrote this book and ringing the alarm bell !!!

                Do we still have this much further to fall ?

                I love reading the reviews of this book. The one from Canada in early 2000 should become a classic. If only the reviewer had read some financial history and maybe 'Extraordinary Popular Delusions & The Madness of Crowds' by Charles Mackay. He'd have realised that the 90s IT-bubble was nothing new and merely the latest in a long line of manias that date back centuries. They all had sad and sorry endings. This one was no different.

                Full marks to Sarlos for having the guts to publish contrarian views with such impeccable timing. It just goes to prove that American investors can be just as unsophisticated as their so-called Emerging Markets couterparts.

                I've never read this book but I had to respond to the previous reviewer. I give this book five stars based on it's correct prophecies. The market tanked alright.

                I love reading what previous reviewer has to say! Pure bull mania. Of course, I was hardly any better back then. So we now know that tech doesn't need a new valuation metric and that boomers can put their money under their mattresses like the Japanese have been doing for the last decade. I guess private purchase price means something after all ;)

                Before I get to my review, can someone out there tell me why this book is out of print? I paid over $100 for it. It was published by a small press here in Austin, and I even called them about it. If you have answer, please write me at .

                Some fans of Rand have said that if _Atlas Shrugged_ is ever made into a movie that it should be "updated"--i.e., the passenger train industry should be replaced by passenger airplanes. I think it would quite foolish to tamper with _Atlas_ in such a way. It could also be said that the story of "Atlas Shrugged with Airplanes" has already been written and actually happened.

                That story is _Southwest Passage_ by Lamar Muse. Muse was the founding CEO of Southwest Airlines up till 1978. The book also includes many details about his personal life and his other adventures in the airline industry before and after Southwest. The best parts are his years with Southwest, and Muse is rightfully proud of all the things his little airline has accomplished since his departure from the company.

                It all started when Herb Kelleher and Rollin King were talking in San Antonio. They decided to start an airline that would simply operate in the triangle formed by Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. In 1967, they got started and immediately found themselves challenged in court by the established carriers of the time--Texas International (based in Houston) and Braniff (based in Dallas). As a result of this "business harassment" (a term used by several judges), Southwest's first flight didn't take off until 18 June 1971.

                Southwest was not the first intra-state carrier. Their inspiration had been the California-based Pacific Southwest Airlines which had started in 1949, and they took many of PSA's best ideas. But just like PSA, Southwest was free from the federal regulation of the Civil Aeronautics Board. (See www.catchoursmile.com for the story of PSA.)

                In 1972, Muse made a critical decision which set the tone for much of the company's success since that time. Losing money at the time, Muse decided that the best way to raise money was to sell one of their four planes. Maintaining the same staff and scheduled with three planes, Muse then challenged his team to turn (completely unload and reload) planes in TEN MINUTES. It worked, and Southwest still turns planes faster than its competitors today. They have also never furloughed an employee.

                Southwest has always viewed its greatest competitor as the automobile and still does today. The stats in this book show this story. Southwest didn't take much business away from the other airlines. Southwest got people who had never flown before to fly.

                Muse also tells about their expansion into other Texas cities and more of the other dirty tricks engaged in by the entrenched competitors. Dallas and Houston also did what they could to make life difficult for them. It seems as though Houston has given up, but Dallas (their home city) still probably would rather see Southwest leave town even today.

                Then there is the interesting part of federal deregulation. Muse gave a great speech on the subject before Congress. Most of the established carriers (such as American) bitterly opposed deregulation. Only United Airlines favored it.

                Southwest is one of America's great business success stories. In terms of passenger numbers, Southwest is America's #1 airline for domestic flights. Their stock price has even outperformed Walmart's during its 35-year history. Southwest has turned a profit every year since 1973 and is the only airline which gets an A credit rating from Standard and Poors. Their leaders have shown that the best way to get rich is to treat employees with respect and dignity and to give customers great service. The good guys won.

                Unfortunately, the book has no photographs. It seems to indicate that Muse didn't take many or that many people didn't want to give him any for the book. Maybe he just didn't ask.

                In making a reservation on Southwest's website last week I noted that they are pushing two books about Southwest, one being "NUTS" and the other "THE SOUTHWEST WAY." There was no mention whatsoever about "SOUTHWEST PASSAGE", one of the best business books I have ever read. Could it be that the true story about Southwest in its early days during which the course was set for its 32 years of profitable operations, as told in SOUTHWEST PASSAGE, is so totally different from the tales told in the other books by the airline's current executives that SOUTHWEST PASSAGE has been blackballed? I know nothing about the authors of the three books, but I do know that Lamar Muse was there on the scene and can prove everything he says in SOUTHWEST PASSAGE while the authors of the other two books were probably still just gleams in their fathers' eyes.

                5 out of 5 stars Required reading for students of Southwest.......2003-11-10

                There's been a lot of blather written about Southwest, including _Nuts_ and _The Southwest Way_. My opinion is that most of these books are written by people who don't know much about the airline business and who are trying to push their pet management theory. I'm a professional airline analyst, for what that's worth.

                Muse was actually there and made it happen as the first CEO of Southwest.

                Is it a perfect book? No. Muse is opinionated, and you're definitely getting his side of the story. But he's up front about that and doesn't pretend otherwise. It's also as much about him as it is about Southwest, but that's interesting too. He's had quite an eventful life, and his prior experience is totally relevant to what happened at Southwest and why. I think he'd be the last to claim that he's lead a perfect existence.

                He also quotes liberally from the letters to the board of directors that he wrote every month. These are valuable historical documents, and one hopes that Muse preserves them by donating them to a transportation library somewhere.

                Muse isn't a professional writer, but his language is direct and to the point. The book is informative, easy to read and entertaining. Even if it wasn't, it would still be worth reading, given his critical role in the birth of Southwest.

                One day, someone will write a serious business history of Southwest. When that happens, Muse's book (and hopefully his letters to the board) will be key source material. In the meantime, this is probably the single most interesting book on the foundation of Southwest.

                4 out of 5 stars Very good book for airline/aviation buffs.......2003-05-29

                This book was very interesting in relation to the history of several airlines. It covers Lamar and his stints at Trans-Texas, American, Southern, Central, Universal, Southwest, and even covers some of Muse Air. Too bad no pictures were included.

                              Lenor's story of living through extremely frightening circumstances is truly mouth dropping amazing. Not only did she face being diagnosed with a very rare bone cancer, but the only effective treatment for her was a full amputation (hemipelvectomy) with surgical removal of her leg and a portion of her pelvis. During a time in my life when faced with the same diagnosis, and so discouraged I was given this book which gave me the hope to carry on. Lenor's story of how she dealt with her diagnosis, her surgical experience and her positive recovery is more than inspiring. No, this book is not gory, it is uplifting and positive and teaches how to get inner strength through such an incredibly devastating life circumstance. Even without facing such medical possibilities, this is a book for anyone to benefit from reading.
