So boring my pillow needs a pillow.......2007-03-20
I absolutely love history and foreign relations, but this book is written in the most boring style possible. Horrible, I wouldn't recommend it. He has some great points, but you are better off reading the book reviews to get his argument.
A major contribution to field of comparative history.......1999-05-25
Please disregard the 2 of 5 rating from the sleep deprived person from North Carolina. This 5 out of 5 work of comparative history will keep you turning the pages. It may actually disturb your sleep with its effective demolition of the historiography of American exceptionalism when it comes to imperialism towards indigenous peoples.
More importantly, this is NOT a narrative about the Sioux or the Zulu as "victims." Although many scholars have noted the impact of Western imperial expansion on indigenous peoples throughout the world, it is only recently that historians have begun to employ the ill-defined and problematic methodology of comparative history to understand the similarities and differences of these diverse colonial encounters.
Gump's book integrates two major themes. One theme is that indigenous societies and cultures are dynamic. This means that they are characterized by intentional action and change. Whether the forces of change are internal or external, indigenous societies are not static.
The second theme is that societies and cultures are components of particular times and actual places. There is a dynamic interrelationship between attitudes, values, beliefs, behaviors and the specific circumstances of historic events. Examining two of these 19th century interrelationships provides us with an understanding of the dynamism of indigenous peoples' cultural adaptation and resilience. The Sioux and the Zulu were as involved in the historical process of change over time as any other people. In spite of their economic and cultural marginalization, adjusting to these circumstances did not necessarily diminish their cultural values.
For a good introduction to the comparative frontier history of the United States and South Africa see Leonard Thompson and Howard Lamar's chapter, "Comparative Frontier History" in their book, The Frontier in History: North America and South Africa Compared, (Yale University Press, 1981), 3-13.
For a comparative study in race relations consult George M. Frederickson's book, White Supremacy: A Comparative Study in American and South African History,(Oxford University Press, 1981).
A compairson of 2 native cultures fighting for a way of life.......1999-03-12
I was put to sleep three times by this book. Those poor natives. They just can't get no justice. This book does provide a new look at what an injustice western civilation has done to native people.

Book Description
Michael "Tiny" Saul has built a tremendous following among day traders, short-term stock traders, and swing traders with his insightful, unbiased, real-time, chat-based market analysis and commentary in the Trendfund.com live trading chat room. Each and every day he diligently analyzes the stock market with self-taught routines to uncover the best trading opportunities. In his new book, Charting, an Introduction to Technical Analysis and its Concepts, Saul divulges the technically based analysis and routines he employs in his real-time and end of day work.
Unlike most books on technical analysis, which include too much extraneous material and leave the trader poorly equipped to face daily challenges, Saul focuses on how to use a specific set of technical methods into a unified strategy for selecting short-term trading opportunities in all market environments.
Instead of being deluged with technical concepts, Saul teaches traders to focus on the methods necessary to pull the trigger on trades. Experienced traders will find Saul's direct and easy to follow approach a breath of fresh air as he concentrates on what trading is really all about: finding consistent money-making opportunities.
Customer Reviews:
He is what he sounds like.......2005-12-17
It's a rare experience picking up a book about a seemingly boring subject and not being able to put it down. That's what I call style. They call him "Tiny" but he's a huge source of knowledge and introspection. He makes the subject grow on you and you can feel the intensity of his expertise on the subject. This man is an obvious winner and this book is an accurate representation of that man. As you go through the basics your base of knowledge grows exponentially. The subject matter becomes interesting and even the charts and illustrations make sense the way he explains them. The writing is incredibly fluid and one subject flows into the next. I understand that this is Saul's first book but I ceratinly hope its not his last. His intellect and Parness's intuition combine to give us an unbeatable team. I really can't see either man working indeoendent of one another. Charting is the soul of the what stock to buy, when to buy and at what price and what is your exit and risk minimization parameters. All of this applied through charting to generate profits in the stock market. This is a winning book written by a proven winner. It is a must buy for anyone in or going to be in the stock market. I can't wait for the next book.
A Waste of Time and Money.......2005-12-13
There are so many other books on technical analysis that are more comprehensive than this one (e.g. Kamish, How Technical Analysis Works). I bought it because I had received so much good information at Trendfund.com, the website affiliated with Tiny. I had hoped that this book would continue with great real life examples of successful trades. The book does a poor job of discussing general technical analysis tools. I was disappointed. I'm willing to sell my copy for $10. I can't imagine anyone giving this book 5 stars unless they have a financial interest in the book's success. Of course, you can get all this information for free by logging on to Stockcharts.com.
A Waste of Time and Money.......2005-12-13
I ordered this book because I had received so much good information from Trendfund.com, the website that Tiny is affiliated with. What I got was a book that does an incomplete job of describing a limited number of general technical analysis tools. There are so many other book that are more complete, like Kamich ,"How Technical Analysis Works", which I also own and would recommend hands-down over this book.
Great for beginners and more advanced traders.......2005-04-23
I give this 4 stars, because I never rate anything a 1 or a 5.
This book is for serious traders, not for those with an MBA in finance. There is a difference. I don't have an MBA, but I make money almost every day using technical analysis. I have learned a lot of that from Michael Saul. There is a learning curve, and if you have financial baggage or a "sure thing" kind of investing attitude, you might as well forget this book.
The details can be a bit much for beginners, but just paper-trade with the info at first until you begin to get the feel of it.
This book teaches you how to recognize the signals (like reversal bars, bull flags) that the market is sending about shifts in momentum and direction. It is amazing how well it works. Not every time, but more often than not, it's correct. And that's all you need if you want to make money day trading.
This is not investing, and requires study (like charting/TA books) and daily research. It's not for everyone, and you must learn the material, and then test it on paper before you trade for real, just so you'll be comfortable with the accuracy of technical analysis.
I'm not sure what the previous reviewer was referring to concerning hawking infomercials - I don't think anybody ever sold a book by itself on an infomercial. Certainly not one as dry as a technical analysis book. And specialty books get self-published all the time, especially when the potential market for them is so small (that probably explains the high price, I would think). I'm not trying to defend Michael Saul; he doesn't need it. It just seems strange that someone would use those silly comments to try to discredit a book that he admits he can't understand.
On the negative side, it IS EXPENSIVE. If you can get it used, save yourself some money. I also agree with another reviewer that much of the information here IS available on the web, but you'd really already need to know it before you'd know where to find it. Not to mention you'd have to wade through plenty of bad info to find the good stuff on charting on the internet (been there, done that). Save yourself the time and hassle by getting the book.
Bottom line, it's a good, accurate, (but expensive), technical analysis book. I recommend it.
Great book for Beginners.......2004-09-02
It's a great book if your just starting to get into trading, a bit pricy but worth the info. On the bad side is that alot of trading info is on the web now. If you look really hard you could probably find all of the stuff scattered over the web. But a beginner wouldn't know where to start. Like how he goes over TA indicators like ADX and RSI, but if you didn't know what they were in the first place then you wouldn't know where to look. Concise and full of info.
Book Description
The Strategic Partnering Handbookis an internationally renowned how-to guide for creating successful partnerships and alliances both within and across borders. While previous editions have all been top sellers, today's rapidly changing global business environment requires a new edition featuring revised strategies coupled with current case studies and examples.
Lendrum argues that in order for businesses to grow and achieve a sustainable competitive advantage, they must develop quality relationships between customers and suppliers - both within and outside the organisation. To illustrate this point he draws on fresh case studies and research to present the many facets of modern strategic partnering.

Book Description
In this remarkable book, Charles P. Pierce intertwines two dramatic stories-the scientific race to discover the causes of Alzheimer's and the moving experiences of the Pierce family as they struggle with the disease.
More than four million Americans develop Alzheimer's every year, just as Charles Pierce's father did-horrifically and genetically-and in
Hard to Forget, Pierce takes us deep into the country of this disease, to explore how it affects both the body and a family. When his father is diagnosed with Alzheimer's, the author goes on a quest to discover everything he can about the disease. He discusses here Dr. Alois Alzheimer's work early in the twentieth century, then shows how Watson and Crick's announcement of the double-helix structure of DNA opened up the field of Alzheimer's research and led to discoveries by the "genome cowboys"-Dr. Allen Roses, Dr. Peter Hyslop, and others-of the genetic components of the disease. At the heart of this book, too, is the powerful, emotional story of how the Pierce family coped with Alzheimer's and with the threat that the author-and his children-might also inherit it.
Elegant and richly informative,
Hard to Forget is a unique and provocative book.
Customer Reviews:
Much more than an Alzheimer's story..........2000-07-17
I had to search hard to find this book, because other "Charles Pierces" kept coming up online and it was hidden in "aging" or "disease, listed alphabetically" in the bookstores, but I recommend you persevere -- it was worth it. Somehow the author manages to combine a poignant memoir, exploring the way we're taught in our families of origin to deal (or not deal, in the case of the Pierces) with serious issues, with a highly readable account of what doctors know and are racing to find out about this cruel disease. On Saturdays, I often listen to Pierce on the NPR shows "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me" and "Only a Game," and he is very funny. Some of that humor, although darker, leavens this book, which also gives an amazingly understandable summary of what scientists know about Alzheimer's and possible treatments. I hope people will read the excerpt here (or in Yankee magazine) and give this book a chance, even if they don't personally know someone with Alzheimer's. With all of us Baby Boomers aging faster than we care to admit, there are expected (according to last week's cover story in Time magazine) to be many, many new cases that eventually will touch most of us. Alzheimer's disease is depressing, but this beautifully written book is not. Highly recommended.
Informative, quick read.......2000-06-29
Fortunately, my family has no history of Alzheimer's disease. My only experience with the disease came from my next door neighbor. An elderly couple moved into the house next store to my family home when I was only 3 years old. The couple became my third set of grandparents. The husband, Howard, died about three years later. His wife began to suffer from Alzheimer's shortly after his death. I remember being very confused when she asked me to fetch her sweater that was upstairs on the sewing machine, when she lived in a one story home. My mother tried to explain her condition to me, but I did not understand how she could not know there was not a second floor in the house she had been in for about 5 years. Her family decided to put her into a nursing home because of an injury she sustained in a fall. She died before the Alzheimer's got worse. Since I never had to deal with anyone suffering from Alzheimer's after my neighbor died, I never learned about the disease. I picked up "Hard To Forget: An Alzheimer's Story" to learn about the disease, and what happened to my third grandmother. I found the book very informative and interesting to read. Pierce wonderfully blends together the history of the disorder and his own family's experiences. I managed to finish the book in one sitting because of Pierce's captivating style. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about Alzheimer's disease, or anyone who is looking for an enjoyable and informative read.
Honest story-telling and solid reporting.......2000-06-23
As an Alzheimer's family member, I read "Hard to Forget" with great interest. When my mother was diagnosed 13 years ago, my family went through stages of initial denial and then finally accepting the diagnosis and then coping as best we could...a similar story to the Pierce family - and to so many other families. The difference is that my mother was not an "early onset" patient. Hers is probably not the "familial" Alzheimer's Disease. And the terror is not as great for my sister and I as it is for Charles Pierce. But it is still there.
The author has a wonderful way of describing the emotional toll of the disease but also of shining a light on the heroism of caretakers like his wife Margaret. I've seen the devotion of wives, husbands, children and grandchildren as they pay weekly and sometimes daily visits to their loved ones in the nursing home. The visits go on for years. They watch as their loved one slips away. But it helps to know that you are not alone in this difficult journey. "Hard to Forget" will help all the families who are coping and who are waiting for a cure.
To The Scientist.......2000-06-09
I just finished Charles Pierce's book and must say that I was very moved by it. In reading your reviews I was struck by the comments by the research scientist who pointed out all the errors in Mr. Pierce's telling. Perfect illustration of his point, I think. We readers aren't quite as concerned with the exact dates as we are with the the evolution of the research as a whole. Can't you all just get along?
A gripping story but a faltering presentation.......2000-05-29
I decided to read this book based on a review in The New York Times book review, and the recent knowledge that a family member's symptoms have been tentatively diagnosed as possibly early signs of Alzheimer's. I found the story gripping, but the execution sometimes got in the way for me. I suspect that a more interventionist editor might have forced Pierce to drop some of the unnecessarily detailed place descriptions and reorganized the order of presentation to be more coherent. As it is, however, the book provides lots of interesting and useful information, mixing the history of research on the disease with the personal memoir of Pierce and his family coping with the disease as manifested in his father, uncles and aunt. It is not an easy read, but it is worth the effort.
