Best self and group improvement book I've read in years!.......2002-04-13

This is the best book about self-improvement, group facilitation, and business that I have read in years, going all the way back to Covey's "7 Habits... Book."

Dr. Cramer exhibits unbridled optimism grounded by realism, and expects the same from those following her advice. The constant themes of creativity, resilience, and constructive growth over reactivity, despair, and corrective discipline make a lot of sense.

My only reason for not giving this 5 stars is I would have preferred a shorter book... though I am hard-pressed to recommend what should be cut. On that note, the book is very well-organized, and you can quickly find the main points and exercises if you wish.

I heartily recommend this to anyone facing insurmountable obstacles and not enough resources, especially someone in an organizational setting.

When the going gets tough, the tough get creative!.......2001-11-06

Somebody once told me that when the clothes washer was invented, it freed up an enormous amount of time for women, who then did...more laundry! They ended up right back where they were, only with larger piles of clothes to wash.

These days we use our Palm Pilots and Day Planners and cell phones and multi-tasking skills to squeeze more productivity out of each day. And with each precious minute we save, we do...exactly the same things.

Now Dr. Cramer has come along to wake us up. Faster, harder, and smarter sometimes works in the short term, but for the long haul we need to rethink our whole agenda. Tackling the world's largest "to do" list is not really a life plan. Using Dr. Cramer's six steps, we can shape a compelling vision of what we want to achieve, so that everything we do fuels - and is fueled by - this greater purpose. What happens to enormously capable people when they are vastly overloaded with work? In too many cases, these individuals will focus all their energies on work, while building intense stress loads that reduce their effectiveness. The result is either failure to get the job done or eventual burnout. The personal lives of those involved are often left in total disarray in the process.

Dr. Cramer instead suggests that you step back and find a new solution that does not rely on working faster, harder and smarter. For example, ask yourself whether the task needs to be done at all. Often, the overwhelming task is a waste of time. A good example would be marketing programs that primarily bring in unprofitable customers.

In this interesting book, Dr. Cramer emphasizes ways to manage your psychological state that will help you step outside the day-to-day tasks to establish an effective strategy for accomplishing what you really want. When Faster, Harder, Smarter Is Not Enough is intended to be your coach and personal guide to "enlarge our capacity to be creative under fire." As a result, you will turn "stress into success" and be "energized rather than drained."

Her advice is supported by case histories from her executive coaching practice over 20 years, and exercises to help you build awareness and skills for being more creative. One of the most interesting ones is building a life map to see your patterns for getting into and out of overload situations. The book contains a continuing case history of a CEO who got out of touch with his real goals, and wanted to change. This example also shows the many ways that these methods can be employed throughout an organization.

She emphasizes 6 elements:

(1) " . . . see the big picture (externally) and . . . be aware of your emotional landscape (internally)." To do this, she encourages you to be curious and committed, while being intuitive and aware.

(2) " . . . imagine the best possible outcome and . . . become energized by how excellent it is."

(3) " . . . concrete yet flexible plan for achieving your goal, and . . . give up any counterproductive ideas or habits that might sabotage your efforts." This requires being imaginative, visionary, observant, and innovative.

(4) " . . . involve in your game plan those you love and those you need." Here you need to be influential and collaborative, articulate and persuasive.

(5) " . . . implant your plan, watch your progress, overcome the obstacles that present themselves, and learn to capitalize on conflict." Here, you are trying to be resilient and resourceful, fearless and authentic in your actions.

(6) "Enjoy your achievements . . . and do it all over again!" To do this, be passionate, proactive, inspired and confident.

You start with developing a list of long-term personal and professional goals, " . . . then connect the dots." You will do this by becoming richer in mental and emotional resources, deeper in your thinking, and wiser in your choices. You will also become better at avoiding your deepest habits of harmful blind reaction.

Having co-authored a book on developing better decision-making and action habits, I found this approach to creating the right psychological environment for such changes to be very interesting. I thought that points two and four above are important, and are often forgotten in the rush to accomplish. I suspect that the best use of this book is in combination with any of the many excellent books about how to become more creative, to add more focus into the psychological space that this book creates. Without more specific content on the technology of creating these solutions, those who employ this book will create better solutions . . . but ones that I suspect are much less than their full potential to achieve through their organizations.

After you finish exploring these more resourceful states, I encourage you to think about how you allocate your time. Breaking patterns of where you spend too much time that is not supportive of your real intentions is a great way to get started!

Always spend time to think through the questions of whether the work needs to be done, how it can be done vastly better, and how you can get enormously greater results from the same effort. The more overwhelming the situation seems, the more important it is to do this!

My oven rejects this........2003-10-10

I hate to be the party-pooper, but these recipes just weren't that good. Since I am always modifying baked-good recipes to make them slightly more "healthy" (kind of a misnomer since we're talking about things usually made with highly processed white flour, lots of sugar, butter etc...and I wouldn't necessarily call the recipes in this book "healthy" either) I thought I would give this book a go. First off, the author eliminates all but 2 tbsp of fat in the majority of the recipes. I know what you're thinking, Yippee! Now you think you can polish off that whole loaf of lemon poundcake with no remorse. But the thing is, you won't want to after tasting a bite. You'll probably end up throwing most of the cake out! (now there's a diet). I tried three of the "substitute the majority of the fat with applesauce" recipes (a lemon cake, a zucchini bread, and something with carrots in it) and all of them had this weird "rubbery" taste/texture. Ever had a cake that proceeds to battle with your teeth? Completely unnatural! There is such a thing as not having enough fat--I am reminded of an old college roommate who made "chocolate chip cookies" and replaced all the butter in them with some sort of prune goo. She tried to convince me that they were delicious, but I picked one up and proceeded to bend it in half...its ends touched and the cookie did not even break! This revolted me so much that I threw it toward the garbage can, but missed, and it actually *bounced* off the floor! So if you want to achieve a similar effect, by all means, go ahead and applesauce all of that fat on out of here. For me though, I'd rather have something delicious and temper it with moderate portions.

I love this Cookbook. I am retired and Lowfat Cooking and Baking is important to my wife and I. The recipes I have used were wonderful. I especially like all the crossover information Sarah has done.Its all right there, very easy to use. Plus her Web Site is a Godsend. Use it all the time. Highly Recommend it and the Cookbook.

Sarah Phillips has a lot of great ideas. However, this cookbook doesn't deserve a 5-star rating because:

(1) some of her recipes have more sugar than most.

(2) she included recipes that call for Healthy Oven Baking Mix, which I don't have & don't wish to purchase. Maybe I'm splitting hairs here, but I purchased the book thinking that all the recipes would be completely from scratch.

I have hundreds of cookbooks, but this one is going to be my favorite. I love dessert and have a hard time finding recipes that are healthy and that my family will enjoy. The recipes are easy and call for regular ingredients. There is nothing better than butter in a dessert and Sarah has found a way to use butter and still keep the recipe healthy.

The list of books written on hedge funds is a short one, and this book is certainly the finest on the subject. The professionals who contributed their specialized knowledge are of the highest caliber, and better yet, many of them can be reached for counsel. Any investor with the capacity to invest at this level ought to know the mechanics of the various methodologies as clearly presented by the authors. I found all of the information to be useable and valuable information with absolutely no filler. Particularly of interest to me was all of the legal, tax and regulatory information which quite literally provided me with a blueprint from which I will begin building my (as GP) Private Investment Partnership. This book will eliminate countless hours with a securities attorney because now I know exactly how to direct the counsel.

There are 30 chapters in the book, discussing various investing concepts ranging from the obvious (Understand Whatever You Own) to the mundane (Put Total Return before Current Income). There are no dynamic strategies here! If you are an investment dunce, you may be able to get some useful information from the book (the same, or better, info may be available at many web sites). If you have moderate-to-advanced investing knowledge, however, you are not missing anything by not buying this book.

This book reads like the mad rantings of a very PO-ed former Microsoft employee. My feelings about the company have only become more solidified since the time I read this book nearly 4 years ago - a nasty monopolist that gives new meaning to the word "compete." But don't be fooled by either the company or the dope who started crying wolf after he likely profited and now has no other Microsoft to latch onto. Read this book only if you appreciate the rights of both sides to air their story and then you can make up your mind.

This guy is an embarrassmant to the publisher. His brainless rantings may be the result of rage fueled by something in his personal life perhaps?

I'm not a great fan of Microsofts business ethic, but the author is narrow minded, unable to reason or dicuss. Like most folk who rant over anything, the text isn't worth reading. I binned the book.

Don't read it on a beach...........1999-10-20

...especially not a windy one. This book literally starts *decomposing* the moment you first open it. After about 30 pages I ended up with a lap full of loose pages, some of them not even paginated. Took me a good hour to put the damn thing back together. The press itself looks like it was done on a cheap inkjet printer, and sometimes it is hard to tell "e" from "o", "g" from "j" etc... As for the content - this book reads like one of those UFO/government/name-your conspiracy pamphlets. There is a lot of biterness, resentment and outright rage aimed towards Microsoft, which apparently wronged the author in some way. These uncontrolled emotions distort the whole idea the author is trying to present: that there are other alternatives to Microsoft products. The editing is nonexistent - some paragraphs and whole chapters feel like they were written in one rage-fueled take, with occasional trips to the basement to punch holes in the walls with bare fists.

This person shouldn't be writing books.

The Great Correspondent.......2004-11-06

All the letters published in this wonderful book were handwritten by President Reagan, typed by secretaries and mailed to the correspondents. The correspondence includes letters to private citizens, famous and obscure lifelong friends, and heads of state. They reveal a noble spirit, a kind and decent man who took a personal interest in the lives of ordinary people.

The book starts with an introduction and editorial notes. The correspondence is divided into chapters for every year from 1981 to 1988/1989. Each of these aforementioned chapters has an introduction of the year concerned, discussing the major evens of that year, thus providing a historical background to the themes of the letters.

The correspondence displays a tapestry of Ronald Reagan's wisdom, resolve, decency, optimism, humanity and humour in his replies to young people, unemployed workers, press columnists, Hollywood friends, Soviet leaders, sports figures, relatives of soldiers and critics of government policies. It shows his positive approach to the economy, his frequent frustration with the media and an obstructive Congress, and his determination to halt Soviet expansionism, to reduce taxes and to rebuild the military.

Reagan's style was warm and down to earth and often gently humorous. Replies to his critics were factual and respectful. There are 14 black and white photographs that include pictures of Reagan with William Buckley, Michael Gorbachev, chief of correspondence Anne Higgins, personal secretary Kathy Osbourne and Reagan's young friend Rudolph Hines.

Unlike the impression created by certain elements in the media at the time, Ronald Reagan was a highly intelligent man with a keen insight into domestic issues and international relations. truly warm and wonderful person and this book captures so much of his character! Only a sampling of the thousands of hand-written letters composed during his eight years as president; these documents give us an insight not only to a President and the issues of the times; but also an insight to the very human side of this remarkable man.

Do not read this from a partisan point of view because it was not written for that purpose. The authors compiled this work to show the many facets of the man chosen for the highest office in the United States. His love of country, his love for his country's people, his fantastic sense of humor, his concern for every issue that passed his desk and his sincere desire to answer all who wrote to him in a clear and concise manner (from children to the aged), show the full picture of Reagan, the person, Reagan the President, Reagan the husband and father and Reagan the flag bearer for this country.

You don't have to agree with him; you don't have to be Republican nor do you have to see him in any particular light. I believe that if you read his letters, you will find it both enlightening and fulfilling. I enjoyed and hope you will also.

Insight into the Character of Reagan from his own Words.......2004-01-13

It turns out that Ronald Reagan, often derided for intellectual shortcomings, was a vociferous letter writer throughout his eight years in the White House. This collection pulls together in a single book, many of the letters he wrote on all varieties of subjects and to all manners of persons. There are letters to supporters, letters to opponents, letters to world leaders and letters to Americans who wrote either in support or critically. Most incredibly, there are letters Reagan wrote to a child with whom he maintained a "pen pal" correspondence throughout his time in Washington.

These letters, many with handwritten additions or paragraphs were Reagan's personal correspondence, not edited or ghost written by speech writers or other advisors. They reveal a man who was not detached from either the day to day workings of his administration or the policy arguments the administration was engaged in. Many of the letters are touching or filled with humor. Many times I found myself chuckling. For example, when Reagan gently let down a boy who was hoping to receive federal cleanup funds because his mother had declared his room a "disaster area." Some have a hint of anger or defiance. Many of the letters are responses by Reagan to individual citizens who wrote to him critical of a certain policy. His replies were always polite and respectful of alternative opinions. But he seems to have made the effort to convince these people of their mistakenness. The letters reveal much about Reagan the man. The book is arranged in chronological order with an introduction written by the editors detailing each year of the administration and the main issues Reagan faced both personal and professional. In this manner the book reads like a memoir of Reagan's time in Washington. I do not intend to discuss whether Reagan was right or wrong in his views or his actions. Obviously, Reagan believed he was correct and his letters reflect this belief. Others certainly disagree and may well be right to do so. But it will be helpful to an understanding of Reagan and his times to put to bed the myth that Reagan was a scripted movie actor. These letters prove this is not so. History will be served if Reagan's opponents can criticize the actions he took or the views he held and not re-hash a phony mythology. I recommend this excellent collection to anyone, friend or foe, interested in Ronald Reagan and his times.

Great insight into the heart and mind of a great American. The letters contained in this book illustrate Reagan's convictions, humility and sense of humor. His letters to ordinary citizens are the best - gracious responses to both complimentary and negative letters he received. Reagan's love for his country and his fellow citizens is evident throughout. This is a truly heartwarming read.

Is this 'SELLER' on heavy 'DRUGS' or something................................2006-05-27

I thought i was seeing things when i seen this book advertised for $399.99. This is a 'VIDEO GAME/STATEGY GUIDE',NOT A 1ST EDITION COPY OF 'SHAKESPEER'S "HAMLET"' OR ANY OF THE GREATEST 'LITERARY' WORK'S OF THE PAST CENTURY!!! WHAT KIND OF 'NUT' WOULD BUY (OR TRY TO SELL...FOR THAT MATTER) a 'VIDEO GAME STRAREGY GUIDE FOR $400.00??? I am a 'HUGE' Gamer and a collecter of all things that have to do with 'PC & CONSOLE' GAMES, but there is no way in 'THIS LIFE TIME OR ANY OTHER' that i would pay the kind of COMPLETELY "OUTRAGOUS' price that this seller is asking for. WORD TO THE WISE TO THIS SELLER:' LAY OFF THE CRACK COCAINE'.........................

I can't believe this guide is selling for 100 dollars.......2006-02-20

One of the mysteries of life. How can a substandard strategy guide for a game that most people have never heard of sell for 100 plus dollars? I lucked out on E-bay, and bought the game and guide together for 45 dollars. But my friend has been searching endlessly on ebay, amazon, and all over the net for this stupid guide and has yet to find it at a reasonable price. One of the third party sellers he found tried to sell it for 700 dollars!! What the hell is going on?

At any rate, this guide is probably worth 10 dollars. There are all sorts of errors in the walkthrough, grammatical errors throughout, and they don't even tell you everything a guide should, like the location of all the hidden treasures and items. Sure, it tells you where to find the discoveries, but anyone can find that information in greater detail on the web.

Certainly I can sympathize for the gamers who discovered that Skies of Arcadia is probably one of the most underated games for the gamecube, but if these high priced sellers are tempting you, don't even think about it. You won't even be able to afford the gun and bullets required to off yourself once you realize the stupidity of your purchase.

- Good images
- Decent info about most of the game, including Crew members, weapons, armor, attacks and magic attack

Cons:
- No maps
- One page in the enemy section is mixed up
- Not enough enemy info
- No info on most sidequest

This guide was useless. The story of the game is pretty straightforward as is and does not require a guidebook to help anyone. The only reason a person, like myself, would be interested in such a purchase would be if they could not find the missing discoveries. The book does not list any of these within its bindings. Waste of money.

Rip Off.......2004-07-19

The person selling this used book ($59 for a $15 book) is a rip off! Go to PRIMA GUIDES on-line and order an e-download for about $10. Screw profiteers!!!
