      Book Description

As one of ten kids in a blue-collar family in Edgewater, New Jersey, Barbara Corcoran didn't have many material advantages. She shared her bedroom with five sisters and shared her socks in a communal sock drawer. Yet she grew up to have plenty of self-confidence, because her mother had an amazing gift for nurturing the unique talents in each of her children. Barbara's mom didn't know much about business, but she understood how the world works, and how to make the most of what you've got.

In the early 1970s, Barbara borrowed $1000 from her boyfriend to get her start in real estate. That led to the birth of The Corcoran Group, which today is New York's premier residential real estate brokerage, with over $1 billion in annual revenue. Her amazing rise to the top has become the stuff of legend and inspiration.

Barbara -- now nicknamed the Queen of New York Real Estate -- credits her success to not just to hard work and determination, but to her mom's enormously valuable advice. Not just the standard maternal wisdom, but real gems such as, "If the clubhouse is quiet, they're probably not making spaghetti."

In Use What You've Got, Corcoran illustrates her mother's wisdom and insight with twenty-five "how tos" for getting ahead in business. Each lesson is brought to life with real business scenarios, an outrageous childhood adventure story, and tips garnered from Corcoran's years in the most competitive real estate market in the world.

      Her mother's winning advice includes:

¥ "There's always room for one more."
¥ "It's your game, make up your own rules."
      ¥ "You've got to bully a bully."

With a tell-it-like-it-is attitude, Corcoran offers her keys to success -- from dressing the part and overcoming obstacles to the nuts and bolts of hiring, firing, motivating, marketing, and much, much more.

I read this book off and on for two days because I couldn't put it down! This book really surprised me in that it is packed with good advice and stories that will make you laugh and astonish you. I liked how her family was presented, it made me wish I had grown up with them! I loved how the stories from her childhood were directly related to how she operated her business.

This is one great book! Anyone in business for themselves should read it. This book is interesting, funny, exciting and fun to read. You really do get hooked into and can't put it down! This has got to be THE best business book I've ever read!

I thought the Bonus Manual was a great way to end the book!

I almost feel like my review should be first.

I have squandered a small fortune on self improvement books.

This book enabled me to commit.

And if you haven't committed then you are waiting.

This book was such a good read, and so full of basic common sense and encouragement that you (women is particular) can do anything you set your mind to. I highly, highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars great advice for all.......2006-04-28

I really enjoyed this book.Practical, upbeat, encouraging. While I am in the healthcare field I learned many things that I was able put into practice in my own business. I really learned a lot and highly recommend this book. Susanna Thomas

      5 out of 5 stars Common sense + chutzpah = success.......2005-01-22

If you're a fan of the novel Woman of Substance by Barbara Taylor Bradford, this is the business book for you. Barbara Corcoran's rags to riches story of how she went from diner waitress to the Queen of Manhattan Real Estate reads more like a novel than a business book. And it goes to show - sometimes the best advice is plain old common sense. (But having a good sense of humor and a lot of "chutzpah" certainly doesn't hurt either!)

In Use What You've Got, Barbara shares her hilarious stories about growing up, getting into trouble, failing miserably, and then starting over again. In each chapter, she comes back to one of her mom's unconventional lessons, and how it applies in the real world of business. Cheryl and Bill Jamison, authors of Smoke & Spice and American Home Cooking among others, have chosen to go industrial size with their latest: The Big Book of Outdoor Cooking and Entertaining: 850 recipes--200 of them for rubs and sauces. Over 500 pages thick. If ever there was a grilling, barbecuing, smoking, deep-frying kind of cookbook for a Supersized America, this is it, Big Gulp and all.

This is a book that starts at ground zero for cooks who want to grill great meals and put on terrific outdoor parties but don't have a clue how to start charcoal. "Of all the methods of outdoor home cooking, grilling is the most misunderstood. Many people aren't even aware that it's a specific method of cooking, assuming its just a generic term to cover anything done on a grill." The Jamisons take a stand for cooking over direct heat, eschewing the indirect and the covered grill. It's the center of gravity of their book, the element that makes them different than any of the other many books on cooking over open flame.

The rest of the story is found in the recipes, the tips, the sidebars, and asides. A word like bountiful hardly comes close to the impact of this tome. You got your rubs and marinades and the like, and your drinks, your starters, tapas, pizzas (yes, pizzas on the grill), burgers galore, fish and shellfish, poultry, pork, beef, all the other four-leggeds, veggies, grilled salads, side dishes (what's barbecue without sides?), and desserts.

If ever you have wanted to take the plunge into grilling and barbecue, The Big Book of Outdoor Cooking and Entertaining is an all-inclusive, user-friendly place to start. --Schuyler Ingle

          Book Description

America's outdoor cooking experts Cheryl and Bill Jamison have something big to say. So it takes a book this big to hold it all. They have put their knowledge about outdoor cooking and entertaining into one gigantic, colossal, humongous, comprehensive guide. Bursting with more than 850 recipes and hundreds of tips and how-tos for grilling, barbecuing, smoking, rotisserie roasting, planking, big-pot frying, and boiling, The Big Book of Outdoor Cooking and Entertaining is the only backyard cookbook you'll ever need.

Cheryl and Bill traveled the globe sampling regional outdoor favorites, from barbecued Kansas City ribs to Texas brisket. They feasted on succulent rotisserie chickens from France, and banana-leaf-wrapped dishes from Mexico's Yucatán. They learned from the experts who fry up Chesapeake crab cakes, boil up a mess of Cajun crawfish, or perch poultry on a beer can for a long soak in wood smoke. Then they came home and cooked and cooked until they had it right, so you can get it right.

Whether it's hot little tapas, a serious steak, a juicy burger, flavorful fish, a pan full of paella, pizza or pasta topped with grilled vegetables, or chicken done to a turn, Cheryl and Bill will coach you to perfect results. And to round out those party meals, they offer an enormous selection of starters, sides, drinks, and desserts that will win raves from family, friends, and guests.

The Big Book of Outdoor Cooking and Entertaining is chock-full of the Jamisons' signature easy-to-follow recipes for dishes like Jalapeño Cheeseburgers, Guava-Sauced Baby Back Ribs, Tamarind-Tangerine Chicken Breasts, and Guinness-Soaked Pork Chops. In addition, they've included a load of advice on equipment and tools, tips for the very best results, vignettes on outdoor cooking celebrations, and plenty of menu ideas.

With The Big Book of Outdoor Cooking and Entertaining, you'll be the life of your own party. It's not just the last word on outdoor cooking. It's the biggest.

5 out of 5 stars Exploring Outdoor Cooking at Its Flavorful Best!.......2007-05-10

This book was written to clear up some misunderstandings about grilling, and it exceeds in a winsome and delightful fashion!

Many wrongly think anything on a grill = grilling. This is dispelled and corrected with this book, so get it to learn on!

It is about flavor at the right temp to match with the ingredient being cooked, and here is the full range of methods and equipment: planking and big-pot frying and boiling and charcoal and gas and fire-pit and rotisserie and smoking and deep frying, et al.

It is a big collection well done! Idea is to dine and cook together outside and enjoy, so exploring new recipes, new methods, new equipment, will inspire and delight the cook and the fed, plus there are recipes for sides and desserts which require inside type preparation. It's almost 600 pages of advice and inspiration to take the journey.

          From the plethora of offerings here thus far, I've sampled only a few but they were outstanding: Salmon Fillets with Chile Honey Butter; Grilled Lamb Chops with Dill Yogurt Sauce; Grilled Eggplant Sandwiches;

The pleasure from trying these mouth watering delights is the vast untried collection that now awaits.

This is truly nice addition to the seasonsed griller as purchase or gift, as well as for the novice or in-betweener. Only downer which would have spiced up this offering is some color photos.

          5 out of 5 stars A must-have for the outdoor chef.......2007-01-03

To say this book is complete is an understatement. I bought this book after using their "Smoke & Spice" book for several years. "S & S" is strictly about low and slow cooking of beef and pork, while this one is much more broad, with excellent recipes and ideas for entertaining. If you're mainly concerned with making great BBQ pork and beef, I'd start with the "Smoke & Spice" book. The rubs and sauces recipes are super. But my guess is you'll soon graduate to this book if you like outdoor cooking and like to entertain.

5 out of 5 stars Authoritative, thorough and friendly.......2006-07-07

With 850 recipes, including 200 sauces and rubs, big and thorough are the operative words for this James Beard Award-winning team's latest (after "Good times, Good Grilling").

They begin with solid definitions of the various outdoor techniques. Grilling, for instance, is always done over direct heat, with the cover up. Does that mean you can't make beer can chicken? Sure you can, but don't call it grilled. Actually in the Jamisons' version it's smoked and takes leisurely hours.

Then there's rotisserie roasting, planking, and big-pot frying (corn dogs, catfish, fried Oreos) or boiling or steaming (blue crabs, lobster). But the majority of receipes employ their favorite cooking method - grilling. There's even a skewered grilled cheese sandwich appetizer and grilled fruit parfaits in addition to authoritative instructions on grilling burgers, steaks with mouthwatering sauces, suckling pig, ribs, game, and poultry of all kinds and cuts.

In addition to Smoked Beef Tenderloin, Ground Lamb Kebabs with Black Olive and Lemon Relish, and Planked Salmon, the Jamisons also include chapters on drinks, vegetables (Middle Eastern Peppers with Pomegranate Sauce, French Fries, Lacquered Tofu and Vegetable Skewers), breads, salads and desserts.

Geared to entertaining, most recipes serve six or more. The tone is opinionated, knowledgeable and friendly and we amateurs are encouraged to be creative and reflect our own flair and taste as long as we can refrain from doing anything scandalous, like flattening burgers with the spatula.

There are menus scattered throughout as well as boxed party tips, variations, and sidebars. Recipes cover an international gamut and all occasions from holiday parties to backyard picnics. A primer on grills and smokers explains what to look for and even includes brand names.

Dare I say it? This could be the only American outdoor cookbook you'll ever need.

          --Portsmouth Herald

          5 out of 5 stars terrific book.......2006-05-15

Have not by any means read, or tried, the whole book. But the section on equipment is very helpful. The entire book looks really very good, as are all of their books. This is one of the 2 weeks of the year in which it is nice, as opposed to cooking ON the sidewalk sort of heat where I live. So outdoors is great.

I was just a tad disappointed in the pizza and bread section. The reason was strictly me, I am sure. But I have been really into hand making bread in particular for about 30 years. I usually bake them on a pizza stone in the oven. I recently saw a wood fired pizza baking BBQ sort of thing at the barbeque store- and I have tried to convince my husband to build me one, for my now once-a-month loaf, for 15 years. No luck. So when they mentioned this device in equipment, I was hoping they would check it out and try some. Perhaps for the next book?

5 out of 5 stars Satisfy your hunger for the best.......2006-05-12

The Jamisons have done it again. If anyone knows grilling and bbq-ing and entertaining it's this amazing couple. This book is a great collection of classic recipes, many with an unsual twist. Not to mention the drinks, the rubs, marinades. Ilove to entertain out int he backyard, and I think it's the best book on outdoor entertaining perhaps ever. It's a party from the very first page. I can't recommend it enough.

5 out of 5 stars The Empowered Investor.......2003-05-13

WOW! Karoly said it all back in 1998. All about the corruption on Wall Street. The selling of investment research by brokerage firms to any listed company that wanted to move their stock.
He knew that this had been going on for years and that there was no way to stop it...ever.
The faster that investors get to this book the faster they will stop hemmoraging their assets into the financial suicide that the brokerage firms have set up for their customers.
Since the General accounting Office reported that only 0ne percent of all investors know that they can recover their losses, the firms translate that they have a 99% chance of continueing to get away with their fraud.
The Empowered Investor levels the Wall Street playing field for every investor.
Like every other reader I wish that I had read TEI a few years ago when Wall Street had only taken away about one half of my life's savings.
Wall Street has been trashing TEI since its publishing date.
Dearbrn the Publisher caught hell from the securities industry because they provide so many text books and testing material for stockbrokers. TEI is absolutely must reading for the survival of all investors.

5 out of 5 stars If I Knew Then what I learned from The Empowered Investor........2002-09-16

I thought that I was a pretty knowledgable investor until I began reading TEI...The Investor's Bill of Rights led me to the path of how to recover my losses...

I don't need a thousand words to say "Read The Empowered Investor or you are on the way to financial [ruin], period".

This expose' has been smeared by stockbrokers and their employers ever since it was published in 1998. Everything that you have only recently read about [recent "Wall Street" issues] is in TEI.

            ...

TEI is hard to find but it is in most libraries.

When you have read just the first two chapters you will also want to spread the word.

I plan to recover all of my losses with interest and will never trust the securities firms, brokers or their paid for research departments again.

TEI has taught me how to keep my recovered loss.

I thought that I was a pretty knowledgable investor until I began reading TEI. If I had read TEI only one year ago I would not have lost over $500,000. by thinking that my broker knew more about stocks than I did. His bogus title made me think he was a specially trained securities specialist. What a joke!

The Investor's Bill of Rights led me to the path of how to recover my losses. That's where I am now.

I don't need a thousand words to say "Read The Empowered Investor or you are on the way to financial suicide, period".

This expose' has been smeared by stockbrokers and their employers ever since it was published in 1998. Everything that you have only recently read about Enron, WorldCom and the corruption that is Wall Street, is in TEI.

How I envy those early readers.

            December 15, 2000

Robert E. Karoly, Author The Empowered Investor

I purchased The Empowered Investor, in late 1998, just after its initial publication. Unfortunately, I was so busy that my reading time became nonexistent. I continued to follow my broker's advice during the past year and have lost thousands of dollars. That loss made me think about your book again, which I have since read. Without a doubt , had I read The Empowered Investor, when I purchased it, I would not have experienced this serious loss to me and my family. Your book specifically tells investors not to take the actions that I did take and which caused by losses. It is hard for me to tell you this but had I read The Empowered Investor early on, I would not have blindly believed my broker and the firm that he works for. I could have prevented these losses. I want your readers to know how important it is to read your book, before they make their next investment. Every investor, I hope, can benefit from this terrible investment experienced. I now keep your book as a handy reference and use it whenever I hear a broker say one of those "red flag" words or phrases that you warn your readers about. Investors need more books to guard them against the pressures of some unethical stockbrokers. I will not make those mistakes again. Thank you for The Empowered Investor. I now plan to recover my losses through arbitration. Sincerely,

            W. Mattek FL

            5 out of 5 stars Investor's Bill of Rights.......1998-02-06

The Empowered Investor candidly reveals every investor's Bill of Rights for the very first time. Investors are shown how to "practice safe investing", how to recognize "rogue" stockbrokers before becoming involved with them. TEI is also a book about how to keep what you have. The mysteries of brokerage firms statements and concealed losses are clearly solved. Investors learn of the attitudes of brokerage firms toward their clients. They will learn the importance of Account Opening Agreements that every investor is required to sign. The research departments myth is unraveled for investors' protection. Just as important, TEI is a guide to self-discovery of accounts which have been abused by stockbrokers. Investors learn how their vulnerability increases in direct proportion to the degree of personal friendship that the broker has achieved with the investor. TEI is a complete guide to recovering losses, also. It is destined to become the ultimate investors' defensive guide to investing.

                  Book Description

Ethics in Technical Communication provides students and practitioners with a clear introduction to ethics--from Aristotle through the present--and suggests how these accounts can help technical communicators think through the kinds of dilemmas that inevitably arise in their working lives. Markel critiques current scholarship linking ethics and technical communication, then presents a flexible model for ethical decision-making that draws on the values of rights, justice, utility, and care. He then applies the model in examining the technical communicator's obligations in five critical areas: truthtelling, liability, multicultural communication, intellectual property, and codes of conduct. Markel first defines key terms, justifies the examination of ethics and technical communication, surveys the scholarly literature on the subject, and describes some of the basic assumptions underlying a serious study of ethics. Next, he presents concise overviews of Kantian rights and utilitarianism, the transitional ethical theories of the early 20th century, and several strands of contemporary ethical theory, including virtue ethics, the ethic of care, and postmodern ethics. He then explores his own approach, which calls for a fluid, non-hierarchical analysis conducted in an open-, non-coercive environment, as described in contemporary accounts of discourse ethics. This approach is used in the second part of the book, which focuses on truthtelling, liability, multiculturalism, intellectual property, and codes of conduct. In each of these chapters, Markel defines the problem, summarizes and critiques the scholarly literature, presents an approach to thinking about the problem sensitively and realistically, and concludes with a case and a response to it.

                      Book Description

1922. The paper selected for this volume was written for Harper's Magazine in 1865, while the facts were fresh in the author's mind. It contains a formal life of Lincoln. Noah Brooks met Abraham Lincoln in the Fifties and he had a better right than most men to claim that he knew Lincoln. Brooks was one of the few men about the President who never asked anything for himself, and Lincoln rewarded him by giving the best gift he had to offer - his friendship.

                        Book Description

This is a true story of drug addiction. If you are unaware of what can happen to a young person whose life was destroyed by becoming a drug addict, I hope you will read Susan’s life story. This book has great input from the addict, my daughter, on when she started, on how she started, and why she started using drugs. Her letters are insightful as are her confessions, never before told. If I can help even one child avoid the life my daughter has led, it will be worth the agony I have spent in reliving Susan’s life which has been destroyed by the use of drugs.
