Book Description
You are the same today as you'll be in five years, except for two things: the people you meet, and the books you read. The people you meet can't always be with you, but what you read in books can remain with you for a lifetime. How often we hear of individuals who began a new era in their lives with the reading of a single book. Some books can touch every important area of our lives and make us better people. This small volume contains three such books... three reknowned classics that could change your life dramatically.
"Acres of Diamonds," a perennial favorite, has a powerfully simple message which has helped millions of people recognize their potential for success. One of the most dynamic motivators of all time, Russell Conwell, promises that, if you will respond genuinely to the needs of humanity, you can find self-fulfillment "in your own back yard."
In "The Kingship of Self-Control," William George Jordan leads you expertly along the road to personal triumph. Challenging us to cast away those facets of ourselves which cause us to be less than what we should be, Jordan points the way to ultimate growth and happiness through self-discipline.
One of the most enlightening books ever written, "As A Man Thinketh" has been a favorite for decades. With insight and honesty, James Allen will inspire you to make your ideals become your reality. Having touched readers the world over, "As A Man Thinketh" is a book to be treasured.
Each of these classics was selected on the virtue of the timeless impact of its message. They are books to which the individual will return again and again, for the principles they set forth will be as relevant tomorrow as they were more than half a century ago.
A single reading will start you moving toward your goals. A second reading will keep you on the track until you reach those goals. And a third reading (perhaps years from now) will make you smile in recognition of the truths you were able to apply to your life.
Customer Reviews:
Great Collection.......2006-06-26
Great collection of success literature. I especially enjoyed Acres of Diamonds:
Russell Conwell's book, "Acres of Diamonds" was developed from a speech he delivered to church congregations over 5,000 times. The proceeds he earned from this speech are reputed to have given him a fortune, which he used to found Temple University in Philadelphia.
"Acres of Diamonds" is the story of a successful farmer in India named Al Hafed. Hafed is tempted by the allure of wealth and sells his farm to search the world for diamonds. Years later he dies penniless, having not found diamonds. However, back home the man who purchased Hafed's farm accidentally discovers a huge field of diamonds on Hafed's former land.
Conwell uses this story to illustrate that success often lies close at hand, if you are willing to open your eyes and mind to opportunity. Conwell further suggests that most people are "pygmies of their possible selves," rarely achieving the potential of their innate abilities or local opportunities. Conwell also discusses his basic philosophy of business and gives several rules, or suggestions, for budding entrepreneurs:
1. The seeds of fortune are close at hand. Stick with what you know, find your niche, and don't be swayed by the allure of "greener pastures."
2. Find out what people want, and fill that need. This sounds obvious, but many entrepreneurs start with a product or service, and then try to find a market for their product or service. Conwell advises finding the market first, then developing a product or service to meet that demand.
3. Make the best possible product and provide them to a large number of people.
"Acres of Diamonds" was first published in 1921. It is still valid today, and provides valuable lessons to anyone attempting to achieve financial success.
You may also want to read "Think and Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill and "The 17 Principles of Creating Wealth" by Phillip Collinsowrth.
Book Description
People in the early stages of alcoholism recovery are often sugar-addicted and nutritionally deficient. Trained chef and recovering alcoholic Liz Scott tackles these issues head on in a cookbook that pursues lifelong sobriety through building a healthy lifestyle around food.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful resource for recovery.......2007-07-23
I came across this book at the library and got it to use for my husband, who is in recovery. It is more than a cookbook, it is a recovery resource! The nutritional information, and easy-to-read descriptions of recipes and ingredients - mushrooms, olives, and lettuces, for example - are useful for anyone wanting to be a better cook. Like the other reviewer, I made the pork tenderloin with cumin (although I'd forgotten to get apples and used onions instead!), and with a couple of sides, my husband thought it one of the best meals I'd ever made! I came to Amazon to buy the book so I won't have to keep checking it out at the library - I don't want to be without it.
Therapist Recommends "The Sober Kitchen".......2005-03-08
Liz Scott was a professional chef when she stopped drinking. She worried how she could continue to work when her relationship with alcohol had changed so drastically. She found a way to continue cooking professionally without using alcohol OR sacrificing gourmet excellence or exquisite taste. I found Liz Scott's "The Sober Kitchen" when looking for a gift for a sober friend. I ended up buying a copy for myself after reading the great recipes and the sober self-care explanations that are so sensible, whether one is in recovery or just living life on its own terms, no easy feat today. I have drawn upon Ms. Scott's wisdom in my daily work with recovering men and women and have recommended her book to many people. I commend Ms. Scott for sharing her own story in the hope that others will be helped. Her "be-good-to-yourself, you've-been-through-a-lot" attitude towards preparing and enjoying food could benefit virtually anyone, not just the newly sober. Check it out!
A Tremendous Service.......2003-10-10
Liz Scott has done a tremendous service to those recovering from substance abuse and others who choose to cook without alcohol
Cookbooks and magazines typically give scant attention, if any, to the needs of those who forgo alcohol in cooking. Stock or water is often recommended as a substitute, despite lacking whatever flavor the wine, beer, or sherry called for in the recipe would contribute, and the results are what you'd expect: flat, dull, or off-putting.
Scott's approach to substitution is more nuanced. By considering the flavors the alcohol would contribute and the role it plays in the dish, she arrives at substitutes that truly work. Where wine plays a supporting role, as in a pan sauce, for instance, she recreates its fruitiness and acidity with a mixture of unsweetened grape juice and wine vinegar. Where the alcohol stars, she reworks the recipe entirely, like the boeuf bourguignon where she uses currant jelly to give depth of flavor and body to the sauce.
I bought the book for the discussion of substitution after I heard Scott interviewed on the radio, but I've found that it offers much more. She provides extensive information on nutrition and practical suggestions on eating better, both in early recovery and over the long haul, by eating more fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes, and, without faddishness, by starting to pay attention to food's glycemic index. I was inspired to try roasted soybeans for the first time in a "road to recovery" trail mix with chocolate chips that I liked very much.
The other recipes I've tried--iced herbal tea, granola; a leek and potato soup; pan-fried steak; a roasted pork tenderloin with cumin and apples that took only ten minutes of prep--have been uniformly good: clearly written, easy to prepare, and great-tasting.
The book is structured according to stages of early, established, and long-term recovery, and it allows Scott to be supportive and even gentle-having that ice cream probably won't kill you-while aspiring to continuous improvement. For those in AA, her recommendations about triggers, cravings, HALT, fellowship, and other concepts are mainstream program. Although stricter than some might feel necessary-she tossed out her corkscrew and won't use alcohol-based vanilla extract-her suggestions will help keep you safe.
I recommend the book highly for anyone in recovery who likes to cook, or for that matter, is just interested in taking better care of oneself.
Customer Reviews:
entertaining read.......2006-07-24
"futures markets run on a potent mixture of adrenalin fear and smarts...where 10% take home 90% of the winnings..."
Kroll doesn't mention that his role model often quoted, Jesse Livermore went bankrupt 3 times, and killed himself.
And every strategy that I've tried in this book has never worked (for me ). This book is cursed!!!
Entertaining read though.
The Best!.......2005-12-29
This is, in my humble opinion, the best book ever written on futures "investing". Although dated (1987) the lessons in the book ring true in the 21st century. Kroll touches many issues, but the gravamen of the book is from the standpoint of long-term trend following. Kroll appears more of a discretionary trader (as opposed to systems traders such as John Henry, Ed Seykota, and others covered in books such as Covel's Trend Following) and although I cannot say that it will make you rich overnight, this book will help you lose less on the road to futures mastery. Sadly, this book is out-of-print, but luckily there are many copies available on the secondary market. I even own two copies--it's that good!
The best trading book so far........2000-02-10
This is one of the best book on trading. I've read it for three times and I can say that I will read it again.
Kroll talk about how the market discount news, how everyone has his own trading system, and also not forgeting the golden rule of cutting your losses short and letting your profit run.
In short, if you have time for only one book on trading, this will be the one.
Book Description
“Bernstein has become a guru to a peculiarly ’90s group: well-educated, Internet-powered people intent on investing well—and with minimal ‘help’ from professional Wall Street.”--Robert Barker, BusinessWeek
William Bernstein is one of today’s most unlikely financial heroes. A practicing neurologist, he used his self-taught investment knowledge and research to build a popular investor’s website. Now, in the plain-spoken The Intelligent Asset Allocator, he shows independent investors how to build a diversified portfolio—without the help of a financial advisor. A breath of fresh air for investors tired of overly technical investment tomes, this book will help investors:
• Learn the risk/reward characteristics of various investment types
• Understand and apply portfolio theory for an improved risk/reward ratio
• Sharpen their focus, and take control of their investment programs William Bernstein (North Bend, OR) runs a website—www.efficientfrontier.com—known for its quarterly journal of asset allocation and portfolio theory, Efficient Frontier.
Customer Reviews:
A classic book on investing.......2007-07-07
Anyone who is serious about investing in marketable securities should read this book and keep it handy as a reference guide. The author is a brillant student of the market and passive investing techniques. All of the supporting data in the book has been developed by the author and his assistant. I would recommend this book for the investor.
Another book for the beginner and the experienced invesror as well How to Make Money in the Stock Market-Buy 2,500 Different Stocks-Pay no Commission
Jewel for long term contrarian investing from a US perspective.......2007-04-19
This book is for investors with a time scale of decades. So think about saving for a comfortable retirement. It argues from a point of view of an US American investor (types of asset classes and their behavior in time, all in US dollars, US tax laws, US investing instruments) but the described principles are general and also well suited for residents of other countries.
Bernstein has the ability of a very clear and down to the earth way of thinking. Even more important his prose is as clear as his thoughts. He takes you by the hand and leads you through quite difficult terrain. But as long as you hold his hand everything is clear and makes a simple impression.
His advice is solid and can be employed easily in practical investing. He even has advice for somebody with only thirty minutes of time for investments a year (Put it into the four asset types: domestic small caps, domestic large caps, foreign stocks and bonds of up to five years of duration. Split your assets in equal proportion to those types. Try to aggressively save fees maybe with Vanguard funds. Adjust the portions of those four asset types once a year to their original proportions.) Clearly this is good advice. If you read this book you also learn a lot of why this is effective. But if you do not know more than this advice: Will you follow it through thick and thin? Just imagine one asset type gets out of favor and loses a lot of value for a few years in a row. Then you have to pour yearly a lot of fresh and good money in exactly that asset type (Bernstein is a moderate contrarian). It is hard to believe that anyone has that strength without a well developed own opinion on that matter. Yes it is exactly the opposite of a stop loss. It is buy more of the losing types and sell the winning ones. The hope is to buy low and sell high.
So enjoy the ease of reading and Bernstein's brilliant simplicity, but don't be fooled by it. You will have to work hard to gain your own standpoint. And you have to invest actual money for a few years to get to know yourself.
For further reading this book has an excellent bibliography and the author runs a great website. I highly do recommend this book.
Fianance........2007-04-01
This is a great book. Don't make it your 1st finance book, but a great follow up to a "Random walk down Wall Street"
Clearly explains the theory, its background, and use........2007-03-26
This is one of 3 books that I have on the subject .... and it complements those books each of which has its own particular bias.
The book is well worth buying, reading (with a few different color highlighters), and keeping it on the shelf for reference (.. in other words to keep one going back onto "track").
There is a bias towards using index funds; and this bias does use all the conventional wisdom -- wisdom that everyone else will be trying to employ. Therefore, there is a lack of ways to "jump-start" a portfolio -- ways that must be obtained from other books and newsletters.
Efficient Frontier - Now I understand.......2007-01-31
This book can "turn on the lightbulb" for all types about what the Efficient Frontier really means! This is the best investment book I have read that attempts to focus the individual on risk - the most important facet of investing.

not bad but not great either........2007-08-06
This book provides a cook book approach to evaluating stocks. The concept is good and the approach to applying the concept also good. The main problem with the book is that I do not believe it was edited. There are several glaring errors in the text and it is not very well written either. That being said, it still is worth buying for the concepts that the books presents. What the book really needed was a really good editor to tune it up.
Traditional market analysis.......2007-07-12
This book covers adequately the task of uncovering underpriced and overpriced stocks. Unfortunately the market has pretty well already made the analysis and current market prices reflect the collective judgement of those involved.
Piscaqua Research in a study covering the period 1987-96 found that only 10 out of 145 major pension funds, or just seven percent, out performed a portfolio consisting of a simple 60%/40% mix of the S&P 500 index and the Lehman Bond index respectively.
Or is it logical I ask for you to believe that you can predict which actively managed funds will out perform, or are you overconfident of your skills? If you are trying to find the great fund managers who will out perform in the future ask yourself: what am I going to do differently in terms of identifying the future winning fund managers, than did the pension plans and their advisors? And if you are not going to something different what logic is there in playing a game at which others with superior resources have consistently failed?
If you a really serious in finding an investment technique that will provide you with reasonable return with less risk I suggest the following little book. This is a little book that I have written and contains the essential of how to invest. Just click on the title to find the book. How to Make Money in the Stock Market-Buy 2,500 Different Stocks-Pay no Commission
Intro to Stock Investing.......2007-06-27
I enjoyed the book very much. It was great at establishing sound investment advice. After reading the book, & doing other research I decided to leave it to the professionals. Now I have a better idea how they come to their decisions.
The Best Book On Stocks I have Read So Far!.......2007-04-06
This is certainly the best book on investing in stocks for the individual that I have read so far. Everything is logically thought out and very clearly explained. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to get into individual stock investing who would like to make educated and sensible decisions that really pay off. Reading it has taken me from a complete newbie to having a competent understanding of how the stock market works with an intelligent, easy to follow system for picking successful companies that beat the market with minimal risk. This book is definitely everything it claims to be and a worthwhile investment.
This book does the impossible.......2007-03-05
The author does a superb job of shedding light on a complex subject in a way that's immediately accessible to beginners. He lays out the material clearly, writing in plain English to the extent possible, neatly billboarding the points he wishes to make. Then he makes his points efficiently and drives them home with (welcome) repetition, striking the right balance between simplicity and nuance. Wise investing still takes work -- there's no easy way around that -- but this book details a method that any reasonably competent person may follow. I will refer to it often. Wish it had come out 20 years earlier!

Book Description
Sensible Investing is a different kind of investment book that exposes the realities so often obscured by investment media hype. It explains why the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Government Accounting Office (GAO) and the Certified Financial Planners (CFP) Board of Standards all want advisers to give their clients more meaningful disclosure information and why some advisers are up-in-arms about it. Sensible Investing describes fundamental differences between the traditional "growth/value" approach to asset allocation and the more sensible "sector allocation" approach. It explains how emotions play a significant role in essentially every investor's decision-making. It expalins the basics of tax-efficient investing and the importance of distribution planning.

Book Description
During the 1980s, organizational theorists and managers alike rediscovered the role that values play in organizational life and became concerned about the apparent lack of values that underlie unethical organizational behavior. This volume examines the complex interrelationships among values, ethics, and organizational decision making. It focuses on communication, because it is through discourse that people develop their own moral codes, organizations develop and inculcate core values and ethical precepts, and incongruities within and between value sets are negotiated. Each essay also deals with modes of making decisions.

Book Description
First published in 1959 to mark the 150th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth, Louis A. Warren's classic study of Lincoln's formative years in Indiana tracks his growth from awkward boy to serious young man poised on the brink of a brilliant career. Here are fascinating glimpses of Lincoln's family life, the people he knew, the places he visited, his physical development, and the tragedies he suffered. Perhaps most revealing is Warren's treatmnet of Lincoln's education, both in the schools he briefly attended and in the books he read, and the influence of Thomas Lincoln in forming the character of his son.

Lincoln the Indiana pioneer.......2007-08-24
For many years this was the standard account of Lincoln's passage from childhood into teenage years and the verge of adulthood. Although the parts devoted to Lincoln may be superceded by a later treatment, Warren's volume contains many details of pioneer Indiana that aren't collected together elsewhere.

Excellent Book.......2006-09-07
Because of my illness I haven't been able to absorb or read to many books in years. I couldn't put it down. I read the entire book and felt alot better. This book points out how many people there truly are with thyroid problems. I have thryoid cancer and should have received better support in general & advice from the medical profession. This book gives me the will to do what I want about my own health. Thank you
A Patient's Best Friend.......2004-11-29
My doctor recommended this book to me when I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer recently. It's been a godsend! It explained things to me in terms that are easy to read and understand. I really appreciated that it was written by someone who's also been through thyroid cancer. I felt like a friend was helping me through the process of my treatment. I also really trust the information in it because the medical advisor for this book, Dr. Ain, is a name I recognize, who gives out amazing advice on the thyroid cancer Yahoo listserve.
An excellent book.......2003-11-04
I was diagnosed with thryoid cancer 3 years ago. I wish I'd had this book then! Rosenthal explains everything so clearly! I feel so empowered with this book. It covers everything you need to know about your cancer and especially all about follow-up scans. I found this chapter the most useful for me because it's a very confusing subject. This book answered all my questions and concerns about withdrawl scanning. Everyone with thryoid cancer should have this book. I have her other thyroid books, and they're all really well-written and informative, but if you have thyroid cancer, you need this book especially.

In fact, they outlive all other nationalities. Their longevity is a direct result of their daily intake of omega3 rich fish oils. The American Heart Association recommends omega3 fatty acids to help prevent cardiovascular disease and stroke. Omega3s inhibit plaque and blood clots and dramatically improve cholesterol levels. They also increase brain function by promoting neurotransmission in the brain. With research from over 20 leading medical and scientific journals, Drs. Garry Gordon and Herb JoinerBey reveal how the good fats found in omega3s from fish and pharmaceuticalgrade supplements are essential to maintaining optimum health. The only way your body can get these vital essential fatty acids is through proper nutrition and supplementation. The Omega3 Miracle shows you how. Clinical and scientific studies in both Europe and the U.S. show that omega3 fatty acids benefit a wide range of conditions including: Cardiovascular Disease High Cholesterol Lowering Triglycerides High Blood Pressure Arthritis Diabetes Bipolar Disorder ADHD Chronic Inflammation Cancer This is your definitive guide on how to maximize your health and longevity with omega3.

Fish Oil or Snake Oil? Author is a Complete Fake!.......2006-08-04
The author of this book took an article about Scandinavians and longevity from the medical literature, (research from REAL physicians) and decided he could use it to make lots of money by selling his bottled "Omega-3 Miracle". The medical literature does NOT in any way support any claims about the bottled stuff he is selling. Omega 3 fatty acids IN FISH have been proven to increase longevity. There are NO medical studies on Mr. Gorden's product. The author is NOT an MD, though he uses the title in his name. He is not a cardiologist. He is not a practicing radiologist and, despite the bio, he can not be located anywhere as a practicing Osteopathic doctor either. He is a complete hoax! So eat healthy foods, live a healthy life style and save your money - don't fork over your hard-earned cash to a guy who lies about his background. Love the photo on the cover of him with a stethoscope around his neck - almost makes you think the guy has a medical background.
I Don't Know: This Book Could be Only 90% True.......2006-07-05
I am not purchasing ISLANDIC fish oil. The prices are too high. I suspect that this Dr. Gordon wishes to make additional profits by convincing readers to purchase only from this source - from his own web site. I believe this because other respectible authors make similar claims for fish oil using non-Islandic sources.
Except for this detail, I have placed a large portion of my hopes for lower disease risk, with greater longivity, on the basic principles presented in Dr. Gordon'a books.
Don't trust this guy.......2006-05-26
This book is not very good the same information can be found in five minutes on the internet. Any Dr. who uses an honorary degree after his name is suspect. Dr. Garry Gordon does not hold a valid MD degree, he is a DO and should only use that degree after his name. Although a DO deegree is an equivalent medical degree, the fact that he uses a fake MD degree shows his insecurity about his credentials. Further, his is a strong proponent of chelation therapy which is a fraudulent medical practice. He is a radiologist not a heart specialist as the commercial states.
The best book on omega-3 I've found.......2005-09-13
As a medical doctor and researcher I have to say that this is clearly the finest work to date (in form that's understandable to the lay person) regarding the many health benefits of fish oil. You can tell that Dr. Gordon is certainly one of the most knowledgeable individuals studying omega-3 today and it's relationship to heart disease prevention and relief of arthritis pain, among the many other benefits. The information is presented in an organized fashion and it's an enjoyable read as well. I strongly recommend that anyone interested in extending their life read this book.

Customer Reviews:
A WELL WRITTEN WORK. QUITE USEFUL.......2007-03-10
The author has used various animal characters to discuss impact of breat cancer that stricks the entire family, not just the victim. This one is written for the younger child and is an excellent tool to open and continue discussion with your children concerning this rather serious subject. The book is written with great sensitivity, yet answers hard to answer questions of a level that most young onces can understand. It is yet another great too. Recommend this one highly.
Good book to foster discussion.......2004-11-29
This book is written from the perspective of the kids. It's not the first book to get for a child under age 6 to explain cancer, but it's a good one for the elementary school aged child to open up discussion. My daughter is a kindergartener and does like to occasionally read this one together, but prefers the ones for younger kids. (Like Sammy's Mommy Has Cancer and Tickles Tabitha's Cancer-tankerous Mommy.) I do recommend this for the 1st to 5th grade age group though. It does use the perspective of many different kids of different ages.
An Important Book.......2002-01-23
I saw the author on the Today Show, and bought this because I know a family going through this difficulty. The book touches on many issues, but is really very positive. Good for bringing up discussion, especially for children who may be too frightened to share their feelings.

Friends.......2004-09-07
Dawn and Sunny used to be best friends. Now they're not because Sunny's mom has cancer and is gonna die. So Sunny has had a lot of trouble and has had been hanging out with the wrong crowd. So maybe now that Sunny's mom is really sick they can become friends again. Sunny is starting to be cool with Dawn because she knows that Dawn is a really good friend to her. This is a great book.
I liked the book but not Dawn.......2003-01-28
When I read this book I was mad after reading Sunny's diaries and about how Dawn treated Sunny. I used to like Dawn but not now; she has this holier than thou attitude that is more annoying than anything. She had no business making judgments about Sunny's behavior. Dawn is a girl who thinks she's "it" (NOT!) She has no business lecturing Sunny and telling her how to live her life. Dawn is far from perfect. She thinks everyone else is wrong and she's right.
A Great book for kids and has all the emotions.......2002-08-03
This book is interestiing and is very sad. It really could explain real life decisions. Heres a summery of it. Ok so dawn and sunny has stopped talking because sunny has been very moody latley and is pushing away all her friends but its only soon that dawn relizes the situation sunnys mother is in and fell that she misses her but is till really mad at her. This bnook is great and it has much much more interesting twists but ur gonna have to read about those by youself.
Book Description
When Runt's mother dies, he’s sent to live with his older sister Helen, whom he hasn’t seen in years, not since she ran away. Avoiding the dreary trailer he now shares with Helen and her creepy boyfriend Cole, Runt spends his days rambling around his new town, especially the local cemetery. There he meets Mitch, a precocious boy in a wheelchair who’s battling cancer. The two lonely boys become fast friends, but as their friendship deepens, each faces a powerful crisis. As Runt and Mitch struggle with the harsh realities of poverty, abuse, and illness, each looks to the other for comfort and courage. Then, Helen’s problems complicate things even further. Can Runt help them both, and himself, too? The empathy, insight, and finely drawn characters seen in V. M. Caldwell’s first two novels are in full view in this moving story of a young boy’s attempts to create a better life for himself and those around him.

Book Description
Radiotherapy continues to change and develop rapidly. Most clinical oncologists have a wide clinical practice and find it difficult to keep abreast of the many new developments in treatment methods. Current Radiation Oncology provides a state-of-the-art review of important areas where change has recently occurred and areas of likely development in the near future. Each chapter provides a provocative account of the topic and places the subject matter in the general context of more established techniques. Together with Volume 1 and Volume 2, this book provides a comprehensive review of current practice in radiotherapy.
