Computing Skills for Economists

Today's students are expected to use computers and familiarise themselves with word-processing and spreadsheet packages in their work. They are also expected to be able to use the Internet for e-mail and accessing information on the Web. In fact, some lecturers use the Web to provide course notes or even deliver parts of the course interactively. Most available computer books are too general and often miss out features that would be particularly helpful to economists. In fact, they don't show how such tools can be used in economics.

This textbook fills a need for a computing and IT book aimed specifically at undergraduate economics students. It bridges the gap between IT literacy and the use of hardware, software and other resources in learning and doing economics. The main focus is on the tools and the resources that are particularly relevant to economists with examples of their use and suggestions of how to apply and exploit them in applications in economics.

A quick read...if you dont put it off until later........2007-08-18

I started reading this book 4 months ago, but just finished it last week. For a book so small that doesn't say much.

This book delivers on humor and very practical advice, but for me it just seemed to say things I already knew such as keeping a to-do list that breaks major tasks into mini-tasks. To be fair, there was other advice, but nothing that just made me sit up and transform my behavior.

Having said that, I don't think it is a bad book and it wasn't unpleasant to read, but I really expected more. I chose a 3-star rating because while I felt better for a day or two after reading it, I didn't turn on that internal "switch".

Unfortunately I have not read some of the other popular titles, so I have nothing I can recommend in place of this book - please keep that in mind when reading this review.

Practical, easy tips for overcoming procrastination.......2007-01-12

There are a number of procrastination books on the market, but this is by far the best for its simple solutions and practical insights. Like other books on the subject, the author deals with the psychological aspects of procrastination, but unlike other books, she keeps it simple, using real-life stories and examples. It Hit the Nail on the Head.......2007-01-05

As a classic procrastinator and owner of my own business, I can say that Ms. Emmett's book was wonderfully accurate in assessing my weaknesses. Her methods for breaking the habit of procrastination are good ones which are easily applied. The fact that she offers several different methods make the trial and error process much less painful. I've applied her rules to my business and home life with success. I'm not cured altogether, but this book has me on the right track.

Part of the story.......2006-11-21

I mainly listened to the audio tapes of this book, although I also own the paperback. Emmett's book is helpful in a number of ways. She shows you many aspects of the mindset you will need to overcome procrastination. However, there came a point where this book could take me no further in my battle against procrastination. That's when I turned to the Wikipedia article on procrastination, and perhaps more importantly, the Wikibook on Overcoming Procrastination. Starting with those resources, I launched into my own trip of self-discovery which has led to a breakthrough in my procrastination. Eventually, you need to deeply understand who you are, your life up to this point, and why it is in your best interest not to procrastinate. Anyway, this is my experience.

This is a great little book for anyone who loves smoothies (or haven't discovered their passion for them). The book is really cute as well, all black (of course), with a pink label that has the title...pretty chic. I got this in addition to the Little Black Book of Cocktails, which is so fun as well (there's also one for BBQ).

Mr. Walker is clear and concise in his depiction of how the options markets work. He details various strategies and makes options investing understandable to those new to it.

In my 11 years as a futures investor, broker, and author, I have never seen someone with as much grasp of options investing as Mr.Walker and have the capability to explain it.

an epic saga of war-torn 17th century Cornwall..........2004-12-04

The King's General is a product of Daphne Du Maurier's love of her native Cornwall, English history, and her superior writing capabilities. She does an excellent job of capturing the feel of 17th century Cornwall in the midst of England's civil war. Even someone like myself with no interest in this particular subject matter found it all to be very readable.

I suppose my only quibble with The King's General has to do with its too many melodramatic episodes. The main element of the story involves two Cornwall families with interwoven romances, feuds, and family traumas. While certainly some of the romantic scenes are, well, romantic. But just as often the scenes seem almost comically contrived. Lots of male and female egos going amuck. At times The King's General felt like a gothic romance novel, ... which probably isn't what the author intended.

Bottom line: despite some over-the-top scenes The King's General is a very worthy read.

When I first read it, I knew it was not your average Barbie Doll Love Story. Why? Because Gartred, the amazing beauty, was far from beautiful on the inside. And the heroine, Honor, was crippled on her wedding day, just before getting married. She wasn't perfect either, but like she said, she got over her new body, it didn't happen over days, or months, but years. And during that time, the man she loved and was to wed, wed another, for money. She wasn't a saint, she felt jealous and happy that the marriage wasn't well. But it was so real and emotional, and the story was written in first-person giving honest and harsh emotions and understanding to why she loved such a despicable man as Richard Grenvile.

Bittersweet and unforgettable.......2001-08-24

This is a bittersweet love story set against the backdrop of the English civil war... I first read this about 20 years ago. Though I was frustrated with the lack of detail, I was so enthralled by the main characters. I ordered it used from Amazon and re-read it yesterday. I was still enthralled and did not want it to end. I re-read passages from it immediately after I finished!

Elegant and heartbreaking.......2001-01-30

"The King's General" is a beautiful novel, lovingly written by an author who knows what she's presenting. Set in Cornwall (a trademark of the author), it encompasses the era of the English Civil War by telling the tale through the eyes of Honor Harris, one of fictions's most original heroines.

This book was spring water after all of the low grade vintage purple prose I have read lately. Honor is neither beautiful nor rich, but she has strength, gentleness, practicality and wit, all of which serve her better than beauty or money ever could. Her lover, Sir Richard Grenville, is a handsome and proud man who relies on her love and loyalty to get him through the trying times he faces as the commander of Charles I's forces in the West, hence the title.

What makes this story so juicy is its spareness. The prose is delicious in its lack of details, much the same as Larry McMurtry's "Lonesome Dove" or Jennifer Robeson's "Lady of the Forest" are written. Details are revealed through conversation which might normally be told through description if du Maurier were not so deft with her pen. There is mystery, romance, adventure and comedy within the covers, but it is relayed in such a way as to add to the main story, the sure mark of an author with taste and the ability to draw lifelike characters. And there are such characters to be had: Honor, who is strong and gentle at the same time; Richard, reckless and wild; Gartred, beautiful and calculating; Richard's son Dick, sickly and outcast; and the house of secrets called Menabilly, alone and desolate upon the moor.

I came across this book wholly by chance. It is a 1948 paperback that is falling apart, the pages brittle and dog-eared. It is my sincere hope that I will be able to find the story again in a more durable format, but until such time I shall read this lovely novel until it is completely destroyed.

I highly recommend "Jamaica Inn" and "Frenchman's Creek" as companion novels to this one. Du Maurier's history-based novels have stood the test of time as classics and I am proud to give this one such a high rating.

Peter Sammartino writes an eloquent, concise view of the Shakespearean authorship question and the case for Edward DeVere, the 17th Earl of Oxford. I began my investigation into the authorship question here and I have now read virtually every book on the subject. This is a must read for all those interested in obtaining deeper meaning from the plays and the Sonnets. Highly recommended.

Handy reference for newcomers to the period.......2003-06-12

As one can tell from the publisher?s descriptions and Booknews comments (above) this compilation of biographical sketches includes quite a broad range of ?characters? from Shakespeare?s England. It is a handy reference, especially to the newcomer to this period, to obtain *a little* more depth of knowledge into lives one may hear referenced while reading, say, Shakespeare studies. The best-targeted audience is the general lay public or undergraduates. English majors will soon become disappointed how the sketches selectively scratch the surface: the authors (editors, nearly) collect information from secondary/ tertiary sources, and sometimes round out entries with such information as who married whom how soon after their spouse?s death (i.e., occasionally higher on intrigue than substance). A dictionary of 700 entries obviously cannot explore the controversies of a life, but the Palmers at least strive to alert us to prominent issues therein.

Admirably, the secondary sources on which they draw are responsibly acknowledged at the end of each entry and favor highly appropriate selections such as E. K. Chambers, Eccles, Schoenbaum, McKerrow, and the Dictionary of National Biography. Some changes are said to have been made since the original (1981) edition, but for a book only striving for such global summaries of each life can probably safely be bought in the earlier edition if you wish to save by selecting a used copy.

History through the eyes of a child has never been so beautifully told. Ms. Porter remembers detail and allows us to eavesdrop on the intimate exchanges she enjoyed with the great man in her life, her grandfather Vili Racz. He is ever-present in this story of one family in the turmoil that was Hungary in the 1940s and '50s. But the tale reaches much farther back, illuminating corners of Eastern European history too long forgotten. Savour this book for it shows how powerful the simple stories that comprise our collective past can be.
