    Book Description

Italy, with world's sixth largest industrial economy, remains in the midst of a process of political and economic transformation. The Italian government continues on a path of budget austerity and privatization, reducing its significant role in the economy. As this rationalization of the economy moves forward, Italy should offer even more opportunities for U.S. firms, both as a destination for exports and a point for investment.

The Italian market is mature and highly competitive, demanding high quality products and services. The market is very open to U.S. items, particularly innovative and niche market products, services and technologies. European Union (EU) changes to the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and Italy's implementation of EU harmonized phytosanitary and sanitary regulations should offer fresh opportunities for U.S. agricultural exports. For example, the continued move toward a fully integrated single European market should aid U.S. high value, convenience, and health food products. The realignment of the distribution sector toward larger chains and more competitive pricing should also aid U.S. exports.

Italy's participation in the "euro" will simplify trade for those companies exporting to several EU countries. It also creates opportunities for U.S. companies with technologies and services that can assist Italian firms compete in the more integrated European market. However, these changes also will benefit European competitors who are increasing their presence in the Italian market through mergers and joint ventures with Italian firms. U.S. companies, already well known for innovation, will have to continue to emphasize the quality of their products as well as focus on price and service to maintain or develop their market share. The U.S. exporter also should be aware that to be successful in Italy they need to establish linkages with Italian representatives or partners and be flexible in their approach to this market.

      Book Description

As a forward for the great Tar Heel teams of the late '60s and early '70s, David Chadwick had a first-hand view of legendary coach Dean Smith's winning formula on the court. In The 12 Leadership Principles of Dean Smith, Chadwick applies Smith's people-first methods for achieving individual success within a team framework to the business world, the community, the family, and beyond.

Chadwick also draws from the recollections of Mike Krzyzewski, Michael Jordan, Rick Pitino, and many others, revealing the profound influence Smith has had upon those who know him.

4 out of 5 stars Adds focus to good leadership.......2000-04-01

Dean Smith was the coach of the University of North Carolina/ Chapel Hill Basketball team for 36 years. This book was written by David Chadwick, one of his former players who is currently the Pastor of a large Church. He reflects upon his university experience with Coach Smith as well as the lifelong impact that experience has brought him. He adds the reflections and residual affection of many other UNC basketball alumni, some now quite famous like Michael Jordan, to emphasis how these particular 12 principles were operationalized though this man and this sport. The 12 principles are truly worth examining and applying in a universal way. I think it is clear that Dean Smith paid great tribute with the expression of his talents and skills, which contributed beyond an athletic program. The opportunity is presented to expand these into a formulation of leadership objectives that blend healthy values, long term vision and deep personal meaning. If you are not a basketball fan then the text could be somewhat tedious when wading through the illustrations. That notwithstanding, it is still relatively easy to enjoy the value of these principles and compare them with how you may be thinking, feeling or envisioning yourself and your management approach. This book can be made a study or a quick read, either way it is worth the time.

      2 out of 5 stars The 4 Corners Disappoints.......2000-01-29

Disappointed in the effort. Didn't know whether I was reading a management theory book or "Pastoral Theory For Carolina Basketball Fanatics", Dean was almost to good to be a real person and Chadwick mixed too much of his pastorial experiences into the book so that you couldn't translate it to "us" in our work environments. As a Dean fan for over 40 years, a true role model, I just had a hard time trying to get to the last page. Very disappointing for the most part, even though I practice some of his principals even without reading the book, I really didn't find as much insight as I had expected. Mr. Chadwick needs to stick to the pulpit and not give up his Sunday job just yet!

3 out of 5 stars He is the greatest coach of all time, but..........1999-11-27

This book definitely deifies Dean Smith. The fact that it's written by a preacher may have something to do with that. It's a fine book, it's just that you get the feeling that you can't really take anything in it seriously because the book is so obviously biased. The writing is not the best, but the stories are touching and definitely showcase Smith's leadership talents.

5 out of 5 stars A logical guide for leaders and followers alike........1999-10-11

In just over 200 pages,David Chadwick has presented a useful and interesting "road map" useful to leaders and to followers alike.

A few of the keywords Chadwick expounded on with logical meanings are, loyalty, honesty, family, team, vision, humility ,change, practice and mentoring.

David Chadwick has skillfully woven many of Dean Smith's unique leadership practices and philosophies along with Chadwick's personal experiences in a manner that can help a leader lead with confidence and a follower follow with effectiveness. He also presented it in a manner that the reader could read with enjoyment.

          Book Description

Warning: This is a no-holds-barred book of decadence. Do you keep unsalted butter in your freezer? Not afraid of a little saturated fat? Then indulge -- if you dare!

The recipes in Jeremy Jackson's Desserts That Have Killed Better Men Than Me pack a one-two butter-and-sugar punch. Have a lick of Snice Cream (that's Fresh Snow Ice Cream) or slurp down a Banana Smoothie. Chomp on Chocolate-Dipped Ranger Cookies or dive into a Chocolate Sinkhole. Just be prepared to defend your bounty. These desserts are so delicious that a food fight might start over the last piece of cake!

Don't be fooled by the simple ingredients and easy-to-follow directions. Jeremy's desserts are not to be taken lightly. They're not for the faint of heart -- or stomach. Danger lurks beneath that delectable layer of Chocolate Ganache. So suit up in a pair of elastic waist pants, arm yourself with a fork and a giant glass of milk, and prepare for battle.

If you can survive Three-Lemon Cheesecake and My School Lunch Cream Puffs, you can probably handle the Peach Pie with Almond Crumb Topping. Polish that off and you just might be ready for the Hanging-Crust Rhubarb Cobbler.

In the world of desserts, there is no room for mediocrity. Desserts That Have Killed Better Men Than Me has no filler or predictable, so-so recipes (and absolutely no almond bark!), just good, honest, and deadly delicious ones -- with plenty of heavy cream.

          5 out of 5 stars Par-ty, par-ty, par-ty . . ........2005-09-12

I love this little book! Who can resist the title? It's such fun to read and the results are fantastically good--it's like cooking with a friend who is a lot of fun and doesn't let you down in any way! The recipes are simple and delicious and, incidentally, withstand substitutions well: peaches instead of raspberries for the Raspberry Clafouti, English breakfast tea instead of Earl Grey for the Earl Grey Applesauce, lemon juice & zest for orange in the Slow-Roasted Pinapple Sauce. Cook one recipe everyday and invite your friends over--par-ty, par-ty, par-ty...!

5 out of 5 stars Your wife will love you for these treats..........2004-07-11

I saw an article in our local Iowa newspaper which featured this book and a couple of the recipes. The title piqued my curiosity, so I bought it. To date, I have made four of the desserts contained therein. None are particularly difficult or time consuming. The instructions are written in novel-like prose and are easy to follow. The flavors in the finished products range from brain-melting (Chocolate Sinkholes) to delightfully sublime (Earl Grey Applesauce). Amaze your family and friends, or create the perfect conclusion to a romantic meal with your spouse at home while the kids are away at Grandma's for the weekend.

          5 out of 5 stars So -- *Is* fruit a dessert. . . ?.......2004-06-08

Chocolate-Dipped Ranger Cookies? Three-Lemon Cheesecake? Yikes! Rather than, as he says, produce a book with 1,000 recipes, of which only a couple of hundred are slightly better than average, Jackson, author of _The Cornbread Book,_ decided to limit himself to 60-odd lethel desserts, all of which are fantastic. Some of these are original (like Black Walnut and Dried Blueberry Tart, which is new to me, anyway, and which is now on my to-do list), some are variations on old standbys (like banana smoothies, or clafouti with raspberries instead of cherries), but all of them are at least interesting. The style is light and chatty but always informational, and there are some serious droolers in this little volume -- but I wish there were pictures.

5 out of 5 stars Great Little Book of Largely Original, Easy Desserts.......2004-05-05

This little book by Jeremy Jackson is not quite perfect, but it's close.

Jackson is a rare male culinary writer specializing on desserts who, unlike David Libovitz or Wayne Harley Brachman, is not a professional pastry chef. Not only does he simply write about dessert recipes, but he claims to write, in this book at least, exclusively about original recipes.

The story of how this book came about makes perfect sense to anyone whose mind has wandered. When Jeremy was testing and tasting an interminable queue of cornbread recipes for his first cookbook, he was daydreaming of potential book titles. This one lit him up like the famous lightbulb over the head. The task was then to come up with recipes that deserved the title.

By the author's count, the book contains sixty recipes. His objective is to avoid the situation he encounters with other cookbooks where a quarter of the recipes are good, a quarter of the recipes are so so, and half the recipes are filler. The challenge with these books is to find the recipes in the quarter of good recipes. While I suspect Jackson's estimate of average recipe quality may be just a bit more dismal than what we encounter among respectable authors, I think he has a point. The question about this book, then, is `Has Jeremy Jackson succeeded in publishing sixty original, better than average desserts?' As I suggest in my opening sentence, I believe the answer is `almost'.

On the easier question of originality, the very simple answer is that not all recipes are original, by the author's on admission. The very first recipe in the last chapter of nine `Basic Recipes' is attributed to the very good book by David Libovitz, `Room for Dessert'. I suspect that there is also not a lot of originality in the remaining eight basic recipes or their variations. People have been making pate sucree, pate brisee, and ganache for centuries. I doubt the author has anything startling to tell us about these. Several dessert recipes also have the look of being only small variations on well-known classics. The first traditional title which catches my eye is the Apple Galette.

In spite of the appearance of a few standards, I do believe that the majority of the recipes in the book deserve the label of `original'. I say this with the understanding that I have not read every dessert book ever written, so some of these recipes may be variations on recipes as old as Monsieur Careme himself. I will only say that the recipes which strike me as original seem, at the very least, to not be the product of the imaginary computer program the author concocts to visualize how many recipes in large cookbooks may be created.

The very first recipe in the first chapter on fruits immediately catches my attention as a very clever adaptation of the savory cooking en papillote to the construction of a delightfully surprising dish. The very next recipe gives us an Earl Grey applesauce recipe which I suspect never crossed the minds of the Pennsylvania Dutch who spent so much time perfecting apple dishes. In general, all but the last recipe for a banana smoothie in the chapter on fruit desserts has the strong smell of originality about it. The next chapter on custard based desserts show somewhat less pure originality and somewhat more variation on classics. The three lemon cheesecake seems like an especially delicious addition to the canon of cheesecake recipes. The chapter on pies and tarts opens with a delightful maple custard tart. In fact, the opening recipe in each chapter seems to be an advertisment for the author's originality.

I give the author extra credit for not dwelling on the details or explanations of what makes good pastry. Many very competant writers on pastry, most notably Sherry Yard in her new book `The Secrets of Baking' have covered this ground quite well already. The author does give just enough attention to being careful with your ingredients to insure that no one will shoot themselves in the foot by using an inappropriate substitution when making these dishes. I am a little surprised that he believes there is a big enough difference between Gold Medal all purpose flour and King Arthur all purpose flour to make a difference in these recipes. I know there is a difference, but I'm surprised that a 2-3% difference in protein will make that big a difference. But, he's the baker and I am not, so take his word for it.

One result of this light touch around the details of pastry practice and science is that this book may not want to be your very first experience with touchier techniques like cheesecake, caramel, and melted chocolate. I was surprised at the atypical techniques used in the cheesecake recipe where the recipe starts out with a very hot oven without the benefit of a water bath. I was especially surprised at the prediction of cracks in the cheesecake, until I saw that the cake was to be covered with a glaze which would heal all wounds.

As far as the overall quality of these recipes, I believe that most are very, very good. I did find some which may simply not be the very best use of it's ingredients. The rhubarb cobbler, for example does not come close to the delightful things Wayne Harley Brachman has done with rhubarb in a pie in his book `American Desserts. I don't even thing the recipe is a true cobbler.

The single most delightful aspect of this book is the fact that so many of the recipes are short and relatively simple, as long as you are the master of pastry dough and simple chocolate handling. The high quality of the recipes coupled with the very low list price make this book a sure thing.

Very Highly recommended, with many simple, easy delicious recipes. Almost all recipes live up to the title.

I took this guy's 'boot camp' course and wished I had enlisted in the military boot camp as I would have been less likely to get shell-shocked. I have no one to blame for accepting this huckster's claims. I am a big boy but I was gullible. No longer! This charlatan has a new book out called 'tricks of a trader' and I could write a book 'tricked by a supposed trader/charlatan'. I fell for it once but not again. I wish he would produce his trading results as I am certain he has made more moeny by selling a handful of books than he ever did trading. Am I qualified to criticize this book and the author? I know I am. I belong to the national technicians soiety and although I spend a portion of my time in the real estate business, I am well read on technical anslysis. Many well-known technicians know I do good research. You might call me the 'technician's policeman.' I am prepared to call to task anyone who looks to pass himself off as an expert. My math background serves me well in this regard. Bottom line is avoid anything this jamoke has to sell as it is all tripe.

Neal Weintraub is a good friend of mine and I am mentioned in some of his books. I have always found him to be a honest and trustworthy promoter of the futures industry. I see others are writing very negative reviews about Neal's books using my name and location in the US. I am a very vocal critic of scams in the business and it is very unfortunate that Amazon does not better police their web site to assure potential book buyers of the real identity of who is making comments. www.markbrown.com Mark Brown

1 out of 5 stars Negative contribution to industry.......2004-11-29

I have jousted and admonnished the author for years regarding his poetic license to fabricate useless methods on trading beginning with the programmer's forum. He professed nothing but non-sense back then and he has not deviated from this fruitless journey. This book should NOT be read even if free. A total waste of time. It is an attmept to capitalize on a great book, Jack Schwager's Market Wizard's. An appropriate title for this book is "trading Loser's Style".

1 out of 5 stars Total waste of print and time.......2004-11-24

It's amazing what this guy attempts to pass off as value. First of all he represents he is a trader of reknown. This is total rubbish. Being from Chicago myself I knwo that this guy is a total charlatan and he never made a dime trading. He was a part time trader on the 'baby' mid america exchange. It is equivalent to playing the penny slot machines. The interviews he conducts are made with traders who are of higher stature than the writer--I use that term lightly--but that is like calling a midget a giant since everything is relative. I would like to write that I axquired one morsel of information from this book but all I got was worthless words. I cannot recommend any less this book. Instead of even reading it, I recommend you pound your head against the wall since that would be more gratifying.

4 out of 5 stars Nice insight from real traders.......2003-06-06

Wow! this book has some bad reviews. I am really surprised, perhaps some of the reviewers really expected to be handed a real trading system for 29.95. The book jacket definitely over-promises based on what is inside, but there is still tremendous value in here. If you look past the blatant attempts by some of the interviewees to market their services and take the nuggets where you find them then you will have not wasted your time.

I know several of the traders interviewed in the book. They have reputations that span the spectrum. But the really outstanding interviews were of the traders that you don't find interviewed in other texts. The nameless Phantom, CV, the Committee and Mark Brown interviews come to mind. They are worth the price of the book. The pit stops are also useful, but in some cases are found in other texts

                Book Description

With the growth of spin and the loss of faith in business leaders, a business that follows the strategic principles in this guide can build trust among customers, suppliers, shareholders, and employees and can maintain an increasingly competitive advantage in the marketplace. Effective cooperation and management requires trust to successfully balance other aspects of the commercial life: reciprocity, contracts, economy of speed, innovation, reliability, and commitment. Managers, executives, and entrepreneurial decision makers will find practical advice and corporate exercises to facilitate building trust and help to avoid situations that destroy trust.

                Book Description

Local Government Tax and Land Use Policies in the United States is an accessible, non-technical evaluation of the most recent economic thinking on the nexus between local land use and tax policies. In Part I, Helen Ladd provides a comprehensive summary of the extensive literature on the interaction of local land use and tax policies. She explores the theoretical controversies and clarifies issues such as the use of land use regulation as a fiscal tool, the effects of taxes on economic activity and the success of tax policies to promote economic development. In Parts II and III, a group of experts presents new research on important issues such as the impact of growth on tax burdens, metropolitan tax base sharing, the incidence of impact fees, and the shift to land value taxation in urban areas. Local Government Tax and Land Use Policies in the United States raises provocative questions concerning the conventional wisdom in fiscal policy. It will be indispensable for economists and students interested in urban issues and local public finance as well as planners and policy makers.

                                      Book Description

Undigestable Food For the Mind is not just about a youth who is labeled mentally ill. This book shows the dark side of suburbia. It encompasses potential problems that may be associated with Christianity, when one becomes over-zealous. Exploring the stigma attached to mental illness is, perhaps, more important than the events that went on in the "cages" of the mentally ill patients. This book is for conservative Christians and parents with troubled kids-not just loose cannons. The decadent 80's left a lot of people empty and shattered. Mentally ill people truly deserve more compassion.

                                      5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2003-09-30

I met Ricky here in town and bought his book from him. I had absolutely no idea what to expect, or if i would even read the entire thing. Once i started, however, i couldn't put it down. This is a fascinating book about a great guy that really got screwed over by our mental health system. Buy this book for the great read, and buy it to help out a really smart guy who learned first hand that once you get thrown into the mental "hospital", there will be consequences that last a lifetime. Good luck with your book, Ricky!!!
