Book Description
This book concerns the most important relationship most people have outside the family: the relationship between an employer and an employee. That relationship is crisscrossed by a complex web of laws and regulations. This book describes those laws in a direct, straightforward fashion.
The Illinois Employer's Guide provides the "lay of the land" of personnel law and regulations and integrates the state and federal law that is relevant to an employer. Each section of the book attempts to include both the underlying concept and a simple, straightforward rule.
This book is written in small, self-contained sections. The reader does not need to refer to the rest of the chapter, much less the rest of the book, to find information about a topic. Although this method of writing causes some duplication, it more than repays the reader in the efficiency of its use.
The Illinois Employer's Guide is supplemented at least yearly, and more often if major legislation or court cases require. In order to incorporate updated pages easily, the book is published in a three-ring notebook. The Illinois Employer's Guide is, and will continue to be, one of the most current employment law books available anywhere in the nation.
"Memo English" is used throughout this book. Whenever possible, the author has avoided terms not found regularly in a newspaper and discussions that would appear out-of-place in a business memo. This book is a non-technical discussion of technical topics.
Book Description
Knowing how to negotiate a job offer is a must for everyone, whether entering the work force for the first time or planning a job change. Not only does negotiation determine how much an employer will pay in salary, benefits, and perks, but it also in-flu-ences how a potential employee is regarded. Expert nego-tiators Pinkley and Northcraft have created a step-by-step blueprint for negotiating any offer, including: -Why there may be more money available than there seems -How to 'expand the pie' to earn higher compensation -How to bluff and what to do if the bluff is called.
Customer Reviews:
Average book.......2005-09-13
Ok. I did not like this book that much but it has some good information inside. It just felt like a cheap knockoff of "How to make 1000 a minute" yet it still had some fresh sections. If you only want one book on negotiation, pass on this one. If you already have 1000 a minute and want more info, get "What color is your parachute"?
If you got both and want more info, this one fits the bill. I give it a generous 2 stars because it has some ok tips and a very excellent chapter 9 "Lessons learned from job applicants and employers".
That chapter along with the rest of the mediocre book, make for an average rating 2.5 out of five on a VERY generous scale. In fact on a non generous scale I would probably rate this a 1.
If you still want this book, I'll sell you mine at half price.
Not worth the time unless you are..........2005-07-20
This book was written for Harvard graduates. It is dated and doesn't take into account current market condition. The book assumes all applicant have college degrees, have multiple job offers to choose from, and are only negotiating yearly salaries plus bonuses (not hourly rates, part time positions, commission based positions).
The resources supplied in the book are old, and most don't work. The book was written pre 9/11 and doesn't take into account the current market.
I recommend this book for individuals graduating from, top level private universities, and are interested in 60k/yr positions w/ a company car. To reference the other poor review, "the book was written by a professor with no real world experience."
When negotiating salary, one need to take into account all levels of work, environment, and economy this book doesn't!
well worth the money.......2005-04-21
I was pleasantly surprised at what I got out of the book - it teaches you specific tactics, but the most valuable advice is to to develop a positive and win-win attitude towards negotiation. It should not be a win-lose game, instead it should be a process to explore various options to get a happy ending for both you and your employer
Excellent, Invaluable Tool.......2003-11-26
My first interaction with this text was in 2000 attending Prof. Northcraft's class at the University of Illinois. This was easily the most influential class I experienced as a graduate student, thus I am obviously a little biased as a reviewer. However, now as a member of "Corporate America" I have recently revisited it, and have found the knowledge contained within to be indespensible to my current work. In a very easy-to-read and concise manner Prof. Northcraft gets to the heart of what one needs to succeed in negotiation. The discussion takes you beyond broad-brush theory and focuses on some concrete strategies that can elevate your skill as a negotiator.
My only complaint is the title. This book can help the reader with much more than negotiating a jucier bonus. Anyone looking to improve their negotiation skill for any purpose can learn plenty from this book.
Must-read for all seeking new jobs!.......2001-06-12
This is a must-read for anyone looking for a job or seeking to make the money they deserve in the job they already have. Northcraft and Pinkley are smart, down-to-earth negotiators who show you how you can do your best to negotiate the best salary you can get. Those out of work will gain strength and self-pride from this book, despite their situation -- perhaps the most important help the book offers, in the end!
Book Description
Sylvia's Family Soul Food Cookbook begins as Sylvia recalls her childhood, when she lived with both her mother and her grandmother -- the town's only midwives. The entire community of Hemingway, South Carolina, shared responsibilities, helped raise all of the children, and worked side by side together every day in the bean fields. Perhaps most important, the community shared its food and recipes. When Sylvia set out to write this cookbook, she decided to hold a cook-off back home in Hemingway at Jeremiah Church. Family and friends of all ages shared their favorite dishes as well as their spirit and love for one another. The recipes offered at the cook-off were then compiled to create this incredible collection, along with many of Sylvia's and the Woods family's own recipes.
Here are the kinds of recipes you'd find if you visited the Woods family's home. Sylvia's daughter Bedelia is well known for her Barbecued Beef Short Ribs, which are as sassy and spicy as Bedelia herself. Kenneth, Sylvia's youngest son, has loved to fish ever since he was a child, spending his summers by the fishing hole in Hemingway. Now Kenneth's son, DeSean, enjoys fishing, too. Kenneth's Honey Lemon Tilefish, DeSean's favorite, is just one of Kenneth's special recipes presented here.
And there are many, many other wonderful dishes, too. In this remarkable cookbook, Sylvia has gathered more than 125 soul food classics, including mouthwatering recipes for okra, collard greens, Southern-style pound cakes, hearty meat and seafood stews and casseroles, salads, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, and more. These recipes are straight from the heart of the Woods community of family and friends. Now Sylvia gives them to you to share with your loved ones. Bring them into your home and experience a little bit of Hemingway's soul.

Red Velvet Cake recipe.......2007-03-05
I have been searching for a tasty Red Velvet Cake recipe for a while now. I got the recipe from the Food Network website, and choose this one because I did not want to replicate Cakeman Raven's cake. I am happy with my choice (i used it to make cupcakes). The cake was soft and moist on the inside with a slighty chewy outside. I followed the advice of one of the other posters and used 2 tablespoons of the cocoa powder. When I tasted the raw batter, it had a pleasant chocolate taste, but when I tasted the final cake, it was a little more subtle. Another adjustment that I made was to increase the amount of sugar in the recipe; I added an additional 1/2 c of sugar which bought out the chocolate flavor. I did not make the frosting because I already had a recipe that my friends and family liked.
Once I tasted the cake I came on Amazon and purchased the book.
You can't go wrong!.......2006-07-24
I've read her cookbook from front to back many, many times. I love the receipes, as well as her family stories that help these receipes come alive and taste great! You can't go wrong with this cookbook. A MUST for your cookbook collection. I loved this cookbook so much, that I'm going to purchase her other cookbook.
Good even for beginners.......2006-02-04
I purchased this book and used many of the recipes for Thanksgiving dinner. It takes a while for someone like me, who is a beginner cook, to make the recipes, but they always taste great. My family loves the cheese ham and potato casserole the best! It's always the first thing gone. I have another book of hers that has more recipes, they are both assets to my cookbook collection.
Good for the collection.......2005-10-22
I collect historical cookbooks and this one is a must-have because Sylvia is a legend.
The recipes are a good starting point for soul food. I think that we all have to remember that soul food is that it is very much like jazz -- there is a basic formula, but improvisation is key. With that said, I think there are few soul food books that give the definitive recipe for a dish. While good, I think they are meant to be a starting point for our imagination and experimentation.
Soul food was a cuisine born out of creativity; don't expect one book to capture it all.
She redeemed herself with this one .........2004-05-04
I was afraid to buy this after her first book, but she really redeemed herself here. One day I just had to have smothered pork chops, macaroni & cheese & collard greens and this book DELIVERED on the pork chops & macaroni & cheese!! (use the first book for the greens though) .. These are now in the repertoire as my roommate prefers this to going out to a restaurant! Can't wait to try the red velvet cake!

On the 100th anniversary of Ernest Hemingway's birth, Craig Boreth gives the reader a tour of the author's taste buds in The Hemingway Cookbook. With chapters titled "The Early Years," "Italy," "France," "Spain," "Key West and Cuba," "East Africa," and "Idaho," as well as the Hemingway Wine Cellar and the Hemingway Bar, the reader is assured of finding taste treats ranging from fried trout to fried gudgeon, from pork and beans and spaghetti to eland piccata. And everywhere in between are countless photos of Hemingway with and without beard, as well as with and without clothes.
Boreth's contribution to Hemingwayiana is in providing the connective tissue among all the various stations of the author's life, collecting all possible references to food and drink, and then ferreting out suitable recipes to evoke a similar pleasure. For example, in the 1920s Hemingway writes about a lunch with John dos Passos ("whom I consider a very forceful writer, and an exceedingly pleasant fellow besides"). The meal included Rollmops (a herring dish), Sole Meunière, Civet de Lièvre á la Cocotte (jugged hare), and Marmelade des Pommes. Boreth provides the recipes. The reader is left to wonder what the Montrachet 1919, the Hospice de Beaune 1919, and the bottle of Chambertin might have been like.
The Hemingway Cookbook reads like an anthology of postcards sent back from the author's life. The collected recipes are eccentric, as any collection connected to any individual could not help but be. It's like being handed a metal box stuffed with 3-by-5 recipe cards, all of them written in Hemingway's hand and gathered from one end of his life to the other. A curiosity, really. --Schuyler Ingle
Book Description
Ernest Hemingway’s insatiable appetite for life was evident in his writing and equaled by little else than his voracious appetite for good food and drink. The Hemingway Cookbook collects, for the first time, more than 125 recipes from Hemingway’s life and art featuring such unique dishes as Dorado Fillet in Damn Good Sauce, Woodcock Flambé in Armagnac, Campfire Apple Pie, and Fillet of Lion washed down with Campari and Gordon’s Gin or a cool Cuba Libre. These pages are enriched by family photos, dining passages from stories such as A Moveable Feast, The Old Man and the Sea, and A Farewell to Arms, his short stories, personal correspondence, and even a contribution from his last wife Mary. Collecting recipes from former Hemingway haunts, period cookbooks, and other sources, this book is an authentic re-creation of the meals that enriched Hemingway’s literature

Living well is the best revenge. Here's how........2004-02-20
Hemingway, the man who said 'Living well is the best revenge' knew how to do just that. This book shows you how he did it. So tag along, you'll be living better and enjoying your revenge in no time.
Boreth did his homework, and it shows. Any fan of Hemingway will enjoy this book, and even non-fans will probably enjoy the recipes. Plenty of good food and drink knowledge herein, and enough details about Hem/the recipes/the books to interest anyone. Good book, pretty fair cookbook.
What a gift.......2001-08-24
This book is simply great. Good chow and lots of neat pictures and information about Hemingway. I use it as a gift and makes it easy.
Eat like Papa - the Recipes Work!.......2001-01-13
If you enjoy eating and drinking well, this book will show you how to go about it. The bar recipes are fantastic and the accompanying stories and anecdotes provide crackling fodder for dinner discussions. What fun to be able to recreate meals that you've read about - your own moveable feast! The gluhwein recipe alone will keep you warm and fuzzy all winter. I happily recommend this book to all, Hemingway enthusiasts and critics alike!
Boreth finds a great thread through history and geography!.......2000-08-23
The thing I liked most about this book is the way Boreth uses the life of Hemingway to bring together so many fascinating places, tastes, people, and ideas. It gives you a wonderful sense of a great life, and some tasty recipes to boot.
A moveable feast!.......1999-07-14
Great fun! A tour of Hemingway's world through (and with) his food. The recipes are easy to make and delicious (the Lime Ice is divine!). The cookbook is greatly enhanced by pictures of Hemingway interspersed with thoughtful and insightful commentary on his life and its influence on his work.

The subtitle of The Day Trader, From the Pit to the PC, indicates the evolution of the trader from floor jockey to computer cowboy. But this is less an account of the trader's changing arena than the story of Lewis Borsellino, a fist-shaking Italian American from Chicago's West Side whose grit and determination helped him become one of the top traders in the Standard & Poor futures pit. "When the world around me goes nuts, I become more sane. The wilder the market gets, the more disciplined I become." He credits this focus to his tough but compassionate Italian American father, a truck driver with a penchant for lightening the loads of his deliveries. "I do what I do so you don't have to," says the elder Borsellino, prior to getting busted by the feds for hijacking a million-dollar shipment of silver.
Shedding his father's mobster ties, Borsellino quickly moves up the trading ranks, establishing a position--literally--on the second step of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. For 18 years, he doesn't budge, sometimes using his fists to ward off aggressive traders, and gaining a "sixth sense" that helps him determine which way the market is headed. Although Borsellino provides a good deal of technical reasoning behind his many successes and failures, he repeatedly returns to this intangible quality, stressing its importance and describing how it's made him millions.
The Day Trader concludes with some thoughts on the pit's computerized future. Since writing the book, Borsellino has left the S&P to become a fund manager. He relies on computers now more than ever, but wonders how digital day traders without floor experience will get their sense of market flow, timing, and price patterns. Borsellino's The Day Trader is a good place to start. --Rob McDonald
Book Description
The S&P futures pit is the ultimate arena for traders. It is a place where trading titans make split-second decisions on huge amounts of money, and fortunes appear and vanish with the blink of an eye. Successful day traders are brilliant, aggressive-and lucky. Lewis J. Borsellino is all three. And now he is telling his story. The nation's top S&P futures trader, Borsellino takes you inside the world of the day trader.
Chronicling Borsellino's incredible run on the floor of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, The Day Trader offers a rare behind-the-scenes look at his everyday strategies and tactics. Raised to be a fierce and fearless competitor, Borsellino felt at home the first day he walked into the chaos and excitement of the Merc. In The Day Trader, he offers both a compelling story as well as an inside look at day trading and the S&P market. Borsellino outlines exactly what contributed to his unparalleled success-a rare blend of discipline, drive, intelligence, and an uncanny ability to read and interpret the market. The Day Trader is also a candid memoir of a second generation Italian American who learned tough life lessons from his father.
The senior statesman of the S&P pit, Borsellino offers vivid firsthand accounts of the unique dynamics of the trading floor, the fortunes won and lost in the crash of 1987, the FBI investigation that rocked the futures trading industry, and the tense political battles between Merc titans Leo Melamed and Jack Sandner. He also shares war stories from the floor, many involving top traders such as Richard Dennis and George Soros.
Finally, Borsellino chronicles the latest phase of his career, as he moves beyond the beloved trading pit to the challenges and opportunities of the electronic trading arena. More than the success story of one the nation's most respected traders, The Day Trader offers practical insights into the futures markets, pit trading, market psychology, fundamental and technical analysis, and risk. It is a rare opportunity to see inside the mind of one of today's most brilliant traders.
LEWIS J. BORSELLINO is the top S&P futures trader in the United States with a career that has spanned an unprecedented 18 years. His long-term success puts him into the trading pantheon that features such luminaries as Paul Tudor Jones, Victor Niederhoffer, and bond trader Tom Baldwin. Borsellino is a frequent contributing commentator on CNN and CNBC where he is regarded as the "biggest and best trader" in S&Ps. PATRICIA CRISAFULLI COMMINS is a freelance business writer and former correspondent for Reuters America Inc. She has also written for The Christian Science Monitor and the Wall Street Journal.
Customer Reviews:
Not a book for people looking for trading education.......2004-01-24
I guess I'm spoiled by Martin Schwartz's excellent book Pit Bull. I was expecting a trader's autobiography something along the same line with The Day Trader, but what I got was the first 130 pages of Borsellino talking about what a tough guy he is and about his mafioso father. After that he dips into a high-level discussion of the changes to the commodities and NASDAQ exchanges over the years. There is virtually no mention of trading technique or psychology, outside of the constant tough guy braggadocio, which is pretty sad to hear from a 40-year-old guy. And definitely don't buy it if you're looking for trading advice or techniques. There is none to be found. If you want a nice biographical read about a trader, read Pit Bull or Reminiscences of a Stock Operator instead. Borsellino simply doesn't write well enough to keep this one interesting. The story wanders around too much and is too repetitious.
Excellent Book.......2003-05-13
The book is not a tech how to book but in all fairness the auther doesn't claim it as one. This book is more of an autobiography and in that category it is a 5. The auther brags about himself at times but anyone who is that successful has a right too. Excellent read well worth the time!
Not a trading book, but not too boring a story.......2002-07-25
Dont know whether I had not expected much from this book or what,(I had read through many negative reviews here on Amazon that I know this is not the type of tool book nor sheer biography that one might expect), it is not so boring to me. However, in a trader reader perspective, it is at least 2,000 pips (in yen/$ term, the range in 2002) below the quality level of "Reminiscences of a stock operator" and "Pit Bull". So unless you had no other book in your mind that you wanna read or you are a contrarian, I strongly recommend you to spend your valuable time on other ones, like those I mentioned above, or scan through the Amazon database for better alternatives.
Has nothing for a Day-trader.......2001-07-08
It is auto-biographical and has not improved my knowledge about day-trading one bit. It is more egotistical that knowledgeable. I consider it a waste of my money.
Don't waste your time or money.......2001-06-30
First of all, this book is not about trading, and is virtually devoid of any trading information. As a former floor trader on Wall Street who now trades through a computer, I could give you more trading tips in one paragraph than he gives in the entire book. A significant portion of the book deals with his apparent obsession with his criminal father, who was in prison most of the time Mr. Borsellino was growing up, and who was ultimately murdered by the mob. In spite of these facts, the author repeatedly refers to the excellent advice his father gave him growing up (yeah, right). He also appears proud of his numerous instances where he punched out fellow traders in the pit, something that would have gotten him banned for life at my venerable New York exchange (this is apparently a commentary on the Chicago markets and the people behind them). Also, an attack he was involved with in his immigrant neighborhood lead to him becoming a convicted felon.
Since the book does not deal with trading, and the author is not a celebrity whose biography might have merit on its own, it begs the question of why the book was even written. This question is apparently answered at the end, when the reader discovers Mr. Borsellino is attempting to start his own fund, and therefore needs all the publicity he can muster. Ultimately, the book is a statement about how a poor Italian immigrant family is unable to rise above their background, and how money does not materially change a person.

Answers all your tax questions.......2002-05-01
This book is definitely a handy reference. It will answer all your tax questions in easy to understand wording. Definitely easier to read and understand than the tax laws as written by the Federal Gov't.
Favorite tax book each year!.......2002-01-26
I have a tough time understanding tax rules with the normal tax instructions from IRS, so I have tried both JK Lasser's and the Ernst & Young tax books over the years. The JK Lasser tax book is by far the easiest tax book for me to understand. I'm just a normal citizen preparing my own taxes, including a small business and kids in school. With the JK Lasser tax book, I feel I'm getting every possible advantage. I like the notes in the sidelines, and find my info easily in their extensive and well-done table of contents. It also has 2 copies of every form in the back of the book, so I don't have to send for or go out looking for hard to find forms (which are now also available on-line from the IRS website).
J.K. Lasser's Your Income Tax.......2002-01-24
I work for the IRS answering questions. I personally ordered this book each year because it is more easily organized and explains tax law in simple terms for the taxpayer. Often times if I have trouble explaining tax law in the terms that a taxpayer can understand, I refer to this book. One year I bought both the Ernest & Young and Lasser's Tax Guides. The information is the same in both. I picked up the Lasser Guide more often.
What year is this book for 2001 or 2002.......2001-12-19
I would be nice to know if this book is for preparation of 2001 or 2002 taxes. Since I (nor countless others) do not know, I will buy it locally. Sorry!!!!

Another Great Read by Peter B. Waite.......2000-07-17
As usual, P.B. Waite has written another biography that reads like a good novel. Whether you are an avid Canadian Historian or you are new to it, this book will shine some light on the life of one of Canada's lesser known leaders. From average Halifax boy to one of the most dramatic deaths in the world. "The Man From Halifax" makes for a great round of nightly reading.
