Very disappointing.......2006-06-08
Nothing special, nothing new. Her Nut book, however, is excellent, and you should definitely check that book out.
Yummy Recipes!.......2005-10-03
This book has some great dip ideas. Some are really unique too.
Another winner from Sally Sampson.......2005-02-08
Yet again, Sally Sampson takes the anxiety out of entertaining. This great little book has fantastic recipes for dips - you will love them all, as will your guests. Start with the Gorgonzola spread and go crazy!

Good book but should be more detailed.......2006-03-30
After I read the whole book, I would say it is not a bad book for a beginner. The biggest problem with this book is that it does not explain everything clearly or in details. I must it read this book several times before I can understand the concepts.
Absolute Beginers book.......2005-08-02
i have purshased this book after i have read "all about hedge funds" which is extremely advanced and useful book, "all about commodities" is very helpful and covering a lot of issues regarding the topic, however, its for beginers only if you have a single idea about commodities, futures & options, then this book is not for you
a bit dated and rushed........2002-08-08
All About Commodities was helpful to me, but it is dated, having no knowledge of internet trading, and it seems rushed considering that 2 other books that summarize ALL types of investments gave better introductions to the basic concepts of commodities trading. These other two books are: "Stocks, Bonds, Options, Futures" by the staff of the New York Institute of Finance and "The Wall Street Journal Guide to Understanding Money and Markets" by Richard Saul Wurman. These other two both introduce the term "mark to the market" (and other terms) very well, but this book only mentions it in passing on page 108. When discussing trading software, they mention, something called "neutral network" software, which obviously should be "neural network". Not at typo because they spelled it that way 3 or 4 times! Although the book has a glossary, neither of these two terms end up in it.
The book provided a lot of helpful info that is well-written and clear; I was especially appreciative of the excercises at the end of each chapter since there is a bit of math involved with commodities trading and one needs to practice at it. I was NOT appreciative of the chapter dedicated to studying for the NCFE. It was just a filler where they stuffed in a sample exam, answers, and some commentary. Something like that should be put in an appendix, but better yet, made into a separate booklet. I would recommend this book, but even more highly if the authors put out an updated second edition where they improve the introductory chapter, devote a new chapter to internet trading, and make sure the glossary covers ALL the terms.
Excellent for it's purposes........2000-06-13
I just started a job as a reporter for the New York Cotton Exchange and knew next to nothing about commodities and futures. After reading this book I felt I had a solid foot in the door and now feel ready to dive further into the complicated subject of commodity trading. Excellent choice for a thorough introduction to the subject. In fact, I just purchased McCafferty's All About Options: From the Inside Out. Recommended read.
A good place to start........2000-02-07
Warsendorf and McCafferty have written a well organized primer for the beginning commodities trader. As a rank beginner myself, I truly appreciated the glossary of terms. The nomenclature of this subject is considerable; however, the authors introduce the subject on a level that most will be able to understand.
The title is somewhat misleading as this is not "all" there is to know about commodities, but the authors do not profess to have covered the subject in its entirety. They even give a fairly extensive list of books for further reading. What they have done is to cover the major aspects of commodities trading in a comprehesive, well-written manner. Though even as a beginner, I would have liked to have had a more thorough explanation of the various trading systems (many are covered). Or, perhaps just more examples showing how the systems work in actual practice. This is about my only criticizm.
Warsendorf and McCafferty's philosophy on developing your own trading system was refreshing to me. Instead of saying that one should follow their system, they say that you should study many trading systems and then develop your own. It reminded me of Bruce Lee's "Tao of Jeet Kune Do." Much of the book is filled with this sort of sound, common sense advice.
All in all, it was a good read. I feel well grounded in the subject and ready to tackle more detailed books.
If you're a beginner, this is a good place to start; if you're a veteran, try the tests at the end of the chapters and see how your knowledge of commodities and trading stacks up!

A GOOD START FOR BEGINNERS.......2000-07-09
This is one of two books which I would always recommend for beginners. There is a well prepared questionaire that lets you know if futures trading is for you or not. It helps to bring a lot of basic concepts about the market, choosing a broker, CTA etc. down to a simple easy understandable way.
Even experienced traders would find it quite helpful, especially the section that deals with the overview of several markets. This is really useful material in deciding on which markets to trade and their particular tendencies.
Not terribly well-written........1999-09-05
The book provides some useful information, but is written in such a way that the novice will find impossible to follow. The introductory chapters are particularly atrocious, and plunged right into the middle of things without so much as defining the terms and explaining the basic concepts.
But for someone who already knows the basics of futures trading, this can be a useful summary of the various markets.
Excellent Summary of a Complex Subject.......1999-07-27
I bought this book when I was deciding on whether or not to get started in futures trading. I was not disappointed. Wasendorf & McCafferty clearly walk through the process of trading futures in enough detail to help you understand what its all about but the book is not overly full of jargon or complex snooze producing theory. Might be a bit too simple for very experienced traders but on the whole a great read.
An exellent book........1999-05-30
If you are looking to begin trading in the commodity futures market, get this book. It is the best that I've seen on the subject. It is very clear and well written. Take notes as you read it. Start trading on paper and use this as a reference for a few months and you'll be ready
Overall excellent and well written book for the buck.......1999-04-15
This is a very good book for anyone interested in the futures market...now that I'm an active trader, I still refer to it often!

All About Options is ideal for those who want to begin trading options, those who need to brush up on essential skills or those who just want to know what options are all about. It is an excellent primer for people who are intimidated by the more technical books on the subject. The authors explain clearly the advantages and disadvantages of using option, and also illustrate strategies ranging from the simple to the more complex. All About Options also contains a complete list of books and periodicals available for further study. Topics include: Stock options and options on futures; Factors influencing the pricing of options; Low-risk, high-reward strategies; How to set up an account and choose a broker; How to hedge a stock portfolio.

Trying to cover too much in a very thin book.......1998-08-02
Caution newcomers to options trading:
This book tries to cover the wide field of both futures and stock option trading in under 200 pages. There is no step-by-step explanation of the mechanics of option trading that a newby to option trading will require. If you have the financial resources to even consider options trading, you can afford to spend a few dollars extra and buy the classic "Options as a Strategic Investment" by Lawrence McMillan. There are good reasons why this book sold over 100,000 copies. As a newcomer to options I found its approach far more methodical and understandable than "All about Options from the Inside Out", which will be retired to a remote corner of my library.

Book Description
Credit and savings mechanisms are increasingly becoming a powerful tool in development, but many initiatives are only now aiming for the ownership of these mechanisms to be in the hands of the borrowers themselves. Our Money, Our Movement describes how this goal has already been reached by the Women's Credit Union in Sri Lanka. It challenges the more conventional "delivery" approach to development by illustrating how financial services can be controlled and managed by the poor, rather than delivered to them, an approach which has long been a fundamental tenet of the credit union movement. This is essential and inspiring reading for development agency staff, and others either interested in people's movements or involved in credit and savings initiatives.
Book Description
A manufacturing company is downsizing and wants to know the impact on employee morale. A computer corporation is considering moving its headquarters and needs to determine how many employees intend to relocate. A multinational consulting firm has had a rash of sexual harassment complaints and seeks to determine the extent of the problem. To address these and other business-related issues, organizations are increasingly turning to surveys. Surveys are popular in organizations because--when done properly--they can provide accurate information about major organizational challenges, especially as the technology of surveys rapidly advances. Taking these issues into consideration, How to Conduct Organizational Surveys offers a practical, step-by-step guide. Anyone trying to make the transition from theory to practice will benefit greatly from this how-to guide. How to Conduct Organizational Surveys is also written for researchers who need to fine-tune their surveying skills.

Kids & Parents Both Need This Hero!.......2002-05-02
GEORGE WASHINGTON is a "children's book" but I enjoyed it, too. It is a very easy read, completed and enjoyed on say a plane ride from Washington DC to Philadelphia and/or New York City, which just happen to figure in a major way in this delightfully light paperback. While reading it, yes on the plane, I found myself feeling how I could not wait to put my child on my lap and enjoy it with her. I especially want to read (and reinforce) George's advice on choosing a husband; it's not to be missed!
The authors call our first and perhaps finest President a true "superstar" and they are so right. They describe this great man's character, to which we all want our children to aspire in such realistic and easy to understand terms it must be shared in this format with them. Indeed, the singularly most crucial founding father had quite the admirable relationships with family and friends, in addition to his fellow soldiers and legislators. I wish all world leaders could follow in his foot steps.
Finally what made this such a uniquely special book is the not-so-trivial facts about Mr. Washington's upbringing and life that shows us all how a real hero should (and he did) behave. Read this to your children and have them compare Washington to any music, sports or movie "hero" and have THEM deduce how pale the comparison is.
Order a copy for your favorite child and thank me later, when he or she is old enough to vote.

Great Book for Girls of All Ages!.......2007-10-03
I just absolutely love this book and other books by this author. I think I got it more for me than my baby girl. I love it so much that my husband and me are buying for all the little girls in our family this Christmas.
These books are just too cute.......2007-09-10
This is a cute story and a must have for a girl's collection. All of the "Do Princesses..." are really nice stories with good illustrations.
No pansy princess here!.......2007-05-17
My daughter is really into the princess craze. As a reluctant queen (I was a tomboy), I was excited to see this book, that emphasizes the beauty of all princesses (not just the ones in pretty dresses waiting to be kissed by the prince). I also recommend the Paperbag Princess if you like this book.
love it!.......2007-04-26
This book is super cute. I love the illustrations and the simple story. It's a celebration for all the princesses out there!
Refreshing Princess Book!!!!!!.......2007-01-04
After reading this to my daughter the first time I found it so refreshing after all of the "find your prince and live happily everafter" books. I worry about my 3 year old getting the wrong ideas about "prince charmings" and "happily everafters". This book does an excellent job of letting all little girls know that no matter what we like to do, how we look, or what we wear we are all princesses on the inside. Beautifully done!
Book Description
In this truly mammoth guide, Mike Ashley analyzes and explicates the line between the real Arthurian world and the legends that surround it. Ashley gives us a firm identity not only for King Arthur, but also for Merlin, Guinevere, Lancelot, and the Knights of the Round Table—as well as identifying all the major Arthurian sites. He traces the development of each of the legends and shows how they were related to events happening at the time, bringing a new dimension of realism to the magical Arthurian world. Ashley also offers new and little known information on Arthur—including a fascinating link to the present royal family and the likelihood that Arthurian legends arose from the exploits of not just one man but at least four. With over 700 pages, this is the most complete single-volume guide to Arthurian legend and history.
Customer Reviews:
Title says it all.......2007-06-23
A perfect sourcebook for Arthurian lore, ranging from Welsh histories to modern movies and novels. Jammed packed with information, but certainly not boring to read. This book is awesome!
Not as useful as the author claims.......2005-10-17
This huge book spans the length of Arthuriana and is an interesting read. However, I was left questioning way too much. I was constantly asking myself, "from where does Mike Ashley get his information?" I'm not saying it isn't authentic, but he rarely names sources. For instance, though I've read the geneologies available to me, I've never come across certain names or connections Mike Ashley gives. He always says "the geneologies state," without saying which one. As a reader, and Arthurian scholar, I want to be able to authenticate any information given to me.
Also, his "accepted" criteria for a generation (25-30 years) is way too calculated. With women having children at early ages and men fathering children even into old age (which wasn't that old in the Dark Ages), only a few generations could completely throw Ashley's time-scale way off. Just three generations of people having children at age 20 could throw the scale off by up to 30 years!
Finally, the book is written as if definitive, though precious little known about King Arthur and his time period is definitive. In some places, Ashley gives information like it is historically accurate even though such information directly contradicts most Arthurian scholars. For instance, under the entry for "Anna," Ashley says that the "name Morgause is almost certainly derived from Gwyar." Under the entry for Morgause he implies that this name derives from Morcades or Orcades. This later explanation is the one generally accepted by Arthurian scholars, from what I've read. In fact, many of his supposed historic explanations for Arthurian characters contradict the majority of Arthurian scholars.
This might seem small, but compounded over the length of 670 pages, you have a book full of contradictions and theory presented as fact. If only I knew his resources, I might be able to give this book more than 2 stars. As is, I found it almost entirely unuseful.
A Whole Lot Of Camelot.......2005-07-17
I've had spotty luck with the Mammoth series before; some are quite decent, some are obvious hack jobs, and one or two are just loony (the Mammoth Book of Jack the Ripper pops to mind). This one is divided into three rough sections, of unequal size and value.
The first attempts to break down the "historical Arthur," who Ashley defines first as "the war-leader of the Britons at Badon Hill" and only second as "the guy who Geoffrey of Monmouth was talking about." This results in a pretty thorough chase through obscure Breton king-lists, Nennius, the Ten Battles (fifty pages on them alone), the Welsh Triads, and so forth until he gets to a list of twenty, count-em, suspects. These range from Lucius Artorius Castus (the only Roman commander named 'Artorius' known to have served in Britain) to Arthwys ap Meurig (the king, perhaps, of Gwent in the seventh century, unless he wasn't). Ashley quietly plumps for an Arthur based in Gwent or Powys, but argues that Geoffrey's "Arthur" is a composite of five or six British leaders with mythic elements from Alfred and Aethelstan, and constructs a perhaps over-delicate genealogical lattice-work with which to argue that the victory at Badon was a coalition victory under a king of Dyfed named Agricola or Aircol, with one Vortipor/Gwerthefyr as the primary commander and possible "dux bellorum." This is about as good as things get without getting into Deep History. If this section has a flaw, it's probably best highlighted by Ashley's nervous-making habit of citing Laurence Gardner's Bloodline of the Holy Grail without using the words "barking mad." I'm certainly not an expert in post-Roman British chronicles, so for all I know, Gardner's research into the political-military complexities of the Saxon frontier is actually a model of meticulous restraint -- but I doubt it. Ashley does do a good job of highlighting when some fruity speculation is Gardner's and Gardner's alone -- the first time it appears. By contrast, he is politely dismissive of Geoffrey Ashe's various enthusiasms, and wisely so.
That takes us to page 306, where we begin about 200 pages of primer on the Arthurian Cycle, beginning with some potted history of the twelfth century and then into the various versions of the Tristan, Lancelot, Perceval, Galahad, Merlin, and other sub-cycles through the 14th century. This is excellent stuff, well presented; the Grail section is remarkably free of utter crazitude, although again it's no substitute for a specialist work on the topic like Richard Barber's The Holy Grail (the best single book on the topic). Then a short chapter on Malory, and another brings us up to Tennyson and the Pre-Raphaelites. This is all clear and relatively straightforward; it's also stuff I probably could have assembled myself from my bookshelves -- but not in only $13.50 worth of my time. We close up with sixty pages of Arthurian novels, narrowly defined (no That Hideous Strength or Drawing of the Dark), and ten pages of Arthurian movies -- this is all pretty disposable stuff. Its lack of attention to poetry means only tangential discussion of Eliot and (what's worse) none at all of Charles Williams.
Finally, we have about ninety pages of decent Arthurian Cycle "Who's Who" and gazetteer, more historically minded than Phyllis Ann Karr's wonderful (but primarily literary) Arthurian Companion and therefore of some good utility despite its relative brevity. A solid index in microscopic type concludes our program.
Ashley has read, and widely, all across the topic; for example, he cites John Hughes' far from seminal work Arthurian Myths and Alchemy in passing while discussing Malory and the court of Edward IV. Ashley cites Littleton and Malcor fairly, although space (and his inherent charity, perhaps) prevents full attention to their "Sarmatian thesis." He cites both Keys and Baillie on the Catastrophe of 535, and links it (too sketchily) to the discussion of the Waste Land. He even notes the possible ties between Amlawdd Wledig (from "Culhwch and Olwen") and Hamlet, although he (probably rightly) dismisses them. He misses one or two Arthurs from the fringe of the fringe -- there's no discussion, for example, of W.A. Cummins' dotty theory that King Arthur was actually a Bronze Age Wessex Culture monarch who built Stonehenge. (I'm hesitant to consider that particular absence a flaw.) Out there on the edge he does misstep occasionally; his brief discussion of St. Brendan badly confuses Brendan with Bran, both of whose immrama are relevant to the Arthurian mythos.
But on the whole, minor notches in the Sword of Strange Straps aside, this is an excellent one-volume compendium of Res Arthuria. The movie list is by far the weakest section; the various side-by-side comparisons of the various Cycles is probably the strongest, with the Gildas-to-Geoffrey section on "historical Arthurs" a close second. If you're more interested in post-Malory Arthuriana, try Norris Lacy instead. But if you need one good book on King Arthur, with a strong concentration on the pre-Galfridian material and the relevant historical background, this is probably the one to get -- you certainly won't beat the price.
Book Description
To follow the successes of Classical Whodunnits and Shakespearean Whodunnits, popular anthologist Mike Ashley has specially commissioned more than a score of new stories from top drawer writers, lead by Stephen Baxter, Peter Tremayne, Margaret Frazer, Richard Lupoff, Susanna Gregory, and Tom Holt, for his latest page-turning anthology. Regal detectives (and victims) in these tales include Mary Queen of Scots, George IV, Edward Duke of Windsor, King John, Robert the Bruce, Princess Anastasia of Russia, Victoria's beloved consort Prince Albert.
Customer Reviews:
An unusually high quality anthology.......2006-04-14
I am not a big fan of short story anthologies. I usually find a few that I enjoy, and equal number that I loathe, most that are enjoyable enough ways to pass the time, and, if I'm lucky, one really great story that makes the purchase worthwhile.
I was torn between giving this 4 and 5 stars. Four because none of these stories was a "great", that I will always want to go back to, but almost all of them were very good and interesting. There were none that I thought were truly bad. On this basis, I am going to give Mike Ashley's other anthologies a try.
The stories move over something like a thousand years in time, and I enjoyed the constantly changing times, places and people. They range from almost gruesome to very funny. Not being a historian, I cannot say how accurate they all were, but the ambience was generally very well evoked.
One comment as a matter of taste. Many of the stories are very cynical, which is actually quite appropriate, given the royal subjects. Mysteries usually concern themselves justice, but don't count on it here!
Interesting, but not very compelling..........2001-10-24
This set of royalty-based mysteries also include a bit of alternate reality, notably in the deaths of the Princes in the Tower (Edward V and his brother Richard, Duke of York) and the Grand Duchess Anastasia. I found the stories that were based on earlier royalty (such as Macbeth and his wife Gruoch, a descendant of the older dynasty) rather more interesting. By comparison, the alternate-reality sketches of some famous royal crimes seemed rather iffy. I don't read historical mysteries to get "what-if" scenarios, but rather to get valid and soundly constructed mysteries. [I am rather interested in medieval royalty. Add to that the fact, that I don't like Edward IV nor Henry VII nor Henry VIII!]. I hoped that the less-known mysteries in the lives of some major and minor royal personages would have been discussed, such as "Did Anne of Austria really fall for Buckingham? And what exactly was her relationship with Richelieu?" or "Why did Mary Queen of Scots behave as she did at critical points in her life?" And so forth. Of course, stories using these as plots should also be based on solid historical evidence. That is what makes them historical, not alternate reality.
While there were several stories, some better than others, this anthology therefore failed to satisfy me on several levels. For one, some of the stories simply were not very interesting. Others offended my sense of history (as well as my sense of logic, whatever I posses). Still others struck me as rather unrealistic solutions. On the whole, I cannot recommend this collection; it was not a waste of my time, but I had expected a rather different style.
Who cares whodunnit?.......2001-07-11
This book is neither fish nor fowl! The stories are all short, predominantly silly & far from suspenseful. As far as writing whodunnits is concerned, Agatha Christie has nothing to worry about. History, it definitely is not! Whilst the authors do try to draw circumstances from true history, the links & threads in these stories are pathetically fanciful, bordering on the preposterous. There isn't a single story that gripped me or, in writing this review, is worthy of a positive mention. This book is neither history nor mystery. If you want either, or both, you can certainly do better than this.
A royal collection of great intrigue!.......2000-11-04
In his introduction to this collection, Paul Doherty writes that " a number of (the British) monarchs have met highly suspicious deaths, or disappeared under mysterious circumstances" and then proceeds to give some delectable morsels of royal intrigue, mayhem, and murder. In "Royal Whodunnits" Ashley has brought together 25 "tales" of this nature in an intriguing compendium, to say the least. Popular--and good--writers contribute, from Edward Marston to Peter Tremayne to Susanna Gregory to Margaret Frazer, to name but four. Of course, the collection is fiction--and should be read as so--but intriguing, exciting, and suspenseful nevertheless. The subjects range from Richard II, William the Conqueror, Richard the Lionheart, the Princes in the Tower, Edward II, and Henry VIII, again to name a few. Anglophiles--and even others, if there are any!--will find this a good read! (Billyjhobbs@tyler.net)
A wonderfu, rich read.......2000-07-20
25 stories involving two favorite subjects mysteries and the royal family.
Authors are: M.G. Owen, Peter Tremayne, Mary Reed & Eric Mayer, Tom Holt, Susanna Gregory, Tina & Tony Rath, Liz Holiday, Mary Monica Pulver, Renee Vink, Jean Davidson, Edward Marston, Cherith Baldry, Margaret Frazer, Amy Myers, Claire Griffen, Derek Wilson, Paul Barnett, Robert Franks, Andrew Lane, John T. Aquino, Edward D. Hoch, Martin Edwards, Stephen Baxter, Richard A. Lupoff, Morgan Llywelyn.
Having read this for a reading group, I found no one in the group who felt disappointed in ROYAL WHODUNNITS. Each writer has a voice of his/her own. Each mystery involves a member of the royal family. I was impressed with the knot-tying concept in The Snow of Saint Stephen by M.G. Owen. My favorite was Night's Black Agents by Peter Tremayne - the ending made me gasp. You will find another Mary Reed - Eric Mayer's short story in here also. Their character John the Eunuch, who made his debut in HISTORICAL WHODUNNITS, and now has his own mystery series.
The historical aspects in this anthology are rich and impressive. It's so detailed that reading it in one sitting will be impossible; expect to carry it around and enjoy it for a while. You will get your money's worth with Royal Whodunnits.

Mike King has completed a remarkable journey. One hundred twenty days after he pushed out of Fairbanks, Alaska-in his wheelchair-he arrived in Washington, D.C. An incredible 5600 miles by hand! Injured seven years earlier in a motorcycle accident in Calgary, Alberta, King is a paraplegic with a will that defies the reasonable. But his road through therapy, his struggle to accept his limitation, and his 5600-mile trip through summer's heat and humidity required persistent fortitude. He tells about it openly and poignantly in this personal story. About the Accident- "Between four and five in the afternoon I was just outside the city of Banff on the 20-mile stretch up to Lake Louise where we were all going to meet later that evening. "As I rounded a bend I failed to see a parked car that was preparing to pull onto the road. I ran into the back end of it, broke my back, both my legs, and suffered a lot of internal injuries as well. And the accident left me with a severed spinal cord so that I am paralyzed from the waist down." About his Rehabilitation- "Once I was able to get up and out of bed myself I found that if I asked the staff for something they'd say, 'You know where it is. Get it yourself!' That threw me for a real loop because I figured people were supposed to pity me and get me whatever I needed." About his Trip- "The morning we started out from the hotel and restaurant in Teslin, a little place in the Yukon Territory, a dump truck driver pulled up beside me, honked his horn, and looked at me like I was nuts. I headed on down to the road, but I kept meeting him as he made his runs back and forth. Finally about noon he came by, stopped, and asked what I was doing. When I told him, he invited us into town that night. We had to drive back about 40 miles, but there was no place on down the road anyway!

Still love it!!!.......2003-08-22
I have had this book for years now and i still read it at least once a year I just loved this book since the first time I read it. It is a kid book but I don't recommend it to young children because I remember first time I read the book I was so shocked when one of the character dies. But still it's a really good book and I strongly recommend it to anyone who likes cats *hint hint* happy ending!
I really like this book!.......2001-07-23
The tale of a heroic cat who dared brave the monter of Hobb's Hole!
On the still air from the distant fields came a horrible mixture of a roar and a scream with a snarl mixed in, and even at that distance it was so loud that everyone knew one thing for certain. It was the noise of no ordinary creature!
Only Tom Plug, the butcher's fearless cat and a true hunter, dared brave the monster of Hobb's Hole in his lair - but some said it was a foolhardy mission that could cost him his life!
