Complete with all of the necessary forms and step-by-step instructions, these books are the only state-specific incorporating guides available that include the regulations for starting a limited liability company or familiar partnership.
Customer Reviews:
Very shoddy work and poor effort.......2002-07-01
This book is page after page of only general information about forms of business; the sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation, and limited liability corporation. Yet the book was advertised as a book dealing specifically with Kansas businesses. The Kansas information is less than a tenth of the book and seems only an afterthought.
The author also doesn't seem to understand LLCs or how they are replacing the S Corporation.
The information found in this book is information any serious entrepreneur would have already seen on the web. Today we expect a print source to contain special or value-added information for the price we are paying. I encourage the reader to first find all information you can on the web , as it will easily be more than is contained in this book.
Book Description
Babe Ruth spent his childhood years in an orphanage and, as a baseball player, struck out 1,330 times...on his way to the Hall of Fame. Elvis Presley was banished from the Grand Ole Opry after one performance and told: "You ain't goin' nowhere, son." Oprah Winfrey was fired from her television reporter's job and advised: "You're not fit for TV." Author/interviewer Steve Young relates how hardships, roadblocks, rejections and even physicial infirmities cannot stop people determined to succeed! This collection of motivational stories and anecdotes of famous and everyday "failures" shows that success rests on changing "I can't" into "I will." From the worlds of business, science, entertainment, sports, education, politics and the arts come inspirational, often humorous but always helpful, reflections from those who refused to let defeat stop them on their road to victory. Personal stories by: Erin Brockovich; John Wooden; Jane Goodall; Johnny Unitas; Sam Donaldson; Teddy Pendergrass; Ann Richards; Bill Walton; Steve Allen; Billy Idol; Dr. Audrey Manley; Jimmy Breslin; and many more.

Strength to keep going.......2006-01-28
Reviewed by Kim Peterson for Reader Views (1/06)
Nearly every human wrestles with failure. Some failures are minor setbacks that sidetrack us for awhile. Others knock us off our chosen path and leave us reeling from the impact, questioning our capabilities and our worth. In this collection of inspiring stories about successful people tale after tale reminds the reader that "... failure is part of the process that breeds success."
All the people in the stories have something in common: they summoned the strength to keep going. Perhaps they continued to travel their original path or traveled another road, but they kept moving ahead stepping into a new phase of discovery and growth. The contributors acknowledge that failure came from many sources: themselves, others letting them down, major disappointments, even poor health. Each person illustrates that what pushed him/her toward eventual success was his/her attitude toward failure and finding the courage to try again.
Great Failures is organized into ten chapters; each comprised of mini-segments giving the book a "Chicken Soup for the Soul" feel by permitting readers to consume as little or as much as they desire in a sitting. Motivational quotes appear on almost every page and each segment is followed by humorous trivia about successes and failures throughout history. Stories include activists, sports figures, politicians, media personalities, authors, musicians, celebrities, researchers and more. Recognizable names like Ann Richards, Erin Brockovich, Teddy Pendergrass, Bill Walton and Ed Asner will entice readers to pick up the book. The inspiring stories will keep them reading.
I felt challenged by the odds these people faced on their journeys to success. Jane Goodall's thoughts about the value of friends during a disaster, Clive Cussler's persistence in writing despite nasty reviews of his books, and Stephen J. Cannell's courage to readjust to life after the death of his teen-aged son all remind me of the importance of overcoming adversity.
Well worth the read!.......2005-09-27
In his preface, author Young states: "Parents, teachers, coaches, business supervisors, religious authorities, authors and critics of all sorts, inadvertently or not, have been responsible for dulling aspirations and destroying dreams." Isn't that so true!
From failure (and/or punishment) many of us are afraid to try again. For those who say, "I can't" without ever saying "I'll try," -- this book's message will shake you into trying again.
Steve Young has collected over 60 personal stories of failure from entertainers, adventurers, medicine, politics, business, war, and so much more. A few are stories I've heard, most are new to me. Some writers are famous; others not. All have the message that failure is the "best thing" that ever could happen to them.
Starting with Erin Brockovich, the authors range from Jane Goodall to Jamie Goldman, John Wooden, Bill Walton, Steve Allen, Ann Bancroft, Guy Gabaldon, Robert Townsend and Sam Donaldson and a whole of lot other interesting people in between.
The stories are all great. I had to read every word. This is NOT a book I'll pass along -- it will remain mine, but I will tell everyone about it.
I liked the one about Minnesota Viking's Jim Marshall who ran the wrong way and made a touchdown for the other team. He admitted his mistake, learned from it -- and in telling others, it allowed people everywhere to share mistakes they made and never told anyone about until they told Marshall.
After the stories, the second best thing is the wonderful collection of quotes focusing on failure and success.
The third great element is end-of-chapter quickies like Accidental Achievements (about things invented by accident), Unbelievable Understatement and Red-Letter Rejects (all about famous writers that were rejected again and again before someone finally published their work).
Armchair Interviews says: An amazing collection of "get-off-your-duff" stories to energize and support you to try again -- to rise from failure to success, or to look at your failures in a different light
Success is not Final, Failure is Not Fatal.......2004-04-27
Sir Winston Churchill once stated: "Success is not final, failure is not fatal; it is the courage to continue that counts."
This adage is the constant theme running through the personal accounts of 60 contributors to a book entitled GREAT FAILURES OF THE EXTREMELY SUCCESSFUL: MISTAKES, ADVERSITY, FAILURE AND OTHER STEPPINGSTONES TO SUCCESS authored by Steve Young. Young's narrators cover a broad spectrum of well-known as well as lesser-known personalities. Each recounts candidly their personal experiences where they were able to stand up to adversity.
Young divides the book into ten chapters each of which is prefaced with a quotation. Within these chapters Young endeavours to situate the appropriate narrative that would most aptly suit the intent of the quotation. For example, the first chapter's theme is based upon the assertion of Albert Einstein:
In the Middle of difficulty lies opportunity To illustrate the author presents Nanette Fabray's narrative as to how she overcame her hearing handicap.
Chapter four's preface is a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson: Men succeed when they realize that their failures are the preparations for their victories It is within this context where we learn how Tony Curtis did not permit anti-Semitism and his lack of a formal education stand in the way in preventing him from learning six languages, and becoming a painter, actor, writer and poet.
Chapter seven's words of wisdom is a quote from Violeta Parra, Don't cry when the sun is gone, because the tears won't let you see the stars Here we learn about Sonny Hill who was a legend in the old professional Eastern Basketball League and one of the first African-American announcers for the National Basketball Association. How Hill overcame the ugliness of racism and how as he states "although it was hurtful, I found that this gave me the tools to deal with life. I learned something from those bad times by evaluating what was really happening."
One of the shortcomings of this book is that it overwhelms the reader with too many contributors. The author has fallen into the trap of saturation. No doubt, he has done a great deal of research and some of the stories are worthy of recounting. However, would have not the book been more effective if the author had provided 30 well developed narratives rather than 60 bite size anecdotes? It is important that an author knows when to stop.

Deceptive title but enjoyable.......2003-01-10
This seemed to be more of a self help book than anything. Some of the individuals described in the book hadn't overcome any exceptional adversity. I would go so far as to say some of the people were included in the book to merely to magnifiy their hardships in order to justify their affluence. However there were a handful of intriguing stories. The whole book is brimming with great insprirational quotes. Worth reading but don't expect it to top any best seller lists.
The Story Behind the Celebrity.......2002-11-01
Great stories of the (rich) and famous, most of whom overcame adversity. A collection of 62 autobiographies as told to Steve Young. The subjects are leaders in every field. This book is upbeat, fascinating and fun to read.
I highly recommend this book.

the BEST vegan&natural foods baking book.......2001-05-26
I used this book CONSTANTLY when I worked at a natural foods co-op as a baker. There are endless types of bread recipes from sweet yeasted breads to savory breads. There are TOO many options for vegan substitutes!!It is so wonderful to have access to so many yummy baked goodies that are healthy.I HIGHLY recommend this book for all bakers.
Good for Vegans.......1999-12-21
This is the book I learned to bake with as a vegan child. I learned firsthand that not every recipe is a winner, but I still go back to the pages stained with over fifteen years of use. I've wound up adjusting and revising my favorites, but I would still recommend this as a good reference, especially the section on substitutions for ingredients (if the reader is vegetarian or vegan - nothing really replaces butter and chocolate).
Period Piece That Still Works.......1999-01-18
Uprisings would have earned 5 stars from me, but I do recommend this with a caveat that not all of the recipes work out all of the time. Most do, however, and those ingredients that may have seemed exotic back when are now available in most supermarkets or your local health food emporium. I continue to bake out of Uprisings, but I also love to read it because it's a great way to revisit the 1960s and 70s--a "you are there" type of experience. It is so very earnest.

Great bread baking info/The anti-capitalism left me cold........1997-12-01
This book has the best bread recipies using all natural ingredients for good health. Lots of useful substitutes for people who have special dietary needs. The Best. I did find the constant put down of our capitalistic system of free interprise uncalled for in a cook book. It seemed that the authors primary goal was to sell socialism.

Scrumptious!.......1999-12-07
Tasty recipes from whole grain bakeries fill this creatively designed book from beginning to end. All recipes use whole grains and not one grain of sugar. These are the recipes that will adorn my table for several years and are easy enough to teach children to use. It's a MUST HAVE for those wanting a 100% wholesome food recipe book.
Book Description
An intriguing history of the futures market and speculation
From Jay Gould's attempt to corner the gold market in the 1860s to the Hunt brothers' scandalous efforts to control the silver market in the 1980s, Wheels of Fortune traces the rich, colorful history of the futures market on its quest for respectability and profit. This comprehensive account shows readers why the markets have been grabbing headlines for over 100 years as both respectable economic institutions and hotbeds of gambling activity and scandal. Charles Geisst brings the personalities and strategies behind the futures market and speculation in general to life, against a backdrop of American life that begins prior to the Civil War.
Customer Reviews:
Whale of a Good Story.......2003-02-11
Several members of my family are futures traders and this book captures the business perfectly. Also a good history, beginning before the Civil War and working its way toward the downfall of Long Term Capital Management. The author does a good job of mixing history, the markets and some great anecdotes together so you never get bored reading it. Valuable piece of history and worth the price.
Thorough and Entertaining.......2002-10-31
This book is a history of the futures and derivatives markets from the 1850s to the present. It painstakingly traces the history of the markets as they developed in Chicago and later in New York. What I liked was that the author mixed a good amount of the institutional history with stories about trading scandals to keep the reader interested and entertained. The markets showed that they were always two-faced -- dealing with the public and also for themselves. They got more mature after futures and options were introduced in the 1970's but were still seeing scandal until the late 1990s when the narrative ends. The book also discusses the battle between the markets and the government along the way and it is an interesting part of the story. Makes you wonder whether Enron would have happened if there had been stronger regulators in place. A highly recommended book since it is the first history that I know of that covers this material. Seems a vital part of American history that has been overlooked until now.

"Making $1,000,000 With Only $2,000 - Every Young Person Can Do It" was written with the purpose of showing students and young adults the power of compound interest and the importance of saving and investing money early in life. It's this easy: one $2,000 amount of earned income by a young adult invested into a Roth IRA, growing tax free at the compound rate of return of the stock market over the last 70+ years (12%) would grow into $1,000,000 in 54.8 years.
Book Description
Buyers know the subtleties of mergers and acquisitions-they get ample practice. For most sellers it is all new. This book will help you prepare for what could be the most important negotiations in your life. The author interviewed 57 business owners, who sold for between $2 million and $100+ million, and asked them what tips they would pass on to those about to do it for the first time. These interviews make up the first half of the book. The second half of the book reviews the steps in a sale, with chapters on Preparation, Presenting Information, Brokers, Leveraged Buyouts, Price, Negotiations, Lawyers, Due Diligence and Definitive Agreements. It explains how to collect business intelligence online, and how to react if the buyer lowers the price.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting but geared toward larger companies ($10M and up).......2003-08-12
If you are selling your business it is probably worth a few bucks to hear some words of wisdom from people who've been there. But I found it more applicable to large businesses, $10M and up, selling to corporations, etc. It is not really applicable to small businesses except in a general way.
Best I have found. Hear from those who have been there........2001-07-16
I have read several books on this subject, and this was the only one I would call truly valuable. If you are thinking of a sale, or a merger with a larger company, I can't think of a better source of wisdom than the hard-earned experiences conveyed here in very concise, and surprisingly interesting, anecdotes from people who have already done so.
I particularly appreciated the numerous comments on situations where the seller expected to stay with the company (as a consultant or executive) after the sale. Things they thought about, and things they *wish* they had thought about, are explained.
However, don't expect to receive extensive advice on how to determine what your business is worth as a specific dollar amount. The advice in this book is more about how to behave, what to worry about, when to get professional help, and so on.
Also don't expect to learn much about selling "weird" businesses. Most of the examples here are from people selling very conventional (and profitable) businesses, such as component manufacturers.
If you're selling any business, this is a good read and an efficient use of time, and may help you avoid mistakes. If you're selling a conventional business and expect to be involved after the sale (not just take the money and run), there is so much advice here that you *need* to read this book.
Lots of good insight for sellers of mid to large businesses.......1999-07-12
Good insight from actual sellers of businesses. Much of the info was repetitive, but this just reinforced certain aspects of the sale of a business that were universal. Nicely organized. Quotes from each seller were organized by chapter, based on nature of who business was sold to (public co, financial buyer, foreign investor, etc). Additional chapters discussed different aspects of the sale process (preparation, brokers, LBOs, price, negotiation, letters of intent, etc). Great starting point to begin research on how to sell a business

If you might sell a business, read this book first!.......1997-12-11
Colin Gabriel has created an extremely valuable book that--at less than $25 U.S.--is an absolute must-read for anyone contemplating the sale of a business.
HOW TO SELL YOUR BUSINESS AND GET WHAT YOU WANT! is based on a series of interviews with 57 sellers of various businesses, followed by chapters that describe the critical steps in sequence, and a number of useful appendices, glossary, index, etc.
I expected a dry and (given the number of sellers interviewed) perhaps redundant read: on the contrary, the talk is lively and varied, and I couldn't put this book down.
Gabriel--a professional business broker--obviously knows his subject, but what amazed me most was how he got these sellers to open up and speak candidly about their experiences (not just the success stories, but what they'd do differently if they could do it over again). All but 4 of the 57 permitted him to identify them by name, which gives their advice and anecdotes a (reassuring) stamp of authenticity.
The book is intelligently organized and accessible. I particularly appreciated Gabriel's direct, no-nonsense approach, and the concise descriptions of each of the businesses he has provided in the Table of Contents.
If you are thinking of selling a business for the first time, get this book--if you wait and read it later (as I did), be prepared to have regrets!

Readable and Helpful.......2004-04-08
**NOTE: This review is in reference to the U.S. edition of this book, but was mistakenly posted for the Canadian editiion. **
I purchased this book because I was using TaxCut Standard, which is not very helpful at times, and I got stuck on a particular form. This book helped me to understand the Individual 1040, using language that is more clear and personable than the official IRS instructions.
Anybody who itemizes deductions, or who might do so in the future, will find _Taxes for Dummies_ extremely helpful. Plus, throughout the book, there are tips for handling personal finances. Most of these are geared toward the higher-income earner, but nearly everyone can learn from the tips about home ownership and retirement savings. The advice is sound.
I strongly recommend this book as an aid for preparing one's own 2003 taxes.
Great !!.......2004-04-03
Some sections are hard to understand but this book is about taxes and for the most part they have done a great job of laying things out in a sensible fashion and do a good job of not only explaining how it works but also why the rules are set out that way.

GOOD BOOK> VERYEDUCATIONAL.......2001-05-01
This book of "Washington and his Comrades in Arms" shows how he helped shape the U.S. and what accompishments he made for us. He was recruited by the Continental Congress for command of the army. He fought many difficult battles to to determine the outcome of the war. Many opposing forces stood in his way, for example, General Cornwallis and his gigantic battlaion. The knowledge and strength of Washington helped him defeat lots of obstacles and further him and his army to more victories. His strong leadership helped him win one of the most significant battles in history, the battle at Yorktown. Coming back to Philadelphia, many citizens cheered Washington winning all he could. This book is a great way to learn much about the life of Washington in the army.

On the 16th of November took place the worst disaster which had yet befallen American arms. Fort Washington, lying just south of the Harlem, was the only point still held on Manhattan Island by the Americans. In modern war it has become clear that fortresses supposedly strong may be only traps for their defenders.

Grief, Love and What Endures
"A wise, lyrical and deeply moving auscultation of a mourning heart and its possibilities for solace."
—Publishers Weekly
In Speak to Me, acclaimed novelist Marcie Hershman asks what endures after the death of a loved one. Drawing on her brother's newly discovered Jewish faith during his long illness, as well as childhood memories and the sound of his voice, she offers a heartbreaking meditation on grief and remembrance.
"This book, like a friend, comes to enlighten and console its every reader."
—James Carroll, author of Constantine's Sword
"Hershman feels her way through individual and family memory, philosophy, history, religion, and psychology into realms I haven't been to before, and leaves a loving record of their lives so potent that she made me grieve for people I've never met."
—Rosellen Brown, author of Half a Heart
"A passionate meditation on the sound of others' voices. . . . If the book weren't so beautifully written, it would be almost too painful to read."
—Amanda Heller, The Boston Globe
"It struggles with silence but it exhales lifeaffirming sound."
—Cynthia Dettelbach, Cleveland Jewish News
Customer Reviews:
It crosses boundaries of love, spirituality and the present.......2003-12-28
My brother died almost three years ago, but it took me almost two years of Marcie Hershman's book sitting on my bedside table to get up the courage to read more than a few pages now and then. I finally finished the whole thing today, in one sitting, and am sorry now that I waited. It has been cathartic, enabling me to mourn and to cry in a way that I couldn't before. Her book is full of gentleness, love and writing that flows straight from her pen into our heart. In "Speak to Me" she crosses over boundaries and in between worlds as if they are water. Dreams, spiritual thought, a sometimes complicated childhood and the here and now of her brother Rob's TV producing - she does not limit herself because the story is not one of limits, but of expansion. She has touched a chord that those of us who have lost somebody can identify with. There are many of us who have probably heard the voices, and dreampt dreams about loved ones who are gone. Marcie Hershman, who writes so lovingly about her brother's voice, is, in fact, OUR collective voice to the world.
A Personal Look at Grief.......2003-09-10
Not many books deal with the loss of a sibling and how the death of a brother or sister changes the way you see the world. I found this book extremely helpful to me, although I did not lose a brother, but my husband of sixteen years. Once I started reading, I couldn't put this book down. I started in the afternoon and kept reading through the night. I felt like I was having a heart to heart talk with a good friend. I was happy by how different it was from the usual "how to get over grief" type of book, full of rules and advice. Highly recommended.
Dry book about an interesting subject..........2003-08-21
I read Marcie Hershman's book to give me insight on grief and mourning. Although the topic of voice is intriguing & often neglected, I found the writing to be very dry and difficult to read. The book is brief (100 pages) but for me, I found it hard be propelled forward with detailed descriptions of metaphysical topics. It was excrutiatingly dull for me to complete this short book.
Beautiful, Soul-stirring, Full of Wonder.......2001-07-29
Marcie Hershman's Speak to Me is simply one of the most beautiful books I've ever read. On one level this is "about" the death of a beloved sibling; on its other levels, it engages us in the power of the human voice to speak in so many ways about love -- the love that moves us out of grief and into a richer sense of our lives. That we might hear again our loved one's voice in dreams, or "play" that voice again on audio tape, or have it echo again in memory, and that there are mysteries, too--voice after death--all these aspects of our connection to each other Marcie Hershman reminded me of. She has wit, wisdom and an honesty that reveals the heart of the matter. Her ten meditations, so gorgeously written, and so deeply felt, told me not only about the special bond she and her brother Rob shared, but of the bond I too have felt with family members I have lost. There are so many voices I still long to hear. I am extraordinarily glad to have read Speak to Me. I urge others to read it and share it. This is beautiful, heart-stirring work!
Beautifully written, and brave........2001-06-09
To face your fears, to really dig down deep and write from the heart, is the biggest challenge for any writer. Marcie Hershman more than scales a mountain in SPEAK TO ME. This book is smart and serious yet it ends with such hope and joy, I was sad to put it down. Bravo! A beautiful tribute and memoir.
