I had to buy this book for a real estate class.
The total amount of useful information in this book
would take up about 20 pages. It is extremely repetitive
    and seems to be written for the high school level;
lots of stupid drawings of money bags and dollar signs.

In this practical, entertaining book, America's top executives, including Bill Gates, Richard Branson, and Donald Trump, reflect on lessons they learned from the fantasy game of self-made wealth and power.

2 out of 5 stars easy read but thin on content.......2006-02-07

This book does a great job of paralleling basic business concepts with Monopoly game play. This would work perfectly if business was conducted by four persons in your living room.

The book covers concepts including aggressiion, opportunity, maximizing odds and negotiation. If you find these concepts new or intriguing then this is a great book for you. I found it somewhat humorous and witty but not enough to recommend to friends.

I do find myself oddly excited about my next game of Monopoly as I now have some insights on game strategy that I never knew or cared about before.

3 out of 5 stars Good for Monopoly & not For Business.......2006-01-31

While I found this book interesting to read for a Monopoly Player, I don't think there is any value In the Business side of things.

The book's notes from famous CEO's is great & it's the only thing that gave me reason to turn to the next page, and continue to finish reading the book.

I found the final chapters of the book the most interest; and I suggest as mentioned in another review the book title should be "Everything I Know About Monopoly I Learned from Business".

4 out of 5 stars From Monopoly to Business.......2005-10-05

The information presented in the book related pretty well to the Monopoly game. Each time I read more in the book, I couldn't wait to go play the game. But the information given was meant to be applied to the business world. I am not quite there yet but I feel I gained quite a bit of insight by reading the book and thinking of how it relates to Monopoly. There are quotes and thoughts throughout the book, put in the form of title deeds, chance cards, and other familiar Monopoly things that are rather insightful, but sometimes distracting. The only criticism was with the actual hardcover book itself. The spine broke about 2/3 of the way through.
All in all, a good book that I would recommend.

      4 out of 5 stars Book Summary.......2004-02-07

After buying the rights from creator Charles Darrow, Parker Brothers introduced the board game Monopoly® in 1935. It soon became an American icon of capitalism in its most competitive form. Popular estimates claim that nearly 1 billion people have played the game. Ironically, the game flourished during a time when the Great Depression still held its sway on the American psyche. Author Alan Axelrod attributes this odd phenomenon to the cathartic affect the game had on people. Still, many attribute its success more to its ability to mirror real life. Monopoly as a metaphor for business serves as the impetuous for this book.

Axelrod fills his book generously with quotes from leaders of industry. While the board game differs considerably from real life in some substantive areas, such as starting out on a level playing field, the game compensates for these few exceptions by creating a playing environment that relies more on skill and attitude. The author emphasizes this important lesson, "...our own fates are in large part decided by our actions and not completely by our starting points" (28). The book primarily aims to distill the practical lessons learned from playing the game, but at the same time teaches you many of the skills needed to become a better game player.

The chief contribution Monopoly® makes to the business world is to expound the point that passing "GO" and collecting a $200 income will not win the game. A winning strategy necessitates aggressive play in analyzing, buying, selling, and trading properties. Axelrod believes that players must be bifocal, keeping an eye on both strategy and tactics, "To be sure, the business of business is making money, but it is also managing and manipulating money" (63). An important component in accumulating properties includes the willingness to leverage your buying power by taking on debt and mortgaging auxiliary properties.

Player psychology also figures in prominently. By better understanding yourself and your opponents you can make better decisions. Successful deals require both players to feel that they gained something from the trade. When negotiating Axelrod reminds us what is most important to keep in mind, "The rookie salesman makes the mistake of selling price rather than value" (99). To improve your own playing build a healthy tolerance for taking calculated risks. Eliminate chance from the equation by "doing the math" and basing decisions on facts.

Finally, the better players build on their investing and psychological advantages by exploiting market conditions, such as economic scarcity. The natural shortage of houses and hotels in the game teaches us that it pays to take advantage of market inefficiencies. This extends to finding deals by picking up properties at auction. Vigilance and preparation rule the day.

3 out of 5 stars Monopoly as a Business Simulation.......2003-05-04

In the "real world" it is quite difficult to accurately assess all of the conditions that lead to a venture's success or failure. There are myriad reasons why the information needed to do so is simply not available which range from disclosure restrictions for a continuing business to fear of suit by the principals of a failed business. As such, it is, as a rule, quite difficult to completely analyze the success or failure of a real enterprise - though many have tried.

In Everything I Know About Business I Learned From Monopoly, Axelrod tries to impart business wisdom through a mechanism that can be completely analyzed, the game of Monopoly. As such, he provides insightful commentary on how the game and the "real world" are both similar and different. He illustrates, for example, how in business watching for industry or customer-base changes is similar to watching for the change of game phases in Monopoly, and how both are critical to the decisions that you make to ensure continued prosperity.

Over all, the book is very specific on Monopoly-playing suggestions (mentioning the probabilities attached to rolling dice and landing on properties many times) and somewhat vague on the specifics of applying these principals in business. This is to be expected, though, as the book is clearly about analyzing the game and applying the lessons learned to the business world. Within that context, it does its job quite well.

This book is basically a simulation and, like any simulation, its value is determined by the reader's ability to apply its lessons to reality. At the very least, you will get to read a variety of interesting quotations by industry-leaders; for the more attentive and imaginative readers, the game of Monopoly will provide a whole new mechanism for testing strategies for business in general.

3 out of 5 stars If cooked right, fried food doesn't have to be oily.......2001-10-31

Seeing the title of this book was a great joy for me. I've gotten a little weary of all the nutrition police screaming that anything other than steamed or boiled food will kill us all.

The author certainly knows his stuff and I was impressed at the variety of foods one can fry and how to fry them as well. Taylor is also telling the truth when he says that if cooked right, fried food is surprisingly not greasy.

I tried my hand at his recipe for Southern Fried Chicken. I followed the instructions to a T: using a deep-fry thermometer and keeping the temp between 365-375 degrees F. The result? The crispiest, most tender and delicious chicken I've fried. Fantastic!

Get this book if you want to re-live the joys of fried food. Recommended.

      4 out of 5 stars helpful.......2000-05-13

Taylor's technical information was extremely helpful; giving me the courage to fire up 16,000 BTU's under a big stockpot of 400 degree oil! His suggestion for using potatoes to clean used oil was a great insight. After cleaning the oil, we tried the "taters". Yummy! Recipes are a nice addition to the terrific informative sections.

3 out of 5 stars Frying... did we miss the health watch?.......1999-04-15

With today's health consciousness it was interesting to pick up a cookbook named The Fearless Frying Cookbook written by Hoppin' John Martin Taylor. This book contained over 125 recipes that are almost all fried in one fashion or another. Recipes have the ingredients fried in butter, olive oil, peanut oil, lard, sesame oil, and vegetable oil to name a few. The recipes obviously do not offer any nutritional information. Many of the recipes are poorly laid-out making the cook turn the pages to look at the balance of the recipe that may only be a few extra lines.

While many cookbooks keep the recipes to the same or approximate serving sizes, this book goes from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 and 8 to 10 with some recipes designed for 3 and other unusal serving sizes. Almost all of the recipes are quick and easy and contain ingredients readily available at all basic grocery stores. The book is designed with three different font sizes or styles which make it harder on the eyes of the cook, but easier to pull out the ingredients the directions and the prefaces to each recipe.

Recipes include such items as Sopaipillas, Chickpea Fritters with Sorrel, Fried Egg Salad, Fried Calzone, Fried Shark, Sesame Fried Fish, Pan-Fried Crab Cakes, Deep-Fried Turkey Breast, Pan-Fried Pork Chops, Fried Lamb Patties, Okra Fritters, Fried Bananas, and Fried Ice Cream.

Published by Workman publishing, The Fearless Frying Cookbook bills itself as a cookbook with recipes that are "surprisingly greaseless". I give Hoppin' Taylor credit for putting together an entire cookbook on today's most sensitive health topic - frying of foods, but I would have like to see the book contain a few more alternatives to each recipe and the courage to show the nutritional data on each recipe.

      Book Description

A classic on grain trading, this book is a virtual encyclopedia on all facets involved. Contains many technical trading systems and much market wisdom. Among Ainsworth's proteges was Chester Keltner, still one of the best-known grain fundamental analysists in the country.

Just as other trading books from the era offer, Ainsworth gives a straight forward commentary of his own trading experiences and ideas.

Ainsworth, basically a fundamentalist, provides mostly technical trading material. Some of the rules in the book apparently came from a contest in which Ainsworth offered $500 for the best trading rules submitted by his subscribers. One method, Year Around Trading Plan in wheat and corn, increased a $30,000 account to more than $500,000 over 33 years, a return averaging $14,000 per year. He also gets into seasonal trends, short swing trading, the two-cent stop and many other rules that will interest traders.

Some of the material is out-of-date and price ranges today might make many of Ainsworth's strategies impractical, but any visit with an old master is a good trip, and this book is an excellent addition to any modern grain trader's shelf.

5 out of 5 stars Trading wisdom and advice galore.......2004-05-23

An easy to read, enjoyable book, it offers interesting trading rules that can be adopted to trading any instruments - equities, commodities, futures - yes, even today.

For me, the book is intriguing because of its historical documentation of how far along the development of trading rules, with back testing, had advanced, by 1932-1933.

Some of the specific dollar values of the trading rules are no longer valid, but simply change those to reasonable variables.

Author writes about what we now call breakouts, reversals, congestion and channeling trading strategies, in clear English. He examines whether stop losses work or not. He demonstrates, for his day and age, that because of commissions back then, that scaling in losing trades was a great way to blow a trading account away. He presents tables and copies of trading receipts to demonstrate how well various rules worked back then. Considering that his research was all by hand up through 1932,
      his efforts were amazing.

I bought and read the book, looking for clues as to what led Chester Keltner to create Keltner Channels. Ainsworth employed Keltner 1934-1938, after this book was written, to help test various trading rules submitted for Ainsworth's contests, and to help Ainsworth write his newsletter. I did find things in this book that could be forerunners to Keltner Channels.

I bought 6 books on purchasing a business via Amazon. This is the only one that is not worth looking at. While Mr. Yegge might be a nice fellow, he desperately needs an editor. His opinions are overbearing and presented in such a confusing manner as to undermine any worth at all.

To add insult to injury, Mr. Yeggie keeps stating that it is necessary to purchase his other book if you want to value a company. It would have been easy to include it here -- the other five books I read did just that.

I don't know that I could write any better -- but there are a lot of authors out there who can.

                Cheers

5 out of 5 stars An Insider's View of the Presidency of George Bush.......1998-12-02

I think Dave Valdez, President Bush's Official White House photographer, did an outstanding job depicting President Bush, the statesman, the family man, and the friend, beautifully in his book of pictures and very few words. Dave Valdez captures it all: from vital moments in world affairs, to lighter family times--all the while gaining an insight into George Bush, our 41st President. A wonderful coffee table book and gift book.
