Extraordinarily useful for those interested in becoming successful "office politicians. In contrast to other similar books, Griffin spends little time justifying moral dilemmas and gets straight to the useful stuff- specific examples of how to present yourself, buttering up coworkers, keywords to incorporate in your speech, practicing smalltalk, office romance, and many other practical situations. In the effective "Unofficial Guide to.." style, each chapter is preceded by what you will learn in that chapter, as well as useful sidebar suggestions, and to top it off, a useful appendix section with suggested further readings and laws for sexual harassment. A terrific all-around guide, and probably the most up-to-date of any on the market- can't recommend it enough.

Both a travel guide to memorable New York establishments and a cookbook, Cocktails In New York comes packed with black and white photos of establishments, written descriptions of each cocktail's attributes, and insights on what makes each a cut above the norm. All told, this is an interesting book. A "not bad" read. The author says he's made the rounds of New York bars, taking notes and interviewing bartenders as he went. He's got some interesting cocktail trivia in here, making it a fun and interesting read. Recipe-wise, I didn't find anything laughably wrong, as in most bartending guides. I've been a bartender for 20 years and in the restaurant biz for 30 years.
This book leans toward the tiresome attitude found in so many who love New York for any number of valid reasons - that being "New York is the only place on earth to get - XYZ" News flash for Manhattanites - not true. It's true that few cities on earth can match or rival New York's glitz, money, glamor and sophistication but that doesn't make it the sole proprietor of a good martini.
Recipe-wise, this book gives you unmatched history and lore about most cocktails, and in many cases, the "real, authentic" recipe - WAY better than the tired, hugely out-of-date Mr. Boston's.
As I read this book it called to mind Julia Child's early cookbooks - so achingly authentic they were neither practical nor particularly useful. Julia Child once published a recipe that began "Six weeks before the date of the dinner party, begin preparing...." Huh?!? SIX WEEKS? What am I about to do? Raise my own steer?
This is akin to a recipe(from another source) for Duckling Rouennaise where the first step is to throttle (strangle) a live duck. (OK, clear that picture from your mind, and QUIT LAUGHING!)
Anthony Giglio does not instruct you strangle anything in this book, but a few recipes edge towards this ridiculous level of needless, non-functional authenticity.
If you harbor dreams of tending bar as a profession - this book will give you good background on your art - some of this stuff is stuff you ought to know. If you're curious about cocktail history and lore you'll enjoy this book - it's a fun read but does not serve as a reference manual for the novice wondering how to make a Bellini or a decent margarita - decent margaritas remain the provence of commercial establishments with access to commercial quality ingredients, like decent sour mix which is simply not available on the retail market. Given that, maybe this book's totally from scratch approach will do the trick for you. I haven't tried it and will unlikely ever have the time to invest.
To his credit even Giglio constantly reminds readers that his recipes are merely guides and he encourages experimentation. Good advice and he provides a good foundation for your experiments, Just don't "experiment" all night long, then send your guests packing, driving their own cars. The real pro knows when someone has had too much and ensures their safe conveyance home.

This is a great companion book to the original. All of the information and core concepts mentioned in the first book are actually further detailed in this one.
I can't emphasize enough how useful the three trading tools "trading plan questionnaire, trade worksheet, and trading journal" hav revolutionized the way I trade.
This book can actually stand alone from the original, but I am glad that I have all three books in the series.

Outstanding primer for both the new investor and the more experienced investor interested in improving her/his investing savvy.
First, this book illustrates rather convincingly, how investing just a moderate amount of money consistently over a period of time, can build personal wealth beyond most people's highest expectations. Makes it clear that there are no "guaranteed, get rich quick approaches" but that by being patient and investing in any of a broad range of solid investments...."financial serenity" is definitely within reach.
Then, this book explains the basics of personal financial management; including life insurance, real estate, stocks, bonds, mutual funds, REITs, futures, annuities, 401k plans, IRAs and tips to help determine which is right for you. This explanation of the basics, provides a framework which can be used to help individuals determine which investment vehicles fit their personal financial profile/style, and how they can take the first steps in building a personal financial plan which can secure their future.

This is a true story of young Black man who travels to Seattle, and is hired to work at Microsoft Corporation only to discover they want his ideas, not him. When he complains of discrimination, he is fired - literally the next day. In the months that followed, a discrimination lawsuit is filed, upon which it is soon discovered Microsoft's power not only obviously reaches into the Courts, but the Halls and Chambers of the United States Congress itself. In and of itself this would not be so unusual, were it not for the proximity and timing of clear Republican involvement in what appears to be Microsoft manipulating the Courts to it's advantage in many matters and in especially US v Microsoft - the ongoing antitrust matter the US Justice Department is involved in. The ex-worker tells all to the court, and Microsoft begins apology and PR tactics, eventually settling with the Justice Department over an Injunction/disobeyance issue. A proof of facts is offered in the form of an included CD ROM which chronicles the claims. If that isn't bad enough, this poor litigant discovers the Civil Rights Laws have basically been made into a sham trap, and the laws are now unworkable, but simply on the books as hollow props. This, the book points out, is the result of the preferences the Judiciary has excercised, throughout the years and how even the EEOC works against the people coming to it for help. The work chronicles and parallels the Monica Lewsinsky matter, and points to how the operative of a "vast right wing conspriracy", using the Courts, Congress and Commerce, might actually be operating, as alluded to by the First Lady Hilliary Rodham Clinton. As with any "Conspiracy" a goal must be at hand. The implications of what this goal might be, is so ominous it is bone chilling. The book proffers solutions for this problem, and closes on a tying of diversity, computers, justice and the Clinton Whitehouse.

A Poor Revision.......2005-03-13
In his biography of President Harry S Truman, William Pemberton aims primarily to blame Turman and his administration for the Cold War.
This interpretation is highly flawed and dependent on a number of questionable characterizations and assumptions. He objects to any comparison of Hitler and Stalin, ignores and misrepresents various post-war actions by Stalin, and presents Truman's policies as beligerent, ideologically motivated attacks on a cooperative Soviet Union. His criticism of Truman's decision to use the atomic bomb against Japan grossly under-estimates the number of casualties the US would have sustained had Operation Olympic been implemented, and also exagerates the willingness of the Japanese to surrender. Pemberton's conclusion that the primary motive for the use of the atomic bomb was to intimidate the Soviets is aimed solely at supporting his theis that the Cold War was begun by the US and disregards all evidence to the contrary. However, aggresive behavior by the Soviets, such as their demands on Iran, are either not discussed or are misrepresented. The reader is never informed of the nature of Soviet demands on Iran. For Turkey, Soviet demands that their warships be allowed to pass through the Turkish Straits were reasonable, their demands for base rights along the Straits, and for territorial concessions in eastern Turkey, were expantionist. Pemberton, however, does not inform his readers of the expantionist demands. Along similar lines, Stalin's violations of the Yalta Declaration are condoned by Pemberton as a difference of interpretation between Washington and Moscow. Indeed, Pemberton writes, while denouncing Truman's calls for reforms in Soviet-dominated Central Europe, that

Normally I wouldn't call non-fiction "entertaining," but Phillip Wolf does a great job telling of the struggles facing a home that welcomes in a child with congential heart disease. I laughed in many places at the antics of Phil and his friends, and I cried in many others. Even knowing how things had to end ahead of time, I still kept hoping for a miracle. An outstanding performance by this author.

Guaranteed to make you want to hold your kids a little tighter. Told with raw emotion and an unblinking eye. Should be very helpful to any parent whose child has this complication, and a portion of the proceeds from the sale of the book go to the Loma Linda University Children's Hospital Fund.
An Incredibly Moving Book.......2002-11-04
I am pleased to share my thoughts with you about this heartwarming book about love and how complete love is. I recently read "God Gave Us a Promise". I was incredibly moved by the love and dedication that Jeremiah, Patience and Phil Wolf shared for life. Their story is an awesome story that reminds each and every one who reads it just how precious and short life truly is.
There were many tears and many smiles as I made my way through this book. You will laugh at the cute and cunning ways that Jeremiah got what he wanted. You will laugh at the times that Patience and Phil bounced off of each other, much like "who's on first". It warms your heart to see the teamwork that this marriage truly possesses. You will cry as you feel the pain in their hearts as they pray that God will carry them and Jeremiah to a safe place where there is no more pain.
"God Gave Us a Promise" is one of the best books that I have read. It reminded me that I have so much to be grateful for. It also made me realize that the love a parent feels for a child knows no boundaries. God always works all things for his good. Jeremiah has touched many lives that only God could have known he would. Jeremiah will live in many hearts forever. He certainly is in mine.
