I found this book a lot of fun--reminded me of say Charlott's web. (Except with a weird business twist) It contains quite a bit of VERY basic information--explains a lot of buzzwords in a humorous way and by doing so is more honest about management by fad than most of the books I've read.

For someone just learning about business this wouldn't be a bad book just to pick up some of the vocab and develop a healthy cynicism of business fads. I personally didn't learn anything new. MBAs can feel free to skip this title unless you just want something entertaining.

I personally found it very entertaining--read the whole thing in one day. 4 stars for entertainment!

A big miss.......2006-12-27

I am a big fan of almost all the books Gallup and their people have put out. This book was a total miss. The humor was painful, and the management lessons were forced onto a weak story.

I read the reviews of this book, and thought - it can't be that bad - but, they were right - this was pretty weak. I do not give out many 1 star reviews, but this book actually deserves it. If anything this book is mildly entertaining, but could have been half as long. Better luck next time....

It is a good and strange book. .......2005-08-23

When I read this book ,Animals, Inc., firstly I though it was very funny. The authors used the same words that have differrent meanings. It is a good idea. It made me laugh loudly. Some jokes are very nonsense but I like it. ^J^

Later, I was serious about management, business, operation, etc. I didn't have knowledge about these. I though I studied about the process of running Goode Farm with other animals. I can apply to use it for managing in my life.

I will say about the plot of this story. I think it was a very good plot.
The authors brought many kinds of animals, which have their own styles and different charateristics, to present and run this story very well.
They can write the talking scene between animal and human smoothly, but some scenes didn't tell any ideas that wasn't important to know.

Finally, I will say the book is very interesting concept. It can draw me to follow. I 'd like to know the next thing that will be happen.

It is for people who want to learn about the basic of business with smile.

Missed opportunity - a waste of time........2004-10-11

The title and description got my attention, and had me thinking that this could be a great illustration of the absurdity of various management techniques, and how common business problems might be overcome. But this book is nothing more than corny puns, silly cliches, and ridiculous animal jokes. When the animals take over the farm, they proceed to act like, well, animals, not demonstrating any real human behavior from which we might learn. I do not know what the point was of this book.

The book spends the first 98% of its content trying to be funny but illustrating nothing about mistakes that businesses make. The mistakes that this particular business makes have no correlation whatsoever with real businesses. The only thing that we can say for certain about this business is that it is run by inept managers and populated by inept workers. It just spends too much time trying to be cute, and never really incorporates real-life business issues or makes a point about what the business should be doing differently.

I can't believe Gallop approved this book!.......2004-09-04

Given the success of Gallop's other books, Now, Discover your Strengths and First Break all the Rules, I was excited to read their latest venture. A parable that teaches the lessons of their first two books sounded interesting. Unfortunately, the title is the only thing of interest.

Distilling wisdom through the ENDLESS puns and barnyard "humor" is near impossible. The countless jokes were unbearable -- and I use the word "jokes" lightly because it is so unfunny. Anyway, here's what I learned:

1) Reading books about management and running organizations is a waste of time, as the authors conceded that most books are "good for firewood." Funny, isn't this a book about management and running organizations? Hmmm...
2) 360-degree feedback is a waste of time, except for the fact that "it can get dang cold in January" and once again, you can use the reports for firewood. Also, they go into great detail, page after page, describing ridiculous animal competencies, then go on to use the report for role/job selection. WRONG! 360 should never be used for role/job selection. 360 is a developmental tool. However, in one sentence in the Epilogue, they say that 360 is useful on a limited basis, but never really explain or demonstrate how to use it or that they used it incorrectly to prove some unknown point.
3) Organizational Climate surveys...also a waste of time. But certainly not more so than pages of goofy questions with silly barnyard humor. (In the Epilogue, in one sentence, they say these surveys can be valuable. Incidentally, the only reason I got to the Epilogue was that I wanted to be fair when I wrote this review.)
4) Training to help develop new skills is a waste of time (OK. I get it. Let people do what they are best at. There, I just saved you from reading this book, as this is the only valuable sentence that I took away from the entire book. But of course, I already knew this because I read their first two books.)
5) Meditation and stress management are useless. This is sad because I know several people who meditate and they seem to manage their stress quite well.

This entire book was a great idea...then came the reality. I can almost see the authors laughing to themselves, saying, "let's see how many puns we can squeeze into one book." Animals Inc. was not aMOOsing, as the cow might say, EGGstremely informative as the chicken might say, or anywhere in the NEIGHborhood of being valuable, as the horse might say. If those jokes annoyed you, do not buy this book.

I am a little partial to this book because Betty is my aunt! But the ease in which the book goes over recipes and the great photography makes it easy for me to brag. Betty Thompson-Morton comes from a family of great cooks! Pat and Betty have a great chemistry and it is refreshing to see that they have a cookbook to showcase the great works. I had showed everyone that I know and everyone's impressed. But on the personal side, I am very proud!!!!! The personal touch is what makes this a great read. Even my 13 year old can use these recipes. That will be the key to this books success....no mess and good eats.

Best Psychology I've Read!!.......2002-03-06

Generally I don't enjoy reading books on trading psychology, or any other psych for that matter. When I purchased this, I assumed it was a general book on trading. Boy was I wrong!! The first half of the book is very well written and caused me to take some action on my beliefs. I am not someone who is easily impressed or convinced of anything, that is what made it so enjoyable to me. The second half on trading methodology was good and there were a few usable bits of information.

All in all, if you want a look at yourself as a trader or investor, this book is well worth the small pricetag.

Of the literally hundreds of stock market books I have read, I consider this book to be one of the top three. (The other two are: 1) How I Made $2,000,000 In The Stock Market by Darvas and 2) Zen In The Markets by Toppel). The 21 Irrefutable Truths Of Trading gives insights into how our beliefs and values influence our trading and how we can alter these beliefs and values. As the author says "The trading game is played out in the six inches of space between your ears!" This is a critically important book and I am very thankful the author wrote it.

This book is a reality sandwich on what you will be facing in the trading world and how to best be prepared mentally. It does get a bit long winded at times but it's an easy read.

although, I am a novice trader (trainee), I have found this book to be succintly written to motivate the reader. It reads like a memoir, yet it's instructional and insightful. I found this book to help me on my personal life, too! it's not what happens to you that counts, it's how you interpret it to mean and how you run with it....it's rationally written with easy-to-follow methodologies. If you are interested in reading a book about what's it like to be a active trader, then I would consider this book to be a "Strong BUY" for you!

Above Average BUT Ignore Its Buy-N-Hold Advice.......2003-05-25

Surprisingly effective, however, now in 2003 we are in a secular bear market that likely will not be over until the Dow Jones Index slumps to 3500 or so and the NASDAQ plunges to 600. Thus, you must ignore this book's buy-n-hold advice. Remainder of book is useful, suggest one also read Sy Harding's "Riding the Bear" and seek out Prudent Bear mutual fund's site.

An overview by hindsight.......2002-04-24

This book basically contends that although the leaders of the two countries acted like school yard bullies squaring off that it was George Bush who kept pushing towards war each time Saddam Hussein tried to slow down the current.

Among some of the interesting items presented against President Bush was the fact that he initially seemed to be pushed around by British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher who told him at a meeting that he couldn't stand for Hussein's invasion. In the beginning he wobbled and changed stances on the invasion frequently. His public and private statements through diplomatic channels were contradicting. At first he conveyed to Saddam Hussein (before the invasion of Kuwait) that the U.S. didn't care what Hussein did and would not take action if he invaded because it was an Arab problem. But when the invasion occurred he took action against it. Second, President Bush pushed Sadia Arabia to house U.S. troops on their soil even though the Saudi's were against it. Then he announced to the world that the Saudi's had requested the U.S. troops to help protect their land. Third, President Bush announced that the troops in Saudi Arabia would be there for defense of that country only and denied any intention of an invasion force to push back Iraqi troops. This too, turned out to be untrue.

On the opposite side of the spectrum it seems that, initially, Saddam Hussein's grievances were somewhat legitimate, although not for a full invasion of Kuwait. Saddam had come to the U.S. for help and was told to handle it any way he wanted, it was not our concern. You have to understand that in the years before the Gulf War the U.S. government was helping Saddam Hussein in his war with Iran. There was an issue of Kuwait stealing Iraqi oil by a "slant drill" in an oil field. The issue of Kuwait owning islands that blocked the ability of Iraq to transport their oil out of the Persian Gulf (these were given to Kuwait by the British). Atleast four times Hussein had offered a peace agreement and to remove his soldiers from Kuwait after the invasion through many nations, including Jordan and Russia, all to be turned down by the U.S.

Overall I feel this book was interesting and shed some light on some of the causes behind the war. While I believe that these are valid reasons that have been well researched I'm sure there are even more. The path towards war is usually complex.

This book is a traditional religious Christian book. It has daily devotionals that are based on scripture. It is applicable to many situations and many people would find it inspirational. This is my kind of devotional. No sappy sentiments. Based on scripture, written by one of the most respected theologians ever. I keep a copy of this in my car to bring in to any appointments where I will be waiting. Can read just one day or 10 days at a time. I have bought many copies of this for other people, everyone loves it. I will use this year after year, always something new pops out at me. I love that The Oswald Foundation insists it be sold so cheap so that anyone can afford to own this little gem.

Very well made. Oswall Chambers hit Holiness on the heart. Journalling allows you to see prayers answered the next year you go though the devotions. I have used one for years. This one I sent to my son.

If you have ever doubted God's existence then this is the book for you. It is about a young girl who loses her mind and unborn child behind the walls of a cold and lonely mental hospital room. Vivid descriptions are given of the events that take place including her visions of the paranormal. The poetry is very prophetic and beautiful. It will touch the very core of your heart. A heart breaking but victorious story of her triumph over self-defeat and a cruel world. A must read for anyone who thinks they have reached the end of their road.
