2 out of 5 stars Yikes - this looks daunting!.......2000-04-26

As a beginning learner, I expected this book to be a bit more structured vs diving right into complex sentences and phrases.

For me personally, this book would have been more helpful to focus on everyday usage in the office place, as opposed to focusing on a specfic business situation (financial turnaround).

For intermediate speakers already accustomed to the language, you may find this book useful. If you are just starting, look for something else to give you grounding before taking this book on. My two star rating is more my missed expectation and level of learning, vs what the book can deliver.

This book is filled with translations of business-related English phrases. While the quantity of terms and the quality of the translations are good, there are two fundamental flaws with this book.
                1. All the Japanese terms are written in Romaji, or alphabetic characters. While this may be adequate for those who are just learning the language, it is very limiting for advanced speakers, who are probably more likely to use the high-level expressions contained in this book. I realize that the first edition of this book was published in 1991, but would it have been too much to ask to include the Japanese? Even for a beginning user it can be quite helpful to have the Japanese text to show to a native speaker when communication breaks down. Sometimes Romaji can't cut it.
                2. It's only English-Japanese. If you want to go the other way, you're pretty much out of luck.
This dictionary is [inexpensive], but in this case you get what you pay for.

This book is really great if you are wanting to learn Japanese words that are used in everyday business. I have had a few year of Japanese classes in college, and they really did not prepare me for interacting in the Japanese's business enviroment. They never taught me the vocab. necessary to do business in Japan, but this book did the trick.

                    Book Description

THE FROG AND PRINCE is a business book about networking that draws upon an age-old fairy tale for inspiration—kissing frogs to find a prince. The book lays out the steps and secrets to build and maintain powerful, positive social networks. The steps are explained using an easy to remember acronym, N.E.T.W.O.R.K, with a chapter devoted to each letter. The secrets, revealed throughout the book, are the underlying philosophy and reflect the attitude of positive networkers. This book also marries the exciting new science of the "small-world" phenomenon (the importance of weak links and random connections) with the art of networking. And, though it is a business book, the lessons learned apply to one's personal life, as well. Readers learn how to build powerful, positive social networks—for both business and life.

Thomas J. Donohue, President and CEO of the US Chamber of Commerce, in the foreword writes, Darcy "knows how to reach his audience, to make the complex seem simple, and to make the painstaking follow-up and follow-through of networking actually seem enjoyable."

THE FROG AND PRINCE contains numerous networking stories based on the authors' personal experiences, techniques used by the great networkers, nuggets of practical networking information, end of chapter summaries for quick reference, and short, amusing frog fables to illustrate the points of each chapter. It is the practical field-guide to the art and science of networking.

... then try this book! There are no cheesy gimmicks here, just simple and sound advice on how to bring people you meet into your fold by asking, "What can I do for this person?" rather than "What can they do for me?".

Even experienced networkers could learn something valuable from this book.

Thank you Darcy, Judy and Gayle for this wonderful book. With the tips & best practices you laid out so clearly, I have gained substancial confidence this past year with my "Tribal Introduction". Your abundance message rings true with the dramatic increase in my personal network within my community and business organization. As a recruiter and President of my district's Netwroking Association, your book has inspired me to 'work my pond' with ever increasing success.

                    2 out of 5 stars It's Just Common Sense!!!.......2005-09-29

This book was a disappointement for me, yes, I does give some useful insights into networking and what it is all about. However, most of the chapters are based on common sense that you would do anyway (I hope!!) such as being polite and striking up conservations with people and being nice to everybody regardless of class.

It doesn't give much insight either how to approach contacts at later dates once you have established informal relationships.

If i had to say the one thing i learned the most from this book was to carry business cards where ever i go, they are the golden key to networking.

5 out of 5 stars Give yourself "Permission to Network".......2005-06-03

I loved this book - I see so many people either not giving themselves permission to network and/or not allowing others permission to network at events everyday. Coming to events without business cards and not being ready to introduce yourself is such a loss for all involved - Top it off with showing up but only wanting to speak with the party you came with is so limiting - I love this book and the concept of "Permission to Network" as a focal point was fantastic to see. Everyone needs to read this and then apply the practice at every networking function they attend as well as apply this in general life skills. Good things can only come to those open to recieve them! ;)

                    5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2005-04-16

I considered giving this book only 4 stars, because it occurred to me that the authors don't live in my world, instead they live in a world where people don't do anything else but jet around the world and network with each other - whereas the furthest I've travelled in my job is Chatswood, a few stops further along the railway line.

But then I thought, that possibly a reflection of differences between Australian culture and the field of work that I'm in (I.T., where people are notoriously insular). I also thought that if they can manage to create relationships like that and have so much fun, then best of luck to them... who am I to hold it against them? Plus, they would obviously know what they're talking about in regard to networking.

So I gave it 5 stars on the basis that the authors have put together a witty and fun book that somehow did wonders for my networking *confidence* - and lets face it, the only person whose attitude you can change is yourselves. And somehow this book managed to do this.

5 out of 5 stars The one theme cookbook you will use again and again!.......1999-02-19

I own a retail gift shop in North Carolina and have had great success selling the Pick-A-Party Cookbook. I sell copies of the book to customers who have returned to buy them for gifts. One lady bought a total of 4 books. She bought one for herself, went home and made up some of the recipes, then returned to buy 3 copies for her friends! These recipes can be used year-round! I feel great recommending this book to anyone. Even if they have a large cookbook collection. The decorating ideas in this book are first rate. I also recommend the book for people who throw large parties or maybe someone arranging a family reunion. Patty Sachs gives food and beverage guidelines for large groups! I've never come across that in other books. Simply put, buy the book!

                    5 out of 5 stars This is a one-of-a-kind, must-have party theme cookbook!.......1999-02-19

I love this book. My favorite party so far was the bowling theme! It works great for kids or adults. The decorating ideas made our party a hit! Another great one is the Pet theme! We just got a new puppy and had to celebrate! These recipes are easy to make from ingredients you can find in any kitchen! Put this book in your collection to help make every party memorable! I highly recommend this book.

                    5 out of 5 stars What a SURPRISE!.......1999-02-18

If I could make any comment at all, it would be to not be fooled by the title! Although it has recipes and food ideas, it is FAR MORE than that! I loved it! If you entertain a little... or a lot... this is a MUST!

                    5 out of 5 stars Party-riffic!!!!.......1998-09-01

This gal really knows how to throw the best parties. Her ideas are fresh and fun. We have used this new book twice already with great results --- parties people are still talking about. Why try to think of a special way to celebrate when you've got 'this Party Lady' at your fingertips. Order the book! You'll use it.

Yes I bought the book, paid the cash to use his website (300 month, yes I was suckered) Yes you can make money in daytrading but not with this guy or the garbage in the book. Fact - he doesnt even trade, just gives out advice on this site in real time (never a stop) --- The methods are crazy and out of nowhere
                    - What I have learned and becomen succesful at is that its the simple approach.

There is reason this book has been bashed - see 3 of last 4 post. The postive post are no doubt friends and relitives.

Take or leave the advice but save your cash - or find out yourself that its a scam.

My hobby is to study the markets and I have numerous books about technical analysis and swing trading. This book consists of 362 pages of useless BS. Don't waste your money. I'm going to sell my copy, at pennies on the dollar, to the used book store.
Hopefully, if enought dissatisfied customers do the same thing, there will be so many used copies out there that the authors can't get any royalities out of this useless book.

                    4 out of 5 stars 2 Books in One.......2004-07-21

this book is written by 2 persons, and is split into 2 very different sections.

the first section is written by Yu, founder of the undergroundtrader.com. it is 168 pages long.

Yu's style is straight to the point. he starts by describing why he has needs for certain indicators, then describe its use. doing so one by one, he introduces the entire arsenal of indicators that he uses for 'successful trading'.

after this, he would show you how to trade using these indicators. very detailed descriptions and very informative. the only fault is the lack of graphics, so that you may need to use more imagination to understand what he has so aptly described. he has also detailed how scalpers or swing traders could make use of his methods. everything is very well written and detailed.

this section ends off with one chapter called "putting it all together: a sample week of trades" which is self explainatory.

the second section is writtenn by dr. lockhart. he lives up to his name by being a doctor (phd, i presume), he spends the first 2-3 chapters (50-100 pages) of his 4 chapters (155 pages) on theories and fundamentals.

generally, these theories are basically the dow theory, basic monetary growth theories, fibonacci, gann, candlestick patterns etc. what he dwells on are nothing new, but he likes to give some of these theories new names, and also name many priciples for his theories. these theories will help in the understanding of the main trading premises, but it is really nothing new for traders/investors well versed in the basic fundamentals of dow theories etc.

in his last chapter, he points out the use of various techniques to the calculate the basics of trading. ETS, entry, target + stop. a method for trading is also discussed, the "three point break" method, this method has been covered by steve nison in advanced candlestick patterns.

this section is not like the first, it is more theories and background for traders. it's all about learning the basics and fundamentals of trading. i'll liken it to playing tennis, this section will tell you about the psychology in a game, the wind conditions, the crowd's effect, the court, positioning, your basic strokes, serves etc. while the first section details how to deal with each kind of shots and return the winner.

I'm not entirely sure they've put the correct section at the back of this book. generally, this book is informative and useful for day traders to read up on yu's portion. he has some ideas that is definitely worth exploring. he has detailed a very good method. lockhart's portion is too back to fundamentals, it'll be useful for traders still fresh in the business to catch up on the basics but rather redundant for seasoned traders.

this book may also be applicaple more to the US markets only. i'm not entirely sure it'll be applicable to the tiny singapore (or such relatively small mkts) market here, i intend to find out!

The reviews were obviously written by the writers or their friends. Buy Trading for a Living by Dr. Elder, and High Probability Trading by Marcel Link. These are the best 2 books I've read out of 35 books I've read in 12 years of trading. Good Luck.

                        Book Description

In a book that is destined to be praised, reviled, cited, denounced, loved, and hated -- perhaps by the same reader -- culture maverick Jim Goad presents a thoroughly reasoned, darkly funny, and rampagingly angry defense of America's most maligned social group -- the cultural clan variously referred to as rednecks, hillbillies, white trash, crackers, and trailer trash (provided they're white trailer trash, of course).

As The Redneck Manifesto boldly points out and brilliantly demonstrates, America's dirty little secret isn't racism, but classism. While pouncing incessantly on racial themes, most major media are silent about America's widening class rifts, a problem which negatively affects more people of all colors than does racism. In a nation obsessed with race, this book switches the focus firmly back toward class, and it warns in a voice loud and clear that America will never learn the true meaning of tolerance until it learns to embrace the redneck.

Until this book, no one has so fully explained why white trash exists in America. Tracing the unique historical diaspora of America's white poor, The Redneck Manifesto offers evidence that mass forceful deportations of white slaves and convict laborers from the British Isles formed the bulk of America's white underclass. Tracing the history of these people, the book probes the hidden cultural meanings behind jokes about inbreeding and bestiality. It gets its hands dirty with blue-collar frustration, recreational desperation, and religious salvation. It discusses the value of Elvis, Bigfoot, and space aliens as objects of spiritual veneration. It offers solid logical defenses of tax protest, gun ownership, and antigovernment "hate speech." And it lists surprising reasons for why rednecks and blacks have more in common with each other than either group does with white liberals.

With an unmatched ability for rubbing salt in cultural wounds, Jim Goad deftly dismantles most popular American notions about race and culture and takes a sledgehammer to our delicate glass-blown popular conceptions of government, religion, media, and history. His own socioeconomic background leads him to prefer crackers over slackers, hillbillies over hipsters, and white trash over white cash. He is certain that the trailer park holds more honest people than the House of Representatives, and he knows from personal experience that truck drivers are more trustworthy than lawyers.

You've not read another book like The Redneck Manifesto because there are no other books like it. It's the sort of book that comes along once in a lifetime, which will be too often for some people. It's a rude awakening for a spazzed-out nation. A fire under the ass of a culturally confused country. A literary laxative for a constipated public. It's destined to prick the conscience of a nation which enjoys feeling guilty, but which doesn't like to do anything about it. You'll laugh, and then you'll hate yourself for laughing. Your mind will be pried open but it'll only hurt a little while.

4 out of 5 stars nice piece of middle-brow philosophy.......2007-03-30

If you've never sat through a college Sociology course or aren't a political junkie, The Redneck Manifesto will be a true revelation. Although I lean a little to the right and shy away from propaganda, Jim Goad had me wanting to grap a pitchfork and run down to City Hall to settle the score.

On the negative side, Goad over-sells every theory with example after example supporting his point of view. In many chapters I read the first 3 pages and skipped the next 20 because I'd already bought what he was selling.

4 out of 5 stars Not really a manifesto, but still excellent!.......2007-02-22

While the title would seem to imply that this book is some kind of call to arms for poor white people, it is actually less a manifesto than a history lesson combined with Goad's own unique take on life in America. It lays out a version of American history that does not deny the validity of statements about our "racist past" but certainly makes the case that most whites who ended up in the New World had it pretty rough. He explains the virtually ignored topic of white slavery, the development of the word "redneck", and the utter contempt and bias the modern mainstream media has towards those unfortunate enough to be labeled as such. Alongside the history lesson Goad provides some insight into his views on religion, politics, and war, which are then usually tied into the book's redneck theme.

I found this book to be facinating and despite what some reviewers may think, largely correct in the conclusions it draws about the forbidden topic of anti-white racism in America. Goad even lists his sources so those who doubt the veracity of his claims can do their own research. I do agree somewhat with the reviewer who said that Goad's jokes grew tiring, but I think so mostly because the other material in this book is so important and interesting, not because I think Goad is a "pseudo-reformed urban liberal". Even if this were published as a pamphlet it would stil be worth purchasing. Goad's style may not be for everyone but on the whole this book deals with the topic in a serious though not pedantic manner. It is not intended for self-hating suburban whites, which is unfortunate since they are the people who need to read it the most!

5 out of 5 stars If you can't laugh at this you might as well be dead or French, .......2007-01-26

Most reviewers have missed the most important dimension of this book: Jim Goad is an American prose stylist on parallel with H.L. Mencken, Florence King, and Mark Twain. What most have taken as a war cry is more properly viewed as wit.

This book is filled with hilarious metaphors, transitions, over-the-top prose and verbal darts. Those who have an ideological bone to pick with Goad, or wish to engage in rebuttal had first better check the mirror for where their self-importance and moral superiority meters are set. For Goad, arguing from below with the tools of pugnacious roustabout and the rhetorical and argumentative skills of a St. Aquinas will deploy his first haymaker quite easily: he's going to make you laugh very hard.

An uproarious Rabelaisian wonder of a book. A joy, a pleasure, a belly laugh, a bacchanal, a celebration, a hootenanny, a liberation, a nouvelle monde, a birth, a breakthrough, a backslap, a war whoop, a whimsy, a watershed, a wonder, a discovery, a delight, a treasure, a classic. Jim Goad's The REDNECK MANIFESTO: HOW HILLBILLIES HICKS AND WHITE TRASH BECAME AMERICAS SCAPEGOATS is as American as white lightening and as welcome as liberty and as classic as Menken's "The American Language." A significant and delightful contribution to American prose.

5 out of 5 stars Read at your own Risk... .......2006-08-31

Finally a book on American history and sociology for which you don't need a box of NoDoz! Goad's writing, ranging from colorful to flat out vulgar, is nonetheless very insightful and informative. I would NOT recommend this book to the closed-minded, politially correct, or easily offended. For the rest of us, however, Goad will surely give you a reason to laugh out loud! Goad's rant on racism and the history of social order is hightly descriptive as he depicts a nation of "white trash" whose leisurely activity "manifests a need to FEEL something apart from a working life in which you're treated with all the warmth of a Plasticine toy robot." I was blown away by the historical stories and statistics of white slavery, submission, and opression. Goad reminds us that "White niggers have feelings too!" Ultimately, this book will truly prompt you to rethink your roots, whether they are white, black, hispanic, green, or purlple!

2 out of 5 stars the pointless rant of a phony redneck.......2006-07-08

                        Jim Goad is a phony.

He isn't a southerner, and he is obviously clueless as to what a "redneck" is. That term comes from the Ulster Scots, the single largest ethnic group in America. Finding out about the Scots-Irish would have been the first thing this poser would have done, if he actually cared about the things he is writing about in this book. But defending rednecks and white trash from "scapegoating" isn't his real agenda.

No, Goad is nothing but a typical pseudo-reformed urban liberal. This book is just a pointless rant from a guy who doesn't really believe in anything. He's trying to be shocking and ironic by stating (some of) the obvious while showing off his ability to make juvenile and scatalogical jokes every other line (the book would be a third the length without all the overworked humor it contains, but then it would just be a pamphlet and would have never been published).

His kind is a dime a dozen these days. I wouldn't call Goad an Ann Coulter wannabe, but that's the general neighborhood he inhabits. Show this guy and his ilk some REAL political incorrectness, and they will whimper, put their tails between their legs and hide behind the couch. They're simply not serious people. They're just playing at being writers and thinkers and curmudgeons and misanthropes because they think it's cool.

Goad's true nature was made quite evident by the book that followed this one, a truly rancid piece of self-justification that has even less of a point than this book.

Don't waste your time with Goad. Read James Webb's great book "Born Fighting" instead; it's a real history of real rednecks, by a serious author.

                        Book Description

Redneck Economics provides a case for extreme economic conservatism on an individual basis, in a plainspoken blue-collar fashion.

John W. Terry provides advice and thoughts on accomplishing personal fulfillment by trusting in the individual, based on the belief of laissez faire economics and political liberty that avoid complexity. For example, chapter 4: Things to Remember About Economics, follows the keeping it simple concept expressed in chapter 3 by stating, "Supply and Demand: that's it, that is all you need to know about economics. Forget all those graphs that make you feel as though you enrolled in a Mandarin Chinese language class."

Reading through the pages you're exposed to a set of beliefs with goals and given options for accomplishing those goals.

                        Themes: Simplicity, activism and individualism.

Concepts: Personal investment by saving through diversification, political expression and being skeptical of so called experts.

This book could help understand what economic is.
Especially, it might be good for beginers who start economic life.
                        Furthermore, it's interesting and funny.

"A part of all you earn is yours to keep." "But, isn't all mine to keep!" "No, you must pay the butcher, the baker, and the candlestick maker", said Arkad, the Richest Man in Babylon.

If one should read this book and not accumulate something while he/she is in their productive years, then there has truly been a failure born upon this planet called Earth. None of us are borned to be failures. Situations and circumstances toss us around so, and buffet us about so, until we lose our fight, our will to try, and to win. But, George Clason takes us back to Babylon, and ancient city known for its' wealth, and culture. Arkad, the central character of the story, would be known as a Bill Gates, or an Admon Cashogi, or a J. Paul Getty, or an Aristotle Onassis of our time.

The way Clason has written this book, you can and should imagine yourself right there in that time, attending Arkad's classes, and doing the homework he assign to lifts men from poverty and misery, to wealth, and happiness, and success.

John Nance Garner once colorfully described the office of vice president of the United States as not worth “a pitcher of warm piss,” and no doubt many of the 45 men elected to it would agree. Though it is the second highest elective office in the United States, there is but one constitutional duty: to preside over the Senate. Historically, vice presidents have often been relegated to attending state funerals and heading mostly ceremonial committees. Unless, of course, the president dies or resigns; they are then thrust into the presidency, often with little or no preparation. From John Adams to Albert Gore, Jr., this reference work provides biographies of the 45 vice presidents of the United States. Despite the fact that many think of the office as a stepping stone to the White House, only 14 have actually served as president. Outside the public spotlight, many vice presidents led fascinating lives and served their country with distinction, though little has been written about them. The biographies herein focus on their work as vice president, their relationship with the president under whom they served, and their role in the White house. Their lives after the end of their terms are also examined fully. A bibliography follows each biography.

3 out of 5 stars handy, but dangerous.......1998-07-14

It's hard to find good, thorough and easy-to-use reference works on VPs, and this book fills a needed gap--however...Any reference work is valuable only to the extent that it is accurate, and some big blunders make me nervous here. Andrew Johnson is inexplicably given the middle name Jackson. Has anyone ever heard of Andrew Jackson Johnson? I've done some published work on the Presidency myself, and I can find absolutely no corroboration for this moniker. The author certainly doesn't bother to source it, or much else unfortunately. There was a story, evidently contemporary with Johnson's career, that he was named Andrew after Jackson, but scholarly consensus is that this tale is wholly apocryphal, easily invented for a 19th century Tennessee politician. Since Johnson was born in 1808, in North Carolina, and before Jackson had risen to any particualr prominence, the likelihood that a he was named after the General is slight. Unless she had new info that would be quite w! ! orth sourcing, Waldrup just seems overly willing to repeat a good story as if it were fact. Of course this is unacceptable for a reference work. Then there is the matter of the near-full page portrait of William Henry Harrison (who was only briefly a president, and never a vice)which the book tells the reader is in fact John Tyler. Again, very bad for any work, let alone a reference. Who's on a $20 dollar bill, Martin Van Buren? Don't they have editors in these houses?

                                Book Description

In Silent Cry, the author brings to life and vividly displays his experiences of dealing with alcoholism, domestic violence, homelessness, poverty, physical and emotional abuse, which he and his siblings endured as children in his family.

Furthermore, having to deal with the deaths of some of his brothers, an uncle, and the relationship with his ex-wife can best be described as a life straight from hell. He even had to deal with horrible nightmares regarding killing his father as a means of escape. This is a mere example of the rich and unforgettable drama that awaits the readers of Mr. Charles Lee's first novel. The author states, "I wrote this novel of my life because I want people all over the world to read and share my life experiences with me. These experiences run deep with no frills. They are honest, moving, tearful, homely and entertaining, in a warm and simple sense."

5 out of 5 stars There is hope in "A Silent Cry"........2000-12-27

It has always been my opinion that if a book is good it should be able to transport the reader to another time and place. "A Silent Cry" by Mr. Lee did that for me. Uncomfortable at times while reading this, one walks briefly into a life of poverty, pain and rejection.

Charles Lee's book is a slice of Americana - Black Americana, that I found hard to put down. With each page you feel the frustration and despair of Mr. Lee, only to watch him rise later to yet another challenge. And the way Mr. Lee understates the painful events of his life, one begins to understand why his is a "Silent Cry".

4 out of 5 stars Who would have thought...........2000-12-21

"A Silent Cry" really moved me. It is amazing how one can tell their memories of life, along with the trials and tribulations that one go through.

I found this book to be interesting, since I, myself, had to go through a lot. Who would have thought that reading this book would heal some wounds. Now I know that I was not the only one who has been down a rough road of life.

Charles Lee really told it like it was. I could hardly put the book down!

I have recommended this book to several people. As a matter of fact, my copy is now missing from my library!

5 out of 5 stars Touched by a Silent Cry.......2000-12-13

I was very impressed with a "Silent Cry" by Charles Lee. The book captivated me with it's depiction of Mr. Lee's life situations. It was also very motivating to see someone who was faced with so many obstacles throughout his life, but never gave in to defeat but rather arose to each battle that life dealt him.

I particularly enjoyed chapter 7 when Mr. Lee finally meets his soul mate. It was enlightening to see love prevail in the end. I would definitely recommend a "Silent Cry" by Charles Lee to all of my friends and family.

5 out of 5 stars Some one exist out there!.......2000-12-08

I really enjoyed the book "Silent Cry" by Charles Lee. What I thought was interesting is that the writer was able to give my imagination the surrounding and the time in Era, (years, age, place) and description of the surrounding during his episodes. Also this writer was able to put details of his feelings, and his inner thoughts on paper, during his year growing up. I thought that most males, have a hard time expressing feelings, such as pain, failure, and incompatability with the opposite sex. I though feel that he isn't alone, with the way he was brought up. I think that as more people read this book, they will find apart of their lives being lived by this writer. I liked that even though he had a lot of negative obstacles and people in his life, (as we all did/do in our lives.) He was able to have positive people that were able to purge the negativity from his life. I am sure this book touches a lot of hearts, both his family and strangers. I can tell that Mr.Lee is a simple man, and was inspired to read this because we can get a hold of a lot of reading material on famous people, (president, movie stars, athlete, etc) negative lives, and people should that we all have in common negative energy (people/obstacles) that finds everyone no matter what colour or country you come from. In closing I want to say that Mr. Charles Lee, probably wrote a brief part of his life, as I am sure he has lived more since his closing of the book "Silent Cry" I do await part 2. Thank you for your time in reading my review. Sincerly, Joni
