All three myths, the authors argue, conceal the continued hierarchical and unequal relations of domination and exploitation between European and Euro-American centers and non-European peripheral regions. In this volume, world-system scholars address these and related aspects of the modern/colonial capitalist world-system. Addressing the myth of universalist knowledge, the volume reminds us that our knowledge is situated in the gender, class, racial, and sexual hierarchies of a specific region in the world-system, while the coloniality of power additionally situates our knowledge. The volume further argues that the postcolonial era retains the hierarchy of colonialism, and the possibility of national development without global structural changes is one of the greatest 20th-century myths. Taking these perspectives into consideration, the contributors examine and help to refine classic world-system theory.

A very good beginning, but failed to keep it till the end, and not really military.......2005-11-16

I like Part One (4 chapters) of this book discussing Motivation, Discipline, Confidence and Sacrifice very much. As far as I can recall, there's no other self improvement book I had read (tens of them) that emphasized so much the equivalence of discipline to habit building through tough training/exercise, and committment to sacrifice. The self-question sessions named "Train Tough Challenge" after each chapter are quite intelligent and helpful. However, I am sorry to comment that the other three parts or 12 chapters were much less attractive. The author did not write as skilfully and vividly as the average self help book writers. He should have compensated so through exhaustive elaboration on his military/business analogy to differentiate his book from its sea of competitiors. He had done so in Part One, but failed to follow through till the end. Though he had quoted Einsenhower, Patton and some other war heros on his book, those stories seemed disorganised and irrelevant to the contexts where the stories were told.

I am afraid that you will not be satisfied if you really want to learn "the military way" for your own or your business. With all due respect, "Victory" by Brian Tracy is a much better choice.

This book fired me up! I read a lot of books on personal development as I am the host for a radio show that focuses on personal and business success. Unless the book has good stuff in it, I won't feature it. "Operation Excellence" is more than just good. It's got a "charge" to it that ignites the spirit to believe that most anything CAN be achieved and accomplished in. That's why I wanted to write this review.

The anecdotes are perfect serve well to help make Lt. Col. Bender's points crystal clear. The writing style is comfortable and smooth. I am very impressed with "Operation Excellence". I must be. I rarely write reviews for books I feature on my show on Amazon, or any other internet book site. So when I do it means I am VERY enthused about what I believe it offers to everyday people looking for valid, strong, understandable, doable keys for Living In Success.

An Outstanding Philosophy of Performance.......2004-05-18

Finally someone is confronting our country and the fact that we are living in denial. But Mark Bender suggests that we can indeed handle the truth and that in fact, the truth will set us free. This book is rich with insight and no-nonsense wisdom, presented with clarity and an entertaining writing style. Mikula's book goes straight to the substance of Andrew's trendline methods and introduces the reader to it's applications. Besides that, it reviews other techniques developed by his team which expand the trader's hability to combine trading concepts.

I really wanted to like this book and i really tried to apply the methods to my trading but, it is not very accurate at all you might hit 1 out of 20 trades (which is not a very good ratio too me atleast). And the pitchfork is in every charting package that you buy so, i guess the market just fades thease moves.

if the answer is yes,then I recommend this book for you. its very well written and its the complete pitchfork guide as far as I know. technical analysis trader, at one time or another, relies one trendlines to make his/her forecasts. the book gives you some methods, but you should add what works in your own trading system/style. I suggest to combine trendlines with osillators(I prefer slow stochastic), moving average (macd is the greatest)and chart patterns (double tops/bottoms,head and shoulders ..etc)to avoid bad entries. I don't recommend that you ignore normal support/resistance trendlines. they do work if you know how to apply them ,trader needs time and patient to master trendlines.good trader keeps learning. good luck

Easy read, very informative and seems to work best on FX. Nothing new about fork TA but it is a new twist with the parrellel fork trend lines and trigger points so easilly recouped cost of the book on my first trade so surely this is the best way to recommend it....this book makes you money !

What an entertaining book. I truly enjoyed "My G-String Mother: At Home and Backstage with Gypsy Rose Lee." The book is well written and full of great pictures of an era. I so enjoyed the descriptions of Gypsy's house, her wardrobe, and her choice of life-style. Further, the story provided insights of her life and relationships. The photographs of the important people in her life were excellent and certainly enhanced the book. Gypsy Rose Lee was a woman of substance, intelligence and certainly paved the way for independent women of the future.

I've spent hours interviewing Erik Lee Preminger about his life and his famous parents. I've read other things he's written and watched his compilation of his mother's home videos. This guy is the real deal. He had a childhood most kids couldn't survive intact and he emerged from it as a smart, honest, hardworking, funny and very kind man. He loved his mother when he was a kid, and when he was an adult, he learned to appreciate her strengths (and she had a great many!) and forgive her weaknesses (and we ALL have a lot of those).

He sees Gypsy for what she was - a brilliant, clever, hilarioulsy funny, talented (even her stripteases were punctuated by comedy pieces that she wrote) often selfish, often generous, ambitious and relentlessly hardworking woman.

She REALLY had the childhood from Hell and HER mother makes Gypsy seem like Mother Theresa! But she too emerged from the ashes as a never bitter woman who practically invented the phrase "Carpe Diem."

She had quilting bees at her house with dozens of Hollywood superstars. She adored her beloved little Chinese Crested dogs. She hosted a popular tv talk show. She wrote a best-selling murder mystery. She was still doing USO tours and making our troops laugh when she was ill with cancer. And even that couldn't dim her indomitable spirit. Her acceptance of that terrible illness should be a lesson to us all.

Until I met Erik, all I knew about Gypsy was the tiny bits portrayed in the play and movies, but after reading about her in Erik's books, listening to him talk about her, I have learned to love her dearly.

Erik writes with a very clear, unpretentious style about a child's life with a famous (and infamous) woman and about his eventual understanding of what a truly remarkable woman his mother was. And listening to him talk about his relationship with his dad (when they finally got to know each other) moved me to tears. That should be the next book he writes!

At Home and Backstage with a Legendary Mother........2005-11-22

Young Erik undoubtedly suffered some frustration from having a famous, tenacious, indomitable mother in the form of the glamourpuss Gypsy Rose Lee. But his portrait of her is a tender one--he does not idealize her, but he does not lambast her. It is a mature and loving representation of the bond between a mother and child in the theater business. It is also an interesting account of successful single motherhood far ahead of its time. Anyone who loves Burlesque, Vaudeville, Gypsy Rose Lee and Theater History with love this book. A fun, entertaining non-fiction read.

Overlong and overwrought bio.......2004-06-15

Preminger's half hearted attempts at humility don't exactly leave him coming off smelling like a rose (Gypsy or otherwise)and I think he may have watched one too many performance of AUNTIE MAME. While the chapters go by quickly enough, the reader can't help but find this dysfunctional family pretty tough to like or admire. Selfish and mean spirited characters disguised in campy, candy coating.

Intimate Glimpse of a Fascinating & Eccentric Star.......2004-02-14

Erik Lee Preminger doesn't paint a rosy portrait of his mother, the enigmatic Gypsy Rose Lee, but it isn't a hatchet job either. Miss Lee was obviously a difficult, frugal woman, but also was warm, loving (to an extent), funny, brainy and to her public, glamorous. Preminger's recollections are alternately maddening and hilarious, but the reader finishes the book with the notion that the "Queen of Burlesque" was indeed an amazing piece of work. Why Gypsy Rose Lee isn't more of an icon today is beyond my imagination!

Elderly ex-slaves recounted memories of their childhood during their enslaved period to convey a powerful image of their lives and daily activities. Great info and stories, but...........2007-05-07

Nancy Rhyne usually does an excellent job in chroncling South Carolina's folklore and rescuing fascinating anecdotes from obscurity. She does the same here in these chronicles of the WPA Slave Interview narratives of the 1930s where the elderly ex-slaves talk about their childhood experiences.

Some of these are really fascinating. Folklore fans in particular will enjoy the recollections of ex-slaves talking about hearing, as one interviewee put it-"Br'er Rabbit stories long before Joel Chandler Harris wrote them down." These are excellent examples of the role of storytelling in the lives of non-literate people.

Unfortunately, there is the bowing to the false prophets of political correctness. Granted, a book intended for younger readers cannot be faulted for not using the "N-word" that often appeared in these original narratives. But in her editing of the narratives, she has these ex-slaves in the 1930s unrealistically using modern politically correct terms such as "enslaved Africans" to describe themselves! Come on!

Additionally, a casual comparison of what appears here to the actual original narratives these were "adapted" from (see the WPA Slave Narratives' website) shows that these particular narratives were almost gutted beind recognition. Ms. Rhyne's versions alone make for interesting (if somewhat stilted) reading, but his is best used as a reference for the original works, which are far more compelling.

Those issues aside, it's certainly worth a read and Ms. Rhyne deserves her usual kudus for bringing material usually buried in archives to the availability to the casal reader.

A great read for all ages.......2000-01-11

I got this book beacause I heard an interview with the author and it sounded interesting. I did not know if I would like it or not; I'm not some bleeding-heart liberal, just your average WASP Southerner. The story of how the information in this book came to be recorded is amazing enough, but when I started reading the short little stories told by adults who had been slaves in their childhood, I could not put it down. Funny, Southern, touching, sad, memorable! If you want to know what it means to live in the South today, you MUST read this book. It is the history we build on today.
