Great Information in Layman's Terms.......2007-06-07

I first checked this out from our local library...it was so GREAT, I went out and bought one for my company. I did meet with several lawyers and accountants...the lawyer I choose told me I could incorporate by myself, which I did. I did have him review several critical documents, like the company bylaws, which was a template from this book. The book comes with a CD that has templates that you fill in the blanks...it also tells you in Layman's terms what the documents are and provides clear examples and steps on how to fill out the templates. I would highly recommend this and "The Corporate Minutes Book" (from the same author).

Quite informative and well done. A much better approach than "Quicken Lawyer 2002 Business Deluxe" by Nolo Press, which is hastily put together and of low quality.
Use it to understand the subject, prepare your documents for review by a lawyer and have appropriate questions when meeting with your attorney. It will save you money and trouble. Nevertheless, I would be tempted to say that it would be hard to skip the attorney altogether based on this book.

not bad at all.......2005-03-14

I had this book on my wishlist for over a year before I finally bought and read it. I couldn't decide how good it would be, if it would really be worth a $10 bill--or if other books were more deserving of my cash. If you're in that position, this review is for you.

The chapters of this book alternate between stories of adventure and motivational or self-help chapters.

The adventure stories are enjoyable, and if, like me, you haven't had enough adventures lately they might inspire you. The story of his experience as a gaucho, near the middle of the book, is a great one. In the end of the book he compares fatherhood to an adventure, entertainingly comparing his daily routine to the imagined routine of a cave-man. These chapters are the better parts of the book.

The motivational/self-help chapters are filled with the standard exhortations, although here and there the adventure theme adds an intriguing twist, or a unique suggestion. If you really take them seriously, they might be quite helpful. So, although this book is not bad, it's not great, and I'd recomemend "Less Traveled" or "7 Habits" above it.

Conclusion: If you've read those two books, and if you think adventure is something your life is missing, then this book is worth the money and time.

Further conclusion: If you haven't done anything adventurous lately, and your life feels boring, then it's time you did. Reading this book might help you get off your tush, and then it's important that you read it.

Enjoyable read.......2004-07-14

I have read a lot of non-fiction selp help and spiritual books and I must say this one was a pleasure to read. The writer, who spent 20 years he says, completing this books shares with the reader what he learned mainly from his life experience not just "book larnin", so to speak, which makes this book a somewhat light but pithy and very interesting read.

The author uses a pattern whereby he writes a chapter that tells the story of one of his adventures in what I found was an engaging, honest and delightful way. It was hard not to want to find out how things turned out I found and hard, at times, to put the book down.

After you read a fact based chapter, the author then writes a chapter that summarizes the life lessons he learned from his experiences in a point by point manner although he still weaves his life into these chapters as well. These chapters I found easy to follow and yet packed with good life advice. Some of it is probably a review of what you may have heard somewhere else but has the ring of experience behind it that makes it seem more real. For example, from one of his encounters with one of the last real life gaucho's we are given his (the gaucho's) meaning of life summarized in a few sentences- "There is nowhere to go. There is nothing to do except to be of service." Then, the author expands upon that statement in the following chapter.

The author's proclivity for action makes this a good read in particular for those seeking to become better people but lack the personal motivation to pursue a more sedentary sitting meditation practice. The author's perspective is interwoven with a spiritual foundation but emphasizes an active pursuit of one's growth to reach a more spiritual point of view. That is, using everday life as a tool for growth. It also emphasizes the fact that one can become a more complete person without having to embark upon the adventuresome and risk taking life that he did. (Oh yes, some of his fellow adventurer's were woman as well and there is definitely something in here for woman, even householder's, as well.)

My only criticism is the author's political naievete' which he sort expresses at the end but not blatantly, but that doesn't detract from the highly entertaining way that hard earned and quite useful life messages are communicated to the reader. (I probably only noticed the political stuff more because of my own sensitivity to that arena not because the author is trying to blantly push a political message because he is definitely not.)

If you are a "seeker" looking for a change of pace and refreshing read I think you will find it in this book. At least I did. In fact, I hope to reread it to remind myself of the useful messages conveyed if I can put down all of the other books that I have committed myself to, that is.

I SAW THIS BOOK WHILE I WAS ON CHRISTMAS SHOPPING SPREE AND I BOUGHT IT AS A GIFT. I STARTED READING IT AND I COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN.I ENJOYED IT SO MUCH THAT I HAD TO RETURN TO THE BOOKSTORE AND BUY TWO MORE COPIES. THIS BOOK STIRS THE ADVENTUROUS PART OF THE SOUL. GREAT READ!!

Adventures in Everyday Life.......2000-12-15

Salz tone of high adventure combined with self-deprecation (he actually advocates falling off your horse as an excellent way to establish rapport with the natives) definitely makes for an entertaining read.

While his of the Andes and Patagonia (from which one can learn an astounding number of ways to use one's hands when they are frozen solid) are gripping, Salz should be more readily compared to Richard Bach than Sebastian Junger.

Salz manages to give concrete ways of getting the spirit of adventure into your life without having to get your passport stamped... or even leaving your own backyard!

I'd recommend this book highly to anyone who feels like the grind of everyday life is getting them down. I look forward to his next book!

Nutrition Encyclopedia.......2005-06-28

In my search for the best diet for my family, this book never came up in my Amazon.com search. I ran across this book at a bookstore that included used books as well as new ones. I paid $9.95 for it and it is well worth it to someone interested in learning facts about nutrition. So many diet books take one small segment of nutrition knowledge and build eating plans around that one segment.

The Goldbecks have a long history of studying nutrition. This is not their opinion. It is based on much research. The book has 43 pages of bibliography!

I only had two problems with the book.
1) Although they admit that animal proteins and fats can help, they are proponents of a plant based diet (with the exception of eggs and yogurt).
2) There is a chart showing the number of grams of carbohydrates a person needs at different calorie levels, but the recipes do not show nutrition information. The information is not very useful if it can't be translated to the recipes. I plan to use the information when using recipes from other books that do include the nutritional information.

Here are just a few of the things included in this book:
1) A list of the foods that contain the most antioxidants
2) Fat facts at a glance.
3) Glycemic force ratings
4) Fiber content of some common foods
5) Foods and their fatty acids

The only reason I gave it a four instead of a five is because I have not tried the recipes.

Terrific recipe & nutrition resource.......2004-07-13

I'm surprised there aren't more reviews on this wonderful reference/cookbook. I repeatedly find myself referring back to the HDitW not just for recipes, but for nutritional info on such things as Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids, how to cook dried beans, the glycemic index, etc. It is extremely well-researched and quite comprehensive. It's more a lifestyle eating guide than a cookbook. The recipes are very good, but not spicy enough for my taste - so I just double the garlic, etc.! Highly recommended.

Terrific all-around guide to nutrition.......2001-06-12

Pros:

1) The coverage of current scientific understanding of nutrition is comprehensive and detailed, yet clear for nonspecialists.

2) The text is well organized with a quick overview, followed by helpful recipes and tips, in-depth scientific information, references and two good indices.

3) It is apparent that the author is an experienced nutritionist-- she understands the practical problems faced by those of us trying to improve our diets, and she also is sensitive to the fact that food needs to taste good in order to satisify.

Cons:

1) The book is very focused on vegetarian foods and possibly slights the nutrition of food derived from animal sources. (However, after reading the book, you may as I did change your view on the importance of meat in a healthy diet.)

2) The book could be seen as a wholefoods manifesto. For example, the author promotes sustainable agriculture and organic farming. These topics are really outside of the scope of a book on nutrition.

I *highly* recommend this book. Following its guidelines has made a major improvement in my quality of life. (This is the book I come back to after having read a shelf full of diet and nutrition books.)

Forget trendy diets, this book is a great guide to changing your life! It is very informative and provides recipes and guidelines for nutritional diet. If you want to lose weight, feel great, live long and healthy this is the book.

I haven't really used any of the recipes (although many of them sound great) but the nutritional information is very thorough and well-arranged. With so much contradictory information out there, this book is refreshing in that the authors' research is broad and many factors are explained with excellent detail.

This book is entirely based off of my memories of my psychotic episodes from 1995-1997 and shows the reader what it's like to be in psychosis. There are no sugar coated stories here. No punches pulled. I let the reader right into my head to see and feel what a psychosis is actually like. It's not like what they show in the movies; it's much stranger. I don't talk so much about my odd behavior as much as I show the reader what I'm going through at the time. Most of the time I could not tell you what or if anything was odd about my behavior, but I go right into what was wrong with my thinking. The book is intense for the reader and very personal for me to share, but it is all behind me now. Some parts of this book may make you laugh and cry at the same time, but the riveting climax might frighten you. There is a recovery, though. Schizoaffective disorder is a disease that can be recovered from and I think I prove that. I've worked full-time through!

all of this and still do. Nothing in this book is fictionalized except the names and places and that is out of respect for other people's privacy. It is a good book for anyone who wants to understand what is going on in the head of a person suffering from psychosis. I have recovered from the disease and I'm stable now, but the book is about my tormented years. There is hope. You need to get this book! B. W. Miller

This book shows, very well, what it's like to have schizophrenia. He was very brave. I know the guy and he's a good person and very funny. I'm just glad he did not shoot himself, because I may have in the same situation! I would have never know what he went through by knowing him, but after reading this I have a new respect for him. This book is easy to read and follow. The book is terrifying at times and funny at other times. He shows what it was like to walk in his shoes through that period of time. It's very detailed. You will really enjoy reading this book. Buy it now.

Come inside his mind............2002-11-10

This book amazed me! I have known the author for several years and knew him during this time he writes of. He writes about the confusion, the voices, the strange ideas and paranoia with startling clarity and honesty. As he says in his own words, this book is not so much about how he lived and coped with his schizophrenia, it's a glimpse into the mind of the schizophrenic personality. I think this book would be great for psych students or just for help in understanding someone you may know who has been diagnosed with this disease. It won't tell you how to deal with them, but it will give you an open window into where they are..just know that it will be stranger than anything you can imagine!

Gil Eyal, Ivan Szelenyi, Eleanor Townsley effectively collaborate in Making Capitalism Without Capitalists: The New Ruling Elites In Eastern Europe to offer a new and compelling theory regarding the transition to capitalism from previously communist/socialist economic systems. Of special note is the two-fold origin of those taking responsibility for the construction of capitalism: former Communist technocrats, and former dissident intellectuals. Making Capitalism Without Capitalists is informative, insightful, occasionally iconoclastic reading highly recommended for students of economics and contemporary Eastern European international studies.

Can't Say Enough.......2002-08-20

An extraordinary book from an adult's understanding, as well as boyhood perspective, of poverty-stricken and problematic family life in the Gorbals of Glasgow. This very honest, well-written book is successful in its honesty and description of friendships, family situations, political philosophies and working environment during the period. It conveys both a profound and generous understanding of helpless personal circumstances. I went to Scotland searching for a second copy of this book as it was out of print at the time and found it in a used bookstore. I will always have this book with me.
