3 out of 5 stars some valuable nuggets.......2006-06-25

The book is not as bad as some of the reviewers here might lead one to believe. Certainly it doesn't come with a magic potion of boss fixing, but the best advice I've heard came from this book - if you recognize that you're in a bad situation and you stay there, you're a participant not a victim. It helped me realize that I'm never powerless over my situation.

1 out of 5 stars No Practical Advices.......2005-11-19

This book offers no real practical advice for reader to "survive" in crazy and dysfunctional workplace.
Furthermore, the writing of this book is way too PHD-alike to tie to its "light-hearted" title.
I stopped reading it after 20 pages or less.

4 out of 5 stars Read QBQ! first.......2005-08-25

Before you read this book, you need to change your paradigm - read John Miller's "QBQ! The Question Behind the Question" first. Very helpful case study book.

      1 out of 5 stars I agree with Steven.......2004-03-19

I was sorely disappointed in this book. I figured I would learn how to deal with the dummy I've just been assigned to work for, but this is just an endless stream of anecdotes with no advice for folks like me.

      1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time.......2004-01-28

Don't waste your time with this book. It's just an endless group of unfortunate work bosses. There is no insight or help with surviving theses situations. Advice like, "You cannot be doing your job even when you are doing your job if your boss says so" in chapter one is one of the unhelpful tips the book gives. Unfortunately, this catchy title doesn't produce.

          1 out of 5 stars Not practical.......2004-05-22

I anxiously waited for this book to arrive and was disappointed. Though the material may apply to some traders, it was like reading a physics manual. Very little up to date practical info. Candlesticks are not discussed at all. This book may be OK for a casual look over, but there are far better books such as Profitable Candlestick Trading by Bigalow, Toni Turners books, Nissans Candlestick books, Elders books, The Disciplined Trader, The Market Makers Edge, and many others that get into the real meat if you want to learn the art of day, swing, and position trading. Trading is not a get rich quick scheme, it is not gambling, but rather a deliberate planned approach to trading stocks and futures for fun and profit. It takes a lot of hard work and years of study to be consistently successful. You are going to have to focus on the art of the trade, not the money to get it done. Reading all of the books you can find on the subject is definitely suggested. But this one, I cannot recommend.

1 out of 5 stars Tried to encompass a lot, achieved none.......2003-06-29

I had rated the author's first book "Trading rules: Strategies for success" with 5 stars. I never expected such a frustration with this book.

Perhaps the trader did try to make this book as a day trader's manual by including everything he deemed fit into a 322 page book: trading psychology, rules drawn from his own experience, chaos theory and in particular many TA tools like Market Profile, Elliot Wave, Gann Fan, RSI, Stochastics and so on. He then used nearly 40% of the book in 14 cases to elaborate those tools. The problem is, though I believe it's the intent of the author to make the book as concise as possible, it's simply impossible for most, even some professionals, to grasp the usage of the aforesaid TA tools. Even worse, the cases just did not help at all.

In a word, a big disappointment for this one and I suggest those who would like to give the author a try to bet on his first book "Trading Rules: Strategies for success".

          1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money as I did!.......2000-05-17

Way too much unusable information. I kept waking up throughout the book, hoping to get to the parts about day-trading I could put into practice. (It never happened)

1 out of 5 stars Too much Theory.......1999-06-28

I was looking for "How To" Day trading book. Reading this book was torture. I felt Mr. Eng was trying harder to impress upon the reader his vast knowledge of the theory of economics, rather than teaching one how to day trade. I admit, I couldn't force myself to read the whole book. By the time I finished part two, feeling I'd gained nothing out of those 186 awful pages, I moved on to more exciting authors.

1 out of 5 stars This book is soooo technical, it turns you off..........1999-06-15

This book looks good, had one or two good reviews. But I wasted my money on it, because it put me to sleep. Written for the older crowd, with techniques used in the 80's. Definetely did not help me much, even though I sadly read %70 of it.

            Book Description

For many people, a lack of knowledge and information regarding the financial industry can quickly defuse an interest in the subject. Literature on the world of finance can sometimes read like a chapter in a quantum physics book would to a first grader. The vast amount of numbers and terms that are associated with finance and investing can leave one very overwhelmed. Author Jack Katz, on the other hand, in his new book, "Capitalist Dogs," takes a slightly different approach to helping those interested in the topic grasp a better understanding about the underlying intricacies and concepts involved. Written in the style of a fable told to children, the content of "Capitalist Dogs" deals with a very complicated topic and makes it an understandable and fun adventure. With factual information presented in a fable format, the story focuses on a dream had by avery new business owner by the name of Mr. Bob Catz. Mr. Catz has recently opened a business, but is somewhat untrained to the rigorous under-sidings that go along with owning your own business. One night he has an amazing dream that takes him to a land of finance and investing. Lead on a very educational tour by a dog named Sir Real (of the Wealth Corgis breed, of course), who also happens to be a securities broker, Bob Catz comes to realize how much he did not know and how much he has to learn about his new business and the business world around him. On his tour Bob Catz meets many different animal characters, all of whom are bursting at the seams with info rmation concerning the subject of investing and finance. Many of the characters are financially modeled somehow with traits of their species or some innate quality that they possess. Dirty Haree, a little white rabbit explains to Bob about open-ended funds. Shelley, a giant leatherback turtle, talks about retirement shells, and a giant panda named Panda Monium describes the stock market when prices begin to fall. Bob also meets several very humorous parodies of famous personalities, such as Mick Jaguar, Warren Bassett, and Billy Goatz along the way.

Written in a style that is much less technical and more easily understood than other financial instruction books, "Capitalist Dogs" is guaranteed to capture the attention and educate anyone interested in the world of finance and investing. The book is loaded with tons of information that is easy to follow and provides a very entertaining and highly educational story.

            Customer Reviews:

            5 out of 5 stars I Didn't Know Jack about Finance.......2002-04-06

I need to disclose up front that Jack Katz was a friend of mine. I met him while studying for the Washington State bar exam in Seattle in 1980 and we kept in touch over the next two decades as I popped in and out of Seattle. That said, I am genuinely impressed at what he accomplishes in Capitalist Dogs.

Seldom does non-fiction succeed for the reader on so many levels. Jack looks at finance, of course, but from the perspectives of law, psychiatry, economics, political science, public relations, industry and sales. A painless way to learn a subject considered arcane to the masses (myself included), this particular gem is just as worthwhile an investment of your time for all its sparkling wordplay, characterizations and imagery.

Nor is Jack's witty effort a mere standard textbook rehash! In the wake of the Enron fiasco, it could serve as a new primer for investment. (In fact, some of his observations are positively uncanny, written as they were before that scandal.) Would it be too bold to suggest that Capitalist Dogs be assigned as a first semester text to finance majors, much as Karl N. Llewellyn's The Bramble Bush for many first year law students?

If so, some effort will need to be made to ensure that the URL web links sprinkled so generously within are kept current. Other references which may tend to date this tome are less problematic: Dr. Greenspan is likely to remain a larger than life legend for some time and the position of Chairman of the Federal Reserve as important as that of the imperial Presidency.

I will miss Jack. I knew him, but I didn't really know him. I visited Montreal with my wife last year as Jack and his wife Leslie had recommended so long ago. News of his demise came too soon afterward.

In retrospect, it was his natural enthusiam that made Jack stand out. That quality is apparent in his book as well and that is also why I can praise it so wholeheartedly. Perhaps I was overly eager to read it: I wanted to come to know Jack better than I did, but I believe that we finally succeeded in making a lasting connection.

            5 out of 5 stars Financial Fabulous.......2002-02-10

I never thought I would enjoy a book about finance until I read Capitalist Dogs - A Financial Fable. Jack Katz has written a brilliant, witty, irreverent and highly informative book about the complicated world of finance that is finally easy to understand and totally entertaining! I didn't feel as if I were wading through intellectual quicksand to be able to grasp the vast amount of information that really is necessary to become savvy about the stock market and what we are being told by those who are supposed to be "in the know". The book is filled with memorable animal characters, a la Aesop's Fables, that give substance to each concept the author explains. His animal characters provide mental portraits that enable the reader to recall difficult financial concepts through his rich visual descriptions. No sacred financial guru or ivory tower institution is spared by Mr. Katz. I have found it really useful as a reference guide as I peruse the morning financial pages. There is something in this book for everybody, from new investors to seasoned veterans. I really enjoyed this book!

From the author of two Village Voice books of the year comes a ruthless expose of the raptors at Enron. Behind the screams over workers' disappearing pensions, disappearing jobs, and disappearing CEO responsibility lies a bigger story: What Enron has done to the world.

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Follow the Trail.......2003-04-05

This is something that will not be shown on prime time television. It will not win the support of the corporate controllers who buy time and form conglomerates so that courageous stories like this will not be told, but in today's topsy turvy world, where control is amassed by every smaller numbers of greedy multinationals, this is a story that needs to be revealed in every shocking detail.

The author takes this account of appalling corporate greed to the level where it must go if the true story is to be revealed, to the linkage between large corporations and the huge international drug network. This is in turn linked to the oil network, and it in turn is attached to the warmaking machine with the chilling potential to amass fortunes by sending youngsters choked off from good jobs by greedy corporate globalism to do their fighting. Chicken hawks like Bush, Cheney, Wolfowitz and Perle cheer from the sidelines as these youngsters are sacrificed on an altar of corporate greed.

The CIA is not spared by this courageous author. In many instances it has been used to soften up economies before replacing leaders who demand a fair share of the pie for the people of their respective nations. In other times the influence is more direct, as in overthrowing democratically elected governments in Guatemala, Iran and Chile. Meanwhile the propaganda machine spiels off the message that people hate America because it is such a rich nation with prosperous and happy people. Try telling that to those who have been reduced to fragmentary existences through the oppressive yoke of globalization. Look into what happened in Russia after the old Communist bosses were overthrown.

The Enron picture is tied ever so closely to the Bush regime. While Cheney warned us that California was being torn asunder due to a lack of sufficient energy resources, the truth finally came out in a stinging government report revealing what informed sources already knew, that a savage ripoff led by the Enron brigade had fleeced California's taxpayers. Why not let these evil wrongdoers do the hard time in federal prisons rather than non-violent drug offenders who need treatment rather than prison incarceration?

These are just some of the questions arising from a detailed reading of this brilliant book. We need more courageous authors like this who are not afraid to take on the establishment. This kind of courage is what is needed to turn things around amid suffocating greed at the corporate international level. Perhaps enough courageous voices can ultimately end the tragic concept, which former President Dwight D. Eisenhower warned emphatically against, of preventive war.

                  Book Description

Alcoholism, drugs, and biker gangs are not what one would expect to find in the background of a person destined to become an internationally known motivational speaker.Yet in her starkly honest autobiography, Susan Armstrong reveals many long-hidden secrets from her past and shares her last-chance struggle for recovery.

It's hard to imagine being so addicted to substances, and so bereft of self-esteem, that living in a gang with a dysfunctional and abusive partner becomes an acceptable lifestyle. Only someone who has been there and has since reclaimed her life can share her perilous experiences with authentic memory. This riveting story, told in vivid and often disturbing detail, will leave readers with a new understanding of the compelling human need to seek approval.

Simply to have survived a life as self-destructive as the one Susan describes would make a remarkable story in itself. That she has gone on to build an enviable record of success as a corporate trainer with a long list of Fortune 100 clients makes this a truly inspirational tale. Her story offers hope to countless others who may feel their lives are without worth or promise.

An Invisible Prison is an outstanding book, it makes you think. Susan had a tough life and she has come a long way. We grow up pointing fingers, blaming and turning away from out problems, Susan finally finds who it is that caused her all the pain in her past. If others could find and accept who it is that causes all this pain, we could all move on in life. Susan has such strength to get to where she is today - I have great admiration for her and what she had been through. This book will help many others break free of their Invisible Prison.

Reviewed by Kornelia Longoria for Reader Views (2/07)

"An Invisible Prison" is the author's record of her problems steaming from alcoholism and the influence it had on her life as a teenager and as a young adult. Susan started drinking socially in her early teenage years. She started going to "biker bars," where her drinking was encouraged and where she found sponsors for her destructive habits. This led to one unfortunate relationship to another, where often she was beaten, treated as a second-category being, and became very dependent on the lifestyle she got herself into. Her many unsuccessful efforts to get sober and straighten up her life discouraged her from trying harder as she came to believe that she is meant for this lifestyle and that she cannot be any better. Working hard as a waitress and often supporting the habits of her current biker boyfriend was the essence of her life for many years. Her lifestyle became a prison for her where the bars can not be seen but it's almost impossible to get out.

The story of Susan's life is a very well-written and very moving memoir. The book shows how some decisions and actions influence not only the following days and weeks of our lives, but also very often, very many years. It tells how hard it is to overcome fears and your own insecurities and reach your own potential. It shows the cruelty in this world and harsh reality. Even though the book is very depressing and in majority full of negative events, Susan gets away from her lifestyle and becomes sober. She manages to push away her inner ghosts and change her routine for her own well-being. Susan shows the readers how amazingly strong human beings can be and how determined we can be to change things around.

I believe that "An Invisible Prison" would be great for both women and men of all ages. It's a great motivational tool to show us that even if our life is really bad, it could be much worse, but it can also be better. It's all in our hands to decide what kind of life we want to live.

Thank you Susan for sharing your story!

About the Book: "An Invisible Prison", Imagine yourself, feeling so lonely and hopeless and having not a single drop of self-worth.
Imagine that you allow alcohol to be your leader in the game of life at an age of twelve years old.
Imagine waking up and not knowing what you did or how you managed to find your way home after a party.
Imagine allowing drugs to be the only road that can take you away and free you of this black hole that you wake up to every single day and fall asleep in every single night. Imagine truly believing that you are less important than a dog and you find that abuse is the only real true feeling that you can identify with as love and affection.
Imagine that you look at your parents and sister through a glass window, waving at them as they walk past you, not even acknowledging your existence for fear of what they may never be able to understand.
Imagine having to lower your self-respect to the point of selling your flesh for three dollars a dance or being told that you can only work in a bar as a waitress or a stripper. Imagine sitting, holding your partners hand while he is having sex with another.
Imagine going to work with cuts and bruises all over your face.
Imagine feeling a man's boot almost penetrate right through your stomach.
Imagine falling down a metal stair case while you are pregnant with what would have been your first child. Imagine not even realizing the strength it takes to survive all of the above and become a woman of substance.
This is what you will read in, "An Invisible Prison". It is,"A True Story of Survival".
This is not a book that will make you smile or feel good. This book tells a story of a very young girl that confuses her acceptance in her father's eyes and allows that to remove all of her self-worth and self-esteem to grow and flower as a women should.
You will not feel good while reading this book because of the reality that it portraits in the world we live in. The abuse that you will read and imagine will make you cry. The frustration that will fill your veins when you read how Susan continues to keep herself down and returns to a world of abuse will make you want to walk away from the book. What will keep you reading on is the amazing strength and pure guts that Susan shows in her attempts to find a life that she knows is her only sanctuary. Her story of how she continues her need to survive will also keep your need to read to the bitter end in hopes that it will turn out to a happy ending, one that you will already be certain that she deserves.

Recommendation: Womensselfesteem.com highly recommends the book," An Invisible Prison: A True Story of Survival". This story was written with true genuine feelings and put together in book form with excellence.

                    Book Description

One of the least-known aspects of World War II is the internment of German "enemy aliens" in the United States. This narrative goes beyond other internment studies in its use of internee interviews and access to Justice and War Department personnel files. Fox concludes that rather than offering a reasonable assessment of the aliens' danger to United States internal security, the Justice Department incarcerated them-and excluded several hundred United States citizens-because of their German backgrounds, alleged disloyal statements and associations, socioeconomic class, or their characters and personalities.

This book is a bit on the pesamistic side, on the life of a woman in the army. It sounds as if the author had, at some points in her military career, some injustices done to her. However, it does appear as a typical in your face, yelling, army life as often portrayed on TV. True she may have had some difficulties going on in her life, but I don't think it was all to blame on the army. It sounds as if the Army, more specifically a recruitor, was not the best field for her to be in. The book is basically a tale of her troubles. It appears that the Army was trying to drum her out of the military any way they could because of her job performance. Fair or not, I can not say as it is a one sided story. If it is all true then she may have had a reason to write this book. The religious side of the book, I give her credit for. She knows what and why she believes what she does and it appears to be the only bright side of the story. I did like how her conversation threw the book with a councelor ends. This book may have been better portrayed if maybe she had help writting it and it was authored by someone else telling her story.

1970 Scribner's Sons. Paperback, 173 pages. The theme of this book was developed through a seies of lectures delivered under the auspices of the John Danz Fund at the University of Washington in Seattle in the Fall of 1969. it gives me pleasure to express to the members of the Danz family my appreciation of their interest and generosity, as well as to the administrative staff of the University, who were my hosts. In this book, I have chosen, for literary reasons extending into the seventeenth century, to use some what interchangeably the terms Halley's star and Halley's comet, since for the latter no satisfactory synonym exists. I do not think anyone will be confused by this interchange, which has stylistic advantages in a book of this nature.

                            The Invisible World John O'Donohue

The ancient Celts sensed an "invisible world" around them - the great unknown from which they came and the source of eternal wonder in their lives. Through prayer, O'Donohue teaches, we may enter directly into this secret immensity and escape the psychological prisons we create for ourselves. With prayers, blessings, poetry, and teachings.

This audio book by John O'Donohue takes us on an inspirational, and for me an unforgetable journey, into the heart of who we are. O'Donohue's poetic style comes to life in this seminar and his voice reflects his passion and commitment to sharing Celtic wisdom with us all. O'Donohue has the ability to speak about our deep spiritual yearnings, using very simple language and some beautiful anecdotal examples, that we all can relate too. What I liked most about this book was the authors experience and examples of Prayer. His relating of Prayer and its effect on the Invisible World, and on the people we pray for, made this writer yearn to pray. Another aspect of this book that gives great hope is O'Donohue's explanation of the prisons in which we put ourselves, and how we might free ourselves and renew our lives. While much of what is said is also in Eternal Echoes, another though provoking book from John O'Donahue. The beauty of 'The Invisible World' is the oral delivery ~ 'Eternal Echoes', on the other hand, can be difficult for non-academic readers to plough through (although I found it a great read). If you are looking for further motivation along your spiritual path, you will not be disappointed with this audio book.Your journey toward your divine destiny will be enhanced a hundred fold.
