Book Description
In this acclaimed new work the author argues that it should be the function of company law to promote the public interest. Examining a number of topical and controversial issues from that perspective, including the adequacy of corporate governance arrangements, the `Nexus of Contracts' theory of the company, and the role of markets, the author explains why the theory of company law has to be understood in order for the day-to-day practice of company lawyers to be fully appreciated. The book explores in some depth the protection of interests largely ignored by company law, such as those of employees and the local community, and the safeguarding of the environment from corporate abuse.
Book Description
We all know people who jump out of bed every morning, eager to start the day, so fulfilled by their personal and professional lives that they wouldn't change a thing. What's their secret? Passion. We all have it, but we don't all use it to its full potential. In The Passion Plan, Dr. Richard Chang presents seven simple steps to discovering the things we really care about, deciding where we want them to take us, and developing a plan to get us there. Through clear explanations, insightful self-assessments, and inspiring stories of people both ordinary and famous, Chang shows how the power of passion can reshape our lives.
Customer Reviews:
DISAPPOINTING.......2007-05-09
If you have read any of my other reviews, you probably noticed a lot of 3 to 5 stars. That is because I usually do a lot of research to finD only the best books, DVDs or CDs. If you already know your passion, than this might be good for you. However, I was under the impression this would help me find my passion. It doesn't. If you want to find your passion, you might consider "The Passion Test, by the Attwood's or I think you will enjoy Barbara Scher to help you find your passion.
A Solid Effort!.......2001-06-01
Richard Y. Chang describes how to find your passion - what really excites you - and use that to guide your life. He emphasizes looking to your heart to discover what your passion is and then using your head to stay in touch with reality. The book presents some nice summaries and charts that highlight key concepts. But otherwise, much of this is well-trod ground that has been covered by many other writers in the self-improvement genre, in books such as Wishcraft or with titles like "love what you do." Chang adds enlivening personal touches and examples, but otherwise, much of the book seems familiar, and even repetitious. We [...] recommend this book to the unfulfilled employee or uncertain entrepreneur, the person still searching for a passion.
More silliness.......2001-01-28
An awful lot of people are making an awful lot of money dishing out what amounts to either common sense or drivel. Here the author requires almost 300 pages to state what could have been said in 5 to 10. If this is an example of what passes for substantive executive training than heaven help us. Borrow the book from a library if you must, skim a couple of the pages and you'll have all of it. Don't waste your money.
Direction at a crossroad.......2000-09-06
We all look for direction at some point in our life. But direction is never as valuable as when you are standing at a crossroad. Similarly with this book, its content will be useful to just about anyone, at any time. But if you are standing at a crossroad (just laid-off, moved to a new location, etc.) and have an opportunity to change direction, this book is definitely for you. The Plan is simple to understand and will work. Unless you want to, no major changes will be necessary. However, be prepared to be honest with yourself; be prepared to realize that you may not know (yet) what really excites you; but best of all, be prepared to find your way to happiness.
Interesting, but not what it claims to be.......2000-09-01
This book is not what it claims to be. If I know what my passion is, I will pursue it no matter what and I don't need Richard Chang to tell me how to do that. If I don't know my passion, this book sure is no help in finding it.

Customer Reviews:
Things you never knew you wanted to know.......2005-06-03
I just gave this book to a friend of mine who is about to become a professional chef, and it seems to be a hit! As mentioned by previous reviewers, this book investigates the origins and histories of words related to food and cooking. The words are organized alphabetically, the linguistic research is well done (I just took a course in linguistics), and the author has untangled all that gnarly word history and presented it in lucid, witty prose. The tongue-in-cheek comments are reminiscent of snappy columnist or non-fiction writing, epitomized by writers like Bill Bryson. Though that flippant humour can get tiresome if you're reading the book for extended periods of time, this book is still well worth getting if you're interested in either food or words - or trivia! It is best read in short stints, it is both educational and highly entertaining, and is certainly a great resource for cocktail party conversation. I was also truly impressed by the range of words, which included those from Asian cuisines as well.

Cupboard Love:
A Dictionary of Culinary Curiosities
By Mark Morton
This is the second, revised edition of Cupboard Love and a must-own for etymologists, food etymologists in particular. In 330 pages, Morton defines origins of words such as the bain-marie, what is banyan day? How about the word, cornucopia, the corsned, hyppogastronomy or sesame.
For instance, the word, tiramisu" is: "The name of this dessert comes from the Italian phrase, tira mi su, literally meaning pick me up, probably because the coffee-soaked sponge cake provides a slight caffeine boost. "Tiramisu" began to appear in England in the early 1980s. Much earlier, in the mid nineteenth century, pick-me-up, itself emerged as a name for a stemulationg drink, one intended to perk up the imbiber.
Cupboard Love is full of these morsels, makes a lovely gift.
© Marty Martindale, 2005, Largo FL
Interesting reading for all food lovers.......2005-02-08
The original Cupboard Love was nominated in 1997 for a Julia Child award. Now, nearly eight years later, author Morton has released a new, expanded edition of the book, which delves deep into the meanings and origins of culinary word histories.
If you are a culinary historian, or even your basic foodie looking for some information on favorite foods and their history, then Cupboard Love will be a much used book on your shelf.
The book covers some words that your average culinary dictionary doesn't bother with, such as "poor boy"(a type of sandwich that gets it's name from the fact that it was all the "poor boys" - laborers - could afford to get for lunch), to popular phrases used in culinary circles, such as "piece de resistance" and "a la carte". It even covers words that you wouldn't normally think of as related to food, such as "mensa" , and even totally generic terms such as "eat". All words included in this tome are looked at in depth, and Morton goes into great detail explaining just how the words came to be, what they're related to, and sometimes, such as in the case of the aforementioned "mensa", why they became associated with food.
Cupboard Love is filled with interesting curiosities, fun facts, and occasionally the disgusting (such as the term "all nations", the meaning and story behind which almost caused me to get seriously ill, it being a term for the leftover ale, saliva, spit, and more dumped out of used glasses and mixed together for servants to drink later). Anyone interested in the backgrounds and definitions of food will find it to be a very useful addition to their culinary library.
Interesting Book.......2005-02-01
With more than one thousand culinary "word-histories", Mark Morton takes us on a journey of from where that word came. He discusses herbs and spices, everyday food and exotic food, from medieval times and abroad!
Mark Morton is an Assistant Professor of English at the University of Winnipeg in Canada. This is his second book.
Cupboard of Love has been updated from its earlier 1996 version. It was nominated for a Julia Child Award in 1997. Here, you can be taken on a journey to find where the originations of certain food and food terminologies have come from. This book is like a mini-historical tour across the globe telling us that croissants originally came from Turkey (not France) and that butteries were designed to hold wine not dairy.
This is not a cookbook. There are no recipes inside. Nor are there photographs either. This book is literally a dictionary.
If you are curious where your food has come from, or perhaps where the term "hodgepodge" has come from, then check out this book! It is really quite interesting!
A must-have book for any lover of food (or language).......2004-12-25
This book explains where food words and cooking words come from. It assumes that you already know what the food is (or, in the case of a recipe, how it's made) and focuses instead on telling you how the word originated (often many centuries ago), and how it has changed since it first entered the English language. Some of the food words that are covered have very old histories, like "aubergine," which Morton traces all the way back to ancient Sanskrit where the name originally meant "the vegetable that cures flatulence." But Morton also includes food words that have much more recent origins, like "funistrada," which orginated in the 1970s in the U.S army. A lot of geographic and cultural territory gets covered in this book, too, as Morton covers food words that English has taken from American Indian languages, Turkish, Farsi, Italian, and dozens more languages. All in all, the book covers more than a thousand food words and culinary terms, and every entry (with each entry being a good-sized paragraph in length) is totally interesting and often very humorous. The book comes with good references, too: Margaret Visser, on the back cover, calls it "erudite and entertaining" and I read a review of it by Corby Kummer (of the Atlantic) where he calls it an essential reference work for anybody interested in food. If you want a book that will tell you about an aspect of gastronomy that you may never have thought about before, then Cupboard Love, with its fascinating explanations of where food words come from, is a perfect book for you.

Customer Reviews:
Worse than the Internal Revenue Code.......1997-12-31
Granted the area of partnership taxation and S corp taxation are confusing, this book is actually even harder to understand and follow than the actual code section itself. The organization of the book is hard to follow. In programming terms, it's like a spaghetti. Links point to everywhere of the code section but does not follow a logical pattern. You're better off reading the internal revenue code itself.
Book Description
Reliable source on the federal income taxation of partners and partnerships. Text contains an authoritative summary on the organization, tax accounting, allocations, distributions, and liabilities of a partnership. Also discusses subjects such as contributed property, partner-partnership transactions, transferring interests, and what happens when a partner retires.

For a non lawyer and starting a partnership, this book was great for me to start to get the tax aspect understanding. The book constantly references the statutes which is good for me so I can cross reference.
helpful.......2006-08-14
The book simplifies tax concepts and condenses them so that the students has a better understanding of the subject.

The Amazing Common Sense Guide for Your Investment Success, John A. Thomchick presents a practical program to make either the novice investor or the long-time, frustrated investor "whole." The investor becomes whole by obtaining knowledge, diversifying, practicing money management principles and undertaking a self-examination of his own investing temperament. Dr. Thomchick first leads the reader though basic budgeting and goal setting scenarios. He then introduces a variety of investment classes, including stocks, mutual funds, bonds, precious metals, currencies, and insurance, the latter an often neglected investment vehicle. Dr. Thomchick then gives an introduction to market technical analysis, market indices and the global financial architecture. Book Description
During the past two decades there has been a growing level of concern worldwide regarding the importance of ethical issues within the conduct of behavioral sciences research. This book seeks to reflect that concern, attempting throughout to strike a balance between the rights and welfare of the participants of research and the rights of the researchers to pursue a fuller understanding of behavior. Discussion within the text ranges from problems encountered in the conduct of human subject and animal subject research in both laboratory and field settings to the issues surrounding integrity in the analysis of data and professional ethical principles. Each chapter includes illustrative case studies of ethically controversial investigations which, combined with a full bibliography, encourage the reader to more in-depth study.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent but not current.......2002-02-13
This was an excellent book and gave me a very good understanding of distributions rules prior to January 1, 2001; however, the laws have since changed and I would not buy this book today. Much of the rules explained here are still the same, but you would have to know the material you are supposedly buying this book to learn in order to know the difference. If a new edition came out, I would buy it.
Excellent Information.......2000-03-19
As always with Seymour Goldberg, the information is outstanding. I don't like the question and answer format, which I feel is an inefficient way to convey information, but others might love it. It is very difficult to acquire comprehensive information on IRA distributions and this is a very good source.
Must reading for an IRA owner turning 70 this year.......1998-07-20
Seynour Goldberg takes the reader though all the intricicies of a complicated subject and provides the information necessary to make an informed decision. The pluses and minuses of single vs joint life expectancy and term certain vs recalculation are clearly defined for the IRA owner who must make decisions regarding required minimum distributions upon reaching 70 1/2 years of age.

Book Description
Life can be a struggle for some families, and support from skilled family workers can make a real difference.
Promoting Family Change is a guide to working with vulnerable and marginalized families outside formal therapy settings. It introduces several approaches to family work that have proven to be very successful: solution-focused, narrative, cognitive, and community-building. These approaches assume that the starting point for change is the strengths and capacities of family members. The book is illustrated with detailed case studies drawn from actual practice, and it includes examples of innovative programs. It also looks at ways in which workers can incorporate these approaches into their practice to become more effective in their interventions with vulnerable families.
Promoting Family Change is a good introduction to family practice for students and a valuable reference for welfare and community workers who wish to review and improve their practice skills.

Book Description
Baron Wormser, a master of the persona poem, is well known for his empathic exploration of possible lives. This fifth collection of poetry by this "fiction writer in a poet's body," includes an examination of his own life as well.
Mulroney & Others provides glimpses of Wormser's childhood, adolescence, and adulthood, as well as accounts of Vietnam vets and draft dodgers, socialites and outcasts. Loyal readers will welcome his trademark poise, the elegant balance he achieves with understatement both metrically deft and intellectually intricate. These poems prove Anais Nin's insight that "We don't see things as they are, we see them as we are."
Wormser's invitation to engage ourselves in seeing is irresistible, especially as he models the process with such impassioned interest. "'I know,' everyone is saying at once/To one another and the word-riddled universe. . . ." he writes. His poems tempt us to trade the obscurity of facile assumption for the powerful illumination of wonder. In Wormser's words, the universe is irrefutably personal.
Baron Wormser is the author of four previous collections of poetry: The White Words (Houghton Mifflin, 1983), Good Trembling (Houghton Mifflin, 1985), Atoms, Soul Music, and Other Poems (Paris Review Editions, 1989), When (Sarabande Books, 1997), and co-author of Teaching the Art of Poetry: The Moves (Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, 1999). His poems, essays, and reviews have appeared in a wide variety of journals including The Paris Review, Sewanee Review, The New Republic, Harper's, and Poetry. He has received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the John Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. He lives with his wife in Hallowell, Maine.
"The particular gift in Wormser's work is in the narrative. . . . He is poised to record, to expose, to express, not to pounce. The language can sometimes ambush a reader with wonder, but Wormser never breaks a sweat. . . . Mulroney & Others is one of those rare books of poetry that will have resonance in the lives of nearly every reader. . . (he) mixes just the right amount of cleverness with a smart appreciation for language, humor, humanity, pain and love."-Ba

No Sugar-coated Breakfast Cereal Here!.......2000-09-12
Mulroney and Others By Baron Wormser is one of the greatest contemporary compilations of poetry that I've read in quite a while. It might be that I'm slightly bias with his work (he's taught a few classes I've attended), but the way he bluntly conveys his realist views ofthe world and the people around him blows me away. Also, many of the topics he confronts are every day problems, but made amazing with his special twist of analyzation. The only problem I can find with the book is that some of the topics are not for younger readers, and many of the poems have adult content. Overall though, a great read for any poetry lover who is willing to step past the sugar-coated world we live in today.

Book Description
The Secret Mulroney Tapes is an outrageous and intimate portrait of a Canadian prime minister, as told in his own words. There has never been a political book like this, and there will almost certainly never be another.
Peter C. Newman, the author of books about John Diefenbaker, Lester B. Pearson and Pierre Elliott Trudeau, as well as 2004’s number-one bestselling memoir,
Here Be Dragons: Telling Tales of People, Passion and Power, has done it again. He has written twenty-two books that have sold two million copies, and earned him the title of Canada’s “most cussed and discussed” political commentator. Here, his no-holds-barred profile of Canada’s most controversial – and most reviled – prime minister breaks new ground.
Compiled from years of candid, taped conversations with Mulroney and the people closest to him while he was in power, the sometimes uproarious and often disturbing interviews – 7,400 pages of transcripts totalling 1.8 million words – have been sealed until now. Stunningly indiscreet and savagely frank, Mulroney is the first prime minister to be so nakedly outspoken. Yet he is also revealed as a witty Irish charmer, ready with a quick line to raise a laugh, no matter how impudent or profane, a man as warm in private as he was defensive in the public eye.
Mulroney names the names and spills the beans about what really goes on in Ottawa, which he describes as a “sick” city that runs on “goddamned incest”: “They’re all married to one another. They’re shacked up with one another. Their wives are on the payroll of the CBC. It’s just awful.” Lucien Bouchard, his one-time soulmate, he calls “bitter and profane” and “extraordinarily vain.” He writes off his constitutional foe, former Newfoundland premier Clyde Wells, as an “unprincipled son of a bitch.” His disgust for the press is as monumental as his sense of being misunderstood, and in his eyes the Ottawa press corps are “a phony bunch of bastards” who don’t give him credit even when the world applauds him for being “one of the three men who played the most important role in the collapse of the Berlin Wall.”
Out of
The Secret Mulroney Tapes emerges a startling picture of the politician whose reign shocked and appalled and yet also revolutionized this country. No other prime minister in Canadian history aroused a stronger emotional response than Brian Mulroney. This book provides Canadians with a unique insight into the bold politician who changed their country like no other.

How 'Lyin' Brian' destroyed the Conservatives in Canada.......2005-11-17
If Brian Mulroney has any sense of gratitude at all, he will profusely thank Peter Newman for the bad language in this book because it will deftly divert public attention from Mulroney's amazing ineptitude.
"I've been manoeuvering this thing for two years, to be succeeded by Campbell," Mulroney said of Kim Campbell, who led the Conservatives from 169 seats in Parliament to 2 in the 1993 election. That, more than any four letter words, is the absolute worst language in the book. It shows Mulroney's total incompetence as a leader, and may well seal his fate as the worst prime minister in Canadian history.
Politics is all about how you treat other people.
Mulroney knew Campbell was incompetent but said she would improve because, "If you're smart, you'll grow into it. Some prime ministers have not. Dief, I think it's fair to say, did not. Dief was too old."
Well, I lived in Canada when Dief was prime minister. I voted for Dief. I agonized over his indecisions. But I don't remember The Chief leading the Conservatives from 169 seats in parliament to 2. I do remember Dief fought for his vision of Canada until the day he died. Dief never walked away from the land he loved.
Dief was indomitable. Mulroney was inept. Political biography is less about "great deeds" than the personality to succeed or fail.
The personal image of Mulroney in this book is that of someone with less rapport than a McDonald's clerk who dismisses a customer with the mandatory "thank-you-have-a-nice-day-come-again" mantra while walking away from the counter. Mulroney knew all the right words, but I couldn't find any sense of empathy. There was no inner passion about doing what is best for Canada. It's a "Me-Me-Me Generation" book about a man who seems utterly befuddled to learn that no one likes him as much as he loves himself.
Reading it reminds me of the interminable accounts of the last days of Hitler or Hussein, trapped in an underground bunker with no chance of escape. However, there's two differences: Hitler knew the end was near, and everyone was trying to escape. Mulroney, in comparison, seems clueless.
It's shattering, because I like a lot of things Mulroney tried and on occasion did, such as Meech Lake and NAFTA. His assessments of Trudeau and Chretien are right on the mark; but, as incisive as he is in assessing his antagonists, he was incapable of understanding his own strengths, weaknesses, foibles and faults.
It's rare that any journalist gets such a penetrating insight to the character of a politician. Newman had a choice of saying Mulroney was an insensitive clod with less personal charm than a dead codfish, or letting Mulroney say it in his own words. He chose the wiser course of just quoting Mulroney justly. After all, there's an old saying in politics, "Never murder a man who's committing suicide."
In Mulroney's own words, this book depicts a political career as a fatal plunge into the Politics of Me which produced the mass suicide of the Conservative Party. Mulroney made Jean Chretien look good enough to be prime minister, and Canada may never recover.

Book Description
Before the GST and before Free Trade, Brian Mulroney was a small-town boy who announced at age nineteen that he would one day be Prime Minister. This is his story.
Growing up in the remote company town of Baie-Comeau, Mulroney was immersed in Québécois culture, in a close-knit community with an enduring social order and spirit of self-help. A hardworking electrician's son, he wanted to be "the guy who makes things happen." Mulroney pursued that goal through a meteoric career as a labour lawyer, an unswerving partisan for the Conservative cause in Quebec, the president of a major corporation. In 1984, equipped with a deep understanding of Quebec, a small-town sense of social compassion, and skill as a negotiator and businessman, he was ready to take on the nation.
Informed by interviews with Mulroney, his aides and enemies, Brian Mulroney: The Boy from Baie Comeau is a remarkable portrait of the political ascent of one of Canada's most controversial Prime Ministers.

What Color is a Butterfly.......2003-06-13
I found the author's lack of writing skill distracting. Many sentences were awkwardly written. At times it is confusing which character she is writing about since she assumes the identity of each character with the pronoun "I." The redundancy of information given is appalling. Information in one paragraph is repeated in another paragraph a few pages later, almost word of word. This happens several times in the book. Did anyone edit this book?

"Your Mother was an admirable lady. She mastered her fate with determination, great willpower and a positive attitude and she was always aware that she was so fortunate to be born into this family, giving her so much love and understanding and support to develop her special talents. It was useful to me once to realize, what it means to be blind, because I really never thought of such a situation."
Wonderful Story of Creative Courage.......2002-10-22
A child without sight grows up to be a talented musician, complete homemaker, career woman and mother of three. The story of her training and over-coming visual imparement is an inspiration to everyone who reads this carefully crafted biograpy. What Color Is A Butterfly is an ispirational journey into the qualities of perception, courage and creativity. Humor softens the sadness and hope strengthens the drive to "be normal." A book that will give a lift to all who read this story.
