Customer Reviews:
This book is great for learning good habits.......2006-06-22
This book was required in one of my college classes. It teaches you how to choose goals and how to set them. It helps with the process of breaking your goals into smaller easier to manage pieces to avoid becoming overwhelmed and frustrated.
This book is a great tool for students of all ages and adults too. It helps teach good study habits which then turn into good work habits.
I would recommend this book for anyone that wants to become successful in school, work and life.
Wrong book received.......2004-10-05
What i ordered was very clear but i received a book with totally diferent ISBN #. I don't think it was an honest mistake, it's the only book they had and wanted to get rid of it. I'd never buy from these guys again.
Winning in The Game of Life.......2000-09-13
This book should be read not only by students but also by anyone who is still unsure about what they are doing and where they are going. It covers a wide range of topics and addresses serious issues that face especially the teens and young adults as they make a transition from school to society. These range from help with learning and time management to issues on sexual decisions and substance abuse. The layout and graphics make it appealing and easy to read. "Keys to Success" systematically takes student readers through their final years in schools and helps them to think seriously about their goals in school, their careers and ultimately their future lives. Coupled with questionnaires and written exercises, it really leads to greater self-awareness and confidence. I would recommend that parents of teenage children get this book for them and better still go through it with them, if their schools do not use it in their curriculum. Not only students, but anyone who still feels unsure of himself or herself could benefit from this book. We all have goals and dreams for our future. This book shows us how we can take charge and emerge winners in the game of life.

Book Description
All over Europe we witness a spectacular rise of the recourse to fundamental rights in debates on civil liability. This is part of a pervasive process of constitutionalisation, of private law in general and tort law in particular.
This publication aims at establishing a clear analysis of the nature and growth of the C-factor (C for constitutionalisation) in Germany, France, the UK and The Netherlands. This analysis will be followed by answering the questions: How are these developments to be judged? Does the C-factor seriously undermine the autonomy of private law (`The purpose of private law is simply to be private law', Ernest J. Weinrib, The Idea of Private Law)? And if so, does it matter? How are we to handle the C-factor? Should we embrace it wholeheartedly, or rather adopt a policy of being neglect or even try to eradicate it altogether?

Book Description
Commercial agency, distribution and franchising agreements form the backbone of cross-border commercial activity, and international lawyers are frequently confronted with issues relating to such agreements. This authoritative, practical reference work describes the law of the European Union relating to commercial agency, distribution and franchising, together with a detailed comparative analysis of the legislation and case law of the 15 Member States, Switzerland and Norway. Each country report follows a similar structure and classification system to facilitate quick reference and comparison between jurisdictions. Since the second edition of this work was published in 1993, the Common Market has become a reality and the Treaties of Maastricht and Amsterdam have had a significant impact on European law, making the appearance of this fully revised and updated third edition extremely timely.

Book Description
This book is a concise analytical overview of the field of corporate law. The authors start from the premise that corporate (or company) law across jurisdictions addresses the same three basic agency problems: (1) the opportunism of managers vis-a-vis shareholders; (2) the opportunism of
controlling shareholders vis-a-vis minority shareholders; and (3) the opportunism of shareholders as a class vis-a-vis other corporate constituencies, such as corporate creditors and employees.
Every jurisdiction must address these problems in a variety of contexts framed by the corporation's internal dynamics and its interactions with the product, labor, capital, and takeover markets. The authors' central claim, however, is that corporate (or company) forms are fundamentally similar and
that, to a surprising degree, jurisdictions pick from among the same handful of legal strategies--although not always the same strategy--to address the three basic agency issues.
This book explains in detail how (and why) the principal European jurisdictions, Japan, and the United States sometimes select identical legal strategies to address a given corporate law problem, and sometimes make divergent choices. After an introductory discussion of agency issues and legal
strategies, the book addresses the basic governance structure of the corporation, including the powers of the board of directors and the shareholders meeting. It proceeds to creditor protection measures, related-party transactions, and fundamental corporate actions such as mergers and charter
amendments. Finally, it concludes with an examination of friendly acquisitions, hostile takeovers, and the regulation of the capital markets. This book should be of great interest to scholars and students of corporate and comparative law and to persons interested in business, finance, and economics
who wish to deepen their understanding of corporate law.

Exccellent book, oth for lawyer and economists,

Great book.......2006-07-04
I do agree with the former reviewer. This is a great book if you do want a comparative perspective of corporate law. It is concentrating on how different legal systems have solved the same problems with minority shareholders, agnecy costs etc. with examples from Japan to US to Europe. We are using it as required reading on two different law school courses.
Work of excellene.......2006-03-20
A first time global review of corporate law explaining everything. I loved it

Book Description
In the period between the 1840s and the 1920s the British economy was transformed, from small-scale capitalism dominated by individual traders and partnerships to a complex financial structure dominated by large, joint-stock companies. The tremendous growth of big business created a world of new opportunities for criminal exploitation. The promotion and management of public companies and the trading of commercial securities proved vulnerable to the white-collar crimes of fraud and embezzlement. Problems of financial fraud were exacerbated by a climate of laissez-faire which championed the most permissive commercial legislation in the world, and white-collar crime wreaked havoc on the modern British economy. This new book examines the spread of white-collar crime from the Victorian period to the early twentieth century and offers a new perspective on modern scandals.

An Introductory Guide to EC Competition Law and Practice
ASIN: 0199244014 |
Book Description
Protecting economic competition has become a major objective of government in Western Europe, and competition law has become a central part of economic and legal experience. The competition law of the European Union has played a key role in the success of European integration during the last four decades, and it is likely to do so in the future. In recent years, national competition laws have also become increasingly important, often creating tensions between national-level and European-level regulation. Yet, despite its importance, images of European experience with competition law often remain vague and are sometimes dangerously distorted. This book examines European experience in protecting competition, analysing its dynamics, revealing its importance and highlighting the political and economic issues it raises.

Patent Searching: Tools & Techniques
ASIN: 019929206X |
Book Description
Why does society allow, or even encourage, private appropriation of inventions? When do patents encourage competition, when do they hamper it? How should society design the compromise between the interest of the inventor and the interest of the users of patented inventions? How should the patent system adapt to new technological areas? These questions and many more are addressed by the authors in this groundbreaking analysis of the economics behind the European patent system. Beginning with the history and principles of the patent system, the book then examines the economic effects of patenting on innovation and the diffusion of technology and growth. Throughout the book the theory and the reality are discussed alongside real world examples and comparison between the European, USA, and Japanese patent systems.

Also liked the red tag sale price on his book .
More than several chapters are worth the price of book;
like details in ''A reation in a bull market and a decline in a bear market are Not one and the same. Thank you Bill Eng
No rules, just random musings.......2001-08-28
I don't believe that the other review for this book is legitimate, which is why I am writing this one. I did not find this book very useful. The material is dated, and the "rules" are really just a collection of thoughts the author has had about the market -- nothing useful for the non-floor trader. I recommend checking this one out of the library before you buy.
More profitable insights and techniques.......1997-07-13
The original Trading Rules gave me a bible of rules to use when looking at markets. This one goes one step further by offering even more insight into market strategies employed by the market insiders. Eng's explanation of stock splits as a form of revisionist history shows how the big boys really use stock splits to rewrite their original costs ... and screw the public ... is an insightful chapter. Eng's use of arbitrage clearly explains how I can use it outside of the markets! Other chapters are just as valuable to making money. In fact, no other book has portrayed the game played against the public as this one book by Eng. Eng's twenty years of market experience certainly shows up here. This is for today what Reminiscences of a Stock Operator was to investors and traders of the 1920s

Obtaining unbiased information on stocks you want to trade, much like getting an impartial mechanic to examine a prospective used car, could mean the difference between failure and success. In fact, claims Craig Gordon, head of a firm that specializes in independent data digging, methodical "market checking" actually "increases the chance of being right by 5 percent to 10 percent on the buy side and 15 percent to 20 percent when selling a stock." Whether those numbers are accurate or just hyperbolic, Gordon and financial journalist Stephen Kindel offer solid suggestions for gathering and assessing such real-world information in Off the Record. After some contextual discussion on traditional sources of investing info--company management, competitor management, Wall Street analysis, corporate and government reports--the book presents details of a consumer version of Gordon's commercial system. Encapsulated in easily understood steps like "Find the Experts" (via the 10 Rules of Marketplace Relations), "Finding the Unusual" (Seeing the Forest, the Trees, and the Path), and "Observe the Everyday" (Invest in What You Know), it outlines a credible method for tracking individual companies and their industries before news surfaces in the public domain. Diligently undertaken and combined with traditional research methods, it could indeed boost portfolio performance. --Howard Rothman
Book Description
A Wall Street maverick shows investors how to find the next Home Depot, Cisco, or Microsoft -- before the Wall Street establishment.
When it comes time to making a major purchasing decision -- a car or house, say -- most people will do their homework and find sources of independent information to help determine whether it's a good buy. The same is true when you face a serious medical decision. Would you rely on someone touting Dr. X's skills on a television show and then call up the good doctor to arrange for an operation? Not likely.
Then why don't we do the same kind of thorough kick-the-tires research when it comes to making investing decisions that will have a big impact on our financial future?
Many of us either don't know how or don't think we have the time. We rely instead on those we think are the experts -- the big brokerage houses, for example. But Craig Gordon has a little secret to share with you. Too many so-called investing experts don't do their homework either, making due with company announcements and meetings with management for their information and recommendations about whether to buy a stock. They're not doing marketplace checks and talking with customers, suppliers, and competitors to see what is really happening in the market.
By the time a stock is being touted by one of the big brokerage firms or stories start to circulate in the investing media, the game is over. What was a great value becomes overpriced and known by just about everyone. The secret to making money is to do it the old-fashioned way: take the pulse of the marketplace, gather data, and spot trends -- not by relying on tips and speculation.
Home Depot, not so long ago, was a mere four-store chain in Atlanta that started to expand into the Florida market. At the same time, the do-it-yourself trend was taking off, and those investors who had reliable information about the quality of Home Depot's management and the response by consumers to this new kind of store were able to make a lot of money -- much more money than those who waited until Home Depot was a household name and analysts were making enthusiastic predictions in the media.
There is a method to finding the next Home Depot, Cisco, or Microsoft. Craig Gordon shows you how to do it by sharing his secrets of profitable intelligence-gathering. He and his team at OTA-Off-the-Record Research have been turning up the trends and shifts in the marketplace before Wall Street even figures out what is going on. In fact, leading Wall Street firms hire him to tell them what is happening so they can decide what to buy or sell. Gordon's system is a method in the tradition of Beat the Street by Peter Lynch and The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham. And it's a method investors can use to get results that beat market averages.
Download Description
By the time a stock is being touted by one of the big brokerage firms or talked up (or down) by the chattering class who fill the air waves of the financial journalism shows, the game is over. What was a great value becomes overpriced and known by just about everyone. The secret to making money in the market is to do it the old-fashioned way: taking the pulse of the marketplace, spotting trends, and gathering data -- not by relying on tips and speculation. For years Craig Gordon has been "kicking the tires" and doing homework for many of the most important firms on Wall Street. Now he shares his secrets of profitable intelligence gathering with the rest of us. We find out, for example, how he knew that the stock of Caterpillar, Inc. would fall in November 1999 or that the stock of Nokia was a great buy because of their new wireless handset product. In the tradition of Beat the Street by Peter Lynch and The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham, Off the Record provides a method investors can use to get results that beat market averages
Customer Reviews:
Investor's secrets for discovering great stocks.......2001-11-09
Craig Gordon's Off The Record presents the investor's secrets for discovering great stocks which are underrated or misunderstood by the majority of Wall Street investors. Most don't know how to thoroughly research such stocks and by the time knowledge becomes public, it's too late to profit. This provides many practical keys to such initial analysis.
Off the Record should be Off the Shelf.......2001-10-04
Off the Record should be relegated to stay off the shelf. This book is a trite and an offensive advertisement for the authors own company the book is filled with conflicts of interest. A self promoting waste of time.
Save your Money - read one of Peter Lynch's books instead.
Drivel.......2001-08-22
Utter tripe. Save your money - the 'advice' that Mr. Gordon wants to sell you isn't worth the paper it's printed on. Pick up the Peter Lynch text for some practical advice on wise investing.
Average Book - buy 1 up on wall street instead.......2001-07-26
Save yourself some money and buy One Up on Wall Street. Peter Lynch does a better job of explaing investing and using common sense. This OTA book is OK, but why spend the money when you can get a better book cheaper. A lot of this book talks about how his company informs the institutional investor and comes off as add for his company. His methods are good, but most people can not use them to the extent that is necessary.
Detailed Instructions for Doing Fundamental Stock Analysis.......2001-07-23
Many investors focus their attention on Wall Street to find stock investing ideas. By reading what sell-side analysts have to say, what data services and newspapers provide, and looking at technical charts, they buy and sell securities. In Off the Record, you will learn how to move out of Wall Street to look at competitors, the marketplace served by companies, their managements, and unusual factors to locate the best stocks to buy and sell.
This book is based on the experiences of Craig Gordon in doing similar analysis for his firm, OTA/Off the Record Research. The purpose is "to give you -- the individual investor -- the skills to differentiate between whare are irrelevant and what are important, unique observations to help you buy or sell stocks." To do this, the book helps "you structure questions that confirm or dispute your investment thesis, to find useful sources to talk to, and to quickly interpret the information you gather." The drawback is that the process does "take a lot of effort." As a result, you are encouraged to pursue this process with other people, possibly including the members of an investment club.
The suggestions are solid. The details are helpful. You can make this work. Most institutional investors aren't paying attention to these factors, especially on smaller capitalization companies.
Let's be realistic though. Unless you really like doing this kind of detailed research, it will never happen. You will start, and soon slough off. That can be dangerous if you stop paying attention and a stock weakens. Since Mr. Gordon recommends that you take a concentrated position in a few stocks, you could get hurt in the process. Even if you keep it up, you may not be a very good analyst.
If you are an average investor, this is probably not a good program for you. The book should have put this concept into more of a context. It would be all right for a very small portion of your money, until you get a sense of how good you are at it over a number of years. Most people won't be very effective. For those people, I still recommend a bundle of low-cost indexed mutual funds. I graded the book down one star for this weakness.
On the other hand, if you always wanted to know more about how to follow Peter Lynch's advice and invest intelligently in what you know, this book will take you much further than you would have made it on your own. I do suggest that you use these methods to supplement whatever you do that has worked well for you over many years, rather than to use the book to totally replace your current methods. Keep in mind that a great company may be a lousy stock investment.
I completely agree with Mr. Gordon that the "research" coming out of Wall Street brokerage firms is weaker and more suspect than it has been in many years. Be careful!
After you finish reading this well-constructed set of thoughtful instructions, I suggest you think about where else people tend to leap in before looking hard enough. How could couples thinking about marriage better assess their future prospects together? How can you learn if a new diet will help your health without trying it? How can you make better decisions about what movies to see?
Learn to construct questions and seek sources to help you anticipate what will happen . . . it beats the school of hard knocks by a wide margin!

Guide to the Form 5500 Series -- 2000 Edition for 1999 Plan Years, provides plan administrators concise, complete explanations of the new forms, schedules, questions and instructions they face in filing the revamped Form 5500.@!
Employers use Form 5500 to fulfill annual reporting requirements for their employee pension, welfare and fringe benefit plans. The U.S. Department of Labor, in conjunction with the IRS and Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation, dramatically revised the 1999 Form 5500 -- filed in 2000 by most plans -- making completing and filing the form more difficult than ever.
Written by Valeri Stevens, a widely respected practitioner and lecturer on the Form 5500, Guide to the Form 5500 Series -- 2000 Edition for 1999 Plan Years walks filers step-by-step through the Form 5500 and its accompanying schedules.
This new, 300-page softbound book addresses such issues as:
-- the revamped filing requirements under the new ERISA Filing Acceptance System (EFAST), including the new form EFAST-I
-- the five new schedules created this year (Schedules D, H, I, R and T)
-- changes to schedules A, C and G
-- using the new "plan characteristics" codes
-- new rules for summary annual reports (SARs)
The resource also features blank copies of the new form, NAIC insurer codes and original DOL and IRS regulations and guidance.

Book Description
Chiang Ching-kuo, son and political heir of Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek, was born in 1910, when Chinese women, nearly all illiterate, hobbled about on bound feet and men wore pigtails as symbols of subservience to the Manchu Dynasty. In his youth Ching-kuo was a Communist and a Trotskyite, and he lived twelve years in Russia. He died in 1988 as the leader of Taiwan, a Chinese society with a flourishing consumer economy and a budding but already wild, woolly, and open democracy. He was an actor in many of the events of the last century that shaped the history of China's struggles and achievements in the modern era: the surge of nationalism among Chinese youth, the grand appeal of Marxism-Leninism, the terrible battle against fascist Japan, and the long, destructive civil war between the Nationalists and the Communists. In 1949, he fled to Taiwan with his father and two million Nationalists. He led the brutal suppression of dissent on the island and was a major player in the cold, sometimes hot war between Communist China and America. By reacting to changing economic, social, and political dynamics on Taiwan, Sino-American rapprochement, Deng Xiaoping's sweeping reforms on the mainland, and other international events, he led Taiwan on a zigzag but ultimately successful transition from dictatorship to democracy.
Jay Taylor underscores the interaction of political developments on the mainland and in Taiwan and concludes that if China ever makes a similar transition, it will owe much to the Taiwan example and the Generalissimo's son.
Customer Reviews:
A good case of historian, not journalistic work. I actually read it all........2006-05-26
I enjoyed reading it. Given the busy schedule, I myself find it amazing actually having finished the whole book.
I like the matter-of-fact'ly attitude and the author's historical perspective, and that adds credibility to his research and work.
The personal encounters and rapports by those early makers and shakers were very facinating. Some documents, as the author put it, are still not released yet and we have to wait some more. The file on the last encounter between Stalin and CCK before CCK returned to China was one of them. What exactly was communicated and expressed, and what was truly in their minds? The only early ally of Chinese struggle against Japanese invasion was Russia? With real airplanes, pilots and so on? This part was never played out hard in KMT/Taiwan's history lessons. Don't know how the CCP/Mainland portrait that part of the history *today*. Obviously, Stalin has his reasons and he was not just charitable in heart. The Great Terror executed 800,000 in the USSR and is more than how many Russians killed in the first two years of WWII. What a contrast!
It makes you think how the turns of events gets to us here today as an individual and as communities.
Leave the rhetoric to people who cannot think and reflect and have preconceived notions and unshakable emotions, and read this book with the feel of a by-stander.
The Kannan Model is a fairy tale........2004-01-31
Taiwan is a hostage of CCP China and KMT mainlander. Taiwanese men were drafted to serve in the KMT military for two to three years. They were trained and told in preparation to recover the mainland for about thirty-five years. How many man-year of Taiwanese are at the mainlander's disposal, not to mention the casualty during the conflicts? The mainlanders shall appreciate Taiwanese's sacrifice instead of asking Taiwanese to thank the two Chiang's.
I am really enjoying reading this book not because of the young Chiang's romantic encounters. I learned a lot of facts that CCP and KMT do not want Taiwanese and Chinese to know. I am especially interested to know that United States considered a separate Taiwan (page 201) or Two Chinas was an option in 1950. Even Mao will accept that solution at that time. If Chiang accepted this offer, then there is no such messy issue across Taiwan Strait. As it is mentioned in the book Chiang had no will to attack mainland because he knew he will be defeated . But he kept pretending he will. Of course if he accepted two China's Chiang will not be able to lead the two million mainlanders and he lost the ground to be the "forever" leader of Taiwan. As a matter of fact Ching-Kuo was making an arrangement for his father's refugee in philippine if the communist came to Taiwan. What a great son he is!
The economy success of Taiwan shall attribute to the effort of the hard working people of Taiwan not the Chiang's. It is not until 1972 all resources of Taiwan was devoted for the military preparation for the fighting back to mainland. Ten Major Development Project is the first important thing happen to Taiwan's modernization. But as usual these projects also served as an opportunity to nourish KMT' and his friend's pockets. It also enabled Chiang to place his loyal followers such as retired military and party staffs so that to consolidate his power.
When I was in high school every classmate was told by the mainlander teacher that you would be appointed as a county supervisor in China if KMT recovered mainland. I was wondering why I would like to govern the place and people I do not know. KMT did not learn the lesson in Manchuria (Page 137). What CCK said to his mainlander senior officers at Sun-Moon lake retreat proves that he is one of the exception (page 282).
The greatest leader in the Chinese history.......2002-03-24
President Chiang Ching-Kuo was the greatest leader of China who started Taiwan miracle. If there was no President Chiang Ching-Kuo, we people in Taiwan could never have a life like today. I certainlly hope people can read the history fairly!!
Fascinating portrayal of a statesman.......2002-02-15
Jay Taylor's matter of fact approach, he tries not to cast judgement on all of the people portrayed here, provides a pretty interesting of CCK's fascinating life. What emerges is basically at first a rather impressionable young man who was caught up in one of the 20th Century's great power plays. The period of his Soviet activities is especially fascinating, especially his commitment to Bolshevism and apparent intention to remain in the USSR and seek candidacy in the CPSU. As an aside, the revelation that Lee Tung Hui was once a candidate member of the CCP is also interesting viewing his present activities. In the end CCK was obedient to his father's wishes and carried out his filial duties, never disrespecting his father or his legacy. The book is very fair to CCK, balancing his personal feelings with what his father's legacy saddle him with. Taylor's assessment that the best chance for rapproachment between the CCP and KMT was when CCK and Deng were at their twilight and that it was a shame that CCK left the scene much too early to finish his job is pretty much on the mark. I wonder how he would look upon the current developments on Taiwan and in China, but I think history will regard him very favorably as future generations realize what he accomplished.
He's a dictator , no doubt ........2001-01-25
As a Taiwanese,I have to point out that this book is "NOT" a fair and accurate accounts of Chiang Ching-Kuo. He's a dictator , put a lot of dissidents into jails, many people died because of his harsh ruleing style. And as a president , he was never really elected by a democratic process, there's "No" democratic election until his death. All these things are ingored or downplayed in this book. As a taiwanese,I'm truely dispointted about this book.

A reflection of one of life's problem.......2000-08-30
After I read the book, my friend my lover my husband. I had to think about it for awhile and shared it with another male friend of mind and we talked about it. Sharing each others thoughts of the book, because it was about a black male who left his family for another women. But as we continued to talk about it that man her husband can be any one of my friends, uncle, cousins or my dad. It's a story of her husband because he was the one who left her. And finally, we are thankful that there it really is some black women who do stand behind their mates. My sister I hope I will meet someone strong like you when I am grown, keep on keeping on.
Noble Topic but Poorly Written.......1999-12-16
My Friend My Lover My Husband covers a timely and important problem many of us may face - drug addiction by a spouse. However, the structure and lack of good editing/proofreading made this book a chore to read. Full of grammatical errors and typos, my attention was constantly pulled from the story and the author's experience. Written in a rambling style, I had problems following the story's timeline. In a nutshell, this book is just poorly written. Many people may have a story pertinent to others but maybe every story should not be told.
I DO ADMIRE A PERSON WHO OVERCOME OBSACLES & SUCCEED.......1998-04-03
I WAS HESITANT ABOUT READING THE BOOK MY FRIEND MY LOVER MY HUSBAND. I BROWSE THROUGH THE BOOK AND IT CAUGHT MY EYE AS WELL AS MY ATTENTION. I ALWAYS LOOKED AT MY MOTHER AS BEING STRONG, BUT I READ ABOUT SOMEONE WHO SHARES SOMETHING IN COMMON WITH MY MOTHER.........GOD BLESS YOU AVIS LAMB BROWN
SO REAL.......1998-03-30
SUCH A REAL STORY, IF I DIDN'T READ THE BOOK I WOULDN'T HAVE BELIEVED IT. I MET THE AUTHOR AT A BOOK SIGNING, SHE HAD SUCH A BEAUTIFUL SPIRIT....
I SURVIVED A CRACK ADDICT.......1998-03-29
