Mathematical Methods for Economics (2nd Edition)
ASIN: 0631208364 |
Book Description
This innovative text grounds the economic analysis of labor markets and employment relationships in a unified theoretical treatment of labor exchange conditions. In addition to providing thorough coverage of standard topics including labor supply and demand, human capital theory, and compensating wage differentials, the text draws on game theory and the economics of information to study the implications of key departures from perfectly competitive labor market conditions. Analytical results are consistently applied to contemporary policy issues and empirical debates. The text is supplemented by text boxes that illustrate key concepts with real-world applications, chapter appendices that explore technical material in greater depth, and end-of-chapter study questions that encourage students to apply, extend, and critically evaluate the theories under study.

West Point Leadership Lessons shows how the leadership principles taught at West Point can be applied to people who are managers in business and beyond. The management lessons begin with West Point's motto: "Duty. Honor. Country."
Spending time on each of these three words, the book first looks at Duty from the standpoint of embracing that rare sense of personal responsibility -a trait sorely lacking in today's world of blame and victimization. It considers Honor in light of today's corporate integrity failures. And it defines Country as being part of something bigger than oneself and belonging to an entity where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, providing inspiration and contribution. The book taps into the traditions, customs and eccentricities of the academy, as well as the lessons learned by today's West Pointers in combat, politics and business.
Customer Reviews:
Ok as a leadership book, but should tell more on how the Academy works the West Pointers out.......2006-12-20
One chapter at a time, the author elaborated his "Ten Keys to West Point Success" (duty, honor, country, mission, insight, execution, strategy, proficiency, loyalty and change) with histories of Eisenhower, Patton, MacAurthur and many successful West Pointer turned managers in a well organised manner. For example, in Chapter One Duty, the author stated, with three to four pages and relevant questions for each point below, that the West Pointer 1) asks for responsibility, 2) embraces the leader's role, 3) refuses to hide behind meetings and policy, 4) understands that big challenges brings big gratification, 5) is occasionally thrust into a leadership position, 6) says, "No Excuse, Sir!" 7) owns his failures. Quite standard approach, you may say, but I do like the author's writing and presentation skill. However, there's one major drawback. As some reviewers suggested, more could be told of how those youngsters are molded into true good West Pointers in the Academy. The apparent absence of such deserved a deduction of one star. Another one was cut for the insufficiency of war time big stories of how non general grade West Pointers lead. (In that respect, I strongly recommend Secrets of Special Ops Leadership by William A. Cohen) Anyway, it's a helpful and enjoyable read, but not on the top priority list.
p.s. As usual, below please find my favorite passages for your reference.
The West Pointer lets his need define him, sets the example, gets dirty, makes others care without ordering them to do, is sometimes hated but always respected and understands the power of symbolism. Chapter Five Execution
The West Pointer is constantly seeking self improvement, is technically and tactically proficient, shares what he learns, keeps everyone informed, reads and has a hobby. Chapter Eight Proficiency
Unconvincing.......2005-10-04
Slow, unconvincing, self-congratulatory, not recommended. There. All my thoughts on this book in five words.
Mind-stimulating.......2005-08-31
I have two things to say about this book: On the minus side, the book felt like talking to an old soldier about "how they did things back then (at the academy)" and "how corrupt civilians are" (sigh!). On the plus side (and this one weights heavier in my opinion)while the "lessons" in the book are not 100% applicable to the "real world"(!), they are really mind stimulating in the sense that they challange you to look at leadership in a very different, innovative way. So, if you don't mind a grumpy old man :), I strongly suggest you read this book. There is a great chance that you will end up with some new ideas that may not be even in the book.
Insightful!.......2005-08-22
Author Scott Snair got admitted to West Point Military Academy, the U.S. Army's elite university, the hard way: rising through the enlisted ranks until he was almost too old to qualify for admission. He rose to become the president of his graduating class. Because he is a Desert Storm veteran, Snair's sincerity is beyond question. His book, if not distinctive, is as solid as the paint job on an M1-A1 Abrams tank and rolls sturdily through a market filled with books that extend the military leadership model into the realm of business. Although Snair's efforts to apply military lessons to business situations seem strained, his anecdotes are interesting and his principles are rock-solid and time-tested. He believes in establishing your leadership chops by seeking additional responsibility, and in fulfilling your commitments with honor and integrity. We salute that and agree that his book will help you be a better leader. Professionals with an interest in the military will find it particularly engaging.
Outstanding book for all to enjoy.......2005-08-02
I ordered this book because I graduated with the class of '88 and knew the author. I thought I would just read it and see what he had to say about our Alma Mater and how it relates to big business. Although I figured it would be good reading, I wasn't prepared to be blown away. What a great book! It is straight forward, with short chapters and lively stories to capture your attention, and facilitate the learning process, grad or no grad. The book is an easy read, written with no pretense or air of superiority, and can be understood by all. There is just good common sense advice, that unfortunately escapes most upper level management types. All business CEOs and any one in a management role shold read this and take it to heart. The subject matter can be applied to most any situation and the questions at the end of each chapter wrap everything up succinctly and would be great for in-service training. Managers, young and old, should read this, absorb it, and apply it in order to run a better business.

Book Description
As fresh foods and farmers' markets gain influence, edging out the overprocessed and supersized from our diets, everything old--and bursting with flavor--is new again, and Americans are turning to time-honored skills like pickling and preserving to wake up their palates. Here, in a current guide that calls upon the newest safety and health information while also updating recipes for modern tastes, Anne V. Nelson walks readers through every step of the process.
Nelson explains why preserving foods at their freshest yields such great-tasting results, and how the salt and vinegar that keep foods fresh also add distinctive flavors. She discusses techniques, equipment--much of which readers will already have in their kitchens--and makes a convincing case for adding these techniques and recipes to a varied, modern diet. Nelson gives hints on choosing produce, recycling jars, making crisper pickles, saving soft jelly, and more.
She starts with preserving-influenced recipes that can be made in an afternoon and eaten that evening--refrigerator pickles, marinated vegetables, homemade horseradish--and works up to blood-orange marmalade, bread-and-butter pickles, and pickled watermelon rind. A global survey, the book includes sweet Cantonese pickles, Moroccan preserved lemons, European sauerkraut, and Central American hot pickled peppers. Nelson also explores herb-infused vinegars, fruit-infused vodka, and jellied wine, plus fruit preserves, jellies, jams, and butters.
Modern cooks don't need to know how to pickle or make jams and jellies. So the recipes here are designed for those who want to learn preserving techniques, those who enjoy the play of bright acids and bold spices in combination with the freshest ingredients. THE NEW PRESERVES is a definitive guide, taking an up-to-date, twenty-first-century approach to an ancient art of the kitchen.

Old concept, Fresh Take, Fab. Results.......2007-05-24
Who wants to measure bushels of apples? Or to make a basement's worth of strawberry jam? This author takes the wonderful part of "from your home" back to a "reality" in the busy world that we live in. What a treat to be able to easily and conveniently make my own jellies for my family. Smart, practical, delicious, easy. Only 4 of the many reasons to buy this book.
Inspired.......2007-05-21
Who knew there could be so many clever and interesting ways to make jams and pickles. My mom taught me to make rasberry jam years ago but this book has a fresh take on the classics. Recommended!
Wonderful!.......2007-05-21
I love this book. The recipes are original, the presentation is lovely, and the results are delicious. Everything I've tried so far has been a big hit.

Reviewed by Olivera Baumgartner-Jackson for Reader Views (11/06)
Anne V. Nelson's "The New Preserves" is an inspiring and extremely useful book. Starting with an introduction where she explains why fruits and vegetables should be preserved even nowadays when we can buy most produce year round, she guides the reader from the basics of the preserving to the actual recipes and even suggestions for further reading.
In the "Basics" section she'll teach the reader all one needs to know about how preserving works, what are the key ingredients, what kind of equipment would be needed as well as where to find all of the ingredients and equipment. She also adds a bunch of truly useful and no-nonsense tips and tricks. (Did you know which end of the cucumber you should slice off if you want extra crispy pickles? Get the book - this is just one of many useful tips in it...)
The following four chapters focus on recipes, divided by the kind of preserving used. The first batch of recipes deals with "Instant Gratification," which includes such varied items as marinades, refrigerator pickles, salsas, relishes, fruit syrups, Jello's and more. All of the recipes are extremely well explained and easy to prepare and the results can be eaten almost immediately. This would be a great start into the pickling world if you've never attempted any such items before.
Next on the list are pickles and relishes. If the word pickle brings to mind cucumbers only, you definitely need to read this book - you'll be absolutely amazed at the items that could and should be pickled -- Pickled pears or watermelon rinds, anybody?
The book continues with "Staying Sweet," by which Anne V. Nelson means jams, jellies and other fruit preserves. The ones that I am most tempted by and will have to attempt to make when good, ripe fruit is available are the fruit butters. They sound very much like a sophisticated, adult-geared version of your usual jams. Next summer they are going to get a test run in my kitchen.
The last chapter deals with flavored vinegars and alcohol infusions. If you've ever looked at those products in the stores, and decided that they sound interesting, but are just a bit too pricey for you taste, you'll be pleasantly surprised to discover how easy they are to make at home. You'll be able to dazzle both family and guests alike with some of your creations from this chapter for sure.
If this book whetted your appetite for more related reading, there is a nice list of suggested additional reading provided at the very end.
I found this book well written, informative and warm. The recipes were super easy to follow and written in an extremely organized manner. While I enjoyed the drawings and the unusual orange color of the print, I do wish that the book would include photographs showing what the finished preserves look like. All the little additional tips and tricks alone would be worth the price of this book. This should be a must read - and buy! The New Preserves" is for anybody who enjoys cooking and who cares about healthy, high quality food items.
Book Description
An unprecedented book on option pricing! For the first time, the basics on modern option pricing are explained ``from scratch'' using only minimal mathematics. Market practitioners and students alike will learn how and why the Black-Scholes equation works, and what other new methods have been developed that build on the success of Black-Shcoles. The Cox-Ross-Rubinstein binomial trees are discussed, as well as two recent theories of option pricing: the Derman-Kani theory on implied volatility trees and Mark Rubinstein's implied binomial trees. Black-Scholes and Beyond will not only help the reader gain a solid understanding of the Balck-Scholes formula, but will also bring the reader up to date by detailing current theoretical developments from Wall Street. Furthermore, the author expands upon existing research and adds his own new approaches to modern option pricing theory. Among the topics covered in Black-Scholes and Beyond: detailed discussions of pricing and hedging options; volatility smiles and how to price options ``in the presence of the smile''; complete explanation on pricing barrier options.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2007-04-07
I loved the way the author has started from Basic principles on Options and Mathematical concepts. This makes it a good option for newbies.
Excellent book on option pricing.......2007-02-26
This book was well written. It is easy to understand. I believe that it is especially helpful for anyone who wants to know more about option pricing.
excellent mathematical approach to options pricing.......2007-01-16
I searched for hours trying to find a resource that would teach options pricing from a pure mathematical point of view. I read several "duds", but this one was a winner. The text focuses on the Black-Scholes theory in pure mathematical terms. This book is geared towards someone who has a solid math background (you are fluent with e^x, binomial trees and basic statistics). This also explained a lot of background concepts in options for the majority of us who don't do this for a living (put-call parity, differences between US and european options, implied volatility and hedging strategies). This book has opened my eyes to a lot of nuances in options pricing.
This book is challenging to read. To understand all the specifics, you have to read it slowly like you would a college textbook. Without studying every equation in detail, gaining a general "big picture" understanding of how and why the prices move gives you valuable insight to where a stock is headed. If you can evaluate the "theoretical price" of an option, and gain information explaining why the theoretical price differs substantially from the actual price (in some cases, the two are over 1000% apart), you can develop a more accurate risk-profile for that stock than the public, or profit from the mispricing of options.
One of the best book to understand option pricing models.......2007-01-12
This is one of the best books on quantitative finance and helps readers to develop an intuition of the subject, which is more important as this will help the reader to understand and apply finer points and prepares the base to build further
Dynamite Theory Book .......2006-02-19
This book is extremely well written and very useful to me in that it provided the theoretical basis for option pricing. It also pointed out the theoretical limitations of Black Scholes and went on to discuss some of the later theories to improve option pricing. I obatined an Excel spreadsheet from a guy (Hoadley) in Australia which does all the mathematical details in the book plus a lot more. I'd recommend anyone interested get the book, and if you want to play with the numbers and concepts more you can with the spreadsheet functions. The theory presented in the book is more than enough though for most (I'm an engineer and like to understand why things work the way they do.) This book was one of the few that I made extensive notes in while reading it and tabbed the pages. I'd reveiw more specifics but a friend is presently reading it.
Book Description
Also available for students of the markets, an interactive software and workbook toolkit filled with exercises for solving option pricing problems. The software (Windows and Mac compatible) contains all of the pricing models in Black-Scholes and Beyond and is programmed to allow ``numerical experimentation'' with the models. These detailed exercises will guide the reader through the ins and outs of options pricing and can be used with the diskette and/or calculator.

For years, it was hard not to make money in the stock marketthen suddenly, investors began asking "Now what do I do?" With high-tech stocks fizzling and utilities and blue chips falling to embarrassing lows, investors watched retirement dreams change as accounts reversed double-digit growth rates. The choices facing investors are no longer clear cut. Convert everything to cash? Mutual funds? Value stocks? Real estate? Bonds? Add the voices of the daily business news which sound like the end of the world is near and it's no wonder investors are confused. Your goal in a bear market is to hold your own and position yourself to take advantage of an emerging bull market.
Customer Reviews:
Avoid! Superficial, Endorses Buy-N-Hold.......2002-04-23
This book is very limited and superficial. Options are not even discussed, and the author endorses the thoroughly discredited buy-n-hold strategy which always leads to huge losses in bear markets. Much better books are: Charles Caes "Tools of the Bear" (well worth the hassle of buying used), Sy Harding's
"Riding the Bear" and Scott Fullman's options book.

Take charge of your life - explore your options!.......1998-01-07
Highlighting actual professionals working in the field of family and consumer sciences (home economics) was the most interesting part in writing this book. Through the many profiles, it is evident that the careers in this field are extensive and interesting. They include the occupations of teaching and education but much more. For example, the traditional subject areas (foods and nutrition, clothing and textiles, child development, housing and interiors, human relationships, health and family living) are explored in each of five career fields: business, education and communications, human services, science and technology, and the arts. The pros and cons of entrepreneurship and types of businesses that lend themselves well to self-employment are included.
In addition to spotlighting actual careers, thirteen chapters cover general career education information, such as choosing a career, developing skills for job success, and finding and keeping a job. These chapters incorporate the skills that employers look for in new employees.
Careers in Focus - Family and Consumer Sciences is a textbook intended for secondary study, as well as vocational and technical education studies. However, its information is specific to anyone who is choosing a career, finding a job, and/or wanting to be successful in the workplace.
My background is in education. I have taught in Missouri and Wisconsin schools for over 25 years. My special interest in the field of family and consumer sciences has inspired me to write several cookbooks and guides to nutrition and physical firness.
May this book inspire you to choose a career that will be right for you!

Book Description
The Hand of God is a non-fictional, compelling account of John Keating’s survival and recovery after accidentally contacting 16,000-volt Swedish railroad power line. It is an inspiring story of courage, determination, and the power of love. The story traces his journey from the accident scene in the Swedish mountains, through his lengthy hospitalization and rehabilitation in Sweden, to the family’s return to the United States. The near-death experience affected many and the life saving amputations challenged their emotional resources. The book includes many of the powerful letters he received. These inspirational letters, which empowered John and his family, are as powerful today as they were when received. The humor and the heartbreak, the joys and the disappointments, and the hopes and the frustrations are blended into an emotional and unforgettable story.
