Naturally sweet.......2001-08-01

This book gives information about alternatives to refined sugar. It is a very good book with excellent recipes (from simple cookies -the chocolate shortbread sounds terrific- to cakes and ice creams. But, something important, be ready to buy or order (there is a page of sources. Fantastic!) "Sucanat" or "maple sugar", "rice syrup" or "maple syrup". Because if you do not have these on hand, you cannot try the recipes. There are also some recipes with honey, an ingredient that is easier to find.

Easy to Enjoy.......2001-01-10

Most of the cookbooks I own come with the appliances I buy. This book is an exception. I enjoy the flavours of maple syrup and honey and was delighted to find a cookbook that caters to my tastes. I find the recipes easy to follow. I'm not an expert in the kitchen. Beside each recipe is a margin where the author has put some notes and room enough for you to enter any notes you may want to as well. At the end of some recipes are tips that give you a clue as to what to expect if you've never had the experience of, "Carmelizing Maple Syrup", for example. Another tip I really liked was the suggestion of using a variety of apples in my apple pie. That was a tasty surprise. The Pastry recipe, which she credits to Julia Child, is the best I've ever had. If you are a chocolate lover, try Aunt Josephine's Chocolate Cake. It's heavenly. I find the author's approach to the reader to be like a personal tutorial. It's like she's right there watching over and encouraging your every move. I haven't tried all the recipes yet but I'm getting a little braver as I tackle the standards: date squares, brownies, pies, and cookies. Thank you Carrie Davis for the "Naturally Sweet Baker".

As a professed chocoholic I was prepared only to savour the chocolate recipes in Carrie Davis's The Naturally Sweet Baker. But to be fair, I didn't restrict myself to those, although there is an ample supply. And I have to admit, that Davis's Maple Mousse is just about the nicest dessert I have ever made or eaten! And my guests raved about it too.

Of course, Aunt Josephine's Chocolate Cake was a real winner as well. This cookbook is a great resource for information about alternatives to refined sugar in your baking, and an absolute treasure trove of recipes. Check it out for some fun, adventure and delicious treats!

Damage control and developing new prevention initiatives have become the tasks of nearly everyone involved within corporate America, including the FASB (Financial Accounting Standards Board), SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission), NYSE (New York Stock Exchange) and the US Congress. The overwhelming reaction has been for more regulation and more policing. Many good corporations are keeping a low profile, being careful not to incur collateral damage.

This crisis has inflicted significant damage to the USA and world financial markets not to mention individual investors net worth. Unfortunately everyone associated with the corporate world is under suspicion. There is applause when fraudulent corporate executives are lead out of their offices in handcuffs. People are looking for someone to blame, someone to be responsible for the devastation of their retirement portfolios. They are also looking for a place to put their money. Huge amounts of money are still out there looking for a home.

There are near daily reports in the media of more regulation, more oversight, with some witch-hunt like activity. Conspicuously absent from most news reports is that the majority of corporations hold themselves to a set of principles, ethics and reporting criteria that would never allow them to wallow in the same manure as an Enron or WorldCom.

Directors of these good corporations have an opportunity to separate themselves from the scandalous corporations and in so doing lead the restoration of confidence in the capital markets. When, in recent USA history, has there been such a great investment audience, with riveted attention, that is hungry for good news from good corporations?

Honorable people, trying to do the right thing, run most USA corporations. To make this apparent to the investment markets and stand out in the crowd a company is going to have to do two things. Make sure its house is completely in order and overtly tell the investment world. .

Historically a clean audit opinion from a CPA firm provided a high level of comfort. Recent events within the CPA profession have weakened the value of a clean opinion. Having a clean opinion on your financials is not, by itself, strong enough to gain investors confidence. Isn't an audit opinion from Arthur Anderson a liability? Doesn't it create suspicion? Corporations cannot rely on a clean opinion alone to demonstrate and prove that they are managed ethically and reported clearly.

Most CPA firms are comprised of very smart and ethical people. Given time, the accounting profession will be able to regain some of its position and value in the business world. CPA's will survive this scandal. How rapid they can regain their previous stature and level of trust is up to them. In the interim CPA's have as their focus damage control, controlling liability, dealing with unprecedented reams of new regulations and making sure that their own houses are in order. They are in a very tough situation that was created by poor decision made by a few of their own members.

The immediate response of many proactive Boards and Executives to the financial crisis is to spend more on outside attorneys and CPA's to keep the corporation out of trouble. What else should a good Corporation do?

Honesty and ethical conduct cannot be created from regulation. Moral authority does not come from outside rules. It comes from self-adherence to principles and specific conduct that is communicated clearly for all to see. Each Corporation must decide how it will demonstrate that it holds itself to high standards of ethics and honesty that encompasses all of the applicable regulation and oversight (SEC, FASB, NYSE, etc) that is appropriate to its business.

MERC ™ (Managed Ethically and Reported Clearly) is an attempt to capture good operating principles and good governance practices in one easy to understand acronym.

MERC ™ does not replace the rules and procedures of conduct that should already be specified within the company but rather verifies that ethics and clear reporting is comprehensive throughout the organization. MERC ™ summarizes and makes it clear that members of the corporation will conduct themselves in a prescribed ethical manner and uphold certain standards even if there is not a specific rule, regulation or policing body requiring them to do so.

"A Bully Father" is a delightful insight into a remarkable American family. The first portion of the book is a biographical narrative of Theodore Roosevelt, with a strong emphasis on his family life. The remainder is a collection of letters from TR to his children. Although the letters are identified by topic, they are otherwise left to speak for themselves.

These letters were generally written to his children while they were away at school. The letters are treasures from the Age of Letters. Things which today would be communicated in person, by telephone or e-mail were, in TR's day, communicated and preserved in correspondence. The letters cover a wide variety of topics. Events of daily life of the Roosevelt family and evaluations, favorable and unfavorable, of the child constitute the majority of the letters. Nothing was too small for TR's attention. Horse and carriage rides, playing with children or wrestling with Japanese wrestlers, his tennis partners and White House visitors are all recorded for our enjoyment. TR also used these letters to give vocational advice as well as to comment on public events of the day. TR also expounds on his views on literature and history, as well as his views on family values. The classical literature which he and "Mother" read to the children are mind boggling!

This is a book which is enjoyable to read and also makes you think. TR's relationship with his children and his interactions with them provide a standard against which we can measure our own lives. Read this book and treasure it!

If you are a serious reader of history and/or treasure the legacy of Theodore Roosevelt, as I do, get your hands on this book.

Theodore Roosevelt not only wrote to his kids, but also drew great pictures. One of his best in here is a drawing of TR playing tennis. Before widespread telphones, and certainly prior to cell phones, people seemed to dash off notes to each other more frequently. One school of TR thought says Teddy simply loved writing to his kids in profusion. The revisionist school says, of course he did, since he was so frequently away.

TR's letters to his son Quentin are especially touching, since later on Quentin took a German gunner's bullet through the head over France, driving TR into inconsolate murmerings lamenting the loss of his "Quentee-Quee." The development of these nicknames is chronicled in these letters.

For whatever reason TR wrote them, they read very movingly. TR's own namesake, Ted Jr., tried to pull off the same thing with his kids, documented in another out-of-print book written by Ted Jr (before his early heart attack during WWII) called "All in the Family." Wherein little Ted's mistake is to too slavishly imitate big TR's way of organizing walks, going camping, and dashing off notes. So there is something inimitable here, which should also caution the modern reader from hankering too quickly to start writing letters-a-plenty. But the picture drawing might be OK. What kid wouldn't like a few more scribbled pictures from their dad?

So at least look at the pictures here. Unlike Ronald Reagan's, these were done to and for TR's own kids. Not to dump on Ron, but to perhaps establish a reference point among competing versions of family dysfunction.

Chock full of stuff but painful to read and hard to use........2005-02-10

This book has lots of financial worksheets and checklists, but they're not written in a helpful manner or format. Plus, you end up entering much of the same info into many checklists over and over again. Worse, the text is really painful to read. It's not broken down into bite-size pieces or written in plain-English. And I have to agree with Mr. Bingham that it is hard to use the CD-ROM because you have to click into each folder to see what's there and then click into BOTH the PDF forms and text forms folders, because sometimes the forms in the two folders are just duplicates of each other while other times a form only exists in one folder or the other. In short, the book is heavy on forms and worksheets whose usefulness is questionable, and light on text.

Great Book for those wanting to start a LLC by themselves!.......2002-06-28

I find this book to be one of the best on the subject of LLC's. I myself invest in real estate and run everything through my LLC's. This book has pretty much all you need for running your company, every single form is incredibly useful. I personally do not use the Residential/Commerical lease forms because I use my own and each state and cities within the state have different rental regulations and laws. I strongly disagree with Mr. Bingham's review about the CD-Rom because in the book on pages 9-12 contain a list of the forms found on the CD-Rom and which form lable goes with which topic. An example of this is:

The forms on the CD-Rom are in text and pdf format. I wonder if Mr. Bingham even opened the book because this is discussed at the beginning of the book with the "List of Forms-on-CD" section and throughout the rest of the book. I think this is a must have for those either considering forming a LLC for your business or running an existing one. This book is saving me a lot of time and effort and will do the same for you!

Book Review.......2002-01-23

This book is a fairly general overview of running a company. It doesn't really delve into anything too difficult and a lot of its bulk (number of pages) is made up by repeating the same material (as forms) with minor variations. Clarity could be greatly improved if a single iteration of the form was given, and the areas that were subject to variations were so indicated. The way it's done you have to compare 4-8 variations to see what changes between them. Another serious failing is the lack of an index for the forms on the CD. They are simply labeled Doc1, Doc2, etc. You have to open each one to find out what they are. The book does not refer to them by the names on the CD, and there is no index in either the book or on the CD. This is a mediocre book, not bad, not great.

I loved this book. It is basically a small business startup guide that focuses on choosing the LLC company structure. It could be used as a workbook to start your own business as an LLC. Even if you are planning to start a sole proprietorship or a corporation, this book still has substantial value for you. It is comprised of 18 chapters:

The things I liked the most about the book include: (1) the business plan material included in chapters 2 through 4, (2) the Articles of Organization and Operating Agreement material in chapters 9, 10, and 12, (3) the coverage of Taxation of LLC in Chapter 18, (4) the State LLC information, and (5) the Glossary. All these areas were covered well, but more research should be pursued on each topic in order to fully understand them. A call to your local SCORE chapter would probably prove to be helpful to you to learn more. Also, you may want to visit the free law library at your county courthouse and ask the law librarian to show you the form book regarding LLCs.

Regarding the Business Startup Checklist, I would recommend that the preparation of your Operating Agreement, employee contracts, and Chart of Accounts should be done during the creation of your business plan. Doing these three tasks when the author suggests is a little late in the game in my humble opinion.

Also, at page 62 I would have said that an Operating Agreement is only important if the LLC is going to have more than one member. And I found it a little confusing when the author describes and discusses business plans when he talks of an overall business plan that includes three plans: business, marketing and financial. Maybe the sub-plan should have been called an operations plan?

I would have liked the book better if when financial plans for the business plan were discussed that there had been some coverage on cash flow statements. Cash flow is critically important for a small business - both in the planning stages and in the actual operating stages. 5 stars!

This is a story about me, as a little Italian boy born in a small town in Massachusetts. My father and mother came to this country in the early 1900s. Neither spoke English or knew anything about American money. They asked for nothing, and received nothing, from government assistance. I remember my father saying he had only thirteen cents in his pocket when he came here from the old country, but he had a strong determination to become an American. His newfound freedom to learn a different vocation, and the chance to become a businessman, gave him hope for a positive future for his family.
