Chicken Soup for the Promotionally-Challenged.......2007-07-28
I expected this book to have more meat. In truth, it is just a bunch of 'successful' people tooting their own horns. In some ways, I guess that is the point of the book. But, the overall quality of the 'stories' and suggestions is poor. It is just another book on self-promotion and not a very good one at that. Save your money for something else.

Customer Reviews:
Marketing for Brand awareness.......2005-04-06
An ideal read for anyone looking to increase their profile and brand awareness. The book uses traditional marketing concepts and applies them to the art of self promotion......Brilliant!!!!
Terrific range of examples.......2005-03-18
Debbie has produced yet another very readable, interesting, and motivating collection of real-life people who have figured out ways to best promote themselves succesfully. Keep it coming, Debbie, as shamelessly as you can!
Maybe it was my fault...........2003-06-20
Maybe it was my fault for not reading the book description better, but I really expected a lot more from this book than what it was able to deliver. The book is essentially a hodge-podge of stories from 68 different "marketing gurus" (mostly speakers and business "coaches"). Unfortunately, there are very few sections that are universally applicable. Instead, the book contains war story after war story -- a very few of which might actually be relavent to you and your business. However, the work required to dredge up this occassional "nugget" isn't worth the effort. Instead, I strongly encourage you to pick up a copy of C.J. Hayden's "Get Client's Now!" For anyone interested in building a personal brand, I would also recommend Robert Bly's "Become a Recognized Authority..." Finally, for consultants and other business service professionals, I'd recommend Brody, D'Angelo, Kerley, and Zick's "Power Marketing for Consultants," Shenson and Wilson's "138 Quick Ideas to Get More Clients," and Robert Gentle's "Consultant -- Market Yourself." In short, this book has been a huge disappointment. In fact, I suspect that most of the positive reviews are from some of the "68 marketing gurus" and not from objective readers. Overall grade: C-/D+
Promotion made fun and effective.......2003-06-12
I love books that bring together the best of the best and Confessions of Shameless Self-Promoters featuring my friend, Deb Haggerty, is no exception. I am continually looking for new tools to share with writers and speakers who are trying to market themselves and their products. This book is now a featured book on my Web site and in the reference section in my handouts.
Ideas, tips, and strategies are packaged in an easy-to-read book. I love the fact that those featured don't just talk about success, they go out and grab it. Confessions of Shameless Self-Promoters is motivational and fun and doesn't make a person feel guilty for what they haven't done. Instead it inspires them to do something every day to further their goals.
At first I didn't like the title because I hate self promotion. I look at the most effective promotion as building relationships. Once I started reading the various chapters I realized the title is actually misleading because every person in the book preaches relationship building. Networking, referrals, branding, Internet marketing, direct mail, media, and more or covered in depth and well by some of the top people out there. I highly recommend this practical resource for anyone regardless of their business or product.
Celebrating Self with Courage and Creativity.......2003-02-27
As I was about to read this book, frankly, I was somewhat deterred by its title just as I was before reading Marilyn Ross's Shameless Marketing for Brazen Hussies. Titles such as these seem so blatant, so self-serving, so crass, so....
In fact, the same can be said of the content in these two books as well as in Allen's Confessions of Shameless Internet Promoters. And that is precisely the key point: because each of us receives each day (on average) about 3,000 (or is it 30,000?) "messages" of various kinds, it is more difficult now than ever before to penetrate all the noise and all the clutter. We now live in what Tom Davenport and John Beck call "the attention economy." The most valuable currency is gaining the interest and attention of others and then, over time, earning their respect and trust.
As a result, we should feel no shame when aggressively promoting ourselves if we do so with honesty and integrity; people buy from other people, not from companies. Nor should we feel any shame when aggressively promoting a product or service if it is of sufficient quality, fills a legitimate need, is priced fairly, and delivers substantial value. To those who complain that women seem "brazen" when doing so, I say "Get over it."
In this volume, Allen introduces each of the 13 chapters with her own thoughts about the given subject (e.g. "You Cannot Not Market" and "Building Your Unique Brand Recognition") and then several of the 68 guest contributors share their own thoughts, feelings, experiences, advice, etc. Inevitably, the value of individual segments will be determined almost entirely by the specific deeds and interests of each reader. All of the contributors' comments are worth sharing but not all of them are immediately relevant to each reader's circumstances. However, I think the entire book should be read and then re-read. Circumstances change, frequently without warning. We may need tomorrow or next week what we do not need today. In The Art of War, Sun Tzu observes that every battle is won or lost before it is fought. There is much to be said for "shameless" preparation.
For many, Chapter One ("An Introduction to Shameless Self Promotion") may well be the most valuable portion of the book because it provides all manner of reassurances that shameless self promotion really is legitimate, indeed imperative in today's marketplace IF (huge "if") it is conducted with honesty and integrity as well as tenacity. Allen provides a brief quotation on the title page of each chapter. For Chapter One, "If you don't blow your own horn someone else will use it as a spittoon." (Anonymous) Brief contributions by five marketing "gurus" -- Jeffrey Storie, Mark Victor Hansen, Don Taylor, Dana Burke, and Rick Segel -- then follow.
While reading this book, I frequently made connections between it and another book I read recently, Phillip McGraw's Self Matters: Creating Your Life from Inside Out. Directly or indirectly, Allen and most of her 68 contributors assert that effective promotion of one's self is wholly dependent upon having a strong sense of self-confidence and self-worth. Stated another way, the effectiveness of self promotion in the external world is wholly dependent on creating and then nourishing a healthy inner self. I agree with McGraw that self not only matters, it is all that we have. It does much more than identify us: it defines us. If we do not value it, why should anyone else?
Ignore the overheated words and phrases. Read all the lines but also read between them. Absorb and digest what Allen and her associates have to say. Then re-read at least the first chapter. This book has much of value to say about both self and promotion: the health of the former determines the effectiveness of the latter.
Many of those who begin reading this book looking for specific strategies and tactics will indeed find them but also something else of much greater value: a better understanding of themselves and, especially, of what may have delayed, diminished or even prevented their success in life until now. Who knows? You may be among them. Most of us are.

In this fascinating course, Joe Ross reveals the innermost secrets of the options traders along with the best of futures trading. He teaches you step-by-step how to win.
You will see: Who the real competition is in the options and futures market and why they don't want you to know the truth about options. What your broker won't tell you and what he can't tell you.
Customer Reviews:
Better than any Futures course being offered today.......2006-07-26
This is the only trading book you need in your library. If I was going to do it all over again as a trader I would buy this book and Mark Douglas' The Disciplined Trader. Better than most of the seminars being touted today and in my opinion better than software that predicts with almost XX% accuracy for 50 times the cost of this book. I have all of Joe Ross's books and this is by far the best one.
The Thinking Person's Way to Trade Options.......2000-03-24
Joe Ross has written the best strategy guide for trading options I have ever seen. This book shows you how to blend the best features of option trading together with the best of futures trading. The book is a classic, and with each reading, I gained more and more understanding of how the markets really work, and how to take advantage of combining options and futures.
If you are an option trader, you need the understanding of the underlying futures as presented by Joe. If you are a futures trader, Joe shows you the simple and most straightforward way to bolster your futures trading by adding to it the world of options.
To say that this book is outstanding is to vastly underrate its contents. A bargain at any price and worth far more than its cost.

Book Description
Domestic programs and foreign policies--and the man himself--explored in almost a hundred articles and essays, with expert commentary. Paul Boyer has caught the essence of the pros and cons of Reagan and his presidency....A thoughtful and absorbing introduction. --Frank Freidel
Customer Reviews:
A Balanced, Thoughtful Collection.......2002-05-09
Unlike some of the popular works on Reagan, which are all too often uncritically fawning (Peggy Noonan, Dinesh D'Souza) or overly polemical and extremely critical (Haynes Johnson), Paul Boyer's collection of speeches, articles and essays presents a wonderfully balanced and fair look at Reagan. An excellent text.
An unbiased look at President Reagan..........1998-07-18
*Reagan As President* is one of the few works about Ronald Reagan that is written without bias. Though the book is a collection of close to 100 articles and essays that were written by various propents and opponents of the Reagan Presidency, its purpose is to compare different thoughts and ideas. In the beginning of each section, Paul Boyer gives a brief history on the covered topic and then allows the writers to present their views. At the time of the book's publication, Boyer was Merle Curti Professor of History at the University of Wisconsin and a senior member of the Institute for the Research in the Humanities at the school. His work is written in a scholarly manner and will undoubtedly be used as a reference for historians in the years to come. Though not written in a chronological manner, *Reagan As President* begins with Boyer's recount of the 1980 campaign and election, which is followed by the president-elect's acceptance speech at the Republican National Con! vention and Reagan's first innaugural address. The book then covers articles critiquing the Reagan Era, to include the president's persona, his second election victory, economic and tax policies, welfare and the poor, national defense, the Iran-Contra Scandal, Central America and Reagan's relationship and attitudes toward the Soviet Union. For the student of the Reagan Presidency, Paul Boyer's work will eliminate hours of research. Key issues are presented by reprints of various leading journalists and writers of many different newspapers and other media. For the interested reader, *Reagan as President* provides an exellent comprehensive one-stop reading.

Ever since Ike Turner's ex-wife Tina claimed that Ike was an abusive and violent husband who frequently cheated on her and at times drove her near to suicide, Ike has been a social pariah for most of the nineties. Now he tells his own story.
Customer Reviews:
Through the Madness!!!.......2006-04-26
First of all, Ike is doing the very thing that Tina always said he would do. Ike Turner will never admit to what he did to Tina. Tina stayed around him for so long because she promised that she would never leave him like "all the others." Ike took advantage of her. Tina her self said she cared very much for him. Cher even had seen what was going on and tried to convince Tina to leave him. Even the girls that danced with Tina on stage had whitnessed what happened.
Tina did not write her autobiography to promote her career, she herself said that she did not want to talk about what happened but the public kept asking her what had went on. So she released her autobiography in 1986, well after her come-back in 1984.
While Ike can try to deny it all he wants, the truth is he violently abused Tina! And considering the person Ike Turner is, I would expect him to do no less than to lie and make a pathetic-excusse of a come-back!!!
The real thing........2005-03-17
I am a record producer. I have been around musicians in many guises. There are few originals. Ike Turner is one of them. Ike Turner literally INVENTED Rock and Roll. If you don't believe it, listen to his early tracks. Listen to him play guitar on the Kid Thomas sides, then tell me Jimi Hendrix didn't rip him. Ike was also a show business genius. When "colored" acts couldn't get work out of the "chitlin circuit", Ike put together a package that crossed all genre, AND was a hit. Yeah, Ike got loaded. Yeah, Ike was a control freak... So were the others like: Ray Charles and James Brown. Heck, Albert King regularly pulled pistols on his band. We are not talking about the suburbs here. ..Hound Dog Taylor SHOT his bass player, then got mad because the bass player went to work for J.B. Hutto. Yeah, Ike went up-side Tina's head. Still, all the musicians I've talked to who played in the band support Ike, and say that Tina was an indulged prima-donna whiner. If you are a "Tina Fan", you likely have not spent much time around singers, and their "diva moments". Ike wrote, played, arranged, recorded, produced and promoted the music that became Rock and Roll. Ike's music (and life) was (is) truely exciting. We ALL owe him big-time for opening the gates of thrilling music. The man is a stud. GO SEE HIM PLAY LIVE!
I thought I respected him, but now I don't.......2005-02-25
He definitely was not served life on a silver spoon. I don't begrudge him with the way he views everything as anti-Black, or anti-Ike because I'm sure I would feel same way if I had a life like that.
I still think he was one of the best band leaders we've had. One of his viewpoints is something I noticed as a teen. You walk into a record store and the white groups are in the Rock section and black groups are in Soul or R&B even though the music is often indistinguishable. Ike is recognized as recording the first song that was called "Rock and Roll". His records were never in the Rock section of the record store. It is a shame, I expect the problem still exists today.
The book isn't very well written. It gets mired in the details, goes on and on and on and on, and has some sections that are in extreme poor taste in my opinion. I found myself skipping ahead. I don't appreciate a book that I can't share with my teenage sons. I don't think they add to the story, and they certainly don't leave me thinking that Ike's name needs taking back. I see why Tina left him now.
I've recently read a Kiss biography and a Rolling Stones biography. I love music, I love stories about the music business, but the business is full of rot and ruin. I'm done with biographies of musicians!
Wow...a baffling read..........2004-02-24
I have to start this review clearing a few obvious things. First, most people are aware that the film WHATS LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT does have inaccuracies, and yes, there are two sides to every story, BUT...
That out of the way, I read much of TAKIN' BACK MY NAME with my mouth open in disbelief. Ike IS recognized as a pioneer in Rock-n-Roll, no denying, and of course we should take that into account, but genius does not justify the monster that even he admits that he was. For those who credit him for admitting it, its really hollow praise- I mean, he had NO CHOICE but to admit it- if he tried to deny it, he would have countless witnesses to the abuse, adultery, drugs etc. who would tear him to shreds!
As a read, this is definitely fascinating, although frustrating in its context and confusing in its narrative (Ike is apparently not a slave to chronology). He seems to contradict himself at various points, and even seems a bit out of touch at other times (does he really think Tina would reunite for a reunion tour??? The Supremes couldnt even do it, and Ike thinks that Tina's gonna??? LOL)
My main problem was the subject matter- it is so difficult to have compassion for the author, even in light of his declaration of mistakes. If you can get past it, you may enjoy this book...
PS. for the prior entries who ridiculed Tina for staying with Ike so long, have you even considered the possiblity that she may have been fearful of what he might do? Its much easier to make that statement if you're not actually in the situation...
SHEENA OF THE JUNGLE.......2004-02-07
BY OWNING UP TO THE MISTAKES HE MADE IKE TURNER HAS REDEEMED HIMSELF. I'LL ADMIT I'VE ALWAYS BEEN ANNOYED BY THE POSTURING
TINA BANDWAGON RIDERS. BUT LITTLE RICHARD SETS IT STRAIGHT WHEN HE SAYS ABOUT TINA "SHE KNOWS MY NAME BUT SHE DON'T CALL ME."
GIVEN THE TIMES OF THE "TINA ERA" IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A PRUDENT
CAREER MOVE TO PLAY THE ABUSED SPOUSE- IT APPEARS SHE AND HER PUBLIC RELATIONS MACHINE DID THIS-
HER TIMING WAS PERFECT & SHE BUILT QUITE A CAREER OUT OF IT.
IT WAS QUITE THE FASHION-EVEN DID A DUET WITH MICK JAGGER-
BUT A ONE TRICK PONY. BEAR IN MIND HER ENTIRE SCHTICK WAS DESIGNED DOWN TO THE LAST WARDROBE DETAIL BY IKE TURNER (HIS FANTASY BEING "SHEENA OF THE JUNGLE" THE 1940'S FILM CHARACTER)-AND AS OLD IKE SAID- "SHE KNEW WHAT I WAS LIKE-WHY DID SHE STAY AROUND SO LONG?"
WHAT I LIKED BEST ABOUT THIS BOOK WAS THE SLANG USED REMINDED ME OF THE GHETTO TALK OF MY YOUTH. AND THE EXPERIENCES IKE REMEMBERS ARE NOT THAT UNUSUAL FOR THOSE OF US THAT HAVE SEEN THE BOTTOM RUNG OF THE LADDER. THE MAN HAS AN INCREDIBLE AMOUNT OF TALENT AND CONTINUES TO BE A MAJOR INFLUENCE. THIS BOOK SERVES AS A PRIMER AND INSPIRATION FOR ANYONE SURVIVING-INTACT-COMING OUT OF THE URBAN JUNGLE AND BEING THROWN INTO THE BUSINESS JUNGLE-WITH ALL ATTENDANT STRESSES AND PAINS- ALL THE VIOLATIONS- ALL THE HEARTACHE OF DISLOYALTIES - AND THEN BEING THROWN BACK INTO THE BOTTOM AGAIN-NOT IN ANONYMITY-BUT UNDER THE SCRUTINY OF THE WHOLE WORLD- AND THEN BOOTSTRAPPING YOURSELF -FOR A THIRD TIME!!!!!!!- THIS MAN UNDERSTANDS SURVIVAL-
WELCOME BACK, IKE-

Book Description
The Secret Life of a Schoolgirl is an extraordinary memoir—a jewel. Rosemary Kingsland was born in India during the dying days of the British Raj. While there, she and her family lived a life of privilege. But with the fall of the Raj, they were forced to return to England, where their fortunes took a decided turn for the worse. In London, then in Cornwall, then back in London, the simmering tension between Rosemary’s parents erupted into outright warfare fueled by alcohol and her father’s persistent, unrepentant womanizing. It was a lonely, dangerous childhood.
But one day Rosemary’s life changed forever. At a café where she had gone to escape from a party her father had insisted she attend with him, she met Richard Burton, the dashingly handsome Welsh actor who was then the toast of the London stage. She had seen him in Under Milkwood some months before. She was an adolescent schoolgirl. He was twenty-nine.
The Secret Life of a Schoolgirl is a deeply felt evocation of first love, and of family bonds forged in intense isolation. It is made all the more remarkable by the luminous quality and riveting narrative voice of Rosemary Kingsland.

Kept me interested.......2007-08-29
This memoir kept me interested the whole time I was reading (and when I was not reading it)
Don't let my rating fool you.......2005-09-26
I liked this book but I seem to be the only person stunned by the fact that one of this century's greatest actors practiced statutory rape again and again and apparently with little or no remorse. I will never again enjoy any movie with Richard Burton. The book is a sad yet compelling read. I can't be angry or vindictive towards a child of 14 but as she got older, she should have realized what a creep and child molester Richard Burton was. I am glad she is successful now and can only pray she learned how NOT to live her life having written a book like this. Thank God women can work outside the home and have careers, attend higher college and pursue lives without depending on any man. This is a good, but sad sad book. I was very depressed by it.
Delicious reading.......2004-06-05
This book made a big splash when it was published, there were oodles of headlines screaming, "Richard Burton was a pedophile!" Ah hem... not quite. The only portions worth reading here are the Burton ones, the rest of the tome is one rather large snooze fest. Kingsland lived a teenage life to die for: as a 14 year old school girl in London, she meets Richard Burton, then 29 and starring in various Shakespearean productions at the Old Vic. Not surprisingly, she was instantly attracted to Burton (what female between the ages of 9 and 90 wouldn't be?), and told him she was 17.
Then their affair began. It was long afterwards that Kingsland admitted to Richard that she was actually only 14 years of age, but Burton didn't seem to care, and continued making love to the girl for several more months. He finally dumps her, as he dumped all his mistresses of that era: Jean Simmons, Claire Bloom and Susan Strasberg, to name a few of his thousands of conquests. Kingsland writes well and her chapters on Burton are engrossing, to say the least. Richard comes off as a drunken but charming cad, and his lovemaking prowess seems to have been rather limited: a slam, bam, thank you, ma'am sort of guy. But when you look like that, who is going to complain? There are some problems with dates, the author puts Burton in London when he wasn't there, and he was certainly not playing Hamlet at the Vic in 1954!
I can think of worse things than to be deflowered by Richard Burton, even if he should have done the proper thing and waited until this girl was out of school. If you're into Burton, this will do you nicely.
Ohboy, more dirt on Richard Burton.......2004-04-17
This delightfully lusty memoir's core bit of cheap gossip is a secret she's kept for more than 40 years: she lost her virginity to Richard Burton. After a rather shaky beginning, Kingsland settles down to a slower pace, pulling readers into a lush background tale of her parents' life in India during the era of the Raj. When Partition forced them back to England, her father was devastated by the change in their circumstances and comforted himself with women and writing poetry. Her mother became agoraphobic in defense - until their fortunes were changed by their improbably huge winnings in a football pool, which allowed them to move from the provincial Cornwall into London.
The episodes surrounding her relationship with Burton, when he was a stage star and she was a star-struck, infatuated 14yo schoolgirl, are written with insight that can only be gained by the passage of all the intervening years.
Charming and evocative coming-of-age memoir.
BEAUTIFUL WRITING!.......2003-08-14
Don't be fooled by the slightly salacious title--this is a gorgeous memoir that's sexy without being trashy. Rosemary Kingsland tells a truly unique coming-of-age story: raised in the English Raj, she and her family move back to England from India when the Empire falls, only to live in poverty, first in the misty wilds of Cornwall (the descriptions in this part are among the most enchanting of the book) and then in grimy post-war London. Her family is like something out of "Long Day's Journey Into Night", full of frustration, alcoholism and violence, but she renders them fully human and sympathetic. Of course, the most shocking part of the book is about her affair, at age 14, with Richard Burton. An inveterate womanizer, Burton manages to seduce young Rosemary while simultaneously carrying on other affairs. The story of their relationship is surprising, but the author appears to have no bitterness or anger towards Burton, and he comes across as surprisingly sad, despite his dashing ways and handsome looks.
Overall, this is a rare literary memoir that is also compulsively readable and provocative. I highly recommend it.
