A book that easily catapults you into the next level!.......2005-04-16

I found Leslie's book accidentally a year ago in an airport bookstore. I had no idea what the book was about, only that I was burned out working in a small job in a toxic work environment. It was so inexpensive, I bought it. When I began to sift through it, I wondered how these little simple worksheets would be able to do anything like the cover promised - rekindling the passion.
I could not have been more wrong. Once I started reading the book, so simple in language, and did my first worksheet - I realized in just a few questions- deeper issues that I was unaware of that were driving my passion and also fueling my fear. I had a lifelong dream but was hiding out as a passionate workaholic in smaller jobs.
Leslie's book not only gently and simply will dig things out at the root but will inspire you to get up, take step by step, and will make sure that this time, you will do it with BALANCE.
This book is so incredibly healthy, and it has become my companion over the last year. The worksheets are a wonder (especially the Synergy Plan worksheet). I recommend making an electronic version and updating it as you progress (and you will progress through those steps with Leslie's help).
Because of this book, I left my old toxic workplace and opened my horizons to being on my path. I am now in a new position I love for the timebeing, have balance, and am pursuing my lifelong dream career in parallel. Life Changing Book.......2005-04-11

Without a doubt this book has changed my life for the better. I have gone from deadend job to deadend job for the past 15 years now, but while reading this book it was like the fog finally lifted. I realized I needed to find the job I loved, not the job that simply paid the bills. Now I am on my way - finally. The exercises seem simple and I really didn't see how they would help me, but they did. They get right to the point and you discover things you didn't even know were an issue for you. I would reccommend this book to anyone who is in this situation.

My husband is Indian, so I cook Indian quite often. This cookbook has realistic, good, step-by-step recipes that can be done with a basic Indian set of ingredients. The food actually turns out how it is supposed to, and tastes great! If you only have 1 Indian Cookbook, this is the one I would recommend.

This book is GREAT! I love Indian food and this book has several recipes that taste exactly the same as the best dishes I have had in restaurants. The pictures with each recipe are great because they act as a guide when you are cooking. Directions are generally simple which adds to the pleasure of using this book.

this is a very helpful book. the step by step pictures are something i could not find in any other indian cookbook. the directions are very simple to follow, and even the toughest recipes seem easy.

Proportions?.......2004-01-25

As a picture book this cookbook is great, but I have to question the portions of the ingredients, particularly the oil used. Many recipes start off calling for 1 1/4 CUPS of oil. If you take this verbatim, you end with oil soup, nothing like the photos.
Interestingly, if you view the preparation photos sometimes the pan looks almost dry (c.f. Chicken and Onions). Where's the 1 1/4 cups of oil? That certainly wasn't absorbed by 4 onions.
Similarly the amount of water also seems out of proportion. What do 1 1/4 cups oil mixed with 2 1/2 cups water look like with 2 lbs. of lamb cooked covered? Not what's on page 23.
Something is wrong here, but it does look great on the coffee table.
And as far as ingredients go, yes 95% of them are in the grocery store shelves but items like dried mango powder or black cumin seed or masoor dhal are probably not. You may have to do a little on-line shopping but then I would expect to.
I thought the following from the recipe for Chapati was amusing: After kneading the flour, salt and water for 7-10 minutes it says to let the dough "rise" for 15-20 minutes. Anyony see anything wrong with those instructions? There's no leavening. It won't "rise" in 15-20 years. It does taste good though.
Oh, and I would suggest a good oil separator.

Top notch.......2005-08-03

I found this book to be amazingly good. Equities traders should be forwarned that "Optimal f" is employed here for commodities traders that can make use of big margin, but Vince may have addressed this issue in his more recent books.

It seems a quite a few people get angry or perplexed by optimal f, and the reasons boil down to a handful: Objection: Employing Optimal f will introduce you to levels of risk (large drawdowns) you find disagreeable. Response: That's OK, the mathematical reasoning is not invalidated by the extent to which one is risk averse. If you don't like using the largest historical loss to calculate Optimal f, you can use far larger datasets to produce more radical outliers, or even estimate catastrophic (percentage) losses.

Objection: The whole scheme seems a little too radical. Response: This is the very thing that makes the book so refreshing. Vince has done his own thinking, and he has done quite a bit of thinking very carefully. I wish I had him on my team.

Objection: The book contains too much math. Response: yes, this is mathematical stuff we are dealing with. You can trade more simply, but some of us want ideas for a better edge.

Objection: The book contains primitive math. Response: this is a product of the author's kindly tone. He is not attempting to astound you with his knowledge, but advancing new ideas in plain language, and try to keep the stragglers up with the main pack as they read. I found the tone conciliatory and courteous.

Throughout, Vince does his own thinking, and the burden of the book is not what you usually find. Most trading books I have read contain a little useful material, but seems to have been launched mainly to gain the author fame and income. This book is different. Vince has real ideas, thinks way beyond the "safe zone" and the book has completely reshaped my understanding of money management.

Excellent coverage of a difficult topic.......2000-11-20

... this book is incredible. I have a degree in mathematics and the principles expressed are extremely sound -- but far more important than the formulas are the first couple of chapters which cause you to view trading in a very different, and statistical, manner. Although the theories in this book can really only be applied to a trading system (which I haven't really used), after reading this book over several times I understand that there is a mathematical certainty that I will eventually lose my trading capital if I don't start approaching trading in a more systematic fashion. Anyway, I highly recommend it -- the sections on gambling theory alone are worth buying it.

Beware applying optimal f to actual trading.......2000-03-02

The problem with optimal f is that the calculation is highly dependent on the largest loss on a trade (not drawdown) experienced in backtesting. If you use optimal f and the largest loss in actual trading is greater than the loss experienced in backtesting, you will go bankrupt. Vince deals with this problem in an offhanded manner by suggesting that the actual f you use should be "padded". OK, so in the end you don't even use the actual optimal f, you pad it. And how much do I pad it by? Vince is silent on this question. So the purpose of optimal f - to decide by formula how much capital to allocate to a trade - is totally negated by the fact that you must "pad" optimal f. And you must pad it by a qualitativly determined amount because, again, Vince gives no formula on how much to pad it by. Optimal f is totally useless for system traders or any other trader for that matter.

full of fluff, platitudes, generalities, and inaccuracies.......1999-10-08

"This book is about mathematical tools". That's the first sentence of Vince, who as it turns out markets his books as heavy on math. I'd bet that he never had college classes in math, or physics, or finance for that matter. His book is full of mathematical depths like explaining why 1+2*3 is equal to 7, not to 9, or giving four reasons why asterisks is the best symbol for multiplication. Another brilliant example is when he illustrates how to combine three assets with different weights: 10% of A, 10% of B, 80% of C; 10% of A, 20% of B, 70% of C, and then three more pages of other different combinations. General math level of this book is a level of B-student in the seventh grade who has never derived a mathematical formula or proved mathematical fact. Then, considerable part of the book is authors comments on trading wisdom, like "first loss is the best loss". Then, there are some ramblings on normal ditributions and Capital asset pricing theory. About 60 pages are appendices on completely irrelevant topics like he writes Black-Scholes formula, or normal distribution, or his grandiose program duplicated in C and Basic.

The "stuff" of this book, which is the so-called "f-ratio" is explained on about ten pages. You can understand it, although it is not a clear explanation. Better probably to read it where the author got it in the first place. It is difficult to say if f-ratio has much practical importance because of assumption of indefinite divisibility of trading contracts.

Most of all this book reminded me a project done overnight for a school or college class where you put a little stuff in the middle and then pad it for volume with anything you can come up with because you need to satisfy the minimum length requirement.

Simply the best investment money management book out there.......1999-07-26

I bought this book about 4 years ago and put it on the shelf for later reading (I collect books in this subject area). I sure wish I read it thoroughly at an earlier date. Concerning the area of money management as related to investing, this is simply the best book I have ever seen, and like I said, I collect books dealing with this subject. While this book at first seems oriented towards the futures markets, its principles may be applied to any market. Personally, I invest in stocks, not futures. Just this weekend, using the theory discussed in this book, I set up a spreadsheet that I feel confident will greatly improve my trading returns in the future. Highly recommended. The material is explained very well and very thoroughly and is very convincing.

It is useful for any paper, and I plan to use it as a second Bible in my ministry with battered women and children. Unemployment remains a major problem for economic policy at the beginning of the millennium. Taxes and Unemployment investigates how tax policy affects labor market outcomes in industrialized countries and to what extent it can be used to combat unemployment. In particular, the wage and employment consequences of tax rate variations, the impact of changes in tax progression and of comprehensive tax reforms are analyzed. It is shown that the employment effects of tax policy depend crucially on the institutional features of the labor market. These features are often country-specific and include the strength of collective bargaining institutions relative to other mechanisms of wage determination, the tax treatment of the jobless, the legal incidence of taxes and the exact specification of the tax system. Therefore, Taxes and Unemployment advocates an approach to reducing unemployment which is tailored to the specific characteristics of labor markets. Moreover, the analysis indicates that tax reforms need to be supported by other policy measures to regain full employment.

Thenceforth for five generations his descendants remained Quakers, married u in the meeting with women of the Anglo-Saxon-Celtic blood, followed the frontier, and broke virgin soiL Andrew Hoover passed on from Maryland to North Carolina. In 1802 his son John joined one of the Quaker treks into the virgin lands of the Western Reserve and settled, with others of his faith, near Miami, Ohio. Again in 1853 the family was on the move, driven as was typical of American rural life in those days by the necessity of providing farms for the growing boys. With a group of neighbors and co religionists, Jesse Hoover, then head of the family; his wife Rebecca, his son Eli, and Eli's brood packed themselves into covered wagons and emigrated to the fat, unbroken prairie lands of Iowa. There in 1853 they founded West Branch, Cedar county. Before they began clearing land they had broken ground for their meeting-house ; and for at least thirty years the major ity of that; small but soberly prosperous town wore the broad hat or the poke bonnet and spoke the plain speech. To the large Hoover faction Jesse's wife Rebecca ( sprung from that good old pioneer family the Younts) stood matriarch. Born at about the turn of the nine teenth century, she lived until 1895. She was a woman of glorious energy, stern but humorous character, and strong religious convictions ; and she held firmly to the observances and even the prejudices of hey faith. When the inhabitants began screening their windows against flies, she opposed this hygienic measure as balking A REMINISCENT BIOGRAPHY 5 somehow the purposes of the Lord. When her son Banajah bought a parlor melodeon, she did her best to prevent such manifestation of worldliness. Next thing, she said, they would be setting up an organ in meet ing. And indeed, before she died, a faction of the community had done exactly that Eli Hoover, eldest son of Jesse and Rebecca, held a farm like his forebears. He had, however, a strong mechanical bent.
