This short (and relatively inexpensive) book will help you recognize where your behavior is getting in the way of your success at work.

Bramson emphasizes the importance of seeking and really listening to the feedback you get from others without being defensive, since it often points to areas where you need to change or grow. He notes that many managers are not comfortable giving feedback directly, so they hint around the issues and hope the people under them will be able to read between the lines.

He also points out some additional pitfalls, such as what doing feels right in a situation may not be the best course of action, and that choosing behavior that moves us ahead does not come naturally.

An encouraging point is that we don't need to get rid of our bad habits, but we do need to modify or manage them to keep them from managing us. Bramson's model for image repair is very helpful, and for me was worth the price of the book.

If you are tired of tripping over the same old behaviors at work, try Bramson's prescriptions.

Not a lot new in this book. It focuses most on correcting really dysfunctional behavior, not on subtle defects.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide to the Prevention of Self-Sabotage.......2005-03-16

Watching several people I admire repeatedly sabotage their careers by failing to recognize and fix the same recurring personality problems caused me to take a break from German-Jewish history and read this book. I have been an employer and an employee, both boss and bossed, and believe that we all can use a good (emphasize "good") self-help book now and then. This book enables the reader to pinpoint self-defeating behaviors and correct them, or at least control them.

In my experience, there are three categories of criticism. The first one is task-related, and your boss will almost always give it to you: "This presentation should be reorganized." "We need a better argument for ...." "Next time include slides on the overhead projector." The second category is personal, but easily fixable, and your boss will give it to you (perhaps with some trepidation): "A tube top is just not 'business casual.'" "You need to start being on time for the 7:00 am meetings." The third category is what your boss will not tell you until it's too late: "you turn people off," "you are too aggressive" or "you are too indecisive." The reason she won't is that these criticisms are of difficult-to-describe personality traits and the message is always uncomfortable to deliver.

Unfortunately, the problems that your boss will not discuss with you (until after you have lost that promotion or job) are the very problems that are the most serious and can have the biggest ramifications for your career. That's where this book comes in. It contains a step-by-step process for identifying your trouble spots and addressing them. If you're not brave enough to actually engage people in discussions about your flaws (as the book suggests), it contains several chapters on common personality problems and suggested substitute behaviors. It also contains a chapter on repairing your image, if it comes to that.

The book takes a non-judgmental approach, pointing out that many personality characteristics may be hereditary. Yet, that makes it no less important to address them. (For example, if you knew that you had a gene which predisposed you to getting lung cancer, wouldn't you be even more careful not to smoke?) I learned a great deal from this book. Since none of us is perfect, I would highly recommend the book to anyone who wants to catch and fix bad behaviors early on, before they can ruin your career.

4 out of 5 stars Great and Useful.......2000-03-06

I found this book to be quite useful, it gives you a different perspective on your job, and how others may be viewing what you do. It helps you to think out of your box.

3 out of 5 stars A basic fundamental on the subject of tea.......2003-09-28

I'm a confirmed Tea drinker and have been for many years but with the explosion of coffee shops in recent decades Tea drinking seems to have fallen out of favor in our 'instant' and fast paced world. Not to sound counter culture but to me one of the attractions of drinking tea is its slow pace. When you decide to make a cup of tea its not just a ring-pull-glug beverage it's more like an experience, a quiet vacation from a busy day. Time is required to brew the tea, the longer you wait the stronger the brew but also the longer you wait the cooler the tea becomes.

When you order a 'hot' tea you normally end up with a cup of hot water with a tea bag floating in it, you still have to let it brew. So when I started seeing a Chai tea being offered with the same speed and efficiency as a latte I was curious about the Chai tea is it just some marketing fad or did it have some history?

I picked up the book "Tea Chings" for some light background information on my favorite beverage and I was surprised to find out that Chai Tea does have a history almost as old as tea in India. The book also opened my eyes to other delightful facts about tea.

"Tea Chings" by Ron Rubin and Stuart Avery Gold is a pleasant book to read with facts and history of various styles and blends of teas from traditional black and green leaf teas to Herbal and White leaf teas. Although the facts and the information are sprinkled with hint of propaganda for the 'Republic of Tea' the book does gives you a sound fundamental on the subject of tea.

Not to detract too much from the book but to me it read like a term paper rather than a reference book. For most of us this will be a sufficient level of facts, after all how much does any one really need to know about tea? But if you look a little deeper into the facts you notice a few holes in the information.

I liked the book a lot, even the lettering and the green ink illustrations add to the visual enjoyment of the book. It's a good book to read while waiting for your tea to brew.

                    4 out of 5 stars The I Ching in a cup?.......2003-07-25

The emphasis here is on an attractive and somewhat cutesy presentation of tea and herbs very much in concert with Ron Rubin's The Republic of Tea retailing business. There are sidebar quotes from such anonymous "authors" as "The Minister of Travel," The Minister of Soil," The Minister of Herbs," etc., in frank imitation of Eastern mystical pronouncements. ("The Minister of Travel" is identified on the jacket as co-author Stuart Gold.) An example from page 72:

Who draws the water and boils it?
Who spoons the leaves from the tin and places them in the pot?
Who lifts the kettle and pours?
Who could be a greater friend?

This Zen and Taoist take on the consumption of tea is of course entirely appropriate. The Bodhidarma himself (legend has it) contributed his eyelids to the spawning of the first tea plant; and Zen and Taoist masters have from olden times used tea as an aid to meditation. Personally, as a long-time devotee myself, I believe that tea has mystical powers not easily quantified by modern science, and at any rate there is also a ceremonial and a devotional aspect to the drinking of tea than leads one to the quiet contemplation that makes for a life fully lived.

The text is easy to read and there are attractive thumbnail illustrations in green throughout. There are a few plugs for Rubin's company, but they are tastefully woven in. I must however call into question some of the information. For example on page 34 it is writ: "Homo erectus pekinensis, who lived in Southeast Asia where tea bushes grow wild, was boiling water and eating wild tea leaves more than 500,000 years ago." I would dearly like to see the reference for this supposition. (There are no footnotes.)

Also on page 20 it is claimed that white tea has "virtually no caffeine." I am having white tea myself this afternoon with lunch (Foojoy's Bai Mudan) which I have drunk many times before. I can say with complete confidence that it has noticeably more than "virtually no caffeine."

Indeed the whole question of the caffeine content of various teas seems a bit murky in this volume. On page 80 there is a table "Caffeine in Beverages" that indicates that five ounces of green tea contains 15 mg of caffeine while five ounces of black tea contains 40 mg. Needless to say it depends on which green or black tea you are talking about. Japanese green teas in my experience typically contain more caffeine that Chinese green teas. The caffeine in a typical Assam tea (a "black" tea) seems greater than in say Keemun the famous black tea from China. Furthermore, of course, it depends on how strong one brews one's tea and how long the leaves stay in the water and indeed at what temperature the water is when it hits the leaves.

Putting that aside and assuming such things are balanced, as I presume the authors do, consider this statement, also from page 80: "The more oxidized (or "fermented") the tea, the more caffeine it contains..."

I don't see how this can be true since the amount of caffeine in the bud and leaves does not gain from oxidation. It is not the processing of the tea (except for the deliberate removal of caffeine), but the tea leaves themselves that determine the amount of caffeine in the infusion. The authors imply that they know this when they end the paragraph with the observation that "The greatest concentration of caffeine...is in the bud and first two leaves of the tea bush."

I'm not even sure that this is correct. What IS correct is that the finer the tea the more likely it is to come from the bud and the first leaf or two, yet it will not be experienced as "strong"--which reveals perhaps a more important point about tea drinking: in the older leaves there is more tannin, and it is the experience of tannin that seems "strong" and bitter. The finest teas have only a hint of tannin and not a bit of bitterness.

Putting these peccadilloes aside, this is an attractive book that would make a nice gift for tea and herb lovers. For those who drink nothing but Lipton, it will be an eye-opener deluxe.

5 out of 5 stars Tea chings: a great beginning.......2003-04-25

Being new to the joy of tea drinking, this was a great introduction. Great chapters on the history of tea, the many varieties, and the basics for brewing a cup. I highly recommend it and their wonderful tea.

5 out of 5 stars The products of the Republic of Tea are as good as this book.......2002-02-16

Although I haven't totally abandoned my coffee---and my coffee lifestyle---the Republic of Tea's products and mission have brought a growing serenity to my everyday outlook. The sip-by-sip culture centered around the "event" of taking tea has been a release valve for my frenetic pace.

This book helped me appreciate the inner-workings---not just the taste---of tea. I will keep it next to my teapot where it will serve a valuable reference to this ageless beverage.

The writing is rather academic and a bit like a lecture. It's sort of like a primer on the topic. It is good in a sense, because it covers issues in a concise format but is not really for a trader

4 out of 5 stars Ups and Downs of Investment Styles.......2004-04-29

Written by hedge fund people and university researchers, this collection includes in-depth discussions of money-making techniques practiced by fund managers. It may not be for beginners, but offers practical insights for those with some knowledge of hedge funds.

The article on hedged equity strategies, for instance, classifies these by several characteristics such as the nature of a manager's research. The author then points out the pros and cons of each category, thereby clarifying key issues.

Another paper looks at global macro--the strategy made famous by George Soros. There is a common notion that the day of the giant macro fund is over and there will be nobody like Soros again. This author rejects the idea, arguing that potentially great macro managers are out there, waiting to be discovered.

Now that there is broader interest in hedge funds, books like this one can help demystify what these offer to investors who seek alternatives to mutual funds.

                      Book Description

A unique approach with supporting market data (1986 to 2005) and case studies are presented by the author. The approach is simple and easy to use and follow. This revised edition includes experience gained from market period from year 2000 to 2005. The methodology discussed in the previous edition stood well during the difficult market conditions from year 2000 to 2003. This book shows investors how and when to invest in stocks, mutual funds and index options.

The trading strategies are based on market timing techniques, with emphasis on technical analysis. It will expose investors to an exciting new approach in timing the trades. The methodology is based on detecting the short-term and long-term market trends and how to strategically trade the market to maximize gain situations and to minimize loss occurrences.

The book contains many examples and case studies including short and long term trading scenarios with loss and profit tally to help investors to gain better understanding of the methodology.

This book is unique and different from other books on the subject matter. It makes the investing process foolproof. Buy and sell signals generated by the methodology presented in this book make the investing process mechanical without any attachment or emotional feeling for the stock market. In general, it tells investors when to get in the stock market and when to step aside. It removes the damaging effect of emotions and feelings from the investing process.

Readers should note that based on Section 103(F) included in this revised edition, $1,000 invested in S&P 500 index on 2/1/1991, and parking the money in the interest bearing money market account during the bear market period from 10/6/00 to 5/2/03, and then reinvested back into S&P 500 index on 5/2/03 would approximately accumulate to $6,000 by end of March 31, 2006. That equals an annualized simple return of approximately 33%. However, readers must remember that the past performance is no guarantee of future results.

This book is designed to help to get the most from investments with the least amount of effort and should serve both the novice and the experienced investors. This book is for those who:

                              Part One Of Two Parts

It is hard to imagine anything new about Churchill. But in this life of the young lion, William Manchester brings us fresh encounters and anecdotes. Alive with examples of Churchill's early powers, THE LAST LION entertains and instructs.

"Manchester is not only master of detail, but also of `the big picture.'...I daresay most Americans reading THE LAST LION will relish it immensely." (National Review)

This is a very good analysis of Churchill, a thorough and colorfull portrait of a man I consider to be the greatest man of the 20th century. I have only two complaints, first I would have liked to have known more about his life with his wife and children. I also would have liked to have known what he thought of the Lusitania sinking. Not only does Manchester say nothing about Churchill's role in this business but the word Lusitania is not mentioned at all in nearly 2000 pages. Very strange. The letters of Churchill point out the chivalrousness and romantic nature that the public has not seen. All in all - very good and well worth a good read.

5 out of 5 stars What a great writer, writing about an even better man!.......2007-05-18

William Manchester is a tremendous writer. A man like Churchill deserved to have his biography writted by a writer as gifted as him.
I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting, not only to learn much about the great man Churchill, but also to have their mind expanded and stretched by excellent literature like this. There are not many people writing like this today, sadly enough.
This is not an easy read, in fact most people will do well to have a dictionary near by - but it is worth it. Drink deeply and you will learn so much more than you would have thought possible about the world from the late 19th century up through WWII.
                              Drink it up! 6 stars.

This fully lives up to its reputation as perhaps the best biography ever written. Manchester does a peerless, masterful job filling in the background colors and giving a complete picture of Churchill from a young man into his early fifties. As Manchester emphasizes, this background was essentially the decline and fall of the British Empire and the aristocracy who ran it. Manchester's main point, that Churchill was a Victorian who also lived in the twentieth century, is brilliantly made. Churchill himself is presented in all his perplexing, influriating splendor: an impetuous, charming, ambitious genius who all too often jumped out of the plane without a parachute. If you wish to know why he was rejected by the British people at the polls just after his greatest triumph (and job done) this fascinating volume of his early triumphs and memorable failures is indispensible (answer: they needed his boistrous energy in war but they didn't trust him in peace

5 out of 5 stars Best Churchill biography.......2005-03-15

Best biography of the person who really should have been the " greatest person of the 20th century". He, more than anyone else, stood alone against Nazism, which, no matter how you feel about the present state of Western civilization, kept it from being completely unrecognizable today. He pushed Roosevelt into joining Britain against the Nazis, and was willing to push Britain to keep on fighting alone, down to the last person ; at suicidal odds for many months. He had vision, and was fearless. And, prior to WW2, his exploits in the Boer War and in WW1 make his entire life fascinating. The fact that he was very "aristocratic" in his background has probably made his image diminish in our time. That sort of reverse discrimination is very unfair, I feel. He was also witty, not the least bit warm and cuddly (!) and a pretty good painter.

4 out of 5 stars Understand the most Remarkable Man of the 20th Century.......2004-01-14

This is an excellent book on the first half of the life of a truly exceptional man. Mr Manchester's book deals with Winston's early life and his rise to power and fame. I particularly liked the vignettes about life at the turn of the century; the social situation, the class struggle, the morals of the upper and the working classes.

Just reading it makes you feel somehow inadequate against the intellectual brilliance, courage and sheer energy of the subject.

It would have merited a full five star rating but for two faults. It should have been shorter. It as if every single little titbit of information had to be written out in full, rather than filtered through the critical intellect that Mr Manchester undoubtedly possesses. Instead, he quotes too many letters, reports and speeches in full when his job as a biographer was to summarise them.

The second fault was Mr Manchester's tendency to lionise his subject. Brilliant he may have been, but a bit more acknowledgement of Winston's faults would have made him more human and reachable.

But this is nitpicking. Overall the book is a good read on a subject well worth reading about.
