This book is more of what I think a "text" book should be for learning. It has nice colorful graphics [drawn, photocopied, and photographed] to arouse one's interest and learning. There are "real" companies given as factual examples and links to explore. The Teachers editon would be the best [it not only gives all the answers to the problems, but shows the step by step formulas to use]. I also found that by going to the book companies online resorces, you can download and print PowerPoint slides to help guide you through some of the more complex areas.

I used this book in a business math class and I found it to be confusing and hard to follow. I have a good grasp on business concepts and this book left me feeling more confused after my class than when I began. The approach to this class certainly is not one I would reccomend for college level (for any level for that matter).
Useful in the real world.......2006-05-23
I used the 7th edition in the business math class I took. The class was listed under the BUS designation, and was not intended for those above the 096 level in math. I took it at a community college as part of a certificate program. The first 4 chapters were review and the balance was the class. The chapters were well written and the practice problems useful. There are many problems for each chapter.
I use the formulas and concepts in my work. I am co manager of a grocery store. I use the things I learned each and every day.
Many people do not have a good grounding in math. Business math classes are designed to build a foundation and give skills that can be used right away.
An elementary approach to a college class.......2006-04-14
I am teaching a business math class and was issued this text book by the college. While reviewing the book I found it to be more confusing than helpful. I found the majority of the ideas presented in the book to be of common knowledge. Rather than presenting the concepts in the book in an analytical manner, the author uses a personal narrative to convey the ideas. The author introduces new concepts with successive chapters, but does not explain how these concepts are derived. The author explains concepts at face value, rather than explaining how the concepts come about and how to apply them to other situations outside of the ideal situation. The first 6 chapters or so, out of a total of 22, are a review of basic math skills starting with addition and subtraction of whole numbers and continue to basic uses of percents. In addition to those 6 chapters, more of the successive chapters become redundant and are not presented in a logical order. Integrated into the text are numerous amounts of extraneous articles that are meant to reinforce the underlying point, but instead simply add bulk and distraction to the text.
I found that the concepts of the book are poorly presented and are not explained thoroughly. I would STRONGLY recommend not using this book, especially for a college level business class. A person with little to no everyday business experience would find this book to be very simple. In my opinion this book is primarily geared to a 9th grade level education in a public school system and not a college level class.

What can I saw but this is an awesome book. I never did get past chapter one though because I found out that my previous grade was enough to meet a requirement so I figured why take it again? (Got a D+ originally, with a different book).

An excellent textbook.......2005-08-04
As an instructor at a college, I have used the last three editions of Mr Slater's book since 1999. This has to be one of the most understandable, helpful and explanatory textbooks ever produced.
The examples are clearly written, and the use of small,quick reference 'vignettes' make it so easy for the student to get answers to just about any question they want to pose.
I use many textbooks, as I teach various business and management subjects, and this one stands head and shoulders above any other textbook covering this particular discipline.
The BEST part of this book? It can be kept as a reference guide for just about any mathematical question that comes up in everyday life, such as credit card balances, mortgage amortizations etc.

Some good points ..........2007-04-20
I took a quick glance over this book at a local book store. The author took a few popular indicators and commented on them with respects to various stock picks, plus other discussions on technical analysis that I found to be basic materials. However, he put a little twist in one of indicators that I found very interesting (I haven't thought of this indicator this way before). Thus, I programmed this method of analysis into my TradeStation and found it working quit well. Thanks Colin.
Thorough and well-written with step-by-step instructions.......2006-05-08
No single book on investing will provide you with all the knowledge you will need to be comfortable investing, but Colin Alexander's book comes as close as any. The book starts with the basics, and assumes no prior knowledge or experience with trading. It explains, in detail, the major charting patterns and technical indicators, and provides an algorithm for when to buy and sell. Having read over a dozen books in the field, I find that his suggestions are in-line with the prevailing philosophy of most traders. If you have yet to read a book on technical analysis or swing trading, I would highly recommend to start with this book. If you are already an intermediate trader trying to elevate your technical skills, you may find this work too rudimentary. All in all, this is an outstanding work that is clearly written and easy to implement.

When I picked up this book, I expected something similar to the book All About Market Timing, which overall I thouht was a good book. However, I got something very different in this book. This book consists of an introduction to a handful of indicators, such as on balance volume, the macd, moving averages, stochastics, and some subjective price patterns.
The description of these indicators seems okay to me, although nothing special. He has a brief section on options, where he makes a lot of extremely dubious claims, including the often-repeated professionals sell options, amatuers buy them. I suppose if you repeat this lie often enough, somebody is bound to believe it. He goes on to describe what is apparently his preferred option strategy: covered calls. There's nothing wrong with covered calls or being long premium or any other option strategy, but to claim that one is correct and the others are wrong is quite questionable.
He also is fond of uncovered puts, as a viable option strategy -- unfortunately, this strategy does not work out over the long term; you make steady small profits until you encounter a 10+ sigma event in the market, and get blown out. The lessons of LTCM and Niederhoffer should not be forgotten, especially given that equities markets trend far more than one would assume based on a log normal distribution. High probability trades are not always good trades!
I'm trying to get a handle on the intended audience of this book. It seems to be intended for people new to a technical approach to the market, and if that's the case, I don't think it'd make it to my top 100 list of such books. If someone is new to technical approaches, i'd probably recommend the much smaller (and in my view, much more useful) The Visual Investor by John Murphy.
Overall, I think this book should be avoided like the plague. There's nothing new in this book, just rehashed age-old advice, some of which is dubious, some of which is good.

This book is a tremendous gift to future generations and should be the basis of a mandatory course for everyone in highschool. If it were already, many of my friends and acquaintances would not have lost their fortunes in the last 3 years' bear market.
There is a mountain of great advice and detailed checklists for buying, selling and shorting stocks. Some of my favourite quotes are as follows:
-"The mutual fund industry constantly trumpets from the rooftops the merits for the long term...However the benefits...diminish significantly when capital is constantly eroded by transaction costs and withdrawals to pay capital gains tax...Dickens observed that 'the business of lawyers is making business for lawyers.' Things do not change. The investment business is not immune to mutual back-scratching at the expense of the public...There is no doubt that the rapid turnover of stocks is one reason why so few funds come close even to equaling the performance of the stock indexes."
-"Never put a large amount of money into stocks all at once."
-"Buy bonds for retirement when you are retired."
-"It is as important to know when to sell a stock, or when to sell it short, as when to buy it."
-"It is an absolute certainty that in the future there will be stock market declines similar to the one in 1987. Some will be more severe and some will last much longer." [Alexander's book was published in 1999 before the major bear market of 2000 -...]
-"During a general bear market put [ALL] your money into cash equivalents like Treasury Bills until the storm blows over...Contrary to popular belief, for all practical purposes there are no stocks to own when the general direction of the market is down."
-"There is certain to be a sell signal for every stock you ever own...Warren Buffett...has shown that the stated policy of the mutual fund industry ['buy and hold'] does in fact work...in a bull market"!
"The market is always right; you either make money or you lose it!"
-"It often happens that the stock that doubles once goes on to double again...the greatest stocks always look expensive."

The book has many more gems and concrete action plans. It is the most useful book for the public I have ever read. It should top Hillary Clinton's autobiography and Harry Potter, but, regrettably, it won't! People will continue to listen to their liars - their brokers, financial planners and mutual fund salespeople, regrettably. A few will read the book, and be wiser, and richer!
Getting better with age..........2002-11-26
The indicators for buying into stocks on both the short and the long side are all standard metrics that are known to intermediate level investors -such as VIX, TRIN, chart patterns such as triangles, lower-low and higher high analysis. Alexander's contribution is to put them together in an action plan. Given this I fail to see why some use this book and obtain poor results. This book is not a substitute for Murphy, or Edwards and Magee, Bulkowski, Achelis or other pure TA books. It is a description of how to integrate TA to actually make trades.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Currently there is no automated planning tool for the optimum positioning of USAF area surveillance assets for a theater level campaign. This research seeks to find the optimum or near optimum placement of the limited USAF airborne surveillance assets against a theater level target set. The problem of finding the optimum orbit points can be modeled as a classic maximal covering location problem (MCLP). Operational constraints on the placement of surveillance aircraft can be handled by preprocessing the potential orbit points to eliminate infeasible orbit points. Heavy emphasis is placed on preprocessing the data to reduce problem size and hence solution time. The aggregation of both the potential orbit points and targets was accomplished without loss of locational information. An existing heuristic was used to find a solution in a very short time. The heuristic finds the optimum orbit points for the available aircraft and any alternate solutions. Allocation decisions can then be accomplished.

A Survivor's Memoir.......2004-03-15
Monique Douglass-Andrews and her family were in search of the American dream. Moving from Washington D.C., to Oregon was the family's attempt at achieving that dream. However, upon arriving in Oregon the Douglass family found turmoil and heartache. The events that took place within this family left the author a fragile and broken soul.
Monique Douglass-Andrews relates to the reader how she and her family were torn apart by adultery, abuse and mental illness. Following the author from childhood to adulthood, we observe how the trauma of sexual abuse leaves her to cope with feelings of self-worthlessness, depression, self-hatred and mental illness. We are also witnesses to Monique's self-destructive behavior, self-exile from her family and failed relationships. Throughout the book we are privy to the resilience of the human spirit, as Monique develops a strength and spirituality that saves her from the brink of mental illness and back to rediscovering her family.
FROM GHETTO TO GLORY: A MEMOIR is a unique survivor's tale which relates the horrors of sexual child abuse and how it haunts its victim well into adulthood. The memoir is touching and hopeful but there are some things that were left unexplained. The tale incorporates aspects of the supernatural that at times left me unsure about what was real versus what was part of Monique's illness. There also seemed to be no resolution as to the status of Monique's illness. I also think that the sections where Monique's "little voice" speaks distracted from the progression and pace of the tale. Still, the memoir is absorbing, and touching.

Amazing book! What a testimony!.......2003-11-30
When I got this book from my local library I had no idea what a powerful impact it would have on my life. Monique Douglass-Andrews is extremely articulate, and her writing style engaged me immediately. I was absorbed in it from the very first page; it was nearly impossible to put down. She is brutally honest about the most difficult times in her life, which has the effect of making her that much more real to her readers. There is no pretense in her writing.
Monique Douglass-Andrews' story is a testament to the power of God to heal and restore us in our broken places, and to bring wholeness when our minds have been shattered.
She is an author I would love to meet in person. I would love to personally tell her how her book has given me the courage to continue my own journey.
This book had such a powerful impact on me that I'm going to buy it immediately so that I can read it over and over again.
A Must Read.......2003-05-23
This book was not only a book I could not put down but it also helped me to realize that I don't have to live with secrets or in fear. I think that the author did an amazing job bringing the reader into the story and back out again with hope and inspiration. It's a definite plus for anyone who thinks they can not overcome the impossible in their lives.

This book was ver Inspirational. It has made me realize that I can overcome any situation. This is a must read book for anybody who has been hurt in their lives. "From Ghetto to Glory" lets us know that through it all God is with us and desires to heal us of our pain. I thank God for the author. I recommend this book for everyone.
Looking for sympathy?.......2003-05-11
This book would have been a really good sob story, but I think you need to change you book or add in the abuse you have placed on other just to be fair and stop trying to make people buy your book becasue they feel sorry and want to hear your "story" of abuse!
