If you want to be lucky, throw away that lottery ticket. How to Make Luck by Marc Myers lets you in on seven secrets of successful and lucky people, from former Washington Post editor Ben Bradlee and the Today Show's Matt Lauer to money manager James O'Shaughnessy and poker champion Barbara Enright. Myers believes that people make their own luck. "The people we think of as lucky behave in ways that are so special and seductive that nearly everyone they meet feels compelled to offer them great opportunities. And it is this wealth of opportunities that allows them to continuously improve their good luck," he writes. Luck, advises Myers, means mastering one or two of these lucky behaviors: Make life look easy, but don't rub it in; make yourself appealing; be as curious as a child; improve the lives of other people; let power brokers own a piece of you; don't burn your bridges. The book includes chapters on each of these secrets as well as interviews with successful people and tips for limiting bad luck. Myers is a fortunate person himself, having risen quickly at the New York Times, Adweek and elsewhere. He is now editor of two national consumer newsletters, Bottom Line/Personal and Moneysworth. The book could be a lucky charm for anyone looking to get ahead, in business and in life. --Dan Ring

5 out of 5 stars Worth reading from the standpoint of becoming anticipatory in your life!.......2006-02-27

If you have subscribed &/or read the series of Bottom Line/Personal newsletter, then you will not be disappointed by this book. The author of this book also happens to be the editor of the newsletter.
In the 80's as well as 90's, I pursued & applied many of the strategies outlined in the newsletter. Some of the strategies have been artfully captured in this wonderful book.
To a lot of people, writings about luck may seem to be hyperbolic stuff. From my personal experience, and I am sure most readers will concur with me, luck is, in reality, OPPORTUNITY + PREPARATION.
Always remember this, opportunity only knocks once at every man's door. So if it comes knocking at your door, & if you are not prepared to receive (in this case, hear) it, it's gone!
In a nut shell, this book shows you how to be prepared for luck. Are you ready?
I would like to say this, the strategies outlined in this book, when applied, will build & enhance your personal anticipatory management skills. Anticipation is a very important skill.

5 out of 5 stars Prepare to Get Lucky.......2006-01-01

"Have you ever said, 'If it weren't for my bad luck, I'd have no luck at all?' According to Marc Myers, author of How to Make Luck, luck is not random at all. Here's how to do it, he claims:
      1. Instead of envying other people's luck, make a list of what is positive in your life. Envy saps luck-attracting energy.
      2. Really connect when you meet people: smile warmly, look in their eyes, remember their name. A chance meeting often brings luck.
      3. Let go of mistakes quickly by focusing on the positive.
      4. Write down your goals and the people who can help you make them happen.
      5. Make time and space for opportunity to knock. If you're too busy running around distracted, you won't recognize a lucky break when it occurs." (review by M.J. Ryan, author of The Happiness Makeover)
I was pleased to find out about this book, as I do believe that laying the right groundwork and positioning yourself for good things to happen will certainly improve your "luck." When people call a good golf shot lucky, my husband says, "The more I practice, the luckier I get." (Virginia Allain)

4 out of 5 stars A practical and useful book.......2002-07-30

This book is great. The title can be a little misleading. The book is about behaviors you can adopt to influence things to go the way you want them to. It's not a new age hocus pocus book. It is a real world street smart book on a variety of ways to influence people and situations to go well for you.

There are a lot of suggestions on improving your luck in addition to the seven main methods that the author lists in the table of contents. Some of it is commonsense, but sometimes we need a reminder. Some of the advice is immeadiately applicable. Get this book!!

5 out of 5 stars Best book since How to Win Friends $ Influence People!.......1999-11-03

There are a lot of self-help books out there, and many of them just saying the same boring thing. This book, however, is really smart and practical. It should rank up there with Napolean Hill and Dale Carnegie as a classic book on creating success. I felt his strategies were very realistic, made a lot of sense, and are doable! Easy to read and very enjoyable. I'd definitely recommend it.

      4 out of 5 stars Luck doesn't just happen--you make it happen.......1999-02-22

It's easy to credit the success of others to luck--just happening to be at the right place at the right time. Not so, says author Marc Myers. Successful people make their own luck, the author says, and he cites case studies to prove his point. What we see as luck is usually the product of lots of hard work, and a willing to take some chances. (I personally know how hard at least one of his subjects worked--which, to me, proves the author's thesis). Certainly worth reading for anyone who wants some clues on what "luck" is all about--and about how the harder you work, the luckier you are apt to be.

Share the joys and secrets of simple but sophisticated baking with Mary Ann Esposito, bestselling author and host of public television's Ciao Italia. From her Neapolitan grandmother's kitchen in America to the kitchens of Italy, Mary Ann Esposito has watched Italian bakers create all sorts of crusty breads and savory delights of every shape and size and adapted them in her latest book, especially designed for the home baker. She presents three simple, versatile doughs that offer endless possibilities for baked goods. There are recipies for every meal, for every course, for every part of the day -- a small, savory snack, a light brunch, a hearty supper, a breakfast coffee cake, or a dazzling dessert. Whether it is stuffed, filled, baked, or rolled, you will find it in What You Knead.

Using just the foundation ingredients of water, yeast, and flour, you'll be surprised by the wide range of possibilities: Make delicious and eye-catching pizzas; snack on fragrant, crusty foccacia; enjoy savory and hearty pot-pies...and that is just the beginning.

Come and learn the secrets of becoming an accomplished home baker with Mary Ann Esposito. Fashion her basic Straight Dough into a homey loaf of country bread; use it as a container for Italian Country Chicken Pie; make it the envelope for double-crusted rosemary and sweet pepper foccacia or the base for Spring Spinach, Prosciutto, and Fontina Tart.

Sharing the techniques passed down from her grandmother, Mary Ann shows you how to make Nonna's Sponge Dough and turn it into dozens of delights such as Roasted Vegetable Calzones or robust Pumpkin Seed, Sage, and Panchetta Bread.

Her easy-to-work-with Simply Sweet Dough offers delicious choices too, from an impressive Fig, Chocolate, and Walnut Tart to the perfect coffee cake. Try a selection of her holiday breads, such as the dense and rich Almond Paste Holiday Bread or Sweet Spiral Wreath. And for special occasions, indulge in Mango and Dried Cherry Pie, Almost Apple Charlotte, and delicate donuts, reminiscent of those found in Sicily, oozing with velvety pastry cream.

What You Knead is the bread book that the home baker can call a friend. Mary Ann Esposito offers you a clear and diverse selection of recipies that are almost effortless. Along the way, step-by-step technique photographs demonstrate the basic building blocks for making dough. With more than 50 recipies and over 170 tantalizing color photographs, this is a must-have for anyone interested in the simple methods of working with yeast doughs.

3 out of 5 stars Not for me.......2000-09-02

I love watching Mary Ann Esposito on her cooking shows. Recently, I saw her making the double foccacia pizza, and thought it would be tasty. So when I went to the library I was happy to see that they had the book, and took it out. For me this is a good way to test drive instructional books, and see if they are worth buying.

This book is divided into three sections. You have recipes using a basic pizza dough, a sour dough, and a sweet dough.

So, I made the recipe for the double foccacia pizza. I followed the instructions carefully for a Kitchen Aid Mixer, using the flour she suggested and weighing it. I wasn't able to make two 16" rounds with half of the dough. The pizza came out very crusty almost like a cracker. My family didn't particular like the taste. The stuffing was fine though, but you have to like the taste of vinegary foods. With the other half of the dough, I made a basic pizza, it was just o.k.

I've had great success with other recipes like The Frugal Gourmet's Chicago style pizza, and from the book "Classic Italian Cooking" for vegetarians.

I didn't want to take the time to make any more recipes to see if they would work. Perhaps, you will have better success!

      4 out of 5 stars A wonderful picture book!.......1998-07-31

This book makes it so easy to bake bread. The three basic recipes are so versatile.

Trades off cycle analysis and various indicators (detrended, money flow, open interest) and divergences. I can't say I will be using any of the methods in this book , but it is written well and explained well .. and for that it gets another star.

4 out of 5 stars A responsive oscillator; need a computer to do it right........1996-12-21

Has developed an oscillator which factors in volume to the oscillator equations. It is very good at picking short term tops and bottoms. He has also defined a stop point that gets taken out only when price has reversed prematurely. I have made money with this but I believe you must study it for awhile to be successful.

          Product Description

New conditions will arise. A new trading public will be born. However, the old cycle of rallies and reactions will roll on. Although originally published in 1931, this classic work remains the benchmark in tape reading and price and volume analysis in speculation. Historically one of the best selling titles on this topic, Tape Reading is a testament to the real genius of Neill and his grasp of human nature. A true pioneer in contrarian thinking, Neill is steadfast in his advice to break away from the unknowing and invariably unsuccessful public: "Beware of the crowd. When everyone thinks alike, watch out. They're probably wrong." Neill s philosophy pushes the reader to study hard and pay his or her dues. He insists that the successful trader is an educated entrepreneur one who can make reasoned decisions based on the movements of price and volume. For Neill, only proper and continuous study equals success. In today s technologically complex trading environment, Neill s simple advice still rings true: Mechanical forecasting will never take the place of intelligent judgment. Neill made a statement to his generation and to all that have followed: don t follow the crowd, learn the tape. 4 out of 5 stars How to interpret market action.......2007-06-25

This is a very good basic guide to reading the ticker tape or level 2 quotes. Even though this book was written in 1930 it is just as useful today. The author explains how to make decisions based solely on market action and ignore tips, opinions, and the media. The ticker tape does not lie watch for sustained price increases on large volume to spot stock operators and money managers taking large positions and get on board after a confirmed move. Trade only 6-12 times a year for intermediate moves or go long, the odds are against successfully scalping a few points here and their. Do not attempt to buy at the bottom or sell at the top, just take the meat of the move as profit. Let winners run but sell losers quickly. This book is 100% focused on the technical aspects of stock trading with fundamentals not mentioned. The author really wants the reader to take away the understanding that all stock prices are based on supply and demand and a stocks true value is the price you can get a buyer to buy it from you. You must trade stocks just like they are merchandise with the intent to sell them for more than you paid for them, reduce the ones that are out of season and hold the ones that are growing in demand. 5 out of 5 stars Big Deal:2000 and Beyond.......2003-11-20

Mr Wasserstein's work is not only very interesting amazingly readable, but also practically very useful and informative for businessmen, researchers, academicians and policy makers.

The Indian Government's policy makers can take a number of ideas from the book before they start experimenting with the unfolding economy, i.e., after decades of controlled regime. The practical and experiential lessons given by the author will help the policy makers navigate more dexterously while sailing on doubtful and controversial waters of corporate legislation and governmental control.
As a Ph D scholar, I find it very useful and I have no hesitation in recommending it to fellow students and to our Institute's (Birla Institute of Management Technology, New Delhi) library.
It would be even more useful if an updated publication of the book may be brought out that would include a chapter on M&A Pricing and Valuation.

What was BW trying to achieve with this book, leaves a reader dis satisfied, their is no continuity in the book and sometimes it seems like several people have written the book, to me it seems like B.W. and several of his underlings sat togather and wrote this book in a single day

                        5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2001-10-24

M&A tycoon Bruce Wasserstein has not just studied the high-stakes world of corporate mergers & acquisitions, he's lived it. As head of M&A at First Boston and then as leader of his own firm, Wasserstein has played a role in many pivotal corporate marriages. In these pages, Wasserstein comprehensively examines the hows and whys of history's largest deals. While skirting the fundamental question of whether mergers & acquisitions enhance or depress shareholder value over the long term, Wasserstein conveys an overwhelming amount of information about the dynamics and tactics that define M&A. The book is enormous and encyclopedic, so it might serve better as a reference text than a straight-through read. We [...] strongly recommend this book for both its compelling historic accounts of Wall Street's most important deals and deal makers and its detailed breakdown of how the game actually works.

                        5 out of 5 stars Very Insightful.......2001-07-14

Unlike most books, which just give the "Who" and "When", Bruce Wasserstein goes a step further with "Why" and "How". He gives in debth reviews of every major acquisition in the 20th Century, as well as a bio on the key players which gives each story a personallity.

4 out of 5 stars The King of the Deal.......2001-06-23

Mr. Wasserstein has written one of the most insightful, interesting books on the subject of M&A activity. The beginning of his book offers a concise, yet informative explanation of how the M&A and LBO businesses came about. A good history for those of us who may not be old enough to remember. The next part of the book deals much more in "big-picture" items. Why competitors in certain industries decided to start getting together, and what the political, regulatory and industry climate was at the time that drove such mergers. It is one thing to read newspaper stories of these deals-it is completely different when the story comes from the mouth of the banker who was sitting next to the CEO in the boardroom. The last section deals more in the nuts-and-bolts of doing actual deals. While on its own, it can get a little dry, this last section discusses a host of issues pertinent to getting a deal done, dealing with a number of political and regulatory requirements.

All in all, if you want to know the whole story behind those WSJ headlines, read this book. A great, in-depth study of what it is like advising on some of the largest deals this generation (or any other) has ever seen. Theory is great, but in the end, what counts is closing the deal, and this book tells how it all happens.

                          Book Description

This book summarises the results of a study on behalf of the European Commission. It presents estimates of effective average tax rates (EATR) in five EU Member States plus the USA. The main aim is to compare EATR on domestic investments by companies. A secondary aim is to work out the impact of the different tax drivers on the tax burden. The comparison is made in six stages: - Comparison of the EATR for a base case - Effects of alternative assumptions on the economic data - Comparative effects of the German tax reform from 1 January 2001 - Consequences of the most important tax reforms since 1995 - Effects of hypothetical tax reforms - Comparison with results obtained from other studies.

5 out of 5 stars For Hockey Lovers Everywhere..........2001-03-27

I just finished reading Hockeytown Hero: The Steve Yzerman Story. Finally, a biography written for kids about our Detroit Red Wings Captain! Author Shelley Lazarus includes interviews with Yzerman, his teammates, and other hockey legends, including Scotty Bowman and Bryan Trottier.

I thought the book was well written; a great story told artfully. Trust me when I say grown ups will enjoy it as much as the kids! While the book focuses on Yzerman's hockey career -- from the time he first skated at age three, through two Stanley Cup championships -- I really enjoyed the personal glimpses and photographs included as well. Yzerman's parents even provide team pictures of his early years as a "Moose Pup All-Star" (age 8.)

I already bought copies for my neices & nephews, and saved one for myself, too! You've got to read this book.

                            1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money.......2004-08-04

I would have bought this anyway, just because I collect all Yzerman things. That's the only reason.
I was extremely disappointed. It's obviously just a compilation of everything he could find that had already been used. I don't think I saw anything in the book that I didn't already know. The kids he talks about in the book are ones 'like' the children Yzerman visited. It's pretty obvious the guys never actually spoke to Yzerman or the kids he visited. The only pic of Yzerman that I can recall is a small black and white that I've seen several times before. I think he was just trying to use Yzerman's name to sell his book.
I would recommend any other Yzerman book over this one.
I prefer 'Heart of a Champion' myself.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth it.......2002-07-07

When I saw "A Wing and a Hero" was published by 1st Books, a web-based publisher for first-time authors, I figured I'd get a copy and support an aspiring writer like myself. Besides, being a huge fan of Steve Yzerman since he first came to Detroit in 1983, I'm always on the lookout for new books about him and the Red Wings. I was not prepared to be sorely disappointed.

This book is awful. It's poorly written, poorly organized and definitely not worth the money. In the acknowledgements, Mr. Morrison states that he sent a copy of the transcript to Steve Yzerman, hoping to get his okay to call it an authorized biography. He didn't get it and it's no wonder - this book is a disaster.

I own several books about Steve and the Red Wings, and I would recommend any of them over "A Wing and a Hero," including Bruce Dowbiggin's "Of Ice and Men," even with all its inaccuracies. If you'd like to read a well-written, authorized biography of Steve, get Shelly Lazarus' "Hockeytown Hero." Yes, it's written more or less for kids, but it's good and probably the best Yzerman biography out there.

I've given "A Wing and a Hero" one star, only because Amazon.com's system won't let me give it less than that.

This book was very inspiring and it is good to know that there is still a hero out there in the likes of Steve Yzerman. I really enjoyed reading A Wing And A Hero and would recommend it to other readers.
