Customer Reviews:
Excellent companion.......2007-08-28
I found the book to be an excellent companion to the All-in-One by Shon Harris. Great for review of knowledge, or as a springboard into the material covered by the CBK.
A must for initial review.......2007-07-11
This book is a must for initial review. It covers all 10 areas of what needs to be studied in a clear and easy to understand way. It is not, however, detail enough to get you pass the test. You need something more detailed and more sample test questions.
Read This Book First.......2006-12-20
CISSP -- Certified Information Systems Security Professional
After reading this book you can't be considered a Dummy any more. Nor, however, do I think you'll be ready to call yourself a Professional.
The real strength of this book is that is is so simple, so well written, so complete in its subject coverage that giving it a quick read will give you the overall view of where you want to be when you are ready to call yourself a Professional. This book is also quite inexpensive when compared with some of the other exam preparation guides, and especially when compared to some of the classes offered either in person or on CD.
The book is organized about like you would expect with a separate chapter on each of the ten domains that are covered on the exam. There are a number of other useful security certifications such as those put out by Check Point, Cisco and others. He covers each of these to the point of at least letting you know what they are, i.e. the Check Point certifications cover the use of the Check Point Firewall products. The book is supplied with a CD that includes additional sample testing and other materials.
Recommendation: Read this book first for an overall view, then study one of the harder books.
A good first read, but you risk a false sense of security.......2006-03-05
I just recieved word last week I passed my CISSP exam, and I used this book among others to study for it. Let me give you a little background: I've been in IT for 10 years, starting as phone support, and moved on to desktop support, LAN administration, Exchange administrator, and eventually became my company's ISSO, then moved on to become an Information Assurance (Security) Engineer on one of our larger programs. Consequently, I had real world experience in many of the domains already.
Despite this, I think if I had only read this book, I would have failed the test. It is an excellent starter, since you can sit down and read it cover to cover in a day (plenty of white space, large font etc.) and you will get a good outline of the ten domains. But it just doesn't go into enough detail to keep you from getting tripped up on the test. A Section that is particularly lacking is cryptography. I don't think a single question on the test would have been answered from the knowlege I gained in that section.
The CD-Rom practice test is also too easy. I finished the book, took the 260 question test immediately afterwards, and scored ~95%. I then went online to the cccure.org website quizzer (which I highly recommend) and scored a 65% on their test!
Bottom line, if some one else has it, borrow it for your first read, it won't hurt and is a good way to get started, just don't stop there!
A book I highly reccomend is the CISSP prep guide by Krutz
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/047126802X/ref=cm_lm_fullview_prod_6/103-8873493-6496642?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=283155
The advanced questions at the end of each chapter are excellent. Remember, (ISC)2 jealously guards the actual test questions, and changes them all the time, so brain dumps are a waste in my humble opinion, but this book closely matches the conceptual depth and breadth you need to be confident of passing the exam.
Nothing is wrong with the book - just not enough.......2006-02-10
I sat for and passed the CISSP test in January 2006. I used the following resources to help in passing the CISSP:
Shon Harris - All-in-One - 3rd Edition - 30%
Official ISC Guide to the CISSP Exam - 15%
Kurtz - CISSP Prep Guide - Gold Edition - 10%
CISSP for Dummies - 5%
Cccure.org - 25%
Other resources - 15%
"CISSP for Dummies" by Miller is a decent tool at preparing for the exam. I had thought this book would be a great cram book (if possible for the CISSP), where the `core' topics would be documented. After referencing the book, I do not feel this to be true and stopped referring to the book after the first few chapters. I did not find any typos or editorial mistakes, so while I do not think the book is necessarily wrong, I just do not feel it is nearly enough to pass the CISSP. Everything found in "CISSP for Dummies" can be found in other books/material. Please see my other reviews to see how I rated other books that I used to help pass the CISSP.
I give this book 3 pings out of 5:
!!..!
Book Description
* Case studies that follow the design process form initial consultation to the end of the pilot.
* Cuts the fluff by providing just the information needed to pass the test rather than reviewing its objectives.
* CD-ROM includes fully customizable test-prep software with hundreds of sample questions modeled on actual CCNP exam questions.
Customer Reviews:
A great place to start.......2004-07-15
This book does a good job of introducing the reader to many of the concepts covered in the CCNP cert exams. If you need a straightforward, plain-language primer on routing protocols, spanning tree, connection options, and support, this is a great book. Unfortunately, it usefulness is limited for some of the details on the 642 series of tests. I *would* recommend this book as part of a layered studying approach to the exams. Additional resources will be more clear after reading this book.
Not enough to pass CCNP.......2003-04-29
This book is more useful for final revision for the CCNP. It does not cover any topic in enough detail to give you the depth of understanding you need for the CCNP. The CD that comes with the book is TERRIBLE. It has errors, missing portions and shows that it was rushed out without any proper quality checking. In short, stick to the Cisco Press books for CCNP information.

Good stuff.......2007-06-08
This book really didn't break any new ground, but then again, it's a "Dummies" book. I made an oral presentaiton out of it and it was a smash hit!
Great information for growing my business.......2003-08-20
I really like that the Dummies series are so comprehensive and I can go straight to the chapters that best serve my needs. In Professional Networking for Dummies, the section for Entrepreneurs and Personality Styles was most helpful. By giving me examples of "what to say" and how to be effective even as an introvert, I am feeling much more effective with my networking.
Pretty mediocre.......2002-06-01
A lot of filler, a lot of common sense. Not a whole lot of techniques, useful advice or even general theory to help you out here. Basically be outgoing and nice to people.
So you want to be a success?.......2001-10-30
One of the essential ingredients to the success of a business is the owner's ability AND WILLINGNESS to use his or her network effectively. Donna Fisher is the master teacher of the power of networking - something many people don't understand or are not even aware of. Professional Networking for Dummies is one of several powerful books tbat Donna Fisher has written on this subject. It should be a must read for everyone, from the youngest to the oldest.
Must own for those wanting to grow their biz or get a job!.......2001-10-15
This is well-outlined, fun, informative book with ideas that can be actioned immediately.
I teach this topic and now I have found my required reading textbook!

Almost enough........2001-06-09
I being a fan of Dummies certifications books, I pick one up for every certification I am going to pursue. I don't just buy the Dummies books though. I buy at least two others. When I see something odd in one I consult the other two, and two out of three wins. The only problem I have with this book is the CD, there are no simulations exam questions on it. Oh, by the way I received a 960 on this test.
Just great.......2000-05-04
I heard about the MCP exams and wanted to do one. I was most familiar with Win 98. The stuff you need to know for the exam is not covered in normal 98 books. I decided to buy this book because of it's positive reviews. I did not know much about networking or the other exam stuff. This book will show you 90% percent of what you need to know. I also used the MS readiness review and the resource kit that comes with the 98 CD. If you do not know much about it start with this one. I passed with a score of 800.
Clears the Fog.......2000-03-08
Like many of you I am self taught. I purchased the Microsoft training manuals, test questions as well as many other books. I found the manuals and the Win98 Resourse kit neccessary but also very technical and confusing at times. The dummy book cleared the fog. I found the test questions to be much like the real exam. Beware though, the test has simulations that the Dummies book does not go into in enough detail for the test questions. Also suggest taking Transcenders. With out this book I would not have passed.
Good book for preparing for the exam.......2000-02-20
This book is excellent for passing the windows 98 exam. It does have some mistakes and misses steps when setting up policies on a Netware network with Windows 98 workstations. Used a lot of different books to prepare for the exam (Ziff-Davis certication book, Readiness Review, Exam Cram, and others)and I found this book and Transender to be all I needed to pass the exam. Hands on experience is also helpful.
Good MCSE book.......2000-01-02
Good book. Very few errors. I read this and used the MS Windows 98 Resource Kit(On the MS Windows 98 CD) as refrence and passed the test first try. The book doesn't cover everything, but along with the Win 98 Res Kit it is all you need and the only book you will have to *buy*.

The most well rounded pastry source for the professional........1999-03-16
The Classic and Contemporary Recipes of Yves Thuries: French Pastry is without a doubt my favorate source for pastries. I am a 1984 graduate of the Culinary Institue of America and I currently own my own restaurant in Grand Lake Colorado. I only wish that Chef Thuries' book hadn't taken so long to become recognized in the states. This book has been long awaited in its translation.
Clear and precise study of the Pastry Arts! Shear Perfection.......1999-02-07
Yves THURIES has put on paper an incredible study of the pastry arts! He has presented an organized, detailed and interesting study . His text is easy to follow and it captures you to move on to the next skill. Every possible detail is explained allowing one to move through the recipes without culinary stress. I have met Yves THURIES and found him to be a genuine master of the culinary arts. I found this book to be a life long reference book on the level of an encyclopaedia. I recommend this book for those that understand that it is not just pastry but it is an art form to be enjoyed and respected. Chef R. Sebastian-Young

In this lavishly illustrated volume master chef Yves Thuries introduces the innovations that have revolutionized French pastry over the last 30 years.
Mr. Thuriès introduces lighter fillings that freeze wellâcreams and moussesâinstead of the classic buttercreams. In addition, he shows readers step-by step how to: assemble cakes more easily with cake rings, cake frames, sheet pans, and other molds, create today's light, natural decorations with fruit, fruit gelées, and chocolate, create incomparable croquembouche ("crunch in the mouth") delicacies, and much, much more!

This is what the French are Doing.......2000-05-26
This is an excellent professional level book. I like that it is full of color photos and easy to understand diagrams. It is a very good introduction to what the title implies- Modern French Pastry. This book is not for the home cook, but does offer lots of ideas to the professional pastry chef.
Book Description
NOTE: THIS EDITION OF THE BOOK IS ONLY AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE TO PEOPLE LIVING OUTSIDE THE UK AND BRITISH COMMONWEALTH COUNTRIES If you want to get rich, no matter how inexperienced you are in investment, this book can help you. Its message is that you must learn neither to avoid risk nor to court it foolhardily, but to manage it - and enjoy it too. The 12 Major and 16 minor Zurich Axioms contained in this book are a set of principles providing a practical philosophy for the realistic management of risk, which can be followed successfully by anyone, not merely the 'experts'. Several of the Axioms fly right in the face of the traditional wisdom of the investment advice business - yet the enterprising Swiss speculators who devised them became rich, while many investors who follow the conventional path do not. Max Gunther, whose father was one of the original speculators who devised the Axioms, made his first capital gain on the stock market at the age of 13 and has never looked back. Now the rest of us can follow in his footsteps. Startlingly straightforward, the Axioms are explained in a book that is not only extremely entertaining but will prove invaluable to any investor, whether in stocks, commodities, art, antiques or real estate, who is willing to take risk on its own terms and chance a little to gain a lot. contents Introduction: What the Axioms Are and How They Came to Be The First Major Axiom: On Risk The Second Major Axiom: On Greed The Third Major Axiom: On Hope The Fourth Major Axiom: On Forecasts The Fifth Major Axiom: On Patterns The Sixth Major Axiom: On Mobility The Seventh Major Axiom: On Intuition The Eighth Major Axiom: On Religion and the Occult The Ninth Major Axiom: On Optimism and Pessimism The Tenth Major Axiom: On Consensus The Eleventh Major Axiom: On Stubbornness The Twelfth Major Axiom: On Planning [The 16 Minor Axioms appear within each of the chapters on the Major Axioms]
Customer Reviews:
Too Generic.......2007-09-23
This book was a bit of an enigma to me. The Axioms themselves are great. However, the stories/illustrations given are so terribly generic any 1/2-creative storyteller could come up with them. The only specifics given are his dad's name, and the name of a bank his dad worked for. Strangely enough, every time he mentions his dad in this book, he uses the man's full name. When have you ever used your dad's name in full, and would you do it dozens of times if you wrote a book?
I do stand by the 2 stars, though, as the Axioms themselves, I think, have some merit, if not Gunther's explanations & applications.
I wouldn't recommend it to anyone else. If you want to read a book about the stock market, get one written by someone you've heard of & that you know has been successful in the market, like Warren Buffett, (who hasn't written a book, but has written publicly-available shareholder letters & has a couple biographies out).
Contrarian views on wealth accumulation.......2007-09-06
I bought this book based on a recommendation from a part-time trader friend. He mentioned that Zurich Axioms will be one book that should be re-read during tumultuous times to reaffirm one's investment thesis.
Having read the book, I totally agree and also find the key takeaway to be a major shift in my thinking on investment. If you are looking for unconventional wisdom and contrarian views on risk and rewards, Zurich Axioms is difinitely for you! One really needs to be a maverick in order to appreciate the finer points raised.
You will read it more than once.......2007-04-30
This book is filled with gold. It is fun to read and you may not even notice how much valuable information you will find in each page. The axioms cover so many areas of human psychology and trading that you may only later realize what you have in your hands.
It does not go into details about trading strategies, money management (apart from the basic but fundamental ones such as "cut your losses" and "realize your profits early") and position sizing. But this is not what this book is about. It is an eye opener with key fundamental ideas and principles that you will soon or later find more than essential.
Two of the many fundamental principles stated there that many people ignore - and many may not see their full value at first reading (or even later!):
- do not diversify your capital allocated to risk investments if your goal is growth,
- to invest is essentially to speculate.
You will be more than excused to read about speculation when others think that you should be reading about investing. You will understand why.
Yet it is not a perfect book. It gives no value to any kind of technical analysis or trading system. But it is so, because it does focus on a healthy scepticism - which is without doubt better than taking the opposite side! So its shortcomings are forgiven.
Not often will you find this kind of information packed in a concise, straightforward and fun-to-read style. A great book! Highly recommended for just anyone.
Outstanding book on investing.......2007-01-04
I have been a professional investor for about 15 years. If I had to choose only one book for my bookshelf, The Zurich Axioms would be it.
Consider the puzzle of Switzerland. It's a rocky country, half the size of Maine. It has not one inch of seacoast, no oil, and a climate and topography that is inhospitable to farming. It has stayed out of wars for 300 years because no invader really wanted it. Yet the Swiss are among the most affluent people in the world. How? By being the world's cleverest investors and speculators.
This book suggests that to make any kind of gain in life, you must place some of your material and/or emotional capital at risk. The Swiss conclude that the sensible way to conduct one's life is not to shun risk but to expose oneself to it deliberately. To make money you must bet, but not in a mindless way. To bet, instead, with care and in such a way that large gains are more likely than large losses.
There are twelve major "axioms" or rules that guide investors to much better results. This book is a simple read with powerful rules. If you follow these guidelines, investing success will be much easier. But, of course, most people will let their emotions get in the way and let hope, greed, and stubbornness dominate. They will listen to "experts" make forecasts and make investments accordingly. And, as you can imagine, most investors will do very poorly.
Buy this inexpensive book and take the axioms to heart. It will make you a much better investor.
Amazing Insight.......2006-12-31
Traders always talk about the "holy grail" in trading. This is usually referring to a method or system that just cranks out money with little effort. It is generally conceded that there is no "holy grail" but I think this book gets as close to defining "holy grail" trading rules as any I've read. I've been trading for 30 years and from my experience, I believe this book holds the keys to successful speculation.

Book Description
This book responds to a paradox. A paradox of rates and revenues. Tax rates in less developed countries (LDCs) are often higher than those rates in industrialized countries. Conversely, tax revenues, as a percentage of GNP, are ordinarily much less for LDC governments than for their counterparts. One half of this conundrum is often used to explain the other. Increased capital flight (of both money and people) into domestic underground and/or external economies is deemed an escape from escalating taxes -- higher tax rates and narrower tax bases perversely accentuating each other.
This book provides a resolution of the rates & revenue paradox that is both more fundamental than "supply-side" cuts in tax rates and more certain of yielding the increased revenues that are promised by such cuts. Its authors show how governments might receive increased revenues -- even with no changes in explicit tax policies -- by decreasing the (taxlike) burdens on citizens of nontax, non-revenue-generating policies.
The mandates of regulatory and other non-tax policies seldom yield revenues to government. But, just like taxes, they affect the production and consumption choices of individuals and their associated prices. By attending to the tax-like effects of non-tax policies, this volume emphasizes the need to enhance understanding of the consequences of both tax and nontax policies for economic growth and equity.
Understanding readers of this book will find themselves demanding new questions, not merely additional answers. For example: Should explicit taxes have their rates raised, their points of incidence lowered, their implementation more extensively and rigorously applied? This volume demonstrates that ANY answer to these questions is unsatisfactory in the absence of asking and answering another: whether and to what extent nontax policies are More Taxing Than Taxes?
