Traditional insurance is examined, but also alternative arrangements for financial security, such as compensation funds. A hilarious read full of much truth but lacking specific ..........2001-03-09

directions. Kennedy offers many platitudes regarding most of societies accepted notions about work and success. And generally I agree with the vast majority of his assertions which very adequately debunk the traditional thinking. But I found the book to be most useful (at least to me) in terms of validating many of my own beliefs rather than describing the manner in which to accomplish certain goals. For example, Mr. Kennedy basically states that we just need to take action. I certainly concur insofar as action always beats inaction but then there is no supporting instruction on how to take action. And unfortunately many people have no concept of just how to take action.

Even though Mr. Kennedy offers many great examples of particular actions taken by many self starters I feel that many readers would not be able to apply the general concepts to their own lives or endeavors. For example, I might have suggested that the text include the suggestion to evaluate all of the various actions that could possibly be taken regardless of how simple or improbable they may seem. After having a good list of possible actions then it would be advisable to select the best 3 based upon important criteria which might include level of effort, cost, time required and likelihood to succeed to name only a few. From those three it would then be advisable to proceed with the best one. In my mind that is understandable and practical. It is unrealistic to expect that people who have no history or experience with taking initiative or being entrepreneurial will have any clue about what truly taking action means.

Having said that... the book is truly an inspiration and certainly served to get my juices flowing again. Not to mention the fact that it is an easy and extremely enjoyable read. The story about the guy with the Ivan Boesky connection practically had me fallen out of my chair laughin'.

In short I love Mr. Kennedy's style, agree with his beliefs and his suggested actions but I feel the book is deficient in specific instruction. But I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to take charge of their career and more importantly their life.

WAKE UP AND SMELL REALITY.......2000-07-25

Finally, someone has come and exploded all of those tried and true myths of success. A customer is always right, right? NOT! Just think positive and all good things will come to you. What other good jokes do you know?

In this hilarious book Dan Kennedy forces you to come to grips with reality and examine those micky mouse rules of success that have been ingrained in our minds. He shows the absurdity of them and encourages us to seek alternative avenues of self-fulfillment if we're going to make it in the business world. Nice guys finish last so smarten up.

No Rules is funny, insane and will offend those purists of positive thinking and other ideas of fair play. Come on folk, we live in a cut throat, competitive culture which calls for drastic measures. Get with the program is Dan's battle cry and wake up.

Despite the fact that Dan debunks the rules, he creates his own which are just as bad. He gives you the feeling that honesty is out and that being crude, rude and plain obnoxious is the way to success. Like everything else you must proceed with caution in swallowing his lines. The positive thing that must be said of this book is that it teaches us not to take things at face value. All ideas are open to critique and yes rules need to be broken in order to progress. First off I'd like to say that Dan Kennedy is not for everyone nor does he want to be. Some of what he says goes against what is taught in business as well as what is dictated to us from technology. He puts things bluntly, truthfully and as basic as can be. His books are not for whiners, babies or wimps. With that aside I give this rave reviews. He rights with a statement then example over and over again to write a very good book.

The message? "Challenge it all" and "don't be intimidated by authority". How? Contradict it all. Shake it up. Dan Kennedy's medium? Use a curiosity generating book title (No rules!) that threatens to debunk and make a mockery of established success formulas, then repeatedly quote from the classics anyway ... but put a spin on the interpretation (...this is what Peal really meant, p4). That seems to be Dan Kennedy's formula. Well done. My advice, however...stick with the classics - Napolean Hill, Clement Stone and Maxwell Maltz. Dan's book simply recycles the classics as it suits him, self promotes his other book and relies on annectdotal evidence (some of it incorrect, eg.p13- Darren Bennett was not an Australian Soccer Player!) Frustrating are the contradictions for which Dan apologizes in the introduction. Dan Kennedy writes in an entertaining, provocative manner. But in the end, it is a "me too" a generic with modern examples but adding little original thinking. If you are serious, get the full story, get the classics.

WOW - we have been so excited by this book. I was desperate for something that would help me plan meals for the week without doing casseroles or having to cook everything at once and stick it in the freezer. This system allows you to eat FRESH meals without recreating the base ingredients every time. Having the meat and vegetables already prepared for the week takes tons of time away from meal prep. Slicing and dicing is the primary time-consuming element.

The book makes a statement we've found absolutely true: We can enjoy meals that taste like we've gone to a restaurant, and we've spent far less time and money. I also appreciate the lack of processed-food ingredients in the meals. The butter and fat content is a bit high, but I substitute olive oil nearly 100% of the time for better heart health. We haven't found anything that we don't want to try again!

LOVE the colorful photos. They inspire me to create something new. I'm also learning to create my own new recipes that use leftover meats, vegetables and breads into later meals. It's been a great cooking school!

A real Treat.......2003-03-08

With two active teenagers, and a demanding full-time job, I find it a challenge to get healthy, well-balanced meals on the table sometimes. Many of the common cook-for-the-month plans rely heavily on casseroles and starchy dishes. This book is different. Simple, elegant preparation for the weekend meal. The "leftovers" reappear later in the week in a number of guises - ethnic and spicy, simple and kid-friendly, the whole spectrum. A really nice variety. And the main courses are those we often prepare - roast chicken, grilled fish, flank steak. The creative part is in the use of leftover meats and side dishes. My only concern is that it's a paperback - I may wear it out! A spiral bound version would be so much nicer.

Easy, Delicious and Nutritious.......2001-02-12

This is a great cookbook for busy people who like to eat delicious, healthy, creative meals. The recipes are easy to follow, with short ingredient lists. The preparation is simple but elegant. And the main idea behind this book, that you can "cook big" on the weekend and still not be doomed to eat exactly the same thing as leftovers for the rest of the week, is a lifesaver for me. The pictures are beautiful and the layout is easy to read. My only concern is that the binding will not hold up to years of use in the kitchen. I checked this book out of the library and liked it so much that I am now buying a copy.

I normally do not like most books written on the subject of futures trading. All the way from their bombastic titles to the poorly thought out ideas which lose money consistently.This book is different. It contains a lot of new ideas and some pretty interesting information. The chapter on "split openings" is well worth the price of the book alone. It is a very good manual for short term traders, particularly day traders.

Good Starting Place.......2000-11-14

As a project manager who picked up integrating a merger as one of his projects, I found this book to be very helpful. Mergers bring out confusion, tension and stress to all sides. This book focused on how to bridge these gaps through effective communication and project management.

Particularly, I found chapter 10 (General Guidelines for Merger/Acquisition Management) insightful and I used the checklists in this chapter in portions of our integration effort. What I felt this book missed were templates designed to immediately pick up and use in my everyday life.

I found the book is a quick read-I read it on one airplane trip. Many of the comments are very simple and fall into the category of common sense. However, in much of this common sense many of the problems of integrating two companies exist.

"The Authoritative Guide"? Give me a break!.......1999-12-30

This book should have been an short magazine article. The authors basically dissect one concept over and over and over: change is disruptive. There is very little useful information in this book. It points out all of the obvious and frequently-stated problems that come with change - productivity suffers, commitment is lost, etc., etc., etc., but gives no insight in how to fix the problems (unless you count these golden nuggets- "Keep your eye on the ball" and "Provide direction"). The one chapter that I hoped would shed some light on tactics - "Integration Project Management" - was pure fluff. It offered such pearls of wisdom as "It is helpful to look at the integration process as a logical sequence of steps designed to help bring the two organizations together." Not only is this a "Duh" statement, but it shows up in chapter 8! I would expect to read something like that in the introduction. And chapters 5 and 6 state that you should evaluate key talent in the aquired firm - but no where in these chapters does it tell you how to do it! I guess you have call up Pritchett & Associates (and fork over big $$) for the details. My only guess is that the authors kept the book generic on purpose so that companies would call and ask about their consulting services. My advice: save your money for a real book, and just call up Pritchett & Associates for their marketing literature.

Harry gives 'em hell............and a lot more!!! .......2007-06-18

Reading this book offers you a unique experience: suddenly you begin to think you're like you're being in a room with Harry S. Truman, or like you're strolling through town with him. Of course, mr. Truman does most of the talking, accompanying with loud laughing, grinning and gesturing. He is outspoken in his likes and dislikes, in his judgements of people, places and events, and yet modest about his own important role in history.

A delightful man, humourous, and sharp, but also a highly intelligent one, made all the more so by his down-to-earth ordinary-citizen-common ense. He really had that, it was not some gimmick or spin-doctored image-trick. In my opinion Harry S. Truman was the last American statesman of whom one could truthfully say: what you see (and what you hear) is what you get.
And even such a statement, doesn't cover it, because Truman gave his country more than his farmer's wit, his snappy one-liners, and his plain-spoken common sense. He turned out to possess true and profound wisdom: he devised, shaped and carried out new foreign policies, new internal policies and proved to be a great and visionary president in a time when America and the world really needed one. He took some tough decisions which, in the end, all turned out to be the right ones (dropping the bomb on Japan, sacking MacArthur, getting involved in Korea, desegregating the armed forces).

He truly was, from 1945 to 1952, the right man for the job, more than that, he was the best man for the job. In 1952 the best man of all possible candidates in the American politicial landscape did not win the presidency, but a far better man than many did lose it.
Having lost, Truman did not fret, brood and rage, but with dignity handed the reins of power over to Eisenhower and simply went back to Missouri.

Hearing mr. Truman, reading his words, one realizes people of his stature are sadly lacking in today's world. One can't help but shiver in pained horror thinking of those power-hungry intellectual and moral pygmies who govern your country now, or when thinking of the unprincpled and egotistical intellectual and moral pygmies who are trying to get to govern your country in two years time. Mr Bush and Mr Cheney, but also you Mrs Clinton: you're not even fit to wash Mr Truman's car, walk his dog, or shine his shoes.

A great book about a truly great man. I raced through the book and at the end was left wishing it to be longer.
So now I started in David McCullough's "Truman". A 1000 pages of Harry, his life and times. That should keep me a while.

Buy "Talking with Harry"!! It's well worth the money, the time and the effort. Be educated, entertained and touched by the words of the 33rd President. Highly recommended.

A magnificent study of egotism at its fullest. It is easy to understand why Holmes reached the status that he did, because he spent his life in an effort to maintain the social status that he thought was his. He may have been an intellectual, but it seems he directed his efforts at establishing and maintaining a position that he thought was rightfully that of the upper class of which he considered himself supreme. A good read about a man who obtained a position in history that he did not deserve.
