Book Description
Financial reform has been a major concern for China's transitional economy - especially in the realms of banking and insurance - since accession to the WTO in 2001. This book scrutinizes the development and limitations of these industries during the process of institutional transformation, and demonstrates that they are now facing severe challenges as well as opportunities.
The relationships between the market structure, behavior and performance of China's banking and insurance industries are analyzed. The strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threat (SWOT) approach is utilized in investigating the impact of WTO accession on Chinese banking and insurance, and strategies for the prevention of future financial crises are prescribed.
Exploring the juxtaposition of institutional transformation in China and the financial risk inherent in the old system, the book concludes that with WTO accession and the opening up of financial services to foreign companies, competitiveness will become fiercer, resulting in increased uncertainty, intensifying the level of risk even further.
Banking and Insurance in the New China will prove invaluable to multinational enterprise managers, brokers, dealers and investors, business economists, students and academics with a specific interest in the Chinese economy.

Book Description
The World Trade Organization will become the overall and comprehensive multilateral framework for regulating international trade and trade-related matters. Notwithstanding major achievements made during eight years of negotiations, there will be new challenges requiring rules and regulations in areas not yet adequately covered. Economists, lawyers and authors from trade unions and private companies approach the issues of regionalism, labour standards and environmental protection from different angles and from the North--South perspective. The first challenge is to bring about a `level playing field'; this book tackles key questions such as the types of standards that are required, the roles of institutions and the enforcement mechanisms with regard to trade related investment measures, intellectual property rights, labour and environmental conditions. The second challenge is the new wave of regional preferential trade systems: this book deals with the WTO compatibility of these far-reaching integration schemes and the lessons for global liberalisation that might be learned from these regional experiments. This book is an important and timely resource for those who are interested and involved in the shaping of the new World Trade Organization.

How to gain power in the workplace by effectively developing a strong and unique voice.Sarah Myers McGinty examines the social and psychological elements of language in the workplace. She then uses her conclusions to give us a better understanding of whos in charge and how to get ahead. Complete with strategies for individuals who want to strengthen their personal communication skills, Power Talk is a must-read for anyone who wants to learn to be their own best spokesperson.
Download Description
We are what we say. Now Sarah Myers McGinty, Ph.D., takes up where Deborah Tannen left off to delve into the ways our speech creates our identity. In this breakthrough book, McGinty shows how a little attention to our verbal patterns helps us alter the balance of power and always come out ahead. You're a model employee who always does quality work, yet you are forced to watch helplessly as others get the credit and the rewards. Why? Studies show that people who project expertise and authority, people who sound like they're in charge, often win the acclaim. On the other hand, people who try to take over every situation or come on too strongly can silence their colleagues and miss critical information. In Power Talk , author Sarah Myers McGinty identifies two basic modes of communication: Language from the Center and Language from the Edge. While Language from the Center projects authority, Language from the Edge is collaborative, responsive, and often equally effective. Here McGinty argues that to be truly successful you can't get trapped in just one speaking mode--you need both. What are the secrets to speaking from the center--showing the people around you that you know what you're doing and have the ability to lead? What is the art of speaking from the edge--getting your point across without losing the consensus you need for team success? Power Talk breaks down actual workplace conversations, studying the messages hidden in every word choice, every phrase, even in every inflection. A remarkable study of language itself, this book will help you:* Analyze your own speech patterns and see whether your words fit the world of your work * Learn which situations call for Language from the Center and which call for Language from the Edge * Practice new ways of presenting information and ideas for your next meeting * Communicate more effectively with e-mail and voice mail, and play telephone tag like a pro. Examining the issue of gende
Customer Reviews:
Power Talk????.......2005-03-31
It seems as if authors and publishers have decided to sell something that is marginal at best, just include the words Power,Prestige, wealth all seemingly offering some simple strategy to imporove and empower your life, Power talk fails to live up to its title. It is a ok book on how we talk and what the 2 distinct communication styles are all about. But it doesnt take a 200 page book to tell us that the key is to merge the two? This book is geared towards salespeople and corporate executives, if you work for a firm of 20 or less this probably won't help much. The key to success is adaptation to the enviroment your in rather than discuss key words or stratagies for enhancing vocabulary, structure , etiquitte this book just rehashes the adaptation philosophy. Probably great for some but the majority will just be wasting their time with this title.
Semi-helpful.......2003-07-31
The first six chapters are helpful and contain useful information about the use of Language from the Center and from the Edge. However, the next two chapters are simply the author's social commentary about not pre-judging people on their differences in communication. The last chapter is just an overview of the study of linguistics.
An excellent book for consultants and salespeople.......2003-07-11
This book made a profound difference in the way I conduct my business. I was an "Edge" person to the extreme. I had always been taught that asking questions and constantly probing was the best and most powerful way to deal with clients and prospects. Not so! There's a time to stop asking and start "telling."
My clients want confident advice from me. They don't want to sit around and explore options forever. I do not understand some of the negative reviews of this book. I found it to be a great help.
DIDN'T HELP AT ALL.......2002-03-01
I really don't think that changing my voice mail will help me succeed in my corporation. The author talks about mixing two forms of language (Edge and Center) to have a perfect communication with the people you work with (employees, employers, boss, etc) and never tells you how to mix these concepts... and besides, if a certain form of language works for me, center or edge, I really don't see the point on changing the way I speak.I never close a book forever before finishing it but after reading a couple of pages after the middle of the book and realized that I could be reading something else so I decided to stop with the torture.
Not helpful.......2002-02-13
This book was full of everyday scenarios, which were interpreted in a very narrow way to show the author's point. The connections between the examples and her points were vague at best. The real problem with this book is that it would only appeal to those with very little self-confidence, and if that person took the advice to heart the result would be laughable.

From the Publisher How did you sound at your last meeting -- and how were you perceived? Is your speech style holding you back? In this breakthrough book, linguistic expert Sarah Myers McGinty shows you how to evaluate your communication skills and make your everyday speech more effective. Book Description
According to a recent survey, 14 million Americans call themselves vegetarians. Of that, only 2 million eat no animal meat whatsoever. The remaining 12 million are "part-time vegetarians" who eat fish, poultry, or red meat on occasion. For this large and growing group, Linda Rosenweig offers a cookbook to satisfy vegetarians and nonvegetarians alike.
Rosenweig's experience stems from years developing recipes for Weight Watchers, Prevention, and Good Housekeeping magazines. Her 225 vegetarian recipes in Vegetarian and More! include "Quick Conversions," allowing readers to easily add meat, poultry, or fish to some or all of the recipe. These are especially convenient for "split houseolds," where only a few members are vegetarians. The focus is on simplicity: only common, store-bought ingredients are used, and most of the recipes are ready in less than 45 minutes. The book also features the new Vegetarian Diet Pyramid from the American Dietetic Association. Vegetarian and More! allows those eating less meat, vegetarians, and meat lovers total satisfaction.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent, Excellent book, YUMMY recipes!.......2005-10-06
FanTAStic book - I'd recommend it to anyone, and even buy it & give it as a gift! I got it from my library several times, and ended up copying out some recipes. My family loves them, and they're nice additions to our menu. A very worthwhile book!
aims to please everyone but in the end pleases no one.......2003-11-24
This is a great concept, and appeared to be perfect for my family, which includes both vegetarians and non-vegetarians. In practice, however, I could hardly find any recipes that were appealing. Lots of convenience-food style cooking and inauthentic ethnic recipes calling for unlikely combinations of ingredients, such as a lo mein recipe made from spaghetti, peanut butter, yoghurt and soy sauce. The meat versions are mostly derived by throwing in a bit of pre-cooked meat to the finished recipe. This is not likely to satisfy anyone, really - and I could have done as much on my own without a recipe.
Surprised there wasn't a book like this sooner!.......2000-10-15
This book is absolutely perfect for my family. My family is one of those where only half the members don't eat meat. When I come home from work, sometimes I just can't get myself psyched up to cook one meal, let alone two! This book helps me cook for the whole family with minimum fuss. All of the meals are rather quick, and there aren't really any ingredients that would be hard to find in your local grocery store. You just begin cooking up one of the meals for your family and then split it into two pots or pans, just adding the meat to one. In many of the recipes, the meat isn't added until toward the end of the cooking process. The only thing this book is missing are pictures--color pictures in a cookbook are always appreciated.
Book Description
Get the bestselling guide to trading systems, now updated for the 21st century.
For more than two decades, futures traders have turned to the classic
Trading Systems and Methods for complete information about the latest, most successful indicators, programs, algorithms, and systems. Perry Kaufman, a leading futures expert highly respected for his years of experience in research and trading, has thoroughly updated this bestselling guide, adding more systems, more methods, and extensive risk analysis to keep this the most comprehensive and instructional book on trading systems today. His detailed, hands-on manual offers a complete analysis, using a systematic approach with in-depth explanations of each technique. This edition also includes a CD-ROM that contains the TradeStation EasyLanguage program, Excel spreadsheets, and Fortran programs that appear in the book.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent material in 4th edition.......2007-05-12
Similar to many traders who own Perry Kaufman's 3rd edition of New Trading Systems and Methods, I ignored the publication of the 4th edition. Well, such oversight was my loss. Even a quick perusal of the work reveals a wealth of new ideas, techniques, and concepts. Kaufman offers ample inspiration for exploring trading problems in a new light.
Kaufman's encyclopedic coverage is unique. The 3rd edition contains 700 plus dense, fast paced material. The current edition adds another 500 pages of new and revised material. Each topic is examined with care; Kaufman has an ability to focus on the key concepts and omit the fluff. His presentation assumes a sophisticated, intelligent reader with solid software development, testing, and trading skills. Sloppy readers, clumsy testers, undisciplined `traders' will complain that this is not a `trading war stories book'--such complaints are correct; this is a trading SYSTEMS and METHODS handbook.
The book binding has a problem. At 1,200 pages, the adhesive binding is falling apart. This book requires either sewn through or over-sewn type binding. Shame on John Wiley for such embarrassing production quality!
Might interest a mathematician.......2007-04-28
I've only gotten about a third to halfway thru the book as I can't see what the author's purpose is, whether laboring thru the rest would benefit me or not. It reads like a college level textbook of the mathematics behind technical analysis. Boring. In what I read, the author worked thru proof formulas to get to more elaborate indicators. In so doing, sometimes he explained what his formula's symbols meant and sometimes not. I sure don't want to go back thru the book to see if I can find an earlier description of what the symbols mean should I ever want to use one of the new formulas. Then he compared some of the new trend followers like standard deviation against olders ones like moving average and point and figure and behold none are really better than the others. When I get stranded on a tropical isle and am bored to tears, I will page thru the rest of it.
The only book I can depend on for clear system trading information........2007-01-27
After buying a large number of highly recommended trading books (including the books referred to in these reviews), this is the only book that I can depend on to clearly explain in technical detail almost any aspect of system trading that I need information on. This book is well written, comprehensive, and approaches subjects in an objective manner. It doesn't tell you how to trade, but clearly describes the different system trading strategies and indicators, their advantages and disadvantages, and practical considerations. This is a must for those developing rule based and automated trading systems.
What more could you ask for in a book???.......2006-10-02
Trading is serious business, although you wouldn't think so, considering the way many people approach it.
The fundamental truth about all types of markets is that the minority gets the money, and keeps it. Of course, there will be times where the market trends strongly in one direction (usually up), and the masses confuse a bull market for brains. But those who are serious about earning profits, and keeping them, need to develop a method or philosophy to separate their thoughts and actions to act independently from the crowd.
If there were college level courses in financial speculation, Kauffman's book would be the required text. All sorts of twists on trend following, counter trend strategies, technical indicators, statistical methods, as well as various charting techniques, are all described. I should also add, the book comes with a CD that enables you to test various methods described in the book using Excel spreadsheets. The spreadsheets are already set up, you just need to input the data.
Some reviewers say that all of the methods are "bad." I'd disagree. This book is a valuable reference, and when you understand the logic of what has come before, you can adapt it to current market conditions. There are a surprisingly large, but finite, number of ways to slice and dice market data. But there are an infinite number of ways to combine a few them into a robust trading system.
Solid technical analysis book.......2006-08-02
This book is worth the money. The author presents solid explanations on the use of technical indicators and statistical calculations of the market. He guides you step by step in order to understand the specific applications and use of technical analysis and use of mathematical calculations applied to the financial markets. The depth of research and examples is very broad and extensive, plus the examples of the actual programming code in order to create your own trading systems is very helpful. Recommended by MTA to complete the CMT course.
Customer Reviews:
Good Introductory Text.......2005-01-07
This book is a rigorous introduction on various technical analysis concepts. It does not waste the readers' time on unnecessary formalization like many college text books. Most of the information provided in the book are equally applicable to stocks, indices, etc. not just commodities as the name of the book suggests.
Topics covered - basic charting, standard indicator calculations, to concepts like trading system design and comparison. Information on each topic are rich and in detail. Some college mathematics background is needed if you would like to understand the details of the calculations and analysis.
One weakness in the book is that very little time is spent on intraday data analysis. It makes perfect sense because the original edition was written well before intraday trading (include daytrading) enters the mainstream media.
In summary, this book is very well written and is a must read for traders who are interested in learning what technical analysis is all about.
Best fundamental systems building book I've seen!.......1998-06-14
Only book that covered "Island and Continent" 3-D graphs analysis (I use TradeStation 4.0's optimization results and export the results file to Excel creating a table of profits, ROA's, Max-drawdowns, ect then graph them out in multicollored 3-d graphs). No one else (to my knowledge) has emphasized the importance of looking for stablity in parameters that are used in systems analysis. I'd never trust a system unless I saw big wide continents in both Profits and Returns on Account minimum....What good is a system unless you know that that the parameter's you're using really work...that they're not out of standard deviation and surounding param's also work! This will give the user ability to see what parameter or inputs not only make profits but where the safest and stable sets of parameters exist.Give me robust systems only please. Can't wait for his new book to come out.

Book Description
Mergers, acquisitions, and alliances continue to be almost an everyday feature of the contemporary business scene, yet at least half prove to be unsuccessful. The authors show the contribution that psychology can make to our understanding of the merger phenomena - how it affects organizational performance, and how it affects the managers and employees involved.
Mergers, Acquisitions and Strategic Alliances is intended as a guide to successful organizational marriage. Great emphasis is placed on the issue of cultural compatibility as it concerns partner selection, integration practices and venture outcomes.
The book also focuses on cross-national mergers, acquisitions and joint ventures. With the increasing economic activity within the European Union and between the unions of other countries, there is a need to know more about the corporate and national cultures in these strategic alliances. The authors have drawn upon an extensive body of research based on recent cases in a wide cross section of industries across Europe.
The book is unique in showing the actual effect mergers and acquisitions have on people, and consequently on the performance of the 'new' organization. It will be particularly relevant for decision makers - those who are involved in planning and implementing a large organizational change, and those responsible for ensuring successful integration afterwards. It would also be extremely useful for postgraduate management students, personnel executives and management consultants.
The essential guide to successful organizational marriage
Focuses on cultural compatibility, partner selection, integration practices and venture outcomes
Covers cross-national mergers

Great Capture of Recent Merger Research in Regard to HR.......2000-12-09
I found this book to be tremendously useful due to its combination of scientific research as well as illustrative case studies. Too many books focus solely on subjective measures of the human side of mergers and acquisitions while ignoring recent studies in the field. This book is the only one that I have seen that truly is helpful for consultants or scientists who want to brush up on current trends on the subject, or develop a foundation for future research and projects. This book is highly recommended for HR personnel, I/O Psychologists, executives or anyone else involved in the merger process.
Ok Book, if you are looking for the How To?.......2000-08-04
I have the view of the investor who would like to be better able to analyze announced public acquisitions and their odds of being completed. In general this book does a good job explaning basic securities laws. I am glad of reading this book. Now if any one can suggest any other book regarding mergers in deeper and with more technical information, please email me. Thanks.

Book Description
The goal of this edited volume is to take a hard, objective look at the many different aspects of taxing the hard-to-tax, as well as the many different approaches that have been employed around the world. In the developed and developing world, taxing certain kinds of activities, sectors, or individuals - the so-called "hard-to-tax" - is a challenge for governments. In the past, the practical side of this issue has received some attention, mainly from those working in the trenches of tax administration. There has also been some analytical work on such things as "presumptive" taxation, as well as some empirical work on measuring the hard-to-tax. However, the lessons from all of this work have been very unevenly disseminated, and there are clearly many unresolved issues. With the steady advance of such things as globalization, internet commerce, and tax shelters, the issues in taxing the hard-to-tax will become even more pressing.

A tribute to the legacy of Ronald Reagan.
Book Description
An architecture and design critic's search for an ideal American homethat's both beautiful and affordable
Most would be hard pressed to find an American not interested in real estate. From birth, we're conditioned to consider owning our own homes as the fulfillment of the American Dream. But consumers today are more likely than not to find themselves either priced out of the market or forced to settle for cookie-cutter conformity. Where housing is concerned, cheap and well crafted rarely exist together. Or do they?
Founding Editor in Chief of Dwell magazine and noted critic Karrie Jacobs believes that they do. The Perfect $100,000 House chronicles her coast-to-coast search for just that: a well-built, intelligently designed, reasonably priced, decent-size house with at least a little curb appeal. Throughout her journey, Jacobs meets architects and builders who are revolutionizing the way Americans think about homes, about construction techniques, and about community. From a Teletubbiesesque subdivision outside Taos, New Mexico, to nuevo-retro shotgun houses in Houston, the options available to prospective home buyers are as diverse as the terrain along Jacobs's fourteen-thousand-mile trek. And no matter where her search ends, she'll at long last be home.

Annoying travelling companion fails to share pictures.......2007-05-09
It sounds like a great concept: An architecture writer with $100,000 in the house sets out to see what she can buy for that money somewhere in America. And the first chapter, where she goes to "architecture camp" in Vermont sets us up for something promising.
But the promise isn't fulfilled because for a book like this which is as much travelogue as reporting requires that we have a guide that we enjoy spending the trip with, and Jacobs is that most obnoxious sort of New Yorker: No place is good enough because it just isn't New York. The other cities in America, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, are just places to get through on the way to another rural area which will be dismissed because it's just some remote area where there aren't enough hip people (or too many hip people) for it to be comfortably similar to living in Manhattan.
Worse still, in a book about architecture, there is one essential ingredient which is painfully absent. PICTURES. I'm sorry Ms Jacobs, but your prose is not sufficient to convey the feel of the homes you describe without abundant illustration to accompany them. Instead we're treated to one(!) illustration per chapter, which often isn't even the most interesting-sounding building from the chapter.
the imperfect $100K house trip.......2007-02-04
I wavered as to how many stars to give this book. I enjoyed the story of the author's attempt to find or create her dream home. But I think many people are going to buy this book in the hopes finding practical advice for their own search and in that respect it falls down.
I wanted to know more about the homes themselves and as good a job as the author does describing them, I wanted pictures and, even more for a book so much about architecture, plans and elevations.
I wonder whether the $100K price tag has become too low a target 3 years later. Perhaps the most telling thing is that by the end of the book the author has not found a house that works for her.
An answer for that perhaps would have been instead to focus more on the story of the homeowners who lived in the homes she passed on and why those homes were the perfect ones for them.
Have I written 300 pages yet?.......2007-01-12
The book is rather like a long magazine article. You get the idea and the attitude early on, and nothing changes. She's pithy and terse but the situations become redundant, even for a design nut like myself. I didn't miss photographs, allowing Gary Panter's breezy illustrations to stoke my imagination.
Reading the jacket tells you where she lives now, so the ending is no surprise. But it probably wouldn't have been anyway. I have the strong suspicion Ms. Jacobs is really looking for the right woman to settle down with.
For a more involving and satisfying tale, try Kate Whouley's "Cottage for Sale, Must be Moved." I'd call it a minor modern classic.
Disappointing, I was hoping for a great deal more...........2006-12-04
I suppose I was expecting a journey along the lines of Tracey Kidder's House, something personal and organic.
I found this book frustrating for two basic reasons:
1. The lack of photographs, especially of the specific houses discussed was frustrating. Akin to discussing the merits of a painting, without a picture of it! I don't know if this oversight was the fault of a cheap publisher's budget, or the author's choice, but the book suffers as a result.
2. The author's voice: seemed bitter or jaded or tired of her journey about two-third's before the road trip was done. Needless to say, it seems that she never found a house that she could actually commit to.
As a result of the above, the reader leaves the book neither caring about the author's quest or any closer to discovering where to find the perfect $100,000 house.
Perhaps the only thing I got from this book was a fleeting desire to subscribe to Dwell magazine.
Not at all as advertised!.......2006-11-10
The book was well written however, the content was underwhelming. Sort of a record of the ramblings in the mind of an immature female that thought she knew what she wanted yet could not quite ever commit to the resolution.
My exact feeling upon my completion of the book was "What a waste of my time!"

Customer Reviews:
Fun to read, more fun to drive.......2000-04-23
An off-highway travel guide divided into four regional parts. Each part, and each of the 74 trips, has a sketch map. The best part is, the author used his own illustrations instead of photos. Very enjoyable to read even if you don't venture off the interstate--and more enjoyable if you visit these Backroads of Washington.
Book Description
An entertaining, mind-twisting roller-coaster of a ride through math, physics, chemistry and biology that makes learning fun for the whole family. Big Numbers is a brilliant and imaginative book which paints a comparative scale of phenomena in our world, from the infinately vast to the infinitesmally small.

This book had some great insights and reflections on some good trips, this guy talked me into going on one of these drives. I stopped rading after that. Mine is in pristine condition.
