        Book Description

Sustainable poverty reduction and equitable economic development depend on the solid foundation of the rule of law. These reforms are underpinned by legal reform, whether it be to increase efficiency in business transactions, benefit from globalization policies, improve the way governments deliver essential services, or facilitate access to a more efficient and effective justice system. Internationally, rules and frameworks of cooperation are required in order to confront new global threats, such as communicable diseases, attacks on the environmental commons, destabilizing capital movements, and money laundering.

The World Bank Legal Review, the first in a new annual series, offers a combination of legal scholarship, lessons from experience, legal developments, and recent reports on the many ways in which the application of law and the improvement of justice systems promote poverty reduction, economic development, and the rule of law. This book, produced by the Legal Vice Presidency of the World Bank, is a publication for policymakers and their legal advisers, attorneys and other professionals involved in the area of international development.

          Book Description

"Failure" is one of the most dreaded words in the English language. The very idea of failing is enough to stop most people in their tracks. It can cause the majority to simply pack up, turn around and retreat without even trying. Yet it is through seeming failure that most of life's greatest successes are achieved. The Power of Failure is designed to provide simple yet profound ways to turn what appear to be failures into successes. It contains practical prescriptions for successfully meeting some of life's most common setbacks. The lessons of this book can help us all find the opportunities that are just waiting to be discovered in the challenges we face every day. This book is about failure, but failure in a whole new light. It is about how to Fail To Succeed.

5 out of 5 stars A great addition to Charles C. Manz's other leadership books.......2002-11-28

Dr. Manz has provided academics and practitioners over the years with great books on leadership. In fact, for the last five years I have used his "Mastering Self Leadership" (co-authored with Christopher Neck) in my classes with great success. Students enjoy the straightforward writing style and messages in the book, and I appreciate the content because I know it is based on solid research that Dr. Manz has done over the years. Self-leadership is about influencing yourself to become the best you can be by utilizing your talents, handling obstacles, and completing hard-to-do tasks that others tend to avoid.

However, in "The Power of Failure," Dr. Manz provides a much needed element missing from his previous books, and that is that sometimes as we take on challenges we will fail. Hard work and focus do not guarantee success in every endeavor. Yet, as Dr. Manz illustrates, the failure can actually be a learning experience and a step toward a future success. He provides both personal stories and examples from historic figures to show us how failure has happened to everyone who has become a success. Much like self leadership, the difference between achievers and non-achievers is how they view and handle the dilemma. Many who believe that successful people have had advantages over others are unaware that high achievers may have failed spectacularly too in their life at different times. However, history reports the achievements, not the failures. Dr. Manz teaches us that everyone has low points in their life at some time. It is how we handle that that determines our future.

I am strongly considering adopting this book for my entrepreneurship course next year. Many entrepreneurs experience business failure before they get it right, but the hard times toughen their business acumen and they learn from it. Since many of my students have taken my other courses, I am sure they will be happy to see another one of Dr. Manz's books on my syllabus. Additionally, the book will provide them with wisdom as they enter the stressful years of their early career lives. "The Power of Failure" would be a great book for business students, soon-to-be graduates, and friends or family members who are undergoing a trying time in their lives.

On another note, I read the book during a cross country flight. It reads fairly quickly because it is written with Dr. Manz's straightforward style and interesting storytelling. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Failure as normal part of path to success.......2002-11-15

Our society teaches us to fear failure. It teaches us that if a project or activity fails then we are a failure. This is a real problem because the only way we don't fail is if we don't try. Moving forward means that failure will happen at times. Instead of teaching that failure is personal in nature we need to redefine failure as part of the learning process. Failure has a purpose. Failure can be used to grow as a person or to redefine and improve a project or plan.

"The Power of Failure: 27 Ways to Turn Life's Setbacks into Success" provides a framework for redefining failure and using it to get ahead and improve your life. Failure can be a devastating factor that completely stops a person in their tracks or it can be the tool that they use to become successful. The choice is yours. A highly recommended read.

5 out of 5 stars Directly applicable to both business and private life.......2002-08-11

The Power Of Failure: 27 Ways To Turn Life's Setbacks Into Success by Charles C. Manz (Charles and Janet Nirenberg Professor of Business Leadership, Isenberg School of Management, University of Massachusetts) is a highly practical, "user friendly" guide to learning from one's mistakes and using what one has learned to earn success. Means of coping with disappointments, the importance of investing for success, anecdotes, advice, and a great deal more make The Power Of Failure an accessible, effective, highly recommended self-help guide which is directly applicable to both business and private life.

4 out of 5 stars Stop spinning your wheels.......2002-07-27

Strongly recommend this book for anyone who feels he/she is constantly "spinning their wheels" and never getting out of life's occasional "mud pit".
Most all of the chapters provide real-life examples of people (both famous and maybe not so famous) who've taken a disappointing situation or life obstacle and instead of playing the victim, have become the victor.
The introduction contains excellent redefinitions of failure and success.
This is a book I'll keep to reread when faced with another one of life's wheel-spinning challenges.

I was so tired of freezing and canning all my garden products and was frightened about my eletricity and gas bills. So this book comes up with the solution how to spare all the energy costs and the hours of work for preparing the food for freezing and canning.: root cellaring.
The book is a wonderful ressource not only on the topic but also in gardening.
For me it is a "must-have" and I wish I had it got 25 years ago....

No matter what your location or how much space you have, the Bubels are likely to have a root cellar option that will work for you. I've got the first edition, but I'm sure the second edition is just as good if not better. Detailed explanations of how to store vegetables and fruits without electricity with specific temperature and humidity recommendations for each variety. Many different cold storage designs. Good photos and diagrams. Well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Great book with rare insight.......2006-04-20

The chapter on level 2 alone is worth the price of the book. Yes the markets have changed and will continue to change, but you can always apply the general principles. Example: accumulation is accumulation regardless of what the market conditions are. Chris points out how to spot accumulation on level 2 and T&S, and if you grasp the idea, you should be able to spot them in any market with the tools available.

4 out of 5 stars Very useful, if somewhat out of date..........2002-02-17

There is much useful material, along with a thoughtful approach to creating a daytrading discipline, in this book. I don't fully agree with (and wouldn't expect to) all of Lewis' statements, and, as you might expect, given the changes in the trading environment over the last couple of years, many of his methods and observations are arguably already out of date, but others still apply, and his overall philosophy, perspective, and attitude are probably more important, in my opinion, than the particulars of his personal approach as practiced in and around late 2000. The text includes numerous clear, concrete, and detailed examples, though you may have to look past an L2 screen with a stack of QCOM buyers at 343 13/16 (I just never get over mania-market prices) to receive the message.

              1 out of 5 stars These strategies don't work.......2001-05-24

I lost money using these strategies. Buy Steve Nison book if you want a good book on TA. This one just doesn't measure up.

4 out of 5 stars All in all, a rather decent book.......2000-11-16

The good points: first, the book's emphasis is on trading the open, offering a straight forward strategy for playing momentum type gaps. Second, the book has a thorough review of TA basics filtered by practical and experienced advice. Third, there were several odds and ends (like NASDAQ having two data feeds, do the S&P Futures really say anything, etc) that were indeed helpful.

The not so good points: while, its all there, you have to really read the text carefully to extract what you need - meaning it could have been better organized for flow in some chapters. Second, a week in the life "Trading Week" would have been more satisfying if it had been two weeks long and not one (the author might disagree).

All in all, a rather decent book that I value for its level-headed, lets stick to the basics, here's what really works kind of thinking.

Wow, enough good things just can't be said about this work!

Clason's brilliant guidance takes the form of a few simple, accessible, yet staggeringly powerful principles illustrated multiple times, in different contexts and angles, throughout the book. Absolutely perfect for the average person, never far away from money trouble and always acting foolish with money; finance gurus might be disappointed by the nature of the advice but are bound to enjoy the archaic interpretations.

Excellent story-telling makes every principle strong and memorable, and the ancient-world setting makes truly understanding these lessons, and seeing them in example as well as in our own lives, a fun delight that leaves a firm impact.

Not only is the book amazing, but this particular audio production is actually the very best I've ever heard. Dramatized voices, performance, background and foley sounds, and especially theme music were superb. The musical accompaniment (?) to the slave's struggle to survive the desert was easily the best music, and scene, I've ever heard in a recorded book!

I had the great blessing of absorbing this knowledge at the age of twenty; within weeks I've grown many times wiser. The only possible complaint in this work is a pagan theme and the author's own admiration of Babylon, but these do nothing to hinder the message or benefits of the work.

Even the cover art is cool. What a winner!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Financial Advice You Could Ever Get!!!!.......1999-04-04

This is the only time that I've been excited about a financial book or in this case audio tape program. It is full of fun ancient stories that are as relevant today as they were 5,000 years ago. If you read no other book on money and finances read or listen to this one.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, clear and pleasurable book on a complex topic.......1999-07-06

This is by far the best book on Hong Kong taxation I have ever come across. It is presented in a clear and readable format suitable for study and as a professional reference. As a tax professional, and having followed this book since 1994-95 to the present 1998-99, I have found Hong Kong Taxation: Law and Practice to be much like a fine wine, improves with age. The revised chapters now have unsurpassed clarity in explaining the complex issues such as source of profits and the effects of changing legislation and case law on Hong Kong Taxation. David Smith, the current bearer of the torch, has applied his clever writing style to the book and annually updated the book to include the latest changes in case law and legislation as well as recently adding two new chapters on Stamp Duty and Estate Duty to make this a comprehensive reference on all Hong Kong tax ideal for both the tax professional and student. What keeps me coming back to Hong Kong Taxation: Law and Practice year after year is that it is updated annually, Smith and to a lesser extent now, Flux, have a clear writing style aimed at the tax professional (cases are described in just enough detail for the reader to understand, but not so much that the point is lost - emphasis on quality not quantity), changes from year to year are clearly highlighted, and new concepts/changes in legislation are explained clearly and with detailed examples. Lastly, what makes this book very credible is David Smith is an active and prominent member of the Hong Kong tax community respected by his peers and colleagues for his keen insights into all aspects of tax. Hong Kong Taxation: Law and Practice and the Davids actually make tax a pleasurable read!

The best part is that this book is updated by KPMG Peat Marwick annually to incorporate the latest changes in Hong Kong legislation, even after Mr. Flux's retirement. It is a useful guide for novices as well as professionals. I have been using it as a reference manual for 12 years.
