The current debate over privacy presents some of the most complex policy-making challenges we have seen in some time. While data on consumers have long been used for marketing purposes, the Internet has substantially increased the flow of personal information. This has produced great benefits, but it also has raised concerns on the part of individuals about what information is being collected, how it is being used and who has access to it. These concerns, in turn, have led to calls for new government regulation. This study focuses on the market for personal information used for advertising and marketing purposes, which is the market affected by most of the regulatory and legislative proposals now under consideration. Unfortunately, there has been little careful analysis of these proposals and their likely consequences. This book attempts to fill this gap by addressing the following basic questions: Are there `failures' in the market for personal information? If market failures exist, how do they adversely affect consumers? Can such failures be remedied by government regulation? Would the benefits of government regulation exceed the costs? £/LIST£ The authors find that the commercial market for information appears to be working well and is responding to consumers' privacy concerns. They conclude that regulation imposed on a medium like the Internet that is changing so rapidly would have unpredictable and costly consequences. This study is a product of The Progress & Freedom Foundation's project on Regulating Personal Information: Balancing Benefits and Costs. The Progress & Freedom Foundation studies the impact of the digital revolution and its implications for public policy. It conducts research in fields such as electronic commerce, telecommunications and the impact of the Internet on government, society and economic growth. It also studies issues such as the need to reform government regulation, especially in technology-intensive fields such as medical innovation, energy and environmental regulation.

Simple, logical advice to overcome a popular problem.......2004-12-29

Succinct motivational business books have blossomed ever since the success of "Who Moved My Cheese?" This one addresses a topic we're all familiar with and may need to be reminded of every so often: accountability. While the problem and its remedies aren't new, they're presented in a fresh package here.

As has become the standard preamble for this genre, this book begins with a parable. A worker who has encountered a problem wants desperately to find a solution. But everyone he asks has an answer involving THEY. THEY make the rules. THEY need to do something. The worker tries to track down this elusive THEY, moving through the administrative levels of the business and to the board, the labor union, the finance department, and human resources. He finally comes to a realization while talking with other workers in the company bathroom and looking in the mirror. What if we use the words ME and WE instead of THEY? Doesn't that simple approach change everything?

The second half of the book addresses the process of putting the ME / WE concept into practice. Quizzes measure levels of accountability and personal responsibility. Quotes from successful people inspire us. A standard method is introduced for approaching problems, assessing needs, and setting goals. An added emphasis is that if you want to make change, you must realize that you can change only yourself. Then you can hope that your own behavior influences others. The chronically-negative folks and professional victims should be left alone to either stew in their own juices or to join the crowd when the mood strikes them. The goal here is to move from Whiner to Winner and from Victim to Victor. The book makes the transition seem fairly easy. Using it in real-life situations will be more challenging. While this book isn't a cure-all for this organizational ailment, it will at least get workers thinking.

"Who Are 'They' Anyway?" is obviously a promotional tool for the two authors. The book concludes with advertisements for supplemental materials and personal lectures or consultations. But the message is still a worthy one to consider. Read this book this afternoon, and a red flag will wave before your nose the next time a co-worker complains about a decision that THEY made. Perhaps you'll be bold enough to initiate the ME / WE practice at that very moment.

perfect for everyone, i lived in the yucatan and find this book perfect for when i cook in the states because it gives alternatives to the ingredients that i can only get in the yucatan. easy instructions and recipes while being incredibly authentic.

You Can Really Feel With Her.......2007-03-06

Wow! This book got me inside Lisa's heart and soul, and showed me what it's like to be an abused woman. Now I understand what they go through. It's a real eye-opener and a very readable book, just like reading somebody's diary. I recommend it highly!

Only use if you want to know what the woman feels like........2003-01-26

This is the story of a capable intelligent woman staying in the abuse. Not until her child is severly abused does she find a way involve the police.

The book did not help me understand why women stay it just made me angry. I am angry that she stayed and in the end never tells other women how to get out where to get help. I was also angry that in her case as in others that I am closer to therapists did not help just enabled the abuser with more and better excuses to abuse and means to tear down the woman.

If you are looking for a way to help a friend or family member in the situation this is not the book for you. It has nothing that tells you how to help. I read the book in hopes that I would be able to give it to a sister to inspire her to find a way out. I read it first and I am glad I did. What it showed is that the situation could be worse that abuse should be tolerated. Additionally the moral of the story is that a woman can not, should not, is incapable of getting away.

If you are wanting to know what it feels like to be the woman in that situation, then this is the book, for anything else find something else.

And how does Ms. Kelley like this?.......2000-06-27

Not much, I bet.

I enjoyed this biography more than most ("Legend" nearly made me suicidal, though) since it gives the hard and lowdown about one of the biggest trashers of modern times. It chronicles the life and career of Kitty Kelley-and a lot of things you'd expect to see in her half-fictional biographies.

Aside from chronicling her life, it also analyzes the various lies and half-truths that Kelley put in her biographies. Among the myths that were blown apart were suggestions about Nancy Reagan being pregnant out of wedlock and Frank Sinatra dumping a girlfriend.

I honestly don't know if the statements about her sex life and college robberies (yes, you read right-a bustier among other things) were true. But if she could cold-bloodedly make up such degrading statements about people she doesn't even know, then I imagine she could probably steal and half-kill her lover.

The one thing that could have made this much better was if there had been more speculation on why Kelley chose to trash people the way she did. Based on her past life? On her career? Did she get some vicarious kicks out of it? Was she jealous?

If you have ever been enraged by a KK biography, this book is a must-read.

Trashes the Trasher.......2000-06-20

Kitty Kelley must have never heard the old aphorism, "don't dish it out, if you can't take it" because this unauthorized biography caused her considerable well publicized consternation. Her response is certainly understandable because the referenced source materials certainly surpass the innuendo and outright sophistry of her books, and the charges against her are severe. From shoplifting to rampant dishonesty (that allegation should cause little surprise among those familiar with her work), to uninhibited sexual hi-jinks, Carpozi throws it all at Kelley, and it certainly is enjoyable watching him score so many bull's eyes. His most striking charge is the strong possibility that Kelley gave birth to an illegitimate child in her much younger days. While that may never be proven, there is no denying that she has given birth to a huge body of illegitimate literature that has disgraced her far more than it could ever hurt her intended targets.

The hour of judgement for Kitty has come!.......1999-12-21

At last, someone finally gave Kelley what she so richly deserves--a book revealing the inspiration behind the inaccurate foolishness of her books. She is taking out all of her anger at being the child of an alcoholic out on the rest of the world. She has no respect for people who, unlike herself, actually achieved something worthwhile in life. She sleeps around and behaves like trash in order to print trash. She takes delight in ruining the reputations of decent people, magnifies their faults (which we all have), and is altogether a ditzy, insufferable twit! Now she gets a taste of her own medicine. It's about time!

Thumps up!.......2005-07-25

This wonderful hitchhiking odyssey is all thumps up (or outstretched as the young boy would tell us). What a romp across 1960 America. It's the kind of book I'd love to see as a movie. Sure lends itself to the big screen because I have read few more visual stories. This is fun all the way to California and back! What a roll of the camera . . . and sentence.

Can't be true.......2004-12-27

I would normally give this book 5 stars, except I have a strong sense that this book is a fictional fraud.

It's the story of an 11 year old boy who hitchikes the country with his alcoholic, dead-beat father in search of a better life in California. Of course, California is no better than any other place they've been and they take buses back to Albany where his mother lives with his two sisters, only to ***spoiler*** go back out on the road again with his father at the end of the book.

The book is well written and engaging, but only if the book is true, which I doubt. The book often states what a good storyteller the father is and how good said father is at making up things to get what he wants out of people. The author continually expresses his desire to be on the radio or in movies, not to mention how often he embellishes stories, so I wouldn't be surprised if the book was just one big lie.

From the outset, the author states how he went 2 entire months without a bowel movement, which I don't even know is medically possible, much less didn't land him in the hospital. Plus he recounts in great detail names, places, and events that happened 40 years ago. And somehow, all these events involve sexual predators, thieves, and other ne'er-do-well's. Never any average people. Nah, I don't think the book is true.

But if it is true, it's really well done.

A Triumph of Memory, a Tempest of Imagination.......2003-12-07

Smiling ghosts of Mark Twain and Jack Kerouac hover over many pages of Michael Keith's "The Next Better Place." This captivating book places Keith squarely in the same row with America's finest writers of the road adventure story. Which is to say that "The Next Better Place" is so much more than a memoir-cum-novel of a precocious son traversing America's great expanses with an ageing picaro of a father. Keith knows when to embroider his book's perfectly intoned dialogue, tremulous details, and charming teenage bravado with both lyrical pathos and hints at the perverse. The greatest American road novel, Vladimir Nabokov's "Lolita," also came to mind as I devoured Keith's book, and I can only hope that Keith will soon reward his readers with another one.

the next better place.......2003-04-21

I ENJOYED THIS BOOK VERY MUCH,HOWEVER I'M A LITTLE CONFUSED ABOUT MR. KEITH'S DATES. HE SAYS THESE EVENTS TOOK PLACE IN 1959, WHEN HE WAS 11 YEARS OLD. HOWEVER ON THE "AUTHORS NOTE" PAGE IT GIVES HIS YEAR OF BIRTH AS 1945, WHICH WOULD HAVE MADE HIM 14 YEARS OLD AT THE TIME OF THESE EVENTS. ALSO HE MENTIONS SEVERAL TIMES THE SONG FROM THE MOVIE "THE MAGNIFICANT 7". HOWEVER THAT MOVIE WASNT RELEASED TILL THE EARLY 1960'S. NO BIG DEAL. JUST BAD PROOF READING BY THE PUBLISHERS.

Nostalgic review of a traveling boyhood.......2002-10-12

This delightfully written novelized memoir will hold your interest throughout. Now a professor of electronic media at Boston College, Keith takes us back to his boyhood and the always-on-the-road travels he shared with his well-meaning but ill-fated father who was always in quest of "the next better place" to find acceptance if not a viable livelihood.

Along the way we meet a perfectly amazing cornucopia of characters and places and situations all of which were more typical of a 1950's America before Interstate highways made everything the same. Keith's descriptions and characterizations are both visual and compelling showing that, though he was only briefly in formal schools, he surely learned a lot about life with this seemingly aimless bus and hitchhiker mode of travel.

Keith's tale combines a sometimes wistful tone with the insight that comes early when you are forced on your own resources for lack of much parental guidance. He has done well in recreating his thoughts and ideas in the context of a twelve-year-old amidst an adult world into which he is thrust all too quickly. The writing is compelling---you want to know what place is coming next, and what people he (and we) will meet along the way.
