My husband's cholesterol is through the roof!!! So we both decided we wanted to try going without red meat for a while. I looked into a lot of vegetarian cookbooks but they were so off-the-wall and not very realistic for a family with 2 school age boys. It was so hard to find any recipes for "normal" easy cooking that didn't require weird or bizzare ingredients!! Thats why I love this cookbook! The recipes are simple and DELICIOUS!!! It's worth every penny! We can't wait to see how this will impact his cholesterol levels!!

I bought this book to help lose weight but when I saw it also lists the sodium, I gave it to my mother-in-law who's on a strict low sodium diet but wasn't adhering to it. The recipes we've tried were excellent and easy to prepare. I really think my Mother-in-law will find it easier to follow her diet, which is a good thing because her life depends on it.

Now I have to buy another copy for myself!

As one who has coronary heart disease, I feel qualified to comment on low-fat cooking. No Red Meat is one of my favorite and most-used cookbooks for healthy, delicious meals. The recipes use everyday, common pantry items, and you don't have to be a Julia Childs to follow the instructions. Johnny's Chicken Pot Pie has become my husband's most requested supper, and it can be made in about an hour. When my dog, Gracie, stole my book and ate the covers and the corners (not I know why it's called dog-eared) with the page numbers on them, I couldn't wait to purchase another copy. Try it, you'll love it!

A wonderful and realistic collection of everyday recipes........1998-09-18

The recipes in No Red Meat are simple to prepare for every day meals but are also suitable for entertaining. When I am searching for recipes that do not contain red meat it is convenient to have a compilation of them. Previously, I had to search through the poultry, fish and vegetarian sections of several cookbooks, which frequently contained too few choices or unappealing recipes, to find a recipe for my menu planning.

great foundation for aspiring biotech investors.......2004-08-03

This book provides the average investor with a solid foundation in their pursuit of successful biotech investing.

Most investors invest in biotech stocks based on media exposure and momentum driven markets. There is a glaring lack of any sort of structure to their research or position management. Dr. Duarte's book lays the groundwork for investors to establish a workable system of identifying and managing promising investments. By incorporating risk management techniques (technical analysis), he has provided a dose of reality to balance the inherent optimism the motivates biotech investors. This is crucial as it prevents the blow ups that destroy portfolios as well as investor confidence.

Give this one a miss.......2004-05-17

The book looks great, but it is definitely not worth reading. If you are into technical analysis, you may derive some use from the text. However, I don't see why you need a book devoted to biotech for investing on this basis.

There's a weak chapter on the science (high school level at a stretch); a discussion on investment basics which misses the mark. The markets chapter is fine, but the review of major drug companies is weak. I just found the analysis of the biotech industry to be too weak. There's simply too little analysis and too much opinion.

I have no idea why there's a discussion on mutual funds. Unless the particular vehicle is a sector fund, the manager won't start investing in biotech until the price has appreciated. By then, it's too late.

The MD and CNBC credentials lead me to believe that this book would provide some dynamic insight or a systematic way for cutting through they hype. Sadly, it did neither.

Synthetic Simplicity.......2001-06-28

This book is not just about biotech investing. Duarte, a technical analyst as well as a physician uses biotechs as a model for approaching the market. The book has all the shortcomings other reviewers warn you of: it's painfully redundant, incomplete and simplistic. But it does offer a consistent approach to stock investing IF you supplement it with other material. It also lists some neat web sites.

Finally! A book that helps the average investor in biotech.......2001-06-16

Since I'm not interested in being a PhD this seems like the perfect book for me and more than likely for the average investor. The thing I really like about this book is that it helps me know how to make money from the coming biotech explosion.

I don't care how this stuff works nearly as much as how to build my net worth by investing. On that point, this is THE book. It has just about everything-understandable explanation of the industry, how to tell which companies are likely to be leaders, and even a reference database.

If I had a book this good at the beginning of the 'high tech' explosion I could have retired already. I would have understood enough about Oracle, Cisco, and all that lot to make even more money. I don't intend to be on the back half of the next wave. I give this book five stars. Thanks a million, $$$, to the author.

A bible for the apprentice.......2006-12-05

This small guide and text book was primarily written and also edited by Derek Downs, whom I was fortunate to work with at Thomas Meadows and Company in the early eighties.

Along with another Meadows director, George Bristow, they more or less devised the Standard Trading Conditions used by most freight forwarders at that time.

It really was the only book of its kind that contained a wide-ranging overview of the nuts and bolts of the cargo industry.

When I arrived as a young apprentice, Derek Downs was an elder of the tribe who occupied his office like a consultant in Harley Street or a head of chambers in Chancery Lane.

He oozed the wisdom of age and was kindly, inspiring and indulgent. It was hard to believe that somebody I knew personally could be behind such a well thought out and well put together book, which for many years had no equal.

I work in the state tax area, so I enjoyed the historical accounts of tax revolts. I also enjoyed hearing about the TN legislature's political moves used in trying to get a personal income tax passed. No surprise that the writing style is rather self-aggrandizing (Mr. Valentine is a talk-show radio host.)

I listen to Mr. Phil Valentine Monday through Friday, here in middle Tennessee. I and my family were at these Capitol Tax Revolt Rallies in Nashville. I urge you to grab the opportunity to become inspired toward "rebellion against an overbearing, bloated, arrogant and abusive government" by reading this book. Mr. Valentine is eloquent and, yet, easy to follow.

I started reading this book and couldn't put it down! I ended up finishing it one sitting. It's a true story of a woman battling with bipolar disorder. Whether you have this disorder or not, it really helps you understand it better, just by reading her experiences. Some parts made me laugh and some parts made me cry. I recommend it!
