              Book Description

This is an in-depth practical guide for attorneys involved in the sale or purchase of goods in the international market. The UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG), the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC), and the UNIDROIT Principle of International Commercial Law
(PIC) were designed to implement uniformity in the law of sales and reflect modern commercial practice, yet there are substantial differences among them. Contracts for the Sale of Goods delivers a detailed analysis and comparison of the substantive law for the sale of goods in domestic and
international transactions under the three regimes.

Contracts for the Sale of Goods provides you with all relevant materials in one source, with the text following the structure of the Convention for clarity and convenience Access the Incoterms 2000, the complete texts of Article Two and the PIC, and a list of parties to the CISG. Benefit from the
invaluable concordance index that enables readers to cross-reference the relevant provisions of the CISG to the PIC and UCC.

5 out of 5 stars Good Concise Overview of Sales Law.......2002-01-02

This rather small volume presents a good overview of UCC sales law and is compact but not shallow. I was also impressed with its treatment of the CISG, which is often wrongly overlooked or barely treated in american books on commercial law, especially in smaller books such as this one. It discusses the CISG and explains the relevance of its provisions in comparison to Art. 2 UCC for the american lawyer/law student. As with its discussion of the UCC provisions, the interspersed treatment of the CISG is clear and compact. The authors distinguish some of the differences between the CISG and UCC, point out problem questions and uncertanties, and generally do a good job in succinctly explaining the essentials and more (I found some interesting arguments and perspectives) for both bodies of law.

                    Product Description

This casebook provides detailed information on major U.S. commercial statutes and important international conventions that provide uniform law for the international sale of goods. The casebook provides the tools for fast, easy, on-point research. It includes selected cases designed to illustrate the development of a body of law on a particular subject. Text and explanatory materials designed for law study accompany the cases. This edition, like its predecessors, stresses two aspects of sales and sale law: sellers' fundamental obligations regarding the quality of and title to the goods, and the manifold problems that arise in connection with performance of sales transactions by both parties. These are the subjects that give rise to most of the difficulties that lead to litigation today. The principal cases were carefully selected for their commercial significance.

From the supplier: The Tax Court ruled in Bowater Inc that a US parent corporation and its domestic international sales corporation allocating their interest deductions under the safe harbor transfer pricing method may net interest income and income expense. The short-term reinvestment of borrowed funds to minimize carrying costs was one rationale given by the court. Taxpayers wanting the take advantage of this ruling should note that the regulations in effect in this case spoke of using the aggregate of deductions to allocate, while current regulations allocate the gross amount.

                      Book Description

For centuries, business, political, and military leaders throughout Asia have had a secret weapon for success -- the philosophies and strategies found in an ancient game called Go.

Now, Troy Anderson, an entrepreneur, knowledge management expert, Fortune 500 management consultant, and one of only five Americans to train at the Japanese Professional Go Academy, brings these philosophies and strategies to the West.

Leaders and intellects such as Mao Tse-tung, Bill Gates, and John Nash (the game was featured in the movie A Beautiful Mind) as well as many CEOs and political leaders throughout Asia are among the 27 million people who have played this simple two-person board game known as the "game of geniuses."

In this unique book, Troy Anderson shares the essential elements of strategy and competition that define the game of Go and shows how these principles can be applied wherever strategy is called for:

Go provides experience and understanding regarding basic strategic problems that no other art, science, or field, other than war, can readily claim. In addition to an enriching account of how the game of Go has influenced Anderson's life, the valuable lessons imparted here add up to a powerful prescription for success -- whether you are seeking professional achievement, better competitive understanding, stronger personal relationships, or simply a more rewarding life.

5 out of 5 stars Provides foundation lessons for both the game & business.......2005-02-05

Far older than chess, the Asian game of Go is played by millions of all ages, all around the world, leading to company tournaments, competition for millions in prize money, and interest: so why should CEOs and non-players care? Because many of the strategies of Go translate well into corporate strategies, creating important parallels between the major rules and mindset of Go and real-life business success. From maximizing limited time and resources to increasing focus and flexibility alike, The Way of Go : 8 Ancient Strategy Secrets for Success in Business and Life provides many important foundation lessons for both the game and business.

                      5 out of 5 stars Good book!.......2004-08-06

Very good book by Mr. Anderson. I am 6-dan Go player and businessman in Japan. His Go and business are the real thing. But the English is very difficult. I spend days translating with a dictionary. Please make a Japanese version.

What I like best is the story of my business. He never knows my business, but his story captures my business exactly. He is like a ghost visiting. He knows the inside challenge and issue without ever being there. Surprising!

Other review is not true. Mr. Anderson does not say Go comes from Japan. He says it comes from China.

                      3 out of 5 stars A big Mistake!.......2004-08-03

The author's view is that the game of Go is an ancient Japanese game. But we all know this game came from Ancient China and then Japanese brought into their country. So,the game of Go is an ancient Chinese game, not ancient Japanese one.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond the 'bag of tricks' ..........2004-08-03

As Anderson says in a section of the book called, "So What," the game of Go and the application of the 'way' in business is about seeking and improving more than it's about applying some new set of discoveries or rules to get a certain result.

What I like about this book is that the connections Anderson makes between strategic themes in GO and strategic themes in business are thought provoking - not forumulas for the lastest biz shtick (workshops to follow).

I found the discussion of shifts in strategy at different phases - beginning, middle game and end game - particularly stimulating.

This is a great book to give to a colleague or client to start some converstations worth having.

There are many ideas and examples in this book that i found to be very useful to my trading.

To be honest, I borrowed this book from a public library because the bad experience from its precedessor The Innergame of Trading had deterred me from wasting my hard earned money on this.

For detailed review please see my review of the Innergame of Trading because the two books are so similar, of very low value and repeating the same basic trading psychology stuff like a successful trader got to have discipline, focus, bravery to cut loss short and let profit ride blah blah blah, except that the interview part in Outer is about 100 page longer than that in Inner. (160 vs 60) However, the quality of the interview content is even lower.

I really cannot agree what the authors claimed on the book cover that their book helped the readers to model the trading strategies of Today's Market Wizards. How? Just by going through the lines of the interview. I am afraid that's more diffcult than achieving a 6 month winning streak.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent! A must for the serious trader's library!.......1999-09-10

This book is one of the best that I have read on trading. Its a definite keeper. I have read it several times. The book really helped me overcome some serioius problems in my trading -- and I am an experienced trader. The book gave me a fresh, "ah-ha" perspective to trading. Afterwards, my approach to trading improved dramatically.

While some may think the title is misleading, it really isn't. Once you complete the book, you will be able to better appreciate the circle of trading life the authors take the reader on. The middle section, on "modelling excellence" is a little tedious. But in retrospect, I found this section to be really quite valuable, especially the NLP tools. (In recent years, NLP has been credited for improving peak performers, in many highly competitive areas, e.g., sports, sales, management & military training).

If you find the beginnng a bit slow, then I would recommend you begin by reading the last 2 sections first and then proceed to the beginning and read the book all the way through to the end.

Again, I rate this book a strong buy, if not a market outperform!

4 out of 5 stars This is not a book on strategy.......1999-08-15

I know that Howard Abell is a very capable trader. However, you do not need to purchase all of his books due to the great deal of redundancy present in his writings. The title of this book is misleading. If you are looking for specific strategies or new ideas forget about it. I am not saying one needs to have a new idea in order to make money in the markets; what I am saying merely is that this book is more a pyschological treatise on the aspects of trading than one on methodologies. Out of all of his books this is the only title I can recommend. The Inner Game of trading is also good. But thats about all you need.

I hold that every man should, like Cuvier, the French naturalist, thoroughly know his business. So proficient was he in the study of natural history, that you might bring to him the bone, or even a section of a bone of an animal which he had never seen described, and, reasoning from analogy, he would be able to draw a picture of the object from which the bone had been taken. On one occasion his students attempted to deceive him. They rolled one of their number in a cow skin and put him under the professor's table as a new specimen. When the philosopher came into the room, some of the students asked him what animal it was. Suddenly the animal said "I am the devil and I am going to eat you."

                        5 out of 5 stars 20 Rules To Success.......2006-07-07

This is a book that every young man and young lady should read - so that they ensure their safe passage along the road to success as opposed to the road to destruction.

Barnum gives 20 "rules" that a person must abide by in order to be successful. Given that Barnum was one of the wealthiest men in America during his day, given that Barnum was received by Kings and Queens the world over, his "rules" are worthy of attention.

If you are already striving along the path to success, you will likely find the "rule" that you have been breaking to this point, that has been holding you back. When you read this book, you'll see it, and your success will be accelerated greatly.

By the way, all 20 of these "rules" are fully applicable to today's world and environment. There is absolutely nothing that is "dated" about this book.

As an aside, this book was actually a speech that Barnum gave on the "speakers circuit" of his day. As such, it provides a great model from which a person can construct a speech of their own. You'll see how Barnum gets "personal", uses jokes, quotes, and stories to bring his speech to life and make it interesting.

Lastly, in the realm of success books, there isn't an easier book to read anywhere since this book is a mere 32 pages long.

5 out of 5 stars Humorous yet practical business wisdom........2005-12-20

Phineas Taylor Barnum (July 5, 1810 - April 7, 1891), American showman who is best remembered for his entertaining hoaxes and for founding the circus that eventually became Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus.

In Brooklyn, New York in 1871, he established "P.T. Barnum's Grand Traveling Museum, Menagerie, Caravan, and Circus", a traveling amalgamation of circus, menagerie and museum of "freaks", which by 1872 was billing itself as "The Greatest Show on Earth".

There's a sucker born every minute" is a phrase often credited to P.T. Barnum. However, when Barnum's biographer tried to track down when Barnum had uttered this phrase, all of Barnum's friends and acquaintances told him it was out of character. Barnum's credo was more along the lines of "there's a customer born every minute" -- he wanted to find ways to draw new customers in all the time because competition was fierce and people bored easily

Barnum wrote several books, including The Humbugs of the World (1865), Struggles and Triumphs (1869), and his Autobiography (first in 1854, and later editions including 1869).

The Art of Money Getting is really the story of how to run a sales organization by understanding the mind and tastes of your primary customer base.

Barnum is a treat to read and is never boring! I highly recommend his books.

I am curious why Mr. Lerma is so adamant against Mr. Hubbard's works and is using Amazon.com as a sounding board for his bigoted views. Please, be quiet. PT Barnum was an excellent showman and his book reflects that well. But to compare him to Mr. Hubbard's administrative technology is silly. They are two different views handling two different things: business growth and affluence of Mr. Hubbard versus the artistic rendition and popularity of the circus. Thanks.

This is a brand new REPRINT of this Classic. The Greatest Showman in the history of the universe reveals his secrets for accumulating vast sums of wealth so that anyone can follow his program and become rich. One of the lost classics! Discover the belief systems regarding wealth creation, charity, health, poverty, and energy from a true creative genius! I don't know about you, but I had always thought of Barnum as a ringmaster and entertainer... I didn't take him very seriously. I was very skeptical about what he could offer in terms of advice on creating wealth and a profitable business. It was these low expectations that left me floored by his book on business, "The Art of Money Getting." P.T. Barnum was an intelligent, shrewd businessman whose fortune made in the circus was due far more to keen business strategy than he gets credit for. Don't make the same mistake I did and put off reading this book because of some preconceived notion. This volume is now one of my most treasured books... Book Description

In this tightly researched and incendiary book, "communications rottweiler" Sharon Beder exposes how our community values have been sacrificed by economic and political power brokers--today’s free market missionaries--on the altar of free market economics. Beder shows how throughout the twentieth century business associations and coalitions coordinated mass propaganda campaigns that combined public relations techniques developed in twentieth century America with revitalized free market ideology originating in eighteenth century Europe.

The aim was to persuade people that it was in their interests to eschew their own power as workers and citizens, and forego their democratic power to restrain and regulate business activity. These campaigns were augmented during the 1970s and ‘80s by the more sophisticated efforts of corporate funded think tanks to promote free enterprise and business-friendly policies.

Today’s free market missionaries seek to change individual and institutional values using bolder strategies such as the expansion of share ownership and the manipulation of wider public concerns. In the end the outcome is the same, the triumph of business values over community values and the manipulation of democracy. This book is an intellectual call-to-arms and the choice is clear: fight back or be converted to the ideology of the corporate free market missionaries.

                              Book Description

For more than 50 years the critics of advertising have argued that advertising is bad because it manipulates, and that it must be reined in by political controls. Not so, argues Michael Phillips. If advertising really were as successful in manipulating consumers as its critics claim, it almost certainly would be unethical and probably should be controlled--but it's not that effective. A growing body of empirical evidence now affirms that the enemies of advertising vastly overrate its power. Thus, the ethical case against manipulative advertising collapses, and with it goes much--if not all--of a statist political agenda that in Phillips's opinion is the real inspiration for the indictment. A closely reasoned, highly informative, provocative search for an understanding of advertising's efficacy and its morality, intended for professionals, academics, and informed readers alike. The argument that political controls are needed because advertising manipulates consumers is, for Phillips, a critique with a tacit assumption: that such manipulation is bad. Phillips considers that assumption from the perspective of a business ethicist, applying four ethical frameworks: utilitarianism, Kantian ethics, autonomy, and virtue ethics. If it works as the critics say, manipulative advertising probably is unethical under most or all of these criteria. But does it really manipulate? Does it stimulate the propensity to consume and dictate the brand and product choices consumers make? Basing his conclusion on considerable empirical research, Phillips argues that advertising is not an especially strong force in these respects. For that reason, most of the ethical arguments against it break down. This means, he says, that if capitalism's critics want to tout some new and better social order, they cannot use advertising's manipulativeness as an aid in doing so. On the other hand, nothing in the book necessarily blocks piecemeal attempts to regulate manipulative ads that do work and do cause some harm.

This book in my opinions has several serious flaws, which render it unhelpful to a reader keen to penetrate the issue on a scientific level. Prof. Phillips apparently is not being informed on the final verdict about the measurable effects of subliminal advertising as summarized by Pratkanis/Aronson or other social psychologists.Instead he shares some unsubstantiated rumours of the lay public. He seems to be totally ignorant of the current state of advertising research centering around the valid measurement of persuasion of advertisements (System of McCollum/Spielman, Single Source Research as analysed and presented by John Philip Jones and others). Some statements suggest, that Prof. Phillips may not be in command of some basic qualifications his topic requires. (On page 61 "studies..usually try to establish the correlation.. to determine causation between them through regression analysis..".N.B. neither correlations nor regressional analyses can determine causation) Having paid a whopping price of $ 62.95 for a clear nonperformer qualifies this work of Prof.Phillips an example of unethical manipulation in the book trade!

                                  Book Description

The term "economic globalization" has been discussed extensively in the popular press, by business executives and by policy-makers all over the world. While academic economists have made some excellent contributions to specific, technical aspects of economic globalization, there appears to be a need for economists to discuss the broader aspects of the issue in a more accessible manner. Failing this, the general debate will be informed only by the writings of non-economists.

That is the motivation for this book, which is a collection of essays on various aspects of economic globalization in general, but with specific reference to Asia.

Millard Fillmore began his presidency on July 10, 1850, immediately passing the Fugitive Slave Act, and forever damaging his political career. Abolitionists and antislavery politicians were appalled and in 1852 Fillmore was denied nomination for a second term. Four years later he campaigned again for the presidency to no avail. As the decade came to an end, Millard Fillmore was no more than an obscure name in history. Today, historians are finding new interest in Fillmore and his politics on slavery. Many believed he tolerated injustice for what he perceived was the greater good. In this comprehensive bibliography, students will find citations and sources for information on Millard Fillmore's childhood and personal life, presidency and post-presidential career. Students can easily access specific information through the table of contents and author and subject indexes.

A house that's designed to be beautiful and house an active, energetic family may seem like a tall order for an architect, but the 24 homes featured in The New Family Home meet both needs extraordinarily well. Author Jim Tolpin takes readers through all the nooks and crannies of these well-planned homes, where every inch of space is maximized to create a family living space that's attractive as well as functional.

Many of the 24 homes share several characteristics popular with today's families, such as a great room (rather than the separate living room, dining room, and kitchen configurations of the past), so that family members can feel connected even while pursuing separate activities. A home office sometimes needs to be incorporated into the home or property, as telecommuting has become both possible and popular. Separate media rooms that house the television, video games, and stereo are also frequently requested, as they allow families to preserve the living room as a distraction-free place to spend time with each other.

Adaptability is the key to making these homes work, and Tolpin explains how this element is incorporated into each house. For instance, what is currently a guest bedroom on the first floor of a home can be converted to a bedroom for a teen who wants more privacy, and then to an accessible master bedroom for the aging parents after the child moves out. This flexibility in a home makes sense considering the current trend of families who want to live in their homes longer rather than move when a house no longer fits their lifestyle. By making a house's space adaptable and multifunctional, it can fill many roles through the years, and a family can live happily in one home for many decades.

Each family in The New Family Home required a home designed to meet their specific needs and wishes, and the book documents how the family worked with the architect who translated their requests into reality. The end result is a home that fits each family's particular lifestyle now and for the foreseeable future. --Kris Law

I first checked this book out of the library, then liked it so much that I bought it. With 24 homes in it this book was a bit overwhelming at first. It took me a week to carefully read. I agree with the reviewer who said that the floor plans were disappointing. I believe that was intentional so that people don't "steal" the architect's designs. The descriptions at times were too brief and frustrating in their lack of citing sources for materials. The book, though, does what it set out to do very well; promote the concept of flowing and multi-use space as the new design for modern living. Some of the ways that these families customized their homes to their lifestyle are amazing. Everyone should have a custom home because they have a custom lifestyle and preferences. Some of these families made the trade-off of a smaller house to own a custom house that they could afford. These people and their homes are inspiring.

No no no. This book should be titled "The New Family Home for the New Economy", since practically all of the example homes described could only be afforded by folks who cashed in their dotcom stock options in March of 2000. I hate to bash a book with Jim Tolpin's name on it, but it's hard to believe that this was written by the same guy who brought us "The New Cottage Home" and "Built in Furniture". The idea is right on: homes should be able to adapt to our needs as our needs change. But there are more creative ways of achieving this goal than building a separate room for every activity (a media room, a game room, a home office, an exercise room, and on and on and on, all of which, presto-change-o, turn into something else when we decide little Billy needs a PlayStation room or mommy needs a yoga room), not to mention "Great Rooms" scaled to Jolly Greeen Giant proportions. I would recommend "More Small Houses" or "Building the Not So Big House" (as well as Tolpin's other books mentioned above) as better alternatives. Even if you really do need a bigger house, these books show how small spaces can accommodate more -- more stuff, more activity, more living -- and nothing could be more important in this day of starter-McMansions and astronomical building costs.

We are in the pre-beginning stages of building...writing down ideas, concepts, before hiring an architect to design. This book is great for its general ideas in regard to family houses. The ideas of combined kitchen/living space, children's "quarters", importance of master suites and ensuring the house will fit changing needs as children grow are great. I've taken notes on the concepts I like and would like to incorporate in our home.

We just finished building our first family home in 1999 and I wish I had this book before we began! We looked at 10,000 floorplans and now live in a craftsman style, family friendly home in the woods. What a gift is a well-designed, well-built house. But the heart of the family is not the building, but the love and commitment which grows between family members by God's grace.

For another book published in April 2000 on the family home, take a look at THE FAMILY CLOISTER: BENEDICTINE WISDOM FOR THE HOME, by David Robinson (New York: Crossroad, 2000).

While this book contains many fine crafted houses, nicely photographed. As an architect, I was very dissapointed with the 'sketchy' floor plan presentation format. Not only do the plans lack a sense of scale (It would be nice to see proposed furniture layouts that could better indicate how people relate), but kitchens and bath rooms are shown just as boxy rooms (no fixtures or casework!)

After hearing and reading a number of astonishing things about this book, I had to give it a read. What I found was not exactly what I expected. While some sources have described the Dru character as a "sinister dictator", the truth is not quite so interesting. The book itself is nowhere near as interesting.

Upon opening the book to the table of contents, one can't help but take notice of the number of chapters in this book. There are 53 chapters in just 173 pages! For those of you who don't have a math minor, that's a little over 3 pages per chapter. And for some reason, many of the chapters are explicit continuations of the chapter before. What was the point of this? Why not keep the two chapters a single chapter?
Needless to say, the writing here is atrocious. The plot is paper-thin, the characters don't develop one iota, and a romance sub-plot rears its ugly head on the last two pages of the book! How was this book published? Why was it put into print? Therein lies the intrigue.

While it was anonymously written at the time, it is today well-known that the author of this book was Colonel Edward Mandell House (he gives a little hint in the text when two characters meet at Mandell House [yeesh!]), who was the virtual co-president of the United States with Woodrow Wilson. Wilson admitted time and again that House was his "alter ego", even to the point that House was given accomodations in the White House. Why is all this important?

Philip Dru leads a revolution against the United States government. Not a bad thing in and of itself, if the reasons had been more compelling. What happens in the aftermath, however, brings shudders to students of history. Philip Dru becomes dictator of the United States, without too much reservation. He tosses out the national constitution, as well as the state constitutions, and has them rewritten. He institutes a graduated income tax (which did not exist at that time in the U.S. because it was ruled unconstitutional; however, with the "ratification" of the 16th amendment just a year or two after the publication of this book, we got one for the first time and have lived under it ever since), forces popular election of senators, nationalizes industry, and reorganizes the entire government at his whim. And Dru is definitely portrayed as the friendly protagonist. If the First Lady were to write a book calling for revolution, abolition of the constitution, and a unitary dictator, would we worry? I sure hope so.

But more worrisome is the fact that all of these thing eventually did come to pass in this country. (Sure, the constitution wasn't abolished and rewritten. However, the New Deal Supremee Court made rulings that effectively gave Congress carte-blanche to pass ANY law it felt like, even those that explicitly violate the constitution [see USA PATRIOT Act]). Was House prescient? Did he simply see the tides of popular opinion swarming over the masses? Or was he simply one of the many manipulating the domestic policy of our republic behind the scenes?

The structure and execution of this book are amateurish at best, more likened to the writing of a 10th grader than any kind of real author. Perhaps that is the point. This book was clearly aimed at the unwashed masses. Every piece of dialog in this book espouses the benefits of socialism and evil of capitalism. But this effort is so transparent that it leaves us with nothing of any literary merit, and in its place only political ramblings of a clear Fabian socialist. These ramblings, of course, entail bringing up relevant issues and injustices (female suffrage, corporate exploitation) and packaging them with solutions that involve only the addition and centralization of power in the federal government. While those who educate themselves will see this work for what it is, the many people who read this book (not today, since people don't read, but back then there were probably more than a few) would end up buying into bad solutions for exaggerated problems.

There is absolutely no reason to buy this book. The price simply doesn't justify it. A reader will gain no enjoyment from it. This book only redeems itself in its historical context: it was written by a man who pushed Woodrow Wilson to sign the Federal Reserve Act, which destroyed our economy and continues to devalue our money to this day; to lead us into World War I, despite his campaign promises not to (the Lusitania was carrying English munitions and was a valid military target); and to attempt to sacrifice the sovereignty of our nation to a world governing body in the League of Nations, which our Congress rightly rejected.

This book doesn't exactly have an original premise; a West Point graduate named Philip Dru fights for the rights of the oppressed by overthrowing the American government and implementing a benevolent dictatorship (forgive the oxymoron) so as to correct the problems of society. Such a book, while shocking at first glance, is so common that rarely would I consider it worth reading. This one, however, comes with an interesting catch... it was written by none other than Edward House.
The name might not ring a bell for most people, but Colonel Edward M. House was Woodrow Wilson's closest advisor during the first six years of his presidency, and as such this book yields amazing insights into the philosophical and personal character of a man who was one of the most powerful in the nation (and, for a brief period of time, in the world). For that alone it deserves to be read. It suffers, however, from House's own shortcomings as a writer. The prose is pedestrian, the dialogue cliched and trite, the narrative development utterly predictable (and often unrealistic), and the explanations and analysis given to major problems of the day simplistic and absurd. Indeed, it is amazing that a man of Wilson's great intellect and brilliant insights would have ever associated with, much less trusted, someone who could write something so poor. The fact that Wilson was one of our greatest presidents is a wonder, given the content of this book; aside from its historical significance, it has no redeeming value.

It turns out that this book has mysteriously disappeared over the years. From [1] p. 343 (in september 1955) :

"Meanwhile, another voice was heard among the half-dozen people in the Unites States who were asking freedom for Ezra Pound. This was Westbrook Pegler. who had long been interested in the Pound case, but had done nothing about it. He was moved to write a few columns in his defense by an odd chain of events. Pegler was trying to find a novel by Colonel Edward M. House, called "Philip Dru: Administrator" (New York, B. W. Huebsch, 1912), a strange work that outlined the entire New Deal program two decades before Roosevelt came to power. All copies of the book mysteriously had disappeared, but Pegler remembered that George Sylvester Viereck had ghostwritten a series of articles for Colonel House, which appeared in "Liberty" Magazine. Viereck had a copy of the book, which he lent to Pegler."

3 out of 5 stars Important but poorly written.......2000-05-30

_Philip Dru_ is an extremely obscure political tract written in 1911 by "Colonel" Edward Mandell House, a key advisor to Woodrow Wilson and FDR. This is what makes the book so shocking. The book advocates the violent overthrow of the constitutional government and proposes a communist/socialist system as its replacement. Considering that the man who wrote this book had such a close position to the president, it's no surprise that some of the ideas in this book eventually became public policy.

Philip Dru, the main character, is a West Point graduate who eventually resigns his post and becomes involved in social problems. Dru is chosen to lead an army against the U.S. government led by a puppet president. When Dru gains control he throws the Constitution out the window and nationalizes industries such as the telegraph (remember, it's 1911) and makes corporations subservient to government. He promises a job to every American, and rewrites the state constitutions. Watch for the part where Senator Selwyn talks about how he used direct marketing, etc., to get his man elected as president. Most of what he used is standard operating procedure today. In this book, the people revolt over what he does!

I give the book a low rating because the style is absolutely atrocious. Forget about any kind of character development. It is a poor attempt to wrap up a political treatise to make it palatable to the average joe. If you can get around the cruddy style, there is some gold to be found. This edition is a reprint by the John Birch Society. Give it a shot!
