Customer Reviews:
Slightly Disappointed.......2000-01-16
I was really looking for a book that would enhance my french voacabulary in business situations. What I found was a collection of business correspondance that would help me if I needed to structure some business letters. Return and item to a vendor, etc. Not really what I was looking for. For the price I did not think it was worth it for what it did offer.

Book Description
This volume is a culmination of years of development, and the first to introduce the concepts of superoptimum evaluative and explanatory reasoning. Stuart Nagel's new Quorum book will help academic and practicing attorneys in two important ways. First, by understanding evaluative reasoning, they will gain a better grasp of the appropriate behavior to be adopted if they wish to achieve certain desired goals. Second, by understanding the elements of explanatory reasoning, they will understand how and why decisions are reached. Evaluative reasoning can take several forms. It can help decision-makers select from among several public policy choices. It can enhance individual decision-making and provide means to allocate scarce resources. It can also assist in advocating and influencing decisions, mediating disputes, representing divergent viewpoints, and in assigning people to specific tasks. Explanatory reasoning, on the other hand, will help explain public policy making, and assist users in generalizing from cases and facts, and in understanding relationships. The purpose of explanatory reasoning is also to explain why superoptimum solutions are infrequently adopted and why they are seldom successfully implemented. The use of both kinds of reasoning, says Nagel, are particularly important to those who want a better understanding and want to improve the legal system.
Book Description
Success means something different for everyone. For Bill Rancic, it meant taking the things he loved -- like coming up with exciting ideas and never working a 9-to-5 job -- and translating that into a profitable business. By the time he was thirty, he'd achieved every goal he set for himself by creating an online cigar company from scratch and then using those profits to begin a venture in real estate.
Then an opportunity came by he just couldn't pass up -- a competition to test his own personal drive and street smarts against a talented pool of professional salesmen, marketers, and MBAs, where the prize was working side by side with the master of the deal himself, Donald Trump.
Being on
The Apprentice made Bill Rancic an overnight celebrity. But his winning strategies were developed long before that, and in
You're Hired, he uses examples from his own life to prove that the secrets of success can be found within us all.

This is the book for the host or hostess who wants to create parties that are an unqualified success, with an array of food that is simple to prepare, reasonably inexpensive, and always delicious!
Party Food gives you more than four hundred recipes for finger foods, ranging from the quick and the easy to those that are more lavish and intricate, for party givers who enjoy spending more time in the kitchen. Party Food is as simple as focaccia and as unusual as Mini-Moussaka Rolls; as elegant as classic French PĊté en Croûte and as basic as the perfect Papaya Salsa to serve with chips.
Party Food is beautifully illustrated, brimming with 150 color photographs that show you not only individual dishes, but magnificent spreads and buffets.
Barbara Kafka has created exciting foods that will tantalize everyone's taste buds: Fresh Tomatillo Salsa, Roasted Red Pepper and Mushroom Salad, Vegetable Skewers, and Grilled Marinated Shrimp, which let your guests enjoy sensuous flavors while they mingle and help themselves from bowls and platters. The variety of recipes is astounding -- take your pick from fifty different dips and let your planning evolve from there. In addition, Party Food is chock-full of vegetarian recipes, which are highlighted in green.
One of the most important goals of party planning is making sure that throwing a party doesn't interfere with enjoying it. Barbara Kafka offers explanations of how far ahead a recipe can be made, how dishes can be frozen and/or reheated, and how much of a given item you will need per person. She shares secrets such as freezing chicken to make it easier to cut into strips for kabobs, and using your microwave to reduce preparation time. She also offers a host of flexible recipes such as Sun-Dried Tomato Dip, which can be served by itself, used as a pasta sauce, or enlisted as a base for dozens of other dishes. Party Food is simply the single, perfect party reference for any occasion.
Customer Reviews:
A bit frustrated.......2001-12-20
Well After I received the book I have to say I was quite disappointed because I am one of those people who gives great importance to presentation in the books .After I read the reviews I thought I was going to get a book with lots of nice photographs and various nicely set tables .It turned out that it was just like an encylopedia with lots of recipes and couple of boriiinggg pictures .If you are a visual person like me who likes to read cookbooks when you go to bed DONT BUY IT.The other important thing was that many important ingredients were missing in the greek food that was presented .
The BEST party food book ever.......2001-12-06
This in the one cook book in my extensive collection I return to again and again. It's not pretentious and its fun and easy to use.
The recipies work - Every single recipie I have ever tried works just as expected. There are no surprises. I have used some other big name appetizer books and been dissapointed, not so with Kafka's book. Everything is consistent and delicious. The photos are real and extremly helpfull to picturing the end results.
This book helps with planning whether for a huge party or intimate gathering. Kafka outlines clearly which items can be fixed in advance, what can be frozen and what needs to be prepared on the spur of the moment.
This book is packed with ideas. Kafka makes tons of suggestions for alternative uses of sauces, fillings and breads - all are completly cross referenced with page numbers and names. There is an entire section on dressing up "ready mades." The book covers everything from complete menu suggestions to cocktails to homemade breads to simple spreads.
Finally, one of my favorite features is the extensive cross referenced index. It's easy to find anything you want whether you search on ingredients, origin or theme. I love this book and have purchased it as a gift for all of my family and friends.
A Must For Those Who Love To Entertain.......2000-11-24
This book covers almost every type of party food you could imagine, and organizes them in easy to follow chapters. As a cook who loves to entertain, I have used many recipes from this book and have always received rave reviews. The photos are particularly appealing, and the recipes are easy to follow, with helpful tips and tricks sprinkled throughout the book. This is definitely a great reference for those who enjoy entertaining.
The One Best Book when you don't know WHAT to serve!.......1998-12-20
From veggie purist to decadence (including martinis) beyond par, this is an amazing range of recipes for those delectables that will make YOUR party unforgettable. Choose a theme - you'll find a menu here! Or look in the frig - match what you have to what Kafka suggests. It's a big step beyond my other cookbooks with their "appetizer" sections - inspiring, fun yet SIMPLE. Great ideas on presentation... the art that follows the cooking.
Easy to read and use. Beautiful to look at!.......1998-12-06
Barbara Kafka's Party Food has simple straightforward recipes. She has a grasp on what modern family life is like. There are lots of hints on how to make entertaining fun and relaxing. As an added plus the book has beautiful photographs. It is almost pretty enough to display. It is a great gift for any level of cook.

REAL TRADING IN THE JUNGLE.......2006-09-06
Very complete package.Markets are zero sum games where predators and prey can interchange their status in seconds.Funny book and booklet containing author insights about trading and life. The MEAT of the package are the audio series plus workbook where you will find first a way of thinking that will allow you to clear the fog of the market and second a specific tecnique for entries and exits in your chosen markets.Paradoxically ,I recommend it for advanced traders, since my belief is that a novice will not be able to absorb the material before he is digested by the predators roaming every financial market in search of tender prey.

Customer Reviews:
A sentimental tribute to Mom.......2005-05-03
With Mother's Day just around the corner, Zondervan has released a loving portrait of one of the 20th century's most visible wives and mothers --- Ruth Bell Graham, wife of Billy and mother to Anne (Graham Lotz), Franklin, Gigi, Ruth, and Ned. Ruth is the author of this collection of memories and her sepia-tinged prose is full of personal stories that create a scrapbook-like profile of her mother that spans Ruth Bell's childhood in China to her current role as family matriarch in North Carolina.
A LEGACY OF LOVE is certainly sentimental, but it hovers above schmaltz by including many of the lessons Ruth Bell taught her children that garnered her such keen admiration in the first place. One gets the sense that Ruth Bell was a woman with a lot on her mind, most of it relating to her faith, and she was eager to pass that faith-filled perspective along to her children.
"Mother was sitting with a visitor and me looking out at the patch of lawn in the front of our house and the few sentinel pine trees growing up above the lawn from lower ground. Mother told us that, originally, she and my father had planned to build our home at a lower spot on the mountain, about where those pine trees were standing. In order for the house to have a view, Mother and Daddy would have had to cut those trees down. Daddy was open to doing so, but Mother was not. Apparently, the property's original homesteader had carried the trees as saplings on his back all the way from Mount Mitchell, the highest point east of the Mississippi. Mother could not bear to feel the trees after such a sacrifice.
To solve the problem, Mother explained, she and Daddy simply decided to build the house at a higher point on the mountain. 'I find that to be a good way of solving problems,' she said to us without batting an eye. 'Just move to higher ground.'
It was as if she had pulled a new adage out of thin air!"
Ruth goes on to say that such matter-of-fact, didactic moments punctuated her growing-up years with unbelievable frequency. Her mother was able to extrapolate little lessons from life easily and naturally without sacrificing her sense of empathy and compassion.
That Ruth is able to capture her mother's spirit so beautifully is itself a legacy of her mother. Ruth Bell has a well-documented love of writing, and it's a passion she passed down to her namesake. On her 13th birthday Ruth was given a green leather journal with pages edged in gold, "a grown-up book" in which to record the events of her life. And one suspects it's the discipline of journaling, developed at a young age, that allows her now to recall the days of her life and the lessons of her mother so vividly.
"I have found that writing --- particularly journaling --- is much more than chronicling events. As I imagine must be true for Mother, writing helps me clarify my thinking and get perspective on life. I do record events, but then I try to apply Scripture to those events. I ask God to reveal himself to me in the details of my circumstances as I write them out, and I listen for his voice. I may come to my journal with a jumble of disconnected facts and perceptions; but once I am finished writing, I often have a much better understanding of both what has happened and what perspective I need to adopt," writes Ruth.
Along with memories and lessons learned, the pages of A LEGACY OF LOVE are populated with family artifacts and pictures of the Graham clan taken through the years, including some shots of Ruth Bell in China as a young girl. But this is more than just a scrapbook. Given their shared faith and love of journaling, A LEGACY OF LOVE is an especially moving tribute from daughter to mother.

Book Description
Do we ever really know who our parents are?
When Hillary Johnson learned that her mother had terminal cancer, she left New York City and returned to Minneapolis to care for her mother in her final years. While coping with the practical and emotional difficulties such a situation would cause any daughter, she slowly discovered what she had failed to see in the two decades since she'd left home for college and later career: her mother's identity as a woman, independent of the role of mother or wife.
In vivid snapshots of memory Johnson recalls her intense and sometimes troubled relationship with her irrepressible parent, Ruth Jones, who married at eighteen, had two young children by the time she was twenty-one and a few years later moved to Paris with her young children in search of a more fulfilling life. "Gone to Paris, took the kids," read the note she left her husband.
MY MOHER DYING is a beautifully written and emotionally compelling account of how two woman get to look beyond the role of mother and daughter and see two complex individuals who are given a final chance to truly know one another under the pressure of impending death.
Customer Reviews:
Most poignant memoir of a mother/daughter relationship.......2000-10-14
I feel I cannot do justice writing a review on such a high caliber memoir. Emotions run so deep and the characters are made so lifelike that I felt such a kinship with this family. Hillary Johnson is a fantastic writer and a fabulous daughter and caretaker. She deserves five gold stars for the wonderful job she did taking care of her mother through such dramatic medical horrors. I am honored and enriched for having read her book. Her mother was the bravest of women who faced life and illness with the best attitude possible. Her book will be the biggest help to me as my mother's health continues to decline. Thank you to both of you, Hillary and Ruth. Your mother was absolutely right to encourage the writing of this painful, truthful account of her living and dying. I am ordering it now for my sisters.
Eloquent and Fine.......2000-03-03
This "shared memoir" is a gem in every way: from the author's eloquent writing style to her mother's whimsical yet provocative drawings and even the smooth surfaces of the pages. Like the physical feel of the pages and the colors in her mother's artwork, the authors' words are finely wrought and rich. I didn't want to put the book down.
Wonderful book!.......2000-01-31
This book is a entrancing autobiography and biography of a woman and her mother and in particular the story of a rekindeling of their connection as adults when the mother is diagnosed with terminal cancer. Unlike the suggestion of the title this is not a depressing story, it is strongly life affirming, funny and an interesting look at two remarkable women. It has helped me greatly in dealing with my own mother's death from cancer. I recomend it highly!
A daughter's memoir, with her mother's letters and art.......1999-09-28
I have just finished reading MY MOTHER DYING by Hillary Johnson, art by Ruth Jones, the mother Johnson nursed during her final illness. This is a beautiful memoir to the complex relationship of mothers and daughters, a memoir addressing those who have cared for and wathced a loved one die, a memoir about the coming of age of a woman who became a wife and mother at a very young age in the fifties. Ms. Johnson has captured the magnificence and complexity of the mother-daughter relationship, an artist's struggle to express herself, a family member dealing with the myriad of problems that are present in watching a loved one pass on. The author's prose is glorious, and she uses many notes her mother wrote to her after she was rendered mute fom throat cancer surgery. Johnson has preserved the many legal pads filled by her Mother after her surgery, and uses them in her book to give a voice to Ruth for all, and a voice from Ruth to her daughter. The bonus for readers is the reproduction of Ruth Jones' art, whimsical and telling of her life, and the insight it gave her daughter into her mother's own self expression.

Just as her mother always said to her, "Eat! Eat!" Ruth Kanin says the same to you with this warm platter of favorite Jewish recipes, Lithuanian dishes, and Russian standards.
Some 125 recipes, which were once handed down from mother to daughter are offered in an easy to follow format that uses modern cooking techniques without acrificing any of the old world flavor.
Chopped liver, Chicken soup with Matzo Balls, Capoosta: Russian Cabbage Soup, Fried Kasha, Baked Chicken Sadie, all the home, hearth and love traditional dishes are there.
Also included is a section offering holiday menus and cooking tips.
Nosh - treat yourself to hearty, satisfying old country dishes.
Tried & true family cookery for body and soul.......2003-03-20
This is Ms. Kanin's tribute to her mother, a cookbook and a memoir rolled into one. These dishes nourished her family physically and spiritually for generations. The recipes range from old world favorites to family inventions and new acquisitions, all tried & true. Her challah (and its cinnamon swirl bread variation) is one of the best I have had. Her cakes, potato kugel, blintz, and knishes were very nice. Although not a glamourous book (no color photos), I like its helpful sections about cooking technique and nutrition. It is a great fun to read too.

Customer Reviews:
Mom looks depressed!.......2001-09-07
I agree with the reviewer who says the mother looks weary. In fact, I'll go a step further and say this mom looks very depressed, like she can't even hold herself up straight. The colors and sparseness of the pictures also further accentuate the feeling of depression. Even the mother's clothes--the girl brings her mother a dress because it "makes her look like sunshine" but the dress fits the mother like a sack that hangs to her ankles. The mother rarely smiles, her hair is unkempt and hanging all over her face, and in the scene where the little girl is bathing, mom is humped over while seated on a stool, and reading a book--like she couldn't care less if the kid drowns in the tub. I felt exhausted and dreary after I skimmed through this at a bookstore. My question was--why? The text is sweet, but why would a publisher print a book with such horrible pictures? Why not a cheery mom who is enjoying her daughter? Why this morbid look at a woman who looks like she can't stand the kid and is going to swallow sleeping pills at the end of the day? I don't profess to understand the publishing industry, but I don't understand the purpose of this God-awful book. I gave it a one star because the pictures totally overwhelm the text.
Artwork is depressing.......2001-08-30
I was going to buy this book for a colleague who just had a baby girl, thinking it would be nice for them to read it together when the baby was older. However, I was put off by the illustrations. The mother looks very weary in many of the pictures, like she's not have enjoying her daughter at all. It's in sharp contrast to the text. Especially the scene where the girl is taking a bath. She rattling on about how she smells like her mother because she uses mommy's soap, while the mother is sitting there ignoring her and reading a book. Her hair is falling in her face and she looks very weary, like she just can't wait for the kid to finish her bath and get to bed. All in all, I found the artwork rather dreary and it made me tired to look at the mother. Mothers get tired enough chasing after small children, they don't need to read a picture book and see that as well. I don't recommend it, and am really surprised why the reviewer thinks the art is so wonderful. I'd give it a one star but the text is cute.
Into My Mother's Arms.......2001-06-24
"Into My Mother's Arms" is a charming story about a day in the life of a young girl and her mother. The beautiful, warm watercolor illustrations breathe life into the simple, yet sweet narration. My favorite illustration is of the mother brushing her daughter's hair. The scene that really stands out in the book is when they are at the park. The girl decides to go on the "big slide". However, when she reaches the top she is unsure, but can't go back down because someone is behind her. But then she sees her mother at the bottom, smiling, and she gets the courage to slide down into her waiting arms. This is a wonderful book for mothers and daugthers.
A lovely picturebook of a mother and daughter........2000-05-09
Sharon Jennings' Into My Mother's Arms is a lovely picture book told written simply and with great good humor, showing a trusting relationship between a mother and her daughter. Staring with breakfast together and followed by grocery shopping and a visit to the park, a girl and her mother move through their day with true affection. With her illustrations of ruffled lavender nightgown, a protruding belly in the bathtub, a dandelion crown, sunshine yellow dresses and more, artist Ruth Ohi perfectly captures and showcases the familiar little details of childhood. Into My Mother's Arms is highly recommended for family, school, and community library picturebook collections for young readers.

Book Description
When Hillary Johnson learned that her mother, Ruth, had terminal cancer, she left New York City and returned to Minneapolis to care for Ruth in her final years. While coping with the practical and emotional difficulties such a situation would cause any daughter, she slowly discovered what she had failed to see in the two decades since she'd left home for college: her mother's identity as a woman, independent of the role of mother or wife.
My Mother Ruth is a beautifully written and emotionally compelling account of how two woman get to look beyond the role of mother and daughter and see two complex individuals who are given a final chance to truly know one another under the pressure of impending death.
