I had thought I had read and/or heard just about everything
by Harvey Mackay (SWIM WITH THE SHARKS WITHOUT BEING
EATEN ALIVE is one of my favorite self-help books of all time),
but somehow I missed his cassette program, HOW TO BUILD
A NETWORK OF POWER RELATIONSHIPS . . . what a shame,
too, in that it's great!

It makes it clear why there's a need to build your own personal network,
then shows you how to go about getting it off the ground . . . the ideas
contained can be used in countless business situations, as well as
in your personal life.

There were only two cassette tapes in the program . . . yet they
contained so many valuable tidbits in them that I found it hard
just trying to select these few to cite:

* Call somebody on his or her birthday. You'll do a lot of business
that way.

* Find what a person is most proud of.

* You don't have to know everybody as long as you know people
who do.

* Remember something about everybody you meet. Then find a creative
way to keep in touch with that person.

* 70% of all jobs are from networking, 2% are from sending out resumes,
10-12% from want ads, and 4% from people creating their own.

* Acid test of hiring: Within 10 minutes of an interview, I'd ask
myself, "How would I feel if that person was working for my
competitors?" And if I'm not worried, that's the end of the interview.

Great for "networking beginners".......2005-11-08

This material is very valuable for someone who is just learning about how to network-- especially for young adults, new college graduates, etc. We use this material as a standard part of a curriculum on networking we do for college women. It's true that we don't use or recommend his exact tools but a large part of learning about how to network is adopting the mentality of recognizing the opportunities, and of recognizing reciprocity. I think his material is inspiring and fun to listen to, and I highly recommend it for "beginners". His examples of networking success and networking blunders are eye opening. I like this material, and I recommend it!

Good Ideas but Alittle Out-dated.......2005-03-06

I think this audio cassette gives some good ideas and reasons for keeping in touch with people and learning how to network. I think alot of the ideas talked about are really worthwhile things to put into practice.
But the basis of this is the author's Rolodex. He lightly touches on Outlook or computers as ways to keep in touch with people. I would like to see this updated with more ideas for using computers and the internet for putting the author's ideas into practice.

Save Your Money.......2002-01-10

This is merely common sense stuff folks. I really felt cheated when I listened to it. It bored me out of my skull. I would prefer listening to Jack Welch 50 times in a row than have to hear the plodding, mono-tone, comon sensical tripe that's on these. Nothing new or innovative. Save your money.

I read this book for myself, but ended up giving the chapter "WHAT'S IT WORTH" to my account coordinator when she was struggling with the decision of whether or not to accept a competitor's job offer. After reading the chapter and doing the lessons, she decided to stay with me. It turns out that her values were more alligned with my philosophies and the fact that the competitors were offering more money didn't carry as much weight as she first assumed. I would have been lost without her, so this book certainly saved my sanity!

If you are looking for a great informative handbook to keep available at your desk in the office, I recommend How 9 Handbook. This is by far an excellent handbook to have. How 9 handbook gives you information on grammar usage, memos, reports, and business documents. The numbers listed on the front of the book, helps in finding the material you need easily. Clark & Clark hit a home run with this book. Also, if you need a little refresher course to enhance your skills, I recommend the How 9 Workbook. Try them both for yourself!! Every office worker should have one.

A look at the Rodney King Riots from the streets.......2001-08-16

I read this book a few years ago after hearing radio personality Dennis Prager recommend it. It is a very worthwhile read. Williams chronicles his upbringing in the midwest and how it differed from most of his friends (piano practice while the others played in the street). He also gives an intimate look at how valuable that upbringing was to him as an adult (childhood friends in prison while he was trying to make it in the entertainment field). This introduction gives a good background for the frustration and shock at what followed the Rodney King verdict in 1992 when the news hit the streets. These emotions prompted Williams to run out of him home (in the area of the riots) in an effort to try to do something positive in the middle of the chaos. This sets up the story of how Williams rescued a Japanese man from attackers during the riots, and the publicity the act inspired. Although this act was only a minor news story in the larger story of the riots, it is just as large a human story. It is very thought provoking and makes for an interesting and quick read. I would recommend it to anyone that wants a first person look at the riots. My wife used it as one of many sources for a college term paper on the riots.

Estimates abound of the rates of growth and inflation in the People's Republic of China, but most are not internationally comparable. This study by a distinguished Chinese economist applies techniques which do permit international comparisons of the real indicators of Chinese economic performance. One conclusion is that inflation rates are higher than has been thought until now, while GDP growth may be lower. On the other hand, estimating the Chinese GDP at internationally comparable prices shows that the income level of this country is vastly underestimated by official statistics. The implications of such conclusions for the role of China in the world economy are likely to change the way we foresee China's development as a world economic player in the years to come. The author pleads for a refining of Chinese national accounting to harmonise it with internationally recognised systems. In addition, he recommends that the Chinese authorities should strive for better accuracy in their statistical sources.

Extremely Poor.......2007-10-05

The author didn't do her homework. Ten minutes of Google yields more fruit that this tome. Her appraisal of "The Ghost Writer" pilot is particuarly obtuse, as the version she saw was obviously heavily edited unlike the ones currently on view on You Tube. A shabby excuse for a book, devoted to subject matter that deserves better. Understandably, this is now out of print. How it was published in the first place is mystifying.

Semi-scholarly to mask a dearth of insight.......1998-12-11

I opened this book with high hopes, being a huge fan of Tony Perkins, and was disappointed to find it consists largely of flippant remarks/opinions by its author rather than any serious probing or insight into this remarkable theatrical family. As a listing of career moments, it is fine, but as a biography or anything deeper than a roster, it is very thin. Some of the so-called chapters are merely one paragraph long, in which the author says she could not come up with any info.

Slim pickings.......1998-12-04

This is basically a textbook, quite dry and academic, except for the author's occasional slips of mild witticism which occasionally make up an entire chapter (usually when she was unable to come up with any hard information). I found this admirable for its obvious effort, but ultimately unsatisfying as it offers little to no insight into either Perkins personally, and has a funny tone of proprietariness and prudishness. Also, why the high price? Not worth it. Stick with the biography.

Excellent Account of Perkins' career........1998-05-12

Laura Kay Palmer's book was a treat and is a treat to any Anthony Perkins fan. She covers absolutely every bit of work Tony ever did and thankfully exposes what a gifted and brilliant actor/director/screenwriter/singer he was and always will be. It helps considerably that she knows whereof she speaks. Her reviews of his music and film and television work,(that which was available), are incisive, intelligent and unbiased, contrary to what one might expect from a fan of his work. When she likes a film that was poorly received by critics and public alike, she supports herself very well and backs up her competent criticism with elements of the work in question that failed to dawn on critics of that time. She also speaks out heartily against the "post-Psycho revisionism" that almost completely destroyed any respect he had as an actor up to this point. She also conjures up quite an impressive bibliography, which is worth reading by itself. Pick this up instead of Charles Winecoff's SPLIT IMAGE.

This is the story of rubber, of Thomas William Coyne, and his daughter, the author of Gum-Dipped. Employed for thirty-seven years by the Firestone Tire & Rubber Coompany in Akron, Ohio, young T.W. Coyne moved his family in 1952 to a small Tudor house in Firestone Park, the residential community built in 1916 by Harvey S. Firestone for Firestone employees. Everything in the Park bore the Firestone name--the school, the streets, the stores, the bank, the tires, the clubhouse, the stoves and radios. A huge bronze statue of the founder, Harvey S. Firestone, stood--and still stands--at the entrance on a hill.
Working for Firestone and living in Firestone Park, T.W. Coyne thought he and his family were safe, "set for life." But the final act Firestone wrote for Mr. Coyne was very different from the happy scenes early in his career. It comprised demotions, a firing, a union rally cry, a flirtation with suicide, illnesses from chemicals, and despair, and the razing of the plant where he had spent his life.
The author discovers her own Firestone legacy as she thinks about her father. It is one family's story, but also a chapter in a larger story about industry and family at a deceptively comfortable time in American History.

a stunning achievement.......2004-02-19

I was deeply moved by Joyce Dyer's tribute to her father, an expression of love that manages to eschew mere sentimentality.
What is impressive is that Gum-Dipped succeeds on another level entirely. Lots of books claim to be about the sense of place, or urban tissue, or the urban experience (as opposed to form), but not very many deliver on that promise. Gum-Dipped really does convey a sense of what it meant to grow up in Akron during the 1950s and 60s--of what it meant to live in a company town, to count on Harvey Firestone to see you through, and to be betrayed in the end.
