In review of the autobiography I read, Think Like a Champion: Building Success One Victory at a Time by Mike Shanahan, I learned a great deal about succeeding on the football field. But more importantly, I learned about succeeding in life.

The book begins with Shanahan in college at Eastern Illinois University. Shanahan played quarterback on the Eastern Illinois football team and was routinely tackled during games. However, after being fiercely tackled during one particular game, Shanahan was rushed to the emergency room. Within hours Shanahan had undergone surgery to remove a badly ruptured kidney, and was soon told he could never play football again.

Wanting to remain close to the game he loved, Shanahan decided to try his hand at coaching. His first coaching stop was in Oklahoma as a part-time assistant coach for the University of Oklahoma Sooners. That year the Sooners won the National College Football Championship, and Shanahan was soon offered coaching jobs at other universities. He was an assistant coach at his alma mater, Eastern Illinois University, and at the University of Florida before moving to the professional ranks. As a professional football coach, Shanahan coached teams like the San Francisco 49ers and the Denver Broncos. Under Shanahan's direction, both of these teams won Super Bowl Championships.

Throughout the book, Shanahan states that he has learned something from every step he has taken in his coaching career. He notes that coaching football was not what he had wanted to do with his life; he wanted to play the game. But he acknowledges that he would probably never have made the pros as a player and would never have had the opportunities he had experienced as a coach.

In the book, Shanahan identifies a few key things he says are critical for success on and off the football field; preparing, sacrificing, competing, and persevering. Without any one of these items, success would not be possible. Shanahan also says that life may take you a direction you weren't planning to go, but that it is important to do your best, no matter what life has to offer.

After reading this book, I have a new perspective on coaching, and a new outlook on life. Hearing that perspective shared by a future Hall of Fame candidate, like Mike Shanahan, makes it even more powerful. I have heard this advice before: If you want to be successful
at something, find the most successful person you can in that area, listen to what they say, and try to follow it. Well, its hard to imagine a football coach more sucessful than Mike Shanahan. Here's a guy who started with a dream: to be a head football coach, started as an unpaid volunteer for a college team, and worked his way to be one of the best, most respected, coaches in the NFL (winning 2 consecutive Superbowls) at a young age.

The great thing is, he has written a book that is designed to help people win beyond football, in any area of life. Shanahan breaks it down for you: the way he prepares, some struggles he's had, some ways he motivates people (including the little things that we learn are so critical), very good wisdom concerning life, and a lot more. Also very critical is the fact that this book is very easy to read and understand.

You even get a bonus section in each chapter written by some of the greatest people and minds in football: Paul Tagliabue, Jerry Rice, Bill Walsh, John Elway, Deion Sanders, Steve Young, George Seifert, Joe Montana, Marcus Allen, Al Michaels, and more. They give their own take on the subject being discussed in the chapter, which is not only informative, but like the book itself, filled with wisdom.

The chapters consist of 16 basic areas to focus on to become successful, things like: Preparing (all of life is preparation, and not preparing is preparing to fail), Sacrificing (don't expect to get anything good done without sacrifice, if it was easy, everyone would do it), Learning (without learning, you will be hopelessly stuck where you are), Detailing (the devil is definitely in the details and that's where things often break down). This is just a taste of the wisdom in this book. Highly recommended for people looking to improve themselves.

What a Success Story! Motivational!.......2001-05-25

A die-hard Broncos fan from the days dying watching those ridiculous striped socks and watching Fran Tripuka get killed, what a job Shanahan did turning it around into two Super Bowls in a row.

Learning of his background and his principles makes me now not only a more avid Bronco fan, but also a Shanahan fan as well. His perseverance from the days of his kidney injury to how he became part of Sooner coaching staff till today is truly one of principles of success through hard work, not gifts or who you know or any of the other myths most people who never get anywhere fall for and are unmotivated. Most of them just don't ever want to work hard at anything, but have it handed to them. Shanahan disproves all that bunk and shows how it came to be. Unbelievable that when given the Raiders head-job, didn't even have the downpayment for a house.

This guy is very endearing to so many of us who never had the backgrounds for those connections, but wanting something bad enough, and always believing it, achieve it one goal at a time.

Great advice, especially appreciate his concern for balance.

Straight-forward, crisply articulated and with practically no unnecessary fluff, Mike Shanahan's book, "Think Like a Champion," compellingly argues that the game of life is basically won or lost before the "players" take the field. Shanahan asserts his point of view over sixteen easy-to-digest chapters (each about ten pages or less) on the diffent tenets of becoming the best at what you do.

What I liked about this book is that while the author culls specific examples from his football career, the "moral of the story" is clearly applicable to ANYONE seeking to become the best in any endeavor. Offering an excellent, enjoyable read to both sports enthusiasts and non enthusiasts alike, the author's writing style is to neither excessively arm-wave nor make unsupported generalizations.

In fact, part of the Shanahan's credibility here is in his willingness to name names when providing examples of people living up to a credo espoused in a given chapter or more dramatically, falling short.

Written with humility, Shanahan's book leaves the reader feeling that there is nothing magical to becoming a huge success -- other than having a plan and putting in the blood, sweat and tears required to make that plan a success. Or as the author concludes, citing legendary coach Vince Lobardi, "Your quality of life is in direct proportion to your commitment to excellence." So true.

I've cooked with garlic all my life but never knew there were so many other delicious ways to cook and use garlic. Love this book and highly recommend for the beginner as well as a seasoned cook. The recipes are from all over the world and photos alone are enough to motivate you to create these unforgettable crowd pleasures.

.........this collection of almost fifty international recipes that are chock full of garlic is simply wonderful so far. Many of the recipes are accompanied by mouth watering photos that will make any garlic lover eager to start whipping up a few dishes immediately! Just a few of the recipes that we've enjoyed in my kitchen so far include: Roasted Garlic, Bruschetta Con Pomodori, Garlic Soup, Chicken with 40 Cloves of Garlic, Lamb and Spinach Curry, Mushrooms Sautéed with Garlic and Parsley and Braised Cauliflower with Indian Spices.

We are also eager to try: Garlic Shrimp, Thai Noodle Salad, North Beach Cioppino, Thai Grilled Garlic Chicken, Indian Garlic Beef with Peas, and much more.

There is a minor disappointment with this cookbook. For those familiar with "The Best of......" cookbook series, some of these recipes will look familiar. I can tell you that I own "The Best of Mexico" and that numerous, albeit very delicious, recipes (Arroz Mexicana, Salsa Verde, Mexican Garlic Black Bean Soup, Grilled Achiote Shrimp, Mole Poblano de Guajolote, Pozole Rojo) from this cookbook now turn up in "The International Garlic Cookbook". The only modification made to each of these recipes is that the amount of garlic has been increased. I felt a bit "ripped off" by the re-use of these recipes, and due to the fact that each was perfectly fine when originally published containing less garlic. Had the authors not done this, I would be eager to give this cookbook five stars.

The author goes right to the point. He explains well the VaR-related mathematics. There are a few mistakes, which would be easier to note if all derivations were provided. Overall, this is an excellent book.

Best book on VaR.......2001-03-19

When we went to implement a VaR system, the price tag was going to exceed seven figures. Needless to say, I didn't hesitate to drop some money buying the available books on VaR. They all say essentially the same things. For practical worked examples, you can't beat Butler. But unless you are an absolute beginner (do you know what delta and gamma are?) you may find it too basic. The all-round best book is Dowd. It is well organized and a pleasure to read. It covers the math, but without getting bogged down in meaningless derivations. For readers who want more information, there are plenty of references to original sources. I followed up on a number of these, and was pleasantly surprised at how easy some of this stuff is to assimilate.

Not for implementors........2000-06-12

The author has done good work in introducing the basic concepts in Value-at-Risk. However, the text leaves some important statistical and implementation points hidden, making implementing VaR look far too easy. For example, there is no discussion about the problems involved in long-term forecasting of correlations and volatilities.

The much advertised "new distinctive investment approach", the so called "Generalized Sharpe Rule" is a rather naive treatment on classical risk/return analysis. However, the lack of mathematical rigour is well compensated with good references.

Best book on VaR to date. Clear, concise, self-contained. Perfect combination of rigurous theory with practical applications. The author has done an excellent job at distilling what is relevant in Risk Management. This book is better than all the other VaR books written so far combined.

Judith Hillman Paterson, a journalism professor at the University of Maryland, has fashioned a courageous chronicle of a horrific childhood that included an alcoholic father, who once beat her until she blacked out, and a mother who died at age 31 after years of mental illness and substance abuse and left behind four children under the age of 10. Sweet Mystery mostly takes place in the rural South around the time of World War II, during the author's first decade. Seen through the eyes of a child, the book tells of a life filled with grief and trauma.

Five stars aren't enough.......2001-07-27

I first read about Judith Paterson in the University of Maryland Magazine. An article described a new television program called "The Writer's Tale" with Judith Paterson as creator and host. I wrote to Judith about my book, "How to Find a Fella in the Want Ads," and she invited me to discuss the writing process on her show. As soon as we finished taping, she said she had to go to the metro to meet the next author she was interviewing. As she left she gave me a copy of "Sweet Mystery." I'd never heard of the book. That night at bedtime I opened her book and began to read.

Every night for the next week I read "Sweet Mystery." When I reached the next to last chapter, I went back to the beginning and began reading it again. I can't ever recall when I've been so reluctant to let a book go. It is enchanting, a brilliantly written story of love and so of-the-moment that I felt like I was there with her as she revisited her childhood.

As a writer, I am in awe of Judith's skill at weaving the culture of the south into her personal story. It is seamless! As a historian, it is exciting to experience the south's history from an insider's perspective.

The book is a series of gently told stories with space left for the reader's imagination. I suppose that's why I called all my friends. I am leery about foisting my taste in books on my friends because they are opinionated and choosy, but "Sweet Mystery" is the best book I've read in years.

Above and beyond its value as a superb read, I want to urge two other groups to read it: families coping with alcoholism and battered women and the children of both.

Reconstruction, Survival, and Joy.......2001-07-21

I heard the author speak at a conference in Washington, D.C. last week. Afterwards, I immediately ran to the closest book store to purchase a copy. The very large store was sold out! I finally located a copy when I returned home from the conference. I couldn't wait to begin reading it and once I began, I was entranced and couldn't put it down. I felt like she was writing my own story. Her successful life journey and her beautiful writing makes me yearn to write my own story.

This book by Judith H. Paterson should be in every library -- public and academic. It should also be required reading for every individual. It would be a wonderful book for class projects on family history in high school and college.

Sweet Mystery is about the author's personal life journey; it is about sturggle; it is about survival; it is poetically written; it is heart-rendering; and it is joyful.

Read this magnificent book immedaitely!
