Good intro but that is it.......2007-08-03
This is a good intro to give the basics of valuation for "old economy" businesses. It determines the valuation of companies based almost exclusively on their cash flow over the previous few years to the analysis. Unfortunately it ignores too many issues that play an extremely important role in valuation. For example, the quality, background, knowledge of management, the products the company manufactures, the markets for these products, macroeconomic conditions, intellectual property, market position (i.e., oligopolistic? Is entry/exit difficult in the industry?). Not one of these issues is even touched upon!!! The authors seem to be implying that these issues are irrelevant!! Only the cash flow over the previous few years applied forward (i.e., discounted for present value) matters according to the book!!! Perhaps this type of mentality explains why the overwhelming majority of mergers and acquistions fail!!!!
Nothing spectacular.......2006-04-03
Unfortunately, for all the name brand that this book conveys, I think the cover seems to be the most intriguing part. There are much better ways for book peddling and the fact that a firm such as McKinsey allowed their name on the title of a book for the sake of a few sales, boggles this readers mind. The subject matter seems to be along the lines of the bull session with all bull and no session. No actual quantitative analysis is used throughout the book, and if anything more than an encyclopedic definition is learned from this book, I would be astounded. Save some money and go search online for some basic books on beginning valuation. By the way, those giving 5 stars either can't read English very well or are shills for McKinsey.
Waste of Time.......2005-04-12
Any book by Damodaran is far better for business managers and portfolio managers.
For portfolio managers, estimating the cash-flows is a small part of the valuation process, the easiest. As the financial field and practice is becoming more and more quantitative, the cutting edge of asset pricing is to estimate time-varying risk premiums. Actually, almost 90% of variation in stock prices come from risk shifts, not from news on company cash-flows.
If you are interested in asset pricing i would suggest a mix of damodaran (20%) and "Asset Pricing" by John Cochrane (80%).
Good but bad Excel support.......2004-01-29
I liked this book. In Russia it is one of the most popular books on valuatuion. But when I can get the perfect excel support for Investment Valuation by Aswath Damodaran or good web support for Valuation Methods and Shareholder Value Creation by Pablo Fernandez, I ask the authors, why don't they put supporting material in disk? I think that the price of their sowtware ($94.50) is too high compairing with the book ($56 with discount), because there is no supporting materials - only 1 spreadsheet (from my point of view does not conform to McKinsey, as the leader of consulting business). I hope, for the 4-th edition we will have a good excel support.
User-unfriendliness at its best.......2003-01-11
Hmm I wonder if those giving this book five stars actually work for McKinsey. As a practioner, I don't know anyone in the industry who has actually read this book. It looks impressive on the bookshelf, but the content is anything but impressive. A lot of topics are covered, but each one only superficially and the writing is extremely dry and boring. I actually found reading this volume *painful*, and I'm supposed to like this stuff since I do it for a living! My advice for any potential buyer is read a few chapters first before you shell out for it.

Customer Reviews:
A lesson for me?.......2007-08-20
I enjoyed this book. It is a compilation of helpful and inspirational thoughts and ideas from all the other books and tapes currently marketed. Kind of a "cliffs notes" of self-discovery.
The author sets the fictional story in a hospital where an accident victim is recovering. He is met by his father, who he has not seen in decades, and his father gives him some advice and a letter before the father passes away. The letter contains details on three life coaches the son must go meet so he can learn and uncover his true self.
The first coach is a priest in Rome. The priest teaches him how to live wisely, using a metaphor of a stained glass window. You see life colored by your perceptions, like looking through a stained glass window you see things colored by the glass. Change your perceptions and life changes.
The second coach is the surfer, who teaches him how to love well. He teaches him to stop living in his head and start living in his heart. Live in the moment and enjoy what is happening right now. Everything you do comes from a place of love or a place of fear. Where are your thoughts coming from right now.
The third coach is a CEO of a brokerage firm. She teaches him how to serve greatly. Telling him you can get anything you want in life if you just help enough other people get what they want, and you must conduct yourself with the utmost integrity.
The majority of this book I have read or heard in other places. Its not new material, but it is presented in a new way. One part of the book talks about how every meeting with another person is your chance to learn something new. If you keep meeting up with people who are filled with problems or complaints, its because they are being sent to you so you can learn a lesson that you need right now. They will continue to be sent to you, UNTIL you learn these lessons.
I guess that makes sense. Maybe this book came my way because it contains a lesson I still need to learn?
Great book - made me think.......2007-04-06
This was a great book and i really enjoyed the story. I did feel that it was very "simple" and rolled a lot of the messages that one learns along the way (and is looking for it) into one and have the feeling that i couldve saved a lot of time and money just by reading this book first.
Nonetheless, it was a very good book - easy read, very simple and extremely helpful. It made me think about some things and i "feel" good after reading it.
Insightful and Entertaining!.......2007-03-17
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is written as a fictional story, but it is chock-full of wisdom and inspiration.
This book is about determining what really matters in life- not money, not material posessions, but the real stuff of life. The main character meets with three inspirational coaches who each offer a slightly different perspective and different advice on living an extraordinary life.
As a Professional Life Coach, I am always looking for books with deep wisdom and useful metaphors. I read this book with my highlighter in hand and I soon found that I had highlighted nearly the entire book! This is a book I will definitely read again and will recommend to my clients.
The information in this book is not new. Many other self-help books contain similar words of wisdom and advice. What was new about this book was the fact that it was an entertaining and easy read. It also contained many metaphors and examples that made it easy to relate to the concepts presented.
This is a wonderful book for anyone who is searching for meaning in their life. Give yourself time to really absorb the concepts and apply them to your life. You may find your life and your world transformed as a result.
the saint the surfer and the ceo.......2007-01-19
a very good book...quick reading ..good insights...
i recommend this book and follow it with the book who will cry when you die...they go hand in hand..
The best bit was the Surfer section.......2006-01-06
For me, that section held more new insights than the others, which tended to fall into the usual self-help talk. Didn't really like the overall style of writing, it was a bit cloying. But the Surfer section on self-love, abt taking care of yourself with the occasional self-pampering did make me stop and think, which was great!

Pretty bad ideas...PARTY FOUL!.......2007-10-05
What happened here!? All of these events have an absolutely horrifying use of color and a tacky implementation of "style"... I am unsure of the experience of the other reviewers...but I am a bit scared of their judgment.
The author's technicolor ideas are thrown off even more by what looks like cheap rentals of yesterday's popular item. It appears that all of his ideas are a day late and a dollar more than what you could find yourself... Eew...
The best of the best!.......2006-05-08
This is the best entertaining book I have ever seen. Not to mention the gorgeous photography. Each section goes thru the most important aspects of having a party and the things that must go into it. You will love this book!
Let's Party!.......2006-03-08
Do you ever wish you could attend one of those upper crust parties? Well you can thanks to "The Art of the Party"!
"The Art of the Party" is a wonderful resource to make any get together even more special. Most of us can't afford to hire Mr. Renny Reynolds, but we can afford to buy his book! I have used the book to transform my modest home and backyard into magical places on many an occasion, whether I'm setting an elegant table for a Holiday meal or creating just the right mood for a celebration.
The photographs are simply gorgeous. The photographer, Mr. Edward Addeo, is extremely gifted at conveying the mood and energy of each party. Many of his photos depict that time just before the guests arrive when you survey the table, candles, lights, decorations, etc., let out the sigh of relief, and then wait with happy anticipation for your guests to arrive and the party to begin. "Search Inside This Book" however doesn't do them any justice. Take my word for it; the photos are beautiful.
Love at First Sight!.......2005-07-26
I love this book! It offers fantastic ideas for making even the simplest party a feast for the eyes. The pictures are so large and colorful. Although many of the events pictured were held in massive spaces, you can easily scale down the decor to your own sized venue. Anyone can use Mr. Reynolds' themes to pack some punch into their party decor: Mexican,Oriental,Beach Party,Birthday, etc. There is enough content in this book to assist you in designing a long remembered celebration. Mr. Reynolds' nine foot tall golden candleabra caught my eye, they were spectacular. Then I purchased another book - by an Australian event designer, and found them used again. She gave him credit for the idea. I know that someday I will find a way to make use of them at a party, possibly in a smaller version. I applaud Renny Reynolds for his artistic acumen...his events are truly ART!
The Art of the Party.......2005-07-16
Renny Reynolds is a talented designer. I own his first book published in 1992 by Viking Studio Books entitled "The Art of the Party, Design Ideas for Succesful Entertaining". While browsing through Amazon, I discovered a more recent book by Mr. Reynolds published in March 2003 by Gibbs Smith in Salt Lake City. Although the name was similar, the publisher and publication date as listed were different. Upon receiving the "new" book, I was surprised to find the EXACT same book published in 1992 with a new book jacket and fly pages. What a disappointment. The pictures and ideas are dated; if you want up to the minute new ideas, do not order this book. I attended parties in the 90's that used these very themes. Why order the new book when you can have the old one with dated ideas much cheaper.

Rumor and greed abound in the futures markets. The fact that price reacts predictably to rumor and greed is the basis of this objective trading strategy.

Trident Trading Strategy By Charles L. Lindsay.......2005-01-13
I think I have digested this book at last. It is really a good approach for trading futures and commodities. would like to discuss the strategy with the other users.
Poor nomenclature snags magnificent concept ..........2002-08-25
The concept behind Trident is great. Mr. Lindsay deserves proper recognition of his work. But while his ideas are great, his capacity to express them leaves you wishing for better clarity, and further elucidation. Initially, as we board the subject, we are presented with the study of three points, P1, P2, and P3. So far, so good. But the foundation of my point comes when we are faced with the study of previous points to the well defined P1, P2, and P3. Here, as we are introduced to the use of a previous point to the P set, that new point is being referenced as P1, and the subsequent points as P2 and P3. So, now the new point is P1, what used to be P1 is now P2, and the old P2 becomes P3. And, as if this would not be confusing enough, still, a preceeding point is brought to the study of the Trident system. And guess what? ... well, you guessed right ... that new point is referenced as P1, and the subsequent two, P2 and P3 ... Five points ... three names ... it just becomes hard to follow Mr. Lindsay's technique ... I have rewritten his formulas in my book, assigning the names P0 and P-1 to those two points that are later introduced in the study ... not without the frustration, the hardship, and the affliction that become an additional cost to understand this great concept ... and I haven't tackled the Bs yet ... Mr. Lindsay overly compensates his lack in communications skills with the gift of his brilliance ... the book would have been worth well over $500, if an expert in the field would have imparted clarity to such plain, simple, and brilliant concept ...
Trident Trading strategy full of promise.......2001-06-10
As a newcomer to trading, I quickly became engrossed in this book. The first five chapters are readily understood, and describe a logical, mechanical trading system, which appears to be based on W.D. Gann's trading principles. The system as such proves to be a profitable trading tool, but the final chapter, which shows promise of being the icing on the cake, is intangible and not easily understood. This is very frustrating for, although I have read the entire book several times, the essence of that final chapter still eludes me. The appendix speaks of further Trident developments in the future, but to my knowledge, Charles L. Lindsay has written nothing further on the subject, sadly.

A wealth of information on mutual funds........1999-10-06
As a seasoned investor, I have read countless books on this subject matter. However, I found this particular book to be very well written and extremely difficult to put down. Especially, during those times when I learned something new. This is a great book on mutual funds and belongs in every serious long-term investor's library.
She points way to profits in bad times as well as in good ........1999-05-05
What most of us need is a guide for all seasons...and this seems to be it! It really isn't true that anyone can make it in a strong up market. Just look at the majority of mutual funds that lag the S & P right now! And what then can we expect when the market turns down? It always has and it likely always will.
Stacie Zoe Berg makes mutual fund investing understandable to those of us who haven't the time to become experts. She leads us on the frenzied ascent to market tops...But, she also leads us through the frightening market wilderness on the downside. There's always risk, but for those of us who stay the course sensibly, Stacie Berg's formula should be just what we've been looking for.
And, Mr. Publisher, Stacie Berg wrote the book...She didn't just edit it. You need to get that right, also.
A complex subject made understandable.......1999-04-18
Hats off to Stacie Zoe Berg for making a sometimes confusing and incomprehensible subject not only understandable but enjoyable as well!!
This was an excellent source of information........1999-04-08
I knew very little about investing in mutual funds prior to reading this book, but now feel comfortable giving it a try. What a great book!
Best Mutual Fund Book I Have Read!!.......1999-04-03
This was a remarkable book. I couldn't put it down and read it from cover to cover. There was so much information contained in the book. I already new some information about mutual funds, but this book taught me a whole lot more that will really be useful in helping me make money with my money. It is a must have book for any financial library.

An Exceptional Guide to Investment and Money Management.......2000-12-16
The Unofficial Guide to Online Investing by Henry Robb is an excellent guide for the individual investor. If you're looking for an extremely thorough, reader-friendly, comprehensive reference tool for not only online investing but a myriad of other vital financial concerns, look no further. It's obvious that the author took great pains in putting this book together. It's wonderfully written in an interesting, easy-to-understand style that doesn't intimidate or confuse the reader. On the contrary, you get the feeling that Mr. Robb has been an investment veteran for a number of years and through his day-to-day experience in dealing with the various financial markets, he has gained a great deal of wisdom on the subject.
The information, which is meticulously organized, is highly objective in nature. The author paints a very honest, if sobering view, of the overall financial picture, and he gives the reader an opportunity to find out about him- or herself with the inclusion of various personality assessment exercises. They were very helpful in gauging where I stand regarding investing, and they'll provide a basic framework or starting point, if you will, for my future investment decisions.
Lastly, I would like to reiterate that this book discusses a wide variety of financial issues within the context of personal investment. That is a key reason why I believe this book is so useful. Its scope as well as its careful attention to detail makes The Unofficial Guide to Online Investing a truly wonderful source of information, as it addresses just about every kind of question relating to individual money management.
Should be titled "The Unofficial Guide to Personal Finance".......2000-08-26
This book should have been titled "The Unofficial Guide to Personal Finance". Only Part IV, chapters 10 through 13, about 160 pages are devoted to online investing, and it's at a very elementary level. The rest of the book deals with bank accounts, credit cards, debt reduction, insurance, taxes, and other personal finance issues. If you want to learn about Online Investing, leave this book on the shelf and look for another book which has doesn't have all this non-Online Investing stuff. Leave this POS on the shelf.
An Outstanding Reference.......2000-04-15
I just finished reading "the Unofficial Guide to Online Investing". This is a great book for the beginner through experienced individual investor. Robb covers all the critical topics in stages, increasing detail with each stage. What results is an excellent tutorial/reference (not to mention an easy read) concerning all aspects of investing. Starting with setting your house in order to planning and executing an investment plan. Well Done!
Book Description
What does it take to build a successful corporate alliance? The dramatically high failure rate -- estimated at 60 to 75% -- suggests that alliance managers often lack the knowledge and skills to determine strategic fit, negotiate win-win agreements, align organizational cultures, and -- perhaps most important of all -- get people to work together productively. This book provides the practical guidance needed to make alliances work. In The Strongest Link, strategic alliance experts Slowinski and Sagal draw on over 40 years of experience working with companies to form strong, profitable collaborations, including AT&T, NEC, Battelle, Eli Lilly, and Procter & Gamble. Packed with stories of these and other companies, the book features exclusive, proven methodologies for planning, structuring, and negotiating an alliance, as well as strategies for training participants in collaborative management.
The Strongest Link is a true field guide, a down-in-the-trenches look at how to avoid the troubles that plague so many alliance efforts and how to forge a collaborative link that adds value to all participants.
Customer Reviews:
Very useful book.......2003-09-22
Most books on alliances give broad advice or a 50,000 foot view of the topic. This book is different. It provides practical tools. My team now uses the Alliance Framework and Alliance Implementation Program to create and manage our deals.
The Best Book on Alliances.......2003-09-06
As a business Student who studied coporate alliances, and a corporate personel who has witnessed the planning and implementation of alliances, i believe "the strongest Link" deserves the highest ranking on the subject. This book is a MUST read for all CEOs and everyone in mangement, especially those who make decisions on alliances. This is an excellent book.
The best book on this subject.......2003-09-04
I have read most of the books on strategic alliances. The Strongest Link is the first book I have found that provides practical, insightful, and detailed help on just what I should do to plan, negotiate, and implement these relationships. It will be immediately useful to anyone from a CEO or other corporate executives to managers who have specific alliance responsibilities. Give a copy to everyone in your company who deals with alliances.
GREAT BOOK.......2003-09-03
his book is a must read for anyone who's involved in Strategic Alliance or seeking to learn more about it. It's very well written, well organized and most importantly it identifies key issues and addresses them with excruciating details. I would strongly recommend it to business managers, people responsible for strategic development, and students.

Fully 60% of the world's money is offshore, and more than half of the world's financial transactions take place offshore. Old offshore money grows faster than onshore money because there is no tax "waste," and there is an ever expanding supply of new offshore money. Hence the exponential growth of offshore money.
Corporations and high net wealth individuals are concerned with increased profits, freedom from restrictive regulations, and asset protection. If there were no taxation, restriction, or problems onshore, there would be no funds deposited offshore and no activities carried on offshore.
International offshore financial centers (IOFCs) are in strong competition with one another to attract investors. It should never be forgotten that among the IOFCs there lurk a vast number of high tax countries-wolves in sheep's clothing.
Because tax practitioners and financiers who handle offshore transactions and operations normally make more money than those who stay domestic, their professional activities provide ever more grist to the offshore mill.

Encrypted Text.......2000-07-31
The book is very tedious to read and is extremely poorly arranged. The CD is useless. The author demonstrates a great knowledge of what he is writing, but has not presented it in an engaging and coherent form. The most important concepts are mixed and buried throughout the book and must be reconstructed by the reader. The reader does develop a feel for how complex international tax avoidance is and an understanding how excellent advice could cost hundreds of dollars an hour. The summary of it is, there are some legitimate opportunities for legitimate companies conducting legitimate businesses. However, most schemes while skirting the letter of the law violate the spirit of the law and are therefor, illegal. The temptation arises with foreign governments in search of hard currency, willing to hide activities from the IRS. However, international agreements are slowly removing these veils.
A complete guide.......2000-04-04
A very useful guide to the ones who want to either take advantage of the opportunities some countries offer and to know more about it. Beautifully and exhaustively written, with lots of examples, it is an essential guide. Even to the ones who, not living in the United States or in a common-law country, want to save money and optimize their businesses.
