Mastering Successful Work: Wakeup! .......2007-07-18

Skillful Means: Wake Up! Is a follow up to the author's book Skillful Means: Patterns for Success. In Skillful Means: Patterns for Success, the author examined the problem of work apathy and poor performance. He noted that most of us get very little actual work done each day. We may look busy but our minds are often distracted when we are actually working. At other times, we are busy making excuses, finding busy work, or procrastinating. In order to counter this common occurrence, the author challenged readers to look at work in a different way. Exercises included within the text help reader tackle difficult projects, use time more wisely, and to be mindful while working. The result was better quality work, completed faster, from employees who actually felt good about their jobs.

Skillful Means: Wake Up! follows through on the notions presented in Skillful Means: Patterns for Success. This book is somewhat more in depth taking on even more aspects and presenting over 80 more exercises for the reader to work through.

I found Skillful Means: Wake Up! a little header than Skillful Means: Patterns for Success. I found that as I read through the exercises in the latter, I could then practice them the next day at work. I could even practice several exercises at a time as they tended to compliment each other quite nicely, directing me towards mindfulness. I had to take the exercises in Skillful Means: Wake Up! a little slower. Sometimes, I had to practice a particular exercise or contemplate a concept for a while before I felt ready to move onto the next one. It was definitely worth the extra time and patience though as I learned a lot about myself.

Buddhist advice for people in the real world.......2005-08-18

"Mastering Successful Work" is one of the most practical, useful Buddhist books you will ever read. If you have ever wondered how to live as a Buddhist in the world (AND be successful in both your Buddhism and your job) then this is the book for you.
Tarthang Tulku is a buddhist teacher in the Nyingma lineage. Having said that, his real greatness is not in the exposition of complicated mystical Buddhist ideas but in his ability to relate Buddhist teachings to daily life. Tarthang Tulku writes for the person (Buddhist or not) who is trying to do good while also doing well. He gives practical advice towards achieving both goals.

He writes that the meditator may fool himself about his accomplishments, but the person who has a deadline or a payroll to meet cannot. So many Buddhist texts point us to the mountains and to the retreat, but Tarthang Tulku points us towards our own lives and sends us back here to find our place and seek our own way.
He does not, however, send us alone. He explains to us how we can make our work a meaningful part of our spiritual life, not an impediment to it. He explains these principles and ideas to us in 'layman's language,' not in technical Buddhist terminology. Then, he provides many examples and exercises to help us experience and understand these ideas and principles.
This book is not a difficult read. It is simply and directly written. If you seek esoteric wisdom, go somewhere else. If you are looking for practical advice on finding the balance between your Buddhist practice and your daily life, this is the book for you.

There are many other books by Tarthang Tulku (available on Amazon.com.) Another excellent book on this topic by this author is "Skillful Means." I recommend you read it first, as this book builds on some of the ideas presented in "Skillful Means," although it is not presented as a pre-requisite to "Mastering Successful Work." Another interesting book in this vein (also on Amazon.com) is "The Diamond Cutter : The Buddha on Managing Your Business and Your Life" by Geshe Michael Roach. Roach's book is more on the business end, while Tarthang Tulku writes more about WORK, but it is an interesting read.

I received Hollyhocks cook book as a gift while visiting my sister in Virginia. As I was cooking many of our family meals I was grateful for a new source of inspiration and immediately started trying out some of the recipes. While I made the Spicy Carrot Muffins and Chocolate Oatmeal Cookies with Orange, my Mom made the Babka with Cranberry-Almond Filling. All were a big success - the recipes were easy to follow, used wholesome ingredients and the results were delicious!
We went on to use this cookbook to make the rest of the meals during our family get together, and were not disappointed. Since our return home I continue to be inspired to try new recipes from the book - creating a long list of new family favourites. Highly recommended!

Essential Elements of Futures Trading.......2001-06-14

In Indian capital market, a historic change is going to take place on July 2, 2001. Indian capital market has a system of carrying forward the trades done on the stock market till the party completes the delivery of cash or certificates as the case may be or squares off the transaction with a buy or sell as appropriate. During the carry forward period, the margin may or may not be paid by the investor, but he has to pay carryforward charges from settlemet period to settlement period. This practice is being stopped from July 2, 2001 and India will have a derivative market in financial securities in which only the players can take positions by paying margins.

Hence, there is a lot of interest in the country to read books on futures and options trading. People are moving from library to library to read books on derivatives. It is in this context that I came across this book.

This book is edited one. Right at the beginning of the book, the editor focusses the readers on the three essential elements of future trading: discipline, well designed trading system, and adequate capitalization. A chapter on discipline by Jake Bernstein stresses the importance of continuous effort to track the market data and act upon it. Kenneth Upshaw's chapter on conserving capital is a very useful chapter. In a recent seminar, a number of experienced brokers commented that clients in general do not like stop loss actions. That means many traders in the markets are doing a basic mistake. The call of the editor to traders to review the basics of trading is very appropriate. Eighteen chapters are devoted to discuss various technical approaches that were used by master traders successfully.

The last chapter summarizes all the chapters in the book and provides the common threads of the master strategies.

This book is recommended for study by every aspiring futures trader. Only difficulty could be that you have to find it in a library.

I have seen many financial books that are either too generic in nature or have been written by people totally unqualfied to write on personal finance. J.W. Dicks is the exeption. He is uniquely qualified because he is a successful investor and has managed major accounts helping others as well.

Moonlight Investing shows practical, easy to use strategies that allow you wo start investing on a shoestring and turn your investing into a full time lucrative career. Highly recommended.

In this excellent book J.W. Dicks shows us how starting on a shoesting and part time you can build a portfolio that youhelp you reach financial security.

One of the better books on investing that I have read and one written by someone who has actually done it.

Trade and fiscal adjustment in africa.......2000-10-15

This book provided a comprehensive review of making a living in Africa. It talked about the futility of coconut farms as a succesful job and talked about where in Africayou could find the best decently paying job and relatively low-cost housing. I liked this book because it was not as dense as other books about trade and fiscal adjustment in Africa I had read. It also helped persuade me not to move to Africa, an option which I had been thinking about when I quit my last job.

Very informative and interesting.......2007-09-13

By focusing on just Jackson before he turned 21 and through a very nice sketch of life in the South (and later North) Carolina backcountry, Booraem provides a sympathetic and seemingly accurate account for the origins of most of Andrew Jackson's personal quirks.

Booraem is hesitant to psychoanalyxe, and while I disagreed with a few of his personal asessments, he spends most of his time providing facts not interpretation. The endnotes of this book are almost as fascinating as the narrative and between the two they provide much clarification of this rather shadowy period of Jackson's life.

Several not so positive points: Booraem provides n real explanation at all for Jackson's anti Indian sentiments (and later behaviour) but that seems to be largely guided by the need to stick as closely as possible to sources about Jackson. Deeper psychology is clearly not one of Booraem interests and so this is often a point that makes the book suffer narratively, but on the other hand it is probably what distinguishes this book from what came before it. The second weakness is related to the first, and that is the division between the perod to the death of Jackson's mother and his early legal career. A little more detail on the political situation in the Carolina backcountry would have been extremely useful. After reading this I began to look for a history of post revolutionary war North and South Carolina, but probably will never get around to it as I am not a Carolinian nor a professional historian. Whether this last complaint speaks badly of myself or Booraem, I'll leave the reader to judge.

On the whole I give this a very strong recommendation.

Character and personality are shaped, it is generally believed, almost entirely in the early years. When the poet William Wordsworth says, "the child is father of the man" he echoes an earlier poet, John Milton, who said, "childhood shows the man, as morning shows the day."

In this excellent biography by Hendrik Booraem we learn of the time, the events and the people that bent the twig that would grow into Old Hickory, the seventh president of the United States -- Andrew Jackson.

Old Hickory is but one of the many nicknames that adhered to President Jackson. It is a wonderfully appropriate name. The quality of hickory is strength and endurance; it is the perfect handle for any striking tool that delivers great force and will not break on impact. He was also called the Hero of New Orleans, Duel Fighter and Sharp Knife. It will probably never be known just how many duels Jackson fought, or even how many men he killed in the process. As president, Jackson was feared for his rages. They seemed uncontrollable, yet it is believed he used his anger as a precision tool to intimidate and control others.

"Young Hickory" provides a fascinating account of Jackson's life up to age 21. Biographer, Hendrik Booraem is a noted historian; this is his third book focused on the adolescent years of an American President. I have not read his first, "The Road to Respectability" (1988) about President James A. Garfield. But, I have read and reread "The Provincial" (1994) Booraem's penetrating take on Calvin Coolidge. That careful and insightful book goes further to explain the character of the 30th president than does any other single book published in the last 50 years. In the case of Coolidge -- Booraem's research is exhaustive and painstaking. Often, he discovered neglected primary sources or assigned a new spin to an old story. I can only assume that the same quality is present in his book on Jackson. Where the record is not clear, and that is often the case, he provides you with the divergent accounts and his reasons for the one he chooses and the basis for his informed speculation.

The style of this book is literate and graceful; the words conduct you to the world of young Andy Jackson and make you glad you took the journey. Young Hickory was born on March 15, 1767. He grew up in South Carolina and considered himself a native of that state. There is some basis for the stoutly held contention that he was in fact born in North Carolina. As a boy, Jackson endured hardship and suffering. It is a wonder that he survived his youth. But, let's have Rik Booraem speak from his preface:

"The story of his early life, which unfolded during the American Revolution in the Carolinas, is highly dramatic. He nearly died of small pox after being wounded and imprisoned at the age of fourteen. The war destroyed his home and his immediate family. He constructed an entirely new identity to replace the one he had lost. After becoming a successful lawyer, he turned his attention toward the land west of the mountains."

An Exciting Story.......2001-07-16

Young Hickory carries you along like a boat in a spring flood. The story of the British campaign in the Carolinas is as well-told as I have ever read. Booraem is a fine story-teller and paints an unforgettable picture of those exciting times. -

I have read 4-in-1 books before and have enjoyed them. This book however was poorly written. The story plots were interesting yet each story was too short. There was no substance in the stories. The characters meet once or twice and find themselves in love right away and soon marry. This book should have been split into one or two books with a more in-depth history into the characters. If interested in 4-in-1 books I recommend "Castles" by Tracie Peterson or "Bride for a Bit."
