4 out of 5 stars Excellent intro to accounting/finance for the novice........1999-08-30

As a new manager of a small/medium-sized nonprofit organization (20 staff), I needed to get up to speed quickly on accounting and finance principles, but didn't have time to take a course. This book was a great help. It's written in a conversation style, not in dry "accountant-speak," and gives the reader a good overview, with examples of all major accounting and finance concepts you are likely to run across. It even had a floppy disk with a variety of simple spreadsheets for you to learn from as you walked through each chapter. My only complaint was the spreadsheets on the disk are in an early form of Lotus 1-2-3, so those of us with Microsoft Excel have a hard time printing out these older documents cleanly (some of the formatting doesn't translate well).

      Book Description

From a difficult and often daunting childhood to the head of a multimillion-dollar business, Deborah Rosado Shaw is living proof that no matter how humble your beginnings or difficult your circumstances, you can defy the odds and build the life you deserve. In order to do so, you must Dream BIG!, and Deborah's book shows you how. Born to an impoverished Puerto Rican family, living in the poorest congressional district in the country -- New York's South Bronx -- Deborah never allowed the hand she was dealt to dictate the outcome of the game. Instead, she rolled up her sleeves, got to work, and became CEO of her own enterprise.

A gripping testimonial to the stamina of the human spirit, Dream BIG! tells you how to:

    • stop fighting fear
    • get focused
    • claim your power
    • create something from nothing
    • play beyond the rules and win

      and why:

    • quitting is necessary
    • desperation is deadly
    • fighting is essential
    • gossip is good
    • suffering is optional

Deborah Rosado Shaw has been the recipient of the "Women of Enterprise Award" in 1996, the "Free Enterprise Legend Award" in 1997, was voted one of the "50 Most Influential Latinas" in 1998, and is a proud mother of three. Her success did not occur without a struggle. Using her own personal stories as well as intimate anecdotes from other women whose energy and courage are contagious, Deborah paints an invigorating and illuminating portrait of how to make life happen for you, instead of just letting it happen to you.

      5 out of 5 stars Review.......2007-06-19

I just wanted to leave a bit of review here for my mom (the author). Hopefully she'll see this someday and know that despite what she has viewed as shortcomings, she has always been an inspiration not only to others but to her family and all those closest to her. I've had my own difficulties and was raised amidst many of hers. With a great deal owed to her example and support, I was able to carve a path from high school drop-out to acceptance at a prestigious university for the fall. You have been and continue to be an amazing mom and I love you!

If you haven't yet read this book, you are missing out on an experience everyone deserves to have. If you guys loved her debut work as much as I did, please keep an eye out for her upcoming titles. They're on the way!

      -Andrew

5 out of 5 stars Straightforward advice from the heart .......2007-01-05

The author tells her story about how she succeeded in her dreams and kept pushing herself further. She definitely makes the point that she was not a super woman along the way; she made plenty of mistakes. The author always seemed to have a clear sense about who she was and what she wanted. Her personal stories added a great deal about her advice. Her stories happened to her and she was simply not repeating stories of friends or patients. From who she was, to who became is an inspiring story. How the basics like writing letters helped her network. How she wanted to blast salsa music in her suburban neighborhood. Through the toughest times, the author maintained a strong sense of self.

4 out of 5 stars One page--even one idea--can be worth the cover price.......2004-10-07

I've just begun reading this, after picking it up and seeing answers to some of my own dilemmas in its pages. She says things with finality, and I don't always agree with her. For example, I like to think that, someday, I WILL drive a Jaguar. But, that said, when she talks about letting go of things that haven't worked in the past, and moving forward to a better future filled with achievable goals... this is a very good book for people who are depressed or otherwise feeling "stuck" in life. If you don't actually buy a copy yourself, ask your library to order it.

      5 out of 5 stars Inspiring!!!.......2003-08-30

I am not an avid reader. I tend to read more newpapers, professional journals. When I started reading this book I couldn't put it down. I finished this book in one night. A record for me.

This book is uplifting, inspiring and true!!! I felt motivation I haven't felt in a long time since I read this book.

      5 out of 5 stars Dream Big.......2002-02-26

This is a very inspiring book. When I initially started reading, it felt like just another feel good book with general advice. However as I progressed it picked up and became quite interesting. The advice given by the author is not new or unique, but offered in the context of her own life experiences, become very useful.
One shortcoming of this book, as for many books of this nature, is that it seems to address primarily a younger audience. What about the readers who are now in their mid-forties, early fifties and have less time to start over and be effective? Understandably the author is in her thirties, hence this shortcoming. Nevertheless, I wish I had a book like this available to me when I was in my twenties, because the ideas offered are inspiring and most valuable.

What a novel idea: if you want to know how to successfully lose weight, study the real experts--the people who have done it! Registered dietician Anne Fletcher did just that. She surveyed 160 "masters" who succeeded in losing at least 20 pounds and keeping the weight off for at least 3 years. This was the minimum; most lost far more weight--an average of 63 pounds--and more than one-third have kept the weight off for a decade or more.

How did they do it? Thin for Life presents their success stories, strategies, motivation, inspiration, and tricks. Most had tried "many times and many ways" to lose weight before discovering what worked for them and how to prevent and recover from relapses. Some techniques worked for many--such as keeping a food diary and increasing exercise. Others were highly individual and will spur you to do your own creative thinking. Fletcher compiles the "10 keys to success" that emerged most often, lets the masters speak for themselves throughout the book, and fills in additional, valuable information and resources. Whether you have 10 pounds to lose or 100, this book will help you do it--safely, effectively, and permanently. Highly recommended. --Joan Price

          Book Description

In this new edition of the acclaimed bestseller, award-winning nutritionist Anne M. Fletcher incorporates exciting recent scientific research to show that permanent weight loss is far easier than is commonly believed. Whether you want to lose 10 pounds or 100, Thin for Life will help you master your weight problem by sharing the techniques of the real experts -- hundreds of women and men who have lost weight for good.

          Customer Reviews:

          4 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......2006-03-27

I like this book. I don't love it. It has interesting mini-stories about people who lost weight and kept it off, just like the title states, but doesn't go into great detail.

5 out of 5 stars A true weight loss tool .......2006-03-09

This book was suggested by my dietitian. I have been impressed with the level of research and authority contained in the book. It is reassuring to see the process that I am going through is the same thing experienced by others and that they were, and remain, successful in their weight loss. I highly recommend this book and consider it a "must have" for anyone who is serious and committed to changing their lives through weight loss.

4 out of 5 stars The good, the bad, and the ugly.......2006-01-03

The good: The advice here from successful weight-losers is wide-ranging, generally useful, and presented in context so that you know something about the person's weight history and particular circumstances. Not all of it is going to be useful for any particular person, of course, but the perspective of successful people is, as another reviewer remarked, like gold.

The bad: About half the book (scattered throughout plus a section at the back) consists of the author's own weight-loss advice and diet program. This is very much oriented toward fat-as-dietary-demon. If you're using a high-protein/low carbohydrate approach, this part obviously won't be applicable for you; if you're following a conventional low-fat/limited-protein/high-carbohydrate diet, you'll find it more useful. HOWEVER...

The ugly: Be careful about the particulars of the diet advice here. The book advises use of margarine instead of butter in the meal plans, which was conventional thinking in 1994 (when the first edition was published) but is inexcusable in a book published in 2003. The author recommends using sweet snacks such as jelly beans, licorice, marshmallows, etc., and says "Sugar and low-fat sweets per se don't concern me too much as a dietician" so long as they don't contain fat. Sugar candy may have zero fat but that doesn't make it a good thing to encourage people to snack on. A dietician writing in 2003 should know better.

Summary: by all means read the book, but get it for the stories of the "masters", not the diet advice. Just about all of the "masters" had at least one thing to say that I found useful and insightful.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite book on weight loss...........2005-10-27

I first read this book a number of years ago, when I was in the midst of losing weight. I've been able to keep the weight off (50 pounds), and this book is one of the reasons for my continued success. The wonderful thing about this book is its focus - it's about people who have lost weight and kept it off. It affirms that long-term weight loss is possible; in fact, a goodly number of people have been successful at it! Some have followed a formal plan (Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, etc.) but an equal number have used an informal one of their own devising. There are some common threads in their experiences, and this book details those. What a wonderful, common sense book - I reread it often for inspiration!

4 out of 5 stars basic good advice.......2005-08-03

the best thing about this book is learning once and for all that everyone needs to find their own way to lose weight and keep it off. it's refreshing to read real accounts of real masters of weight loss and it boils down to basic common sense...eat less and move more! what you eat and how you move is up to you and that's the fun part of the book...learning that all the masters found their own way to lose weight and keep it off. empowering and easy to read.

              1 out of 5 stars I was totally duped..........2006-11-17

...about 5 years ago in IBD there was an ad for this
book in which the book seller said this book was full
top secret info never before available and only available
for the next 2 or 3 days, then the offer is gone forever.

I panic bought. I feel like a total fool.

              This book is worthless.

              1 out of 5 stars A mess.......2003-09-21

One can seldom find such one sided, overwhelming negative comment on Amazon of a trading book. All reviewers before me rated this book with less than 3 stars. This book really belongs to the rare breed.

Though he author used a lot of charts, supported with Stochastics (he used that badly, too), to elaborate how to use Gann's ideas to trade for profit, he failed miserably. His charts and his analysis were simply beyond apprehension, even for a pro like me. You couldnt understand what "pattern" (that's what charts are for) the author was talking about. He should have employed some professionals to edit his original script. The addition of copy and paste ideas from the original Gann books just couldnt help at all. Dont waste your hard earned money on this mess.

p.s. I am sorry that the only points the author made it clear were:

1)The basic ratio of Gann Angles is 1:1 - one unit of price equalling one unit of time. A 2x1 Gann Angle indicates that prices are moving two units of price in one unit of time. (Perhaps the only clear thing on this book)

2)After an initial, sustained price move, either up or down, prices retrace ot 50% of their initial move. If the retracement exceeds 50%, prices should continue to the 62.5% (5/8) level, before a reaction occurs. (Gann used 1/8 as the base unit of his forecast) (Perhaps the only simplifed and clear thing on this book)

              3 out of 5 stars I couldn't figure it out.......2003-07-12

Maybe I am incapable of understand Gann's square of 9 and angles because I was not really able to decipher most of this book. I will admit, the book does attempt to simply Gann's methods.. but it is far from clear. This does not totally discredit the book and it's potential methods, but I was not able to understand it to where it might improve my bottom line.

2 out of 5 stars Anything but Simplified and Clear..........2003-01-15

Gann's trading methods have always been a mystery to those of us who don't understand his strategies. However, this book makes an attempt to resolve the mystery behind Gann's trading system and it's almost more "simplified" if you read a book that Gann had written himself. This book does nothing to shed light on how Gann worked his magic. You're better off reading something by William Gann himself and trying to decipher his methods on your own.

2 out of 5 stars Dull but tries hard.......2001-09-11

This book achieves what it aims to do. It gives an overview of some of Gann's ideas and explains his 50% retracement rule in almost painful detail.

I understand the frustration of the previous two reviewers. The book is poorly edited and full of typographical errors. Because it contains a lot of detailed workings, there is a tendency for the eye to skip over that detail. I can imagine that is exactly what the editor's eye did. Hence the typos.

This book is not worthless though. It contains some sound advice about the importance of employing systematic analysis and the disciplined use of stops. It also provides a simple but reasonably effective trading technique. On the other hand, it is dull and too long. The general technique is also covered more succinctly and interestingly in other trading books.

It is not worth the "new" price but a cheap secondhand copy or, even better, a loaner might be worth the effort

Investing for Canadians for Dummies was the first investment book I ever read. I've read a lot of other investment books since but none of them really give you the overall picture of investing presented in such an easy to read format. I borrowed the copy I first read and even though I'm now a more experienced and knowledgeable investor, I still want this book to have as a reference and guide. Highly recomended.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on investing.......2004-11-23

Yes the book does not "get to the point" but that is because investing is a complicated business if you want to chase high returns. It can be simple if your willing to live with low to average returns. But I doubt that is what people buying this book are after. Bell does a really good job of laying out the options that are availiable in different market and personal condidtions. Overall he does a really good job of being evenhanded with different companies and financial instruments but his bias towards Index fund is pretty obvious (he even states it). This is a good thing however, as for 95% of long terms investors Index funds are probably the way to go. I also really liked how he stressed the importance of having an international portfolio. That is by far the most important thing I learned from this book. But then I have years of investing experience already.

4 out of 5 stars Good book for beginners.......2004-03-21

This was my first book on investing. Great for beginners. Too much small talk and analogies. Author needs to get more to the point.

This book is simply great. After trudging through a myriad of online 'help' sites, I came to the conclusion that I needed to start at the beginning. That's where this book shines. If you really have no idea what stock investing is all about, this book explains the how and why from step one. The author goes further than simple stock trading basics to cover the bigger picture. He covers all aspects of financial planning in a very big way. I highly recommend this to the person who is wondering what all those tickers mean at the bottom of the news screen.

This gives an extraordinary review of the current and historical arguments for and against differential capital gains treatment. This book is not intented to help individual investors, but to inform readers on the policy debate. Extremely informative and well written. Should be required reading for anyone interested in taxes or public finance.

3 out of 5 stars Who is the audience for this book?.......2001-02-02

I bought this book (and returned it). Keep in mind, I didn't read it, I just skimmed it over. But I figured others might want to know that there wasn't much in the way of information on how an individual investor should attack his/her taxes. It was a book more focused on the "big picture" of how capital gains taxes effect our economy.

Perhaps this book is more suited for an economics student.

As a middle school instructor of U.S.history I found Mr. Padowicz's taped presentation: Seeing the Franklin D. Roosevelt Home & Museum to be a valuable teaching tool. His "tell it like it was" approach was refreshing and my students seemed to appreciate his honest and open approach to the many complex facets of the Roosevelt's lives and accomplishments.

In or out of the classroom I highly recommend Mr. Padowicz's book on tape having found it to be both entertaining and informative.

5 out of 5 stars A genuine "theatre of the mind" quality audiobook production.......2000-06-05

This six hour, five cassette audiobook presentation of Julian Padowicz's experiences and observational commentary showcases the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt museum and home. Julian describes their lives, the history that surrounded them, and the history they made. Listeners will learn about such contemporary notables as Sara Roosevelt, George VI and Elizabeth of Britain, Winston Churchill, Theodore Roosevelt, Louis Howe, Lucy Mercer, Al Smith, Harry Hopkins, and many, many others.
